HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its pre- H sent ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary/Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the embryo stages of this venture. Further investments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under manager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe

A PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest. In season the club consolidated its CCL Premier Division membership by finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as the club's Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row were within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic exprofessional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement.

WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 27 th August 2018 v FARNBOROUGH FC Kick Off: 3.00pm ood afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen G and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this Evo-Stik League South, Premier South Division fixture against Farnborough FC. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. Our visitors this afternoon are without a doubt our more illustrious neighbours and boast an impressive if somewhat chequered history. They have a fantastic home ground which is the envy of most clubs and which for me is certainly a reality check in terms of the progress we have made and still have to make as a club. Farnborough have started the season well winning their first two games; 3-1 at home to Wimborne on the opening day and 3-0 away at Staines the following Tuesday. An away defeat 2-1 at Hendon was followed by a trip to Merthyr. At the time of writing this programme the game has not yet taken place. Apologies but deadlines are deadlines Our league season has started spectacularly well with an opening day victory at the much fancied Poole Town, a hard fought 1 nil win over Gosport Borough, followed by a heart stopping 2-1 win at home to Frome. Frome were probably the best organised side we have played to date and tried to boss the game from the outset. Our first half was functional and pretty much unspectacular as we bedded ourselves into the game. Our second half performance was much improved and even though we left it late we secured victory courtesy of a well taken Cards goal and ultimately a rattling strike from Nathan Smart deep into stoppage time. Nathan s strike more than compensated for the penalty miss and was a bonus when it looked like the spoils were going to be shared. We are due to make our bow in this seasons FA Cup on 25 August with a tricky looking tie away at Baffins Milton Rovers. It s a competition that we have an affinity with and certainly there is always a buzz when FA Cup time comes around. We are striving hard to improve all aspects of the club and will be introducing some exciting new ventures in the coming weeks. We will be aiming to increase opportunities for our COMMERCIAL PARTNERS to gain brand exposure - with 'hartleyfc-online'. Commencing shortly, we will deliver LIVE Match day Commentary home games via internet radio - PLUS our own YouTube channel showing Match Highlights, and interviews; and other features about 'The Row' Commercial/Community ac-

VS FARNBOROUGH FC : 27 AUGUST 2018 I am also acutely aware that the playing surface is not at its best. This is a culmination of the end of season works not being successful largely due to the shortage of rainfall. We have carried out additional treatment works this week and will fertilise and reseed shortly. Our successes on the pitch over the past 4 seasons has outstripped our off field organisation and this is an area where we are aware that we need to step up to the plate. We currently survive on the phenomenal work of a few dedicated volunteers. We need more help in all departments from commercial assistance ground maintenance, kit washing, catering and stewarding. If you can help in any way please make yourself known to any committee member. We are always looking for active people who can help drive the club forward. To maintain our status we have certain improvements that we need to undertake and need help to get these works up and running. We also have live planning permission for a permanent toilet block and an extension to the Club House. If there is anyone who fancies taking on the challenge of raising the funds for these improvements please step forward. Hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon. Please get behind the team and as usual, thank you for your support.

TODAY S MATCH SPONSOR Hartley Wintney FC would like to thank HART TAXIS for their continued sponsorship of the Club. If you are interested in match day sponsorship please ask at the bar for further information. #UTR

TURKS TALKS Welcome to everyone from Farnborough FC. Today's game should be a cracker with both teams starting the season brightly. Added spice will be given to the fixture with our boys having beat Farnborough last year in the cup. We are looking forward to playing them at least twice this term and hope for the same result. Our season has started amazingly well with a maximum of nine points from our three league games against established and fancied opposition. Hopefully we have also had a win in the FA Cup on Saturday to boost the clubs coffers! If not we are sorry... The squad is high in spirits, the training from Sam, Luke, Mark and Keith is slick and we are happy with all concerned. Thank you for all your continued support to us YOU really do make the difference. Let's get it done... Regards SAM SPEAKS Good afternoon and welcome to the Supporters and Officials from Farnborough Football Club. To everyone connected with Hartley Wintney, I want to express my thanks for making me feel welcome from the first day. To Luke, Noakesy, Elayne, Eric, Millers and Luke Tuffs for all their hard work especially behind the scenes. Not forgetting Colin whose match day organisation is vital and he makes sure all the players are looked after with kit. The club runs like clockwork and this is a fundamental aspect in the clubs recent success. My connection with the club goes back years albeit mainly finishing second to Hartley in my Camberley days. Our matches were always tightly contested and its fantastic to see many of our squad progressing up the leagues. A real testament to the club, and the staff. Our season has started brightly with three wins out of 3 in the league. All three matches have been different in the ways we have won games. From leading from the front to being behind. This shows what tremendous character the players have and furthermore the extra push from the supporters on Saturday against Frome gave us the energy and belief to go one and get all three points. We know that it is a long season and as with any good side, we know there is always something we can improve, however small it may be. The squad has trained well. They are all very receptive and I believe they are getting the benefit of an experienced coaching and management staff. I look forward to meeting all of you this season. #UTR. Sam 1st Team Coach.

WHAT THE PAPERS SAID: FROME TOWN Hartley Wintney maintained their perfect start to the league campaign with a strong second half performance after trailing at the interval. The Row had the first chance on 8 minutes when Nic Ciardini got free on the left and his cross was fired wide by Mike Campbell. But it was Frome that then had a good spell and took the lead on 10 minutes. Will Hailston created space down the middle and his threaded pass found Matt Morris behind the Row defence. The full-back saw his first effort blocked by the out-rushing Adam Desbois, but Morris followed up to force the ball into the net. (0-1) Two minutes later the visitors created another chance and Kriss Scott s effort found Desbois well positioned to save. Hartley then came into the game and on 18 minutes Ciardini created space for a shot on the edge of the penalty box and was unlucky to see his effort blocked. Frome continued to pose a threat, mainly through the promptings of Will Hailston who continually found space. However, the Row responded and on the stroke of half time had a strong penalty claim for hand ball turned down. HALF TIME: HARTLEY WINTNEY 0 FROME TOWN 1 Hartley improved after the break and on 48 minutes a Ty Smith shot was charged down after good work by Claudio Herbert. The Row pressure continued and a long shot on 52 minutes from Josh Webb found Darren Bechet well positioned to save. Frome had a chance on 59 minutes when Matt Morris set up Kriss Scott, who fired over from the edge of the box. Soon after, Frome 'keeper Bechet was injured and left the field. The Row piled on the pressure and a corner on 68 minutes from Herbert almost found the head of Liam Eagle. A minute later, a series of substitutions by Hartley saw the pressure intensify. On 84 minutes a Jack French through ball found Nic Ciardini on the run and the Row striker fired past the outrushing substitute goalie, Dan Greaves, from 20 yards for the equaliser. (1-1) From the kick-off, Ollie Knowles tried an audacious effort from some 60 yards and Desbois did well to catch the ball under the crossbar. Hartley resumed the attacking and on 88 minutes they were awarded a penalty when Mike Campbell was pushed over in the box following a cross from Nick Hutchings. Nic Ciardini took the spot kick but Greaves guessed right and saved comfortably. Seven minutes were added and in the 95th minute the Row finally got the breakthrough by scoring the winner. A Herbert corner on the left saw a Liam Eagle header blocked, and it was Nathan Smart who reacted quickest to fire home from close range. There was still time for Ciardini to send a long pass to Campbell down the middle but the striker was off target with his shot. [D Graham] HARTLEY WINTNEY 2 FROME TOWN 1 Attendance: 225

WHAT THE FANS SAID: FROME TOWN UNBELIEVABLE. THE LATE LATE LATE SHOW! The lads decided to leave it as late as possible and keeping us fans on tenterhooks before snatching two goals in the closing stages to keep up their 100 per cent record which must astonish some of the bigger clubs in the league. What happened at the end made anything before that not terribly exciting. The opposition went ahead early on through a mix up in our defence and from then on their defence played exceptionally well to frustrate and blunt our attack, and slow the game down. although the ref did miss a blatant handball on one occasion, whilst we seemed to be very pedestrian in midfield. It was only when our three subs were introduced late in the second half that changed the game with Bally, Matt and Frenchie coming on and moving Nathan forward that the pace and urgency quickened markedly and we began to unsettle their defence so that in the final hectic few minutes Nic (a hero one minute and the villain the next) equalised when put through by Frenchie, and then he missed from the penalty spot with a pretty poor effort, but all was forgiven when Nathan hammered home the winner from a Liam knock-down, and we all went home very happy. Judging from the boisterous noises from the dressing room afterwards I think the lads were pretty happy too. Nathan Smart deservedly was man of the match not only for the winner but also his performance in the second half by injecting the necessary pace and urgency needed and ridding himself of the shackles of playing full back. Well as I have said before our wonderful adventure goes on and on and we are still stuck at the top of the tree!!! Next up an FA Cup Tie against lower league opposition, and I hope we do not show any complacency in going into that game and then on Bank Holiday Monday is the mouth-watering local derby again Farnborough where the result is anybody's guess, but I am sure with our team spirit and commitment we will be up for it. COME ON THE ROW!!! Nick Vint

