HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 19 th January 2019 vs Salisbury FC Kick Off: 3.00pm to secure maximum points to bolster their objectives. Last Saturday we visited Walton Casuals at their newly opened and impressive Xcel Arena. The ground is shared with Walton & Hersham. Ground sharing may well be the future, so I wonder what the thoughts of our fans (and Fleet Town's) might be if Hart Council were to offer us the use of such a facility? Food for thought, eh? Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this Evo-Stik League South, Premier South Division fixture against high flying Salisbury FC. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. We also extend a warm welcome to today's match officials and hope that they too enjoy the Hartley hospitality. Our visitors this afternoon are currently 4th in the league with 45 points from 23 games. Under the management of Steve Claridge, the Whites were promoted last season and now find themselves handily placed for a tilt at the top slot, and at the least in with a massive shout for the play-off places. They are unbeaten in their last 7 league outings. The Whites also had a good FA Trophy run, which was halted last week when they lost 4-1 to Carshalton Athletic. We are currently in 12th place in the league with 33 points from 25 games. Our form in our last six outings shows that we have won 2, lost 2 and drawn 2. This is an extraordinarily tight league with a plethora of teams whose fate could be relegation come the end of the season. Every point is crucial for us, and today both sides will be looking Anyway, on to the game. A close fought encounter saw us run out 2-1 winners with goals from Mitch and Sal. The game was marred by the Walton skipper sustaining a broken leg. We wish him well in his recovery. Our other sides were also in action on Saturday. The Reserves turned the tables on Eversley, recording a 3-2 win to give them a home tie against Bromley in the next round of the Challenge Plate. Our goal scorers on the day were Gracious Musonda, Jack Mitchell and Cam Roovis. Elsewhere, the A Team returned to winning ways when they defeated Wey Valley 5-2. This moves Lord Storey's Orange Army within 7 points of winning the league. It may even be closer if the points against Four Marks are awarded. Today the Reserves make the journey to Leverstock Green for the second time, the last match being abandoned at half time just before Christmas, and the third team make the short trip to Fleet Spurs for a local derby. This will be another stern test for the boys, as undoubtedly there will be a number of sides hoping to halt any celebrations. I sincerely hope the boys can step up to the plate and get back on an unbeaten run to secure both league and, hopefully, cup successes. 6

VS SALISBURY : 19th JAN 2019 The youth team game last Wednesday was postponed after Kye Nash and Zach Kench were injured in a car accident whilst travelling to the game. Both are thankfully not seriously injured. Back to today's encounter, this promises to be a keenly contested match where we will be looking for 3 points to help us pull away from the relegation melee. When the two sides last met, Salisbury ran out 4-2 winners, both our goals that day being scored by Rowan Vine. Please get behind the boys today, your support is always appreciated by the management and the players. Luke #UTR THE ROW 100 CLUB Have you signed up or renewed membership to our 100 Club yet? 8 VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to everyone associated with Salisbury FC. I'm stepping in for our management duo today, as promised if they didn t get something to me on time! Remembering back to that cold, damp night in November when we hosted Met Police and were poor in losing 4-1, I wished for a return to the not so distant days when we had pace and workrate all across the pitch, especially at the top end. With Mikey Campbell out injured, we were so clearly lacking it that night, and not just that night. Millers called me the next day, clearly as unhappy at the performance as I was, and I sensed there was a clear vision developing for how the team needed to develop. Although I missed the league game at Tiverton - having endured the drubbing we got in the FA Trophy replay - it was clear from comments Anthony passed on afterwards that going there with a team devoid of several regulars and with youngsters in their place, the way in which the team secured a 1-1 draw shone a light on the path forward. As I saw it we needed more of what we had before: energy, pace, the willingness to chase down, work hard, and we needed to recover the team spirit that had helped bring the Club so far. There were some unsettling influences - no names, no pack drill, but even as supporters we could sense it, and sometimes see and hear it on the pitch. In one case I'm willing to concede that the outpouring of less than positive vibes was down to pure frustration from a player who gave the Club everything he had. In a couple of other cases it was just negativity borne of their own self importance or insecurity. Harsh? No, because they let down their teammates, players who were giving 8 their all. All those players are still with us. Not all who left did so because they weren t wanted, I should also add. It took good, bold management to call the changes. Releasing experienced, skilled players - players that had performed well for us in the past - has risks, and it needs a few poor performances to arrive at the point where your hand is forced and you have to commit to change, but even then it's only possible if you have a clear plan and you know where to find the answers. The players who arrived have brought energy, pace, strength, skill and a clear desire to work hard and contribute to the team, rather than bathe in their own ability by coming alive when and if it suits them. The transformation was immediate, though of course with time it promises to mature, particularly in terms of consistency and the kind of cohesive play that comes from players knowing their teammates well. We've seen the videos of the squad singing the Row song after victories, most recently at Walton, and that tells us as fans, helpers and committee members that the Hartley spirit is back. We mustn't underestimate it, it can be measured in all the times players have pushed themselves to make that last ditch saving tackle, that block on the line, or that lung bursting run to get on the end of a cross that wins us the game. It takes real motivation for any of us to push ourselves to the limit, in whatever we do, and there's nothing like knowing how much it means to everyone around you to make you push yourself that bit harder. Enjoy the game. Up the Row! KOB

THE PAPERS SAID : SWINDON SUPERMARINE Hartley Wintney v Swindon Supermarine, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Tues 1st January 2019 Report by David Graham lingered on the ball too long before making a clearance. He was robbed by the alert Stuart Fleetwood, who was squeezed out by back-tracking defenders. Hartley Wintney hosted the in-form Swindon Supermarine and an entertaining match ended all square. After a promising start by the Row it was the Marine who took the lead on 6 minutes. A fast break down the right wing enabled Conor McDonagh to drift in behind the Hartley defence. The striker cut the ball back and Henry Spalding scored from the edge of the box with a low shot. (0-1) On 8 minutes, a corner from Jack French found the head of Mickel Platt who headed just wide. Platt was again involved on 18 minutes when he combined well with Mitchell Parker and shot just over the bar. The Row pulled level on 21 minutes. After a spell of pressure, Hartley built up a good attack and Jack French played Marley Ridge in. The midfielder managed to squeeze the ball past Will Henry in the Swindon goal and into the net. (1-1) Things got even better for Hartley a minute later when Mickel Platt set up Mitchell Parