THE ROW HARTLEY WINTNEY FC VS BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC 4TH DECEMBER 2018 KICK-OFF 7.30PM Hampshire FA Senior Cup THIRD ROUND sponsored by Regal Building Services LTD

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP 3rd ROUND Sponsored by Regal Building Services Limited 4 th December 2018 vs Basingstoke Town Kick Off: 7.30pm Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this Hampshire Senior Cup Third Round Tie. Our opponents this evening are our near neighbours Basingstoke Town. To all their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope that you enjoy your short stay with us tonight. The game will be played to a conclusion tonight. In the event that the match is tied at the end of 90 minutes, there will be no extra time and the tie will be resolved by penalty kicks. Our visitors today are well known to us, boasting a number of ex Hartley players amongst their ranks, pretty much the same way that we have a number of ex Town players in our ranks. match but one in which league points are not at stake. Basingstoke have the added incentive of their new management team featuring in their first competitive fixture tonight. The much respected Martin Kuhl takes charge of team affairs and will be ably assisted by Dan Brownlie. We wish them well... but not when they play us. Although I was not in attendance (again; new chairman anyone?) it seems the Jekyll & Hyde Hartley returned on Saturday. A poor result, following the victory in mid-week, was disappointing, and as they say, back to the drawing board. Hopefully we will soon have a settled line up and string together some results that will secure our Premier division status. Football admin and organisation-wise, we still need volunteers to help out the already beleaguered band of helpers, who I can assure you are stretched to almost breaking point! If you can help in any way then please step forward. Our survival rests on us all battling through as a team. Please be part of the Row! Keep your eyes peeled for the posters and news of the forthcoming events at the Club. On the 16th we have the Children's Christmas Party and the Christmas Raffle. Tickets are on sale at the bar. Why not take a few books and sell them to your work mates? It all helps the Club and your support is vital. Enjoy the game. The outcome of tonight's game is a difficult one to call. Obviously the bragging rights will feature heavily, but both teams will be, I suggest, looking at players and patterns in a competitive Luke #UTR 6

VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Evening all, and a warm welcome to our visitors, Basingstoke Town. We ll learn the lessons from it and strive to improve, starting tonight. We were jubilant after beating our nearest neighbours in the league last Tuesday night. This result came on the back of another good performance away at Tiverton the previous weekend, where we shared the spoils 1-1. This put a spring in our step and made our thoughts less morose after the dismal display vs Met Police last home midweek outing. Form and a string of consistent performances were something we as a team had been missing over the previous six weeks or so. This led us to really look deep into the mechanics and setup of our team. No one individual, or one certain area on the pitch, was to solely blame for this dip in form and results. A closer inspection into the methods that the players collectively use to obtain the style and characteristic of how we want them to play, was paramount to the hopeful turn around in performances and form. Obviously the performance at the weekend wasn t what we were expecting but let s be clear, Chesham are on their way up and not the cannon fodder they might have been 6 weeks ago. A big physical side will take points during this winter period and we need to have the guile to be able to find a solution. We moved the ball slowly, made bad passing decisions and our pass execution was subpar completely contrasting our previous two games. A number of the lads, who had impressive games prior, were way below their levels and we got what we deserved. We huffed and puffed but struggled to create a real chance of note after a very positive start. 8 The playing squad has been stretched to its capacity of late and we had to recall loan players to cover injuries and knocks obtained in recent games and training. Notably Jayden Englefield from Farnham Town, who played the full 90 vs Tiverton and did really well. Thank you also to Kye Nash (also Farnham Town) and George Frise (Knaphill) who added to our travelling squad at Tiverton. We would also like to thank Farnham Town and Knaphill for assisting and being understanding. The knocks and niggles obtained were all minor with exception of the injury on Matty Evans, who will sadly miss the next few months with his. We welcome to the club Marley Ridge from Havant and Waterlooville. Marley played in the derby game on Tuesday and thoroughly impressed. We also welcome Dan Stewart, a former Millwall and Charlton Athletic academy player most recently with Guildford City. Let s hope for a positive performance from the lads tonight. Thank you for your continued support of us and the lads. Millers and Turks