Date: 18th August 2018 Frome Scorers: Morris (12) Hendon Scorers: Ciardini (85), Smart (90+5) Attendance: 221 This was Frome s first ever visit to newly promoted Hartley Wintney and with Hartley winning their first 2 games against highly fancied Poole & Gosport, Frome expected a tough test. In the end that's exactly how it turned out with a second successive defeat away from home although, once again, Frome will consider themselves somewhat unfortunate not to have taken something from the game. Ryan Bath came into the side up front in place of Kane Simpson, whilst Will Hailston replaced Dan Demkiv in a wide role as the changes from the Tiverton game the previous Tuesday. Morris opens his account There's no disputing Frome were the better side in the first half and they took a deserved lead in the 12th minute when some Hailston trickery around the edge of the area released Morris to score. Hartley Wintney looked threatening on the counter, with former Frome player Claudio Herbert particularly lively but the visitors defence held firm and neither goalkeeper was really threatened as both sides struggled to create a clear opportunity. Around the half hour mark a great cross field ball from Knowles found Hailston in space but he was unable to shake off the last defender an shortly afterwards the home striker broke quickly but Conor McCormack was alert to the danger with a saving tackle. Hartley Wintney had a loud appeal for a penalty for handball turned down on the stroke of half time. Danny between the sticks WHAT FROME TOWN SAID The hosts started strongly in the second half and enjoyed by far the most possession, again without creating any clear chances. Simpson replaced Bath and Demkiv came on for Cottle and whilst Frome were playing nice football in spells they didn t create many clear cut chances, nor did their goal come under any real pressure. The game changed in the 83rd when Darren Bechet had to leave the field injured, replaced by manager Danny Greaves in goal. Penalty save and last minute defeat, a speculative long ball in the 85th minute saw Ciardini beat the centre backs for pace and go 1v1 against the keeper to level the score giving Greaves no chance. With the scores level the referee indicated 7 minutes of injury time and In the 92nd a penalty was harshly awarded for the hosts for a push in the area. Against the odds Greaves got down smartly to save and you felt a point each was on the cards and probably just about right on the balance of play. However in the 95th minute a Hartley corner was headed up into the air only for the ball to be volleyed home as it dropped by Nathan Smart giving the hosts the 3 points. Both teams deserve credit for trying to win the game right until the end but Frome will be wanting to get their first league victory of the season sooner rather than later. There s no disputing the quality and style of football is very pleasing to the eye and just that little bit of luck is needed at times as they always say it s a funny old game.

Farnborough Football Club is the rebirth of Farnborough Town FC that was liquidated on 25 July Farnborough Football Club started life in season 2007/08 in the Southern League Division One South & West and it was a season that turned to glory as the club won the Championship and with it promotion to the Southern League Premier Division. The League title was secured under manager Andy Clement with 89 points and an impressive 120 goals being scored in the process that underlined a fantastic achievement for the clubs new beginnings. Despite the success, the club and Andy Clement mutually agreed that due to the extra demands in the next step up a change of manager would be made and former Crawley Town and Basingstoke Town manager Francis Vines took up the reigns in the summer of 2008, assisted by former Reading and Basingstoke Town midfielder Steve Richardson. Farnborough s Cherrywood Road ground had a large face-lift and investment was being put into a number of areas under the leadership of former Chairman Simon Hollis and the Board of Directors. Boro almost made it back-to-back promotions, just missing out in the BGB Southern Premier play-off final, losing 1-0 to Gloucester City. That came after Vines men had led the way for six months of the campaign, before losing the title to Corby Town on the final game of the season. FARNBOROUGH FC CLUB HISTORY In the summer of 2009, it was announced that Vines would not remain as manager, with Steve King replacing him as first team boss. Justin Skinner also arrived as assistant manager, with both signing full-time deals. Season saw Farnborough go on onto win the Southern League and with it promotion to the Blue Square South. Season saw Boro for the second time in their short history follow up a Championship with a second place finish, and after accounting for Woking in a two legged play-off semi-final, fell again at the last hurdle, Ebbsfleet United winning promotion to the Blue Square Premier in front of a record Rushmoor Community Stadium crowd exceeding 4,000.Steve King left the club in May 2011, replaced by former Hayes & Yeading manager Garry Haylock, and the club declared that it was transferr ing to full time status. Following a poor run of results, Haylock s tenure as manager came to an end in November 2011, and his replacement came in the guise of Chertsey Town manager Spencer Day, and a return to part time football. With the change of manager came an upturn of fortunes, and a run of six successive league wins spanning January through March pulled Boro away from the danger zone, although a five point deduction imposed by the Football Conference took the club back into trouble, but Blue Square South football was secured on the penultimate Saturday with a solitary goal victory over Havant & Waterlooville.

FARNBOROUGH FC CLUB HISTORY In 2012/13 the club enjoyed a relatively successful season on the pitch, playing a good brand of football but again were blighted by off field issues, a four point deduction was confirmed in January for the playing of an ineligible player due to International Clearance issues and was followed by the loss of a further ten points after the club entered administration on the eve of the final league match of the season, despite this the club still finished a creditable 14th place. Season 2013/14 encountered early problems in that despite the club coming out of administration and entering a CVA there were a number of issues involving our membership of The Conference that needed to be resolved. We were finally granted permission to play after the first 5 matches had been postponed and took the field on Saturday 7 September against Dover Athletic winning 1-0. On the positive side, the club was also boosted by a major sponsorship deal with well known bookmakers Paddy Power. Despite the initial difficulties Boro retained their status in the Football Conference South and finished the season in a respectable 16th position. Historical financial debt problems continued to dog the club in season 2014/15 which remained under a CVA and this inevitably left the manager with no choice but to implement a reduced player budget. The consequences of this long term handicap finally came home to roost when Boro finished 20th in the Vanarama Conference South suffering relegation to the Ryman Premier. The 2015/16 season didn t start much better. An application during the close season for Farnborough to vary the terms of it s CVA dragged on and wasn t settled until 5 weeks into the new season, too late to implement the 1 league drop punishment for such action. Instead we were placed in the impossible position that we would be relegated at the end of the season regardless, unless we finished in the bottom 4 in which case it would be a double relegation! Added to this we were again starting the season 5 weeks late having to play catch-up. Despite an impressive 5-1 win at home to Lewes in our first game of the season, the very tight playing budget coupled with the knowledge we were being relegated meant the manager struggled to get in the right calibre of players and soon we found ourselves in a double relegation spot, where we remained for the majority of the season. Off the field things were beginning to look a little brighter, thanks to the hard work of the owners, the CVA was paid off early and the club was debt free for the first time in many years! A final push in the last 10 matches of the season saw Farnborough turn their form around and 25 points out of a possible 30 saw us climb out of the relegation zone and finish 18th. So it was just the one league relegation punishment but a re-defining of the league s geographical borders also resulted in a sideways move to the Southern Central.

FARNBOROUGH FC CLUB HISTORY 2016/17 season got off to a good start, with Farnborough briefly leading the charge before dropping back to the second position behind Royston Town. A season long chase ensued, waiting for Royston to slip up, a slip that never materialised, and the Boro had to settle for second place and home draw in the playoffs. The team stayed stable throughout the season, based on the successful late season squad from the previous year with a few local favourites in the guise of Nic Ciardini, Josh Huggins and Perry Coles added. The start of the season saw us graced by the presence of former Norwich/Reading/ Bristol Rovers star, Jamie Cureton, before he departed for higher level football at Eastleigh. On the coaching side, long time assistant coach, Leigh Dynan, left to pursue a manager's role at Whyteleafe, but Spencer wasted no time in bringing in Jon Reed whose knowledge of the Southern league proved to be invaluable. A late season run by Egham Town saw them arrive at The Rushmoor Community Stadium as playoff semi final opponents but Farnborough were also a team in form, and having secured the services of Cureton again, along with former favourite, Scott Donnelly, were just too strong, coming out on top with a 4-0 winning score line. Onto the playoff final, and in front of 1000 plus Boro supporters, the Yellows secured a nervous, but comfortable 2-0 victory over Barton Rovers to signify their return to the Southern Premier League. The 2017/18 season started off in disaster when new recruits Connor Calcutt and Kieron Forbes both picked up serious injuries in our final pre-season match against Molesey Town. This hampered our progress and lead to some disappointing results. With the reorganisation of the leagues, and only 1 team being relegated, the board took the decision to reduce the playing budget around Christmas time and the yellows fielded a very young, but still very exciting team for the remainder of the season. Never in danger of relegation, Boro finished towards the lower end of the table. However, there were some great highlights along the way, most notably silencing the home crowd at eventual league winners, Hereford, beating them 1-0 and beating long time league leaders King s Lynn Town 5-2 at home against all expectations.