THE ROW : PLAYERS OF THE FUTURE HARTLEY S FUTURE STARS Some to watch out for in the future: Kye Nash Kye is our U18 Youth Team captain and made his First Team debut on 13th Nov this season, coming on as a substitute in the League Cup win at Met Police (below). We strongly believe he will play in the first team for this football club. An unbelievably technical player, we are loaning him out to Farnham Town s 1st team where we hope he can nail down a start and kick on. Georgio Di Lullo A fantastic young winger who just turned 18. He s our oldest youth team player and currently on loan to Ash United s 1st team where he is a regular starter. Dawid Gorski You ll recognise him from the first team bench, where the young goalkeeper is understudy to Adam Desbois. Dawid also trains with Reading once a week and has already had a loan spell at Bedfont & Feltham and has featured from time to time in our reserves. Lewis Goodfellow A centre-back who is strong and good with the ball, and improving all the time. Lewis is not a local boy and comes from Luke Tuffs Academy, but makes the regular trips over from Staines with no problem. Lewis is currently being eyed for a possible loan spell with Abbey Rangers. CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT - LIAM EAGLE It is with a heavy heart and much gra tude for his efforts over the past few seasons that the Club announces the departure from our ranks of centre-back Liam Eagle. Liam has been one of Hartley's true heroes in recent seasons, having been with us since our days in the Combined Coun es League. He assisted the Club in achieving back-toback CCL Premier tles in and , and then a second successive promo- on in from the Evo-S k League South, East Division to the Southern Premier. Hartley Wintney co-manager, Anthony Millerick, says: "Liam has been a massive part of our success in recent years and we'd like to thank him for all his efforts. There have been many highlights but my personal favourite was the performance (along with Jack Ball) in our playoff victory, one of the best displays I've witnessed from a centre back pairing!" "We are sure the Eagle with soar at his next club and we wish him the very best! " Liam will remain in the hearts of the Row supporters as having been one of the Hartley greats, a very popular player who never gave anything less than 100%. We wish Liam all the very best, both in his family and football life. 10

HWFC U18 YOUTH TEAM UPDATE It s been a while since we posted about the Youth, so here s an update. It s not a secret that I m looking for someone to come in and help me with the youth and potentially look to take over from me in the future. This isn t because I don t enjoy it, I love doing what I do, but I simply don t have the time I used to have, and with more travelling with the first team and my Academy growing to 50+ boys, alongside a growing involvement with the Juniors, I realised I wasn t giving the boys the attention they deserve. In saying that, the person or people coming in have to be the right ones. With the club going in the direction it is, it s so important we have a strong youth setup that can bring players through into the first team set up. Our first struggle at Youth level does come from recruiting them. The Ryman Youth has historically been seen as a stronger level of football than the Allied Counties, so with that players gravitate to this League. We can t enter the Ryman Youth without an Allied side and, due to floodlight restrictions, that won t change anytime soon. This season the Allied Counties dismantled its Premier, with many of its top teams now in our league, so arguably our league is now as strong as the Ryman, so this trend may be hopefully about to change! Which leads us onto our next subject of results. We have struggled this season - a mixture of the highest level of football the club has ever played Youth at, combined with us having a very young side, has seen us struggle at the bottom end of the table. Let me be clear - I would rather we were losing and learning against teams like Maidenhead Utd rather than winning more local and lower standard leagues. It s all about 13 development - and how these boys are developing is a marvel! We only have 4 boys in our squad that are top end age. For the most part we have 15 year olds, some only 14 in June or July, playing against 18 year olds pretty much week in week out. It is in many ways men v boys, but the lads never give up, fight to the end, improve every week and, most importantly, they now smile through it all. The other day we played Flackwell Heath, who are in fact FAB Academy, the best non Football League Academy in the country, and in the 2nd round proper of the FA Youth Cup. Although we got a bruising, we only lost the second half 2-1 and the boys were buzzing. We sat in the dressing room at the end, knowing we had more chances than that and we had competed with a very good side. We looked around. 15 years old If we can do this now, what can we do in a year or two s time? What is for sure, regardless if it s me or somebody else, whoever is lucky enough to have these boys has a fantastic opportunity to bring them through in years to come and have success at Youth level. For those of you that are aware, we are working very hard with the Juniors setup to bring the clubs closer together. Pete and Duncan do a fantastic job with this, and at our end. myself and Millers are now coaching many of the juniors teams and you will often see us out there on a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon with the boys we coach through the weeks. We are hoping this will help bridge the gap between the juniors and the midweek youth side to help us be more competitive in the years to come. Luke Tuffs

THE PAPERS SAID: TIVERTON TOWN Tiverton Town v Hartley Wintney Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Saturday 24th Nov 2018 Report by Kevin O'Byrne Hartley Wintney made the 260 mile round trip across to mid Devon for the second time this season, having suffered a heavy defeat at Tiverton in the FA Trophy replay a few weeks earlier. The Row arrived on the back of a dip in form which had seen them pick up just three points from their last seven league games, with a particularly disappointing defeat coming last Tuesday at home to Met Police. The Hartley squad had an unfamiliar line-up; no new names but several absentees from the team defeated on Tuesday night. There was a start for exciting young winger, Jayden Englefield, with promising youngsters George Frise and Kye Nash on the bench. Striker Michael Campbell is still recovering from injury but was on the bench, and there was a welcome return to the squad for centre-back Steve Noakes. The first action, 3 minutes into the game, saw the Row's Tyron Smith deliver a free kick into the Tivvy box which was eventually cleared by rightback, Josh Key. At the other end, Row fullback Jacques Kpohomouh made a hash of his attempted clearance and the Row were fortunate that Tivvy centre-forward, Tom Bath, was unable to capitalise on the mistake. Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois, pulled off a superb save on 12 minutes when Cameron Allen picked out Tiverton's prolific goalscorer, Levi Landricombe, whose volley was tipped over the bar. The same two players combined five minutes later when Allen released Landricombe. He took it on himself but fired wide from the edge of the area. The visitors had to sustain some pressure but exerted some of their own. Nic Ciardini's cross was palmed away by Tivvy 'keeper, Liam Armstrong, and Englefield, following up, was unable to find the target. A good spell of Hartley pressure was eventually relieved, and when the home side won a corner on the half hour, it led to the opening Jack Ball scoring the equaliser at Tiverton Pic: Viv Curtis 14

THE PAPERS SAID: TIVERTON TOWN goal. A Levi Landricombe free kick was headed away for a corner. Landricombe took the corner and Jamie Price's flicked header put Tiverton ahead on 31 minutes. [1-0] Hartley responded well, Jayden Englefield going on a terrific run and exchanging quick one-two passes with Romario Hart before unleashing a shot that flew narrowly wide. Just before the half-time whistle, Tivvy's Ben Mammola was booked for a foul on Hart, and captain Jamie Price was also cautioned for something he said. HT: Tiverton Town 1-0 Hartley Row 'keeper Desbois was the first called into action, three minutes into the second half. He rose well to palm away an Allen cross, but it fell into a dangerous area and the visitors were relieved to see Levi Landricombe fire wide. Hartley then had a good spell, winning three corners in succession, and although unable to make them count, their tenaciousness paid off on 63 minutes when, from another Ty Smith corner, Jack Ball stole in at the back post and chested the ball in from