FARNBOROUGH FC CLUB HISTORY THE EARLY YEARS FROM WIKIPEDIA The club was established as Farnborough Town in 1967 and joined the Surrey Senior League in 1968.[Their first league match saw them beat Surbiton Byron 7 6. The season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 2 1 at Yeovil Town. Another first round appearance in ended with a 2 1 defeat at Barking. They reached the first round again the following season and faced Football League opposition for the first time, losing 3 0 at Hereford United. The season also saw them win the Division One title, resulting in promotion to the Premier Division. They were Premier Division runners-up behind Leytonstone/Ilford in and were promoted to the Football Conference as Leytonstone/Ilford were unable to be promoted due to their ground failing to meet the necessary criteria. Farnborough were relegated at the end of their first season in the Conference and were placed in the Premier Division of the Southern League. They won the division at the first attempt to earn promotion back to the Conference. After reaching the first round of the FA Cup in all but one of the seasons between and , the club progressed beyond the first round for the first time in ; after a first round replay win over Halesowen Town, they defeated Third Division Torquay United 4 3 in a second round replay. They were drawn at home to top division West Ham. With the game switched to the Boleyn Ground, they held West Ham to a 1 1 draw before losing the replay 1 0. The season also saw them finish fifth in the Conference, but they were relegated back to the Southern League at the end of the following season. Farnborough were Southern League champions again in , making an immediate return to the Conference. The club spent five seasons in the Conference until being relegated at the end of the season, which had seen them finish bottom of the table. They were placed in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League, which they went on to win in , resulting in promotion back to the Conference. In the club progressed beyond the first round of the FA Cup for a second time; after a 5 1 against at Harrogate Town in the first round, they defeated Southport 3 0 in the second round and Third Division Darlington 3 2 in the third round. They were then drawn at home to Arsenal in the fourth round, although the game was switched to Highbury. Following a 5 1 defeat, manager Graham Westley left the club, also taking seven players with him as he moved to Stevenage Borough. Farnborough remained in the Conference (and its new top division the Conference National) until the end of the season, when they were relegated to the Conference South. A third-place finish in saw them qualify for the promotion play-offs, but they lost 3 0 to Histon in the semi-finals.

A GROUND HOPPERS VIEW With acknowledgement to Modus Hopper Random Frome With View - Football Can Be Cruel Context: Third league game of the season for both sides. Hartley Wintney have started with two wins, whereas Frome have one point from an opening-day draw. The hosts have shot up from Step 5 in recent years, winning their Step 3 place through last season s play-offs. Frome are established in this league and had midtable respectability last season In one sentence: Harsh on Frome, whose sub keeper-manager had saved a last minute penalty, but this Hartley Wintney side do not know when they are beaten. So what? Still very early in the season but the clubs find themselves near opposite ends of the table. Hartley Wintney s 100% record is good enough for second place on goal difference. Frome Town are just outside the bottom three. Match Report: Frome took an early lead, Matt Morris bundling the ball past home keeper Adam Desbois. Adam is a 17-year old on Reading s books, and he apparently missed the last game because of an England call-up. The rest of the first half had few highlights. There was plenty of effort and hard work from both sides, but Frome s defence coped easily with Hartley Wintney s attempts to draw level. Desbois varied his distribution methods and could often be found as a sweeperkeeper nearer the halfway line than the goal-line. He has a kick like a cannon and his was a remarkable performance for his age. The home side tried to exploit the pace of Romari Hart and always got the ball forward quickly, but Frome s defence was excellent and well-organised. The home supporters called for a penalty just before the break, claiming a raised defensive hand had touched the ball. I was not in a good position to give the neutral s judgement In the second half, Frome missed a good chance (though it seemed to me that two players were offside) and then Hartley Wintney missed their best one so far as a right-wing cross from Claudio Herbert went past everyone in the area. The hinge point of the game came with the departure due to injury of Frome keeper Darren Bechet. The manager Dan Greaves replaced him, and thankfully for my spreadsheet, was wearing the same colours. He couldn t do anything about the equalising goal that came from Nicholas Ciardini as he burst through the middle of the defensive line. Frome tried but failed to catch Desbois out of position from the restart. The last few minutes were end-to-end entertainment as both sides went for the win, but as we entered the 90th minute an inexplicable push in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the home side. Taken by Ciardini, it was an easy save for Greaves low to his right. However, there was time for a cruel winning goal, again with no chance for Greaves. Nathan Smart goes down as the home hero, gleefully scoring the winning goal in the 5th minute of stoppage time. Joy and despair, victory and defeat. Frome looked devastated, and who can blame them they had led from the 12th to the 85th minute. Even as a neutral, never leave early.