close range. [1-1] Hartley were now exerting good pressure and, minutes after the equaliser, Tivvy 'keeper Armstrong raced out to gather a risky back header and clattered into Romario Hart. Fortunately for the home side, the offence occurred on the edge of the area and the free kick came to nothing. The game was getting more stretched, with both sides pushing for the winner. Tivvy's Michael Landricombe, brother of Levi, played a great through ball, but Tom Bath failed to read the pass and Desbois was able to gather easily. Then 15 on 79 minutes, Levi Landricombe's header towards goal was wayward but fell to Tivvy left back, Callum Hall, and he blazed over. Play was end to end going into the final minutes, with the Row looking the more likely to find a winner. Another Ty Smith corner caused Tiverton's defence problems, but Jack Ball flicked his header just over the bar. Ben Mammola did very well to deal with a Louie Paget delivery, then play switched to the other end and Tom Bath played Levi Landricombe in on goal, but the usually dependable striker fired over with only Desbois to beat. As the game moved past the 90 minutes, there was still one last chance for Hartley to find the winner, but a free kick was curled wide. The final whistle saw the Row travel back with a much deserved point from a gritty, encouraging and spirited performance that will have helped them shrug off their recent dip in form. FT: Tiverton Town 1-1 Hartley Attendance: 211 Tiverton Town: Liam Armstrong, Josh Key, Callum Hall, Jamie Price (c), Ben Mammola, Tom Gardner, Scott Rogers, Michael Landricombe, Tom Bath, Levi Landricombe, Cameron Allen Subs: Jordan Rogers, Harrison Davis, Max Smallcombe, Josh Wadham, George Rogers Hartley Wintney: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Tyron Smith, Jack French, Josh Webb, Romario Hart, Nic Ciardini (c), Jayden Englefield Subs: George Frise, Kye Nash, Michael Campbell, Steve Noakes

THE PAPERS SAID: CHESHAM UNITED Hartley Wintney v Chesham Utd, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Saturday 1st December '18 Report by David Graham Chesham United continued their recent good form with a win over mid table Hartley Wintney. With heavy rain in the morning, the Row ground staff worked hard to get the fixture on. The Row had the first opportunity from a free kick awarded 25 yards out. Josh Webb's effort went just over the crossbar. Hartley took the lead on five minutes, Dan Stewart and Romario Hart forced their way through the Generals defence and the latter's parting shot was parried by Chesham 'keeper, Ben Goode, only to see the rebound hit Marley Ridge on the chest and rebound into the net. (1-0) Chesham responded well and gradually gained an edge, helped by the strong running of front pair, Jefferson Louis and Eoin Casey. After 9 minutes, a cross from the left by Dave Pearce found Eoin Casey, who fed Jefferson Louis and his shot was held by Adam Desbois. Two minutes later, a dangerous cross from the left by Pearce had Desbois scrambling and the young 'keeper did well to push away to safety. On 24 minutes, a long free kick found Casey in a good position within the Row penalty box. However, the Row defenders reacted quickly and smothered the danger out. On 35 minutes, some loose play by the Row in midfield enabled Ryan Blake to get in behind the defence, but the parting shot went into the side netting. 16 Two minutes later and the visitors pulled level. A corner was partly cleared and a return ball into the area found Steve Brown, who squared to Casey and he shot home from close range. (1-1) The Generals continued in the ascendancy and on the stroke of half time took the lead. A short spell of pressure saw two efforts from Casey blocked, before Dave Pearce managed to scramble the ball home. (1-2) HT: HARTLEY 1 CHESHAM UTD 2 Hartley had an early chance to pull level when Josh Webb got free on the right side after a one-two with Romario Hart. The midfielder was unlucky to see his parting shot go just wide across the face of the goal. On 51 minutes, a corner from Dave Pearce found the head of Casey, and Adam Desbois in the Row goal pulled off a good save. Four minutes later, the young Row 'keeper produced an excellent point blank stop from Pearce. The Row's chances of a comeback received a setback when a rash double footed challenge by Romario Hart earned a straight red card. Despite the man disadvantage, the Row pressed for the equaliser but were unable to make too much impression on a resolute Generals defence. On 78 minutes, a good run down the right by Jacques Kpohomouh saw his cross find Jack Ball who shot over. Chesham held on to claim the points which they just about deserved. "We started well and carried on where we left off on Tuesday. The ground staff did well to get the game on. However, it's evident that the conditions during the winter period of heavy pitches is going to favour the teams with a physicality presence. We allowed Chesham to impose their game on us for spells in the match, and we became tentative. When we went down to 10 men, we moved the ball around quicker and started to get a foothold in the match. "We will get back to the drawing board and analyse what went wrong, ready for our next fixture." 17

THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Jon Couch ANOTHER new record was equalled in the National League this week. Chesterfield's 1-1 draw with Bromley on Tuesday night was their NINTH successive stalemate, breaking a club record and matching the longest ever sequence in the top five divisions in English football, joining the feat of Woking in the Conference season. It's a run that sees Martin Allen's men ensconced in the relegation zone in their first ever season of Non-League football, although bizarrely they are currently on the best and worst run of form in club history. The Spireites are 19 league games without a win breaking a new club record for the longest winless run but Zavon Hines' injury-time penalty which helped secure a share of the spoils against Bromley at the Proact Stadium also means the club are unbeaten in 12 games their best run of form for 12 years. Such a strange sequence will naturally draw both positive and negative reactions but does express how fine lines can determine the short-term future of both club and individual. If the Spireites could have turned just four of those nine draws into wins they would have turned their 20-point haul from 22 matches into a top-ten place and play-off contention. And look at the manager himself. Allen is under intense pressure at the Proact for their underwhelming start to the season, although it's interesting that no-one in the know is writing off the Spireites just yet. You need only look back to see Tranmere Rovers turn a struggling start into promotion back to the elite 92, and with the top seven competing for promotion places these days, anything can happen. And let's face it, who would want to face Chesterfield in a knockout encounter at the Proact in front of 8,000 roaring home supporters? Allen remains a man of mystery in football. He does things slightly differently to the rest, hence his 'Mad Dog' nickname, but few could argue his methods are effective. He's already taken Barnet to the Conference title, in , having won the League Two title with Gillingham a year earlier. Chesterfield's season will reach the halfway stage when they entertain title favourites Salford City at the Proact on December 8. Who would bet against them stunning the Ammies and launching a second-half surge up the table? Fine lines remember. The NLP has increased its coverage from its regular 48 pages to 56 pages, still for the same price of Increasing the number of pages comes at a cost both in terms of printing, distribution and reporting/writing. The NLP is the paper of the non-league game and as a club we urge everybody to support the publication s efforts by purchasing the paper, or why not take out a subscription and have it delivered to your door each 23

BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY There is little doubt that football was being played in the Basingstoke area in the early 1890's, but it wasn't until 1896 that a Basingstoke Town F.C. club was formed from Aldworth United and Basingstoke Albion. In 1901 the club entered the Hampshire League and in 1909 the local North Hants Ironworks team merged with the Town club. This merger produced dividends, with title success in 1911/12 and 1919/20. After playing at a couple of grounds in the area, the club moved to its present site in Initially the club had a 15- year lease given by 1st Viscount Camrose, but on his death in 1953 his son, 2nd Viscount Camrose increased the lease to The sixties were the beginning of a more successful period for the Camrose club, finishing as runners up in 1965/66 and the following season. It was third time lucky in 1967/68 when the Hampshire League title was won. After being runners up again in 1968/69, they won back to back titles in 1969/70 and 1970/71. The latter came without a league defeat and the Hampshire Senior Cup was won for the first time. The club joined the Southern League in 1971/72 and finished 8th in its first season. The highlight was reaching the F.A. Cup 1st Round for the first time ever. A then record attendance of 3,400 saw Northampton Town win 5-1 at the Camrose. In 1984/85 the club won the Southern League Southern Division, without losing a home game. After a couple of years in the Premier Division, the club had the chance to move across to the 28 Isthmian League. It was a disastrous first season as the club were relegated. But the following year promotion was achieved with a last day victory at Southwick and, for the first time, the club reached the Trophy 1st round, losing at Kettering Town after a replay. The following year saw more cup success as the club reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup for the first time. A crowd of over 4,000 saw Torquay United win 3-2. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won with a record breaking 8-0 thrashing of Lymington. The next few seasons were a struggle, and in 1993/94 the club suffered relegation. After two years in Division One, the club had only another Senior Cup success to show for its efforts. But in 1996/97, promotion was achieved as runners up, and another appearance in the Senior Cup final saw a second successive 2-0 win over Waterlooville. The 1997/98 season became the club's most memorable to date, with F.A. Cup success over Wycombe Wanderers. After a draw at Adams Park, 2-2, the team won the replay on penalties after another thrilling 2-2 draw at the Camrose. A new record attendance of 5,085 saw this remarkable result, as in both games Stoke had trailed at every occasion. In the 2nd Round it was an away trip to Northampton Town and, despite being under pressure for much of the game, the club earned a replay with a late equalizer. The replay saw Sky

BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY Sports beam the game live, and another crowd of nearly 5,000 saw Stoke this time go out on penalties on a night that has been regarded as the coldest ever in Basingstoke! League form was difficult at this time and it needed a run of just four defeats in twenty-one games to ensure the club finished in the top half. The club played sixty-nine games that season, the last match being the Full Members Cup Final against Hendon, who deservedly won 4-1 on the night. 1998/99 saw the club reach the 1st round of the F.A. Cup again, losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth after a memorable 4th qualifying round win at Dover Athletic. The next few years saw the club consolidating its position in the Ryman Premier League before becoming members of the newly formed Nationwide Conference South in season 2004/05. During season 2006/07 the club had a marvellous F.A Cup run, creating club history when beating Chesterfield 0-1 on their own ground in the First Round Proper. Unfortunately the run ended in the Second Round Proper, losing narrowly to near neighbours Aldershot Town in a replay at the Camrose. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won in season 2007/2008, beating local rivals Farnborough in the final at Bournemouth, and again in the 2013/2014 season, beating Havant and Waterlooville at Fratton Park, Portsmouth. The club suffered relegation to the Southern League at the end of the 2015/2016 season. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won again in season 2016/2017, beating AFC Bournemouth on penalties after the game finished all square in normal time. The last couple of seasons have seen comfortable mid table finishes. A bit of fun for visiting supporters; name the ex-basingstoke Town players here. After a series of successful and exciting conversations over the last few weeks, we have managed to secure our number one target in Martin Kuhl. Martin is a highly decorated Pro Licenced coach having won promotions with both Aldershot and Wycombe Wanderers. He also played a major role at Reading Football Club working under Brian McDermott, Nigel Atkins and most recently Jaap Stam. Alongside that role Martin managed one of Reading s most successful Under 23 sides that the club had produced. Martin will be assisted by Dan Brownlie, who within a short space of time has made a big impact to our everchanging and growing Community Club. Martin is already well equipped to take control with immediate effect having watched numerous games over recent weeks to familiarise himself with our squad. We d like to thank Terry for all of his efforts and for stepping in so quickly following Jason s departure. Terry will revert to his role of Director of Football along with the added responsibility of being the chair of the Community Board. Martin will be officially introduced to the first team tomorrow evening as they prepare for Kings Langley on Saturday afternoon which will be Martin s first game in charge. Since the Kings Langley game fell foul of the rain on Saturday, tonight will be Martin s first game in charge of Basingstoke Town.

THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE TOWN Basingstoke Town v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Tuesday 27th November 2018 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney made the short journey to Basingstoke looking for a first win since late September '18 in the league. For Basingstoke Town this was the first local league derby since Easter 1971 when they played Thorneycrofts. Initial play was scrappy but the game came to life on 5 minutes with a goal from Hartley. Loose defensive play around the right side of the 'stoke penalty box saw Romario Hart gain possession and he scored with a low shot past Colm McAdden in the Basingstoke goal. (0-1) Basingstoke responded well and good interpassing in midfield gave Ben Wright a chance, which he fired over from the edge of the box. A minute later the Row defence were all at sea when a long clearance found Sam Argent in the clear, with a one-on-one with Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois. The young Hartley keeper pulled off a good save from Argent's shot. In another minute play moved to the other end and a fluent move down the left ended with a Nic Ciardini shot being deflected over the bar. Chances were coming thick and fast. Just a minute later, Sam Argent made good progress down the right and his cross saw Ben Wright's effort blocked. Then it was Hartley's turn. A long free kick from Josh Webb almost found the head of Jack Ball as the ball just eluded the back post. 34 On seventeen minutes, a crisp move by Hartley culminated in a good cross from Louie Paget which Nic Ciardini just missed at the back post. Ross Cook was soon to come on for Ciardini, who picked up an injury. Basingstoke pulled level on 29 minutes. They gained possession on the left and a clever turn from Ben Wright gave himself a shooting chance. Desbois managed to parry the shot but the ball spun across the goal and Sam Deadfield managed to squeeze his shot home at the back post. (1-1) It almost got better for 'stoke a minute later when a good build up saw Jack McKnight fire in a shot which went just over the crossbar. The Row managed to get an edge in the latter part of the half but without creating a clear opening. However, on 44 minutes a good move down the left involving several players gave Rowan Vine a chance, which he fired wildly over. HT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 1 The 'stoke started the half on the front foot and some good play on the right saw a cross which enabled Ben Wright and Jack McKnight to combine to set up Sam Argent. Desbois was quickly off his line and just managed to deflect the former Row striker's effort wide. The Row started to take a firm grip on the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 58 minutes. 'Stoke had chances to clear but a miscue gave the Row the chance and Ross Cook turned and fired home. (1-2)

THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE TOWN Four minutes later, the dangerous Cook almost added another but fired wide after a good Hartley move. Basingstoke came into the game approaching the mid point of the second half and, on 66 minutes, a corner from McKnight saw a header pushed over by Desbois. On 76 minutes, after being on top for a spell, the Row clinched the match with an excellent goal. Good play down the right saw a cross field ball to Louie Paget. The young defender took aim and fired in an unstoppable shot from around 25 yards. (1-3) Basingstoke finished strongly and a dangerous corner resulted in an effort from Argent which was blocked. The final whistle confirmed a deserved win for the Row after a sparkling performance. Basingstoke were good in parts - especially in midfield - but overall seemed to struggle with the desire of the villagers. [D Graham] FT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 3 BASINGSTOKE TOWN: Colm McAdden, Zidan Akers, Robert Gerrard, Charlie Kennedy, Harry Philby, Dan Baylis, Dean Stow, Jack McKnight, Sam Argent, Sam Deadfield, Ben Wright. Subs: Shane Hollamby, Mitchell Parker, Jim Orvis, Liam Hunt, Cameron Kennedy. HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Jack French, Romario Hart, Josh Webb, Rowan Vine, Nic Ciardini, Marley Ridge. 35 Subs: Tyron Smith, Steven Duff, Steve Noakes, Ross Cook, Michael Campbell. After the game, David spoke with Hartley Wintney's joint first team manager, Dan Turkington. "We are delighted and really proud of our team. They had a clear plan and they executed it well. It's always good to win a local derby and the entire team, plus substitutes, played well, with a good, crafted display. "I was also delighted that Romario Hart got his first goal for the club; he looked threatening all night. And Louie Paget will rarely hit a shot as good as that one for the third goal. All in all a great night for the Row." Anthony Millerick later added: It was a fantastic result for us and we need to take this momentum forward now. Full steam ahead for the Chesham game - same attitude, same work rate and same desire. If we do that we ll continue to get good results.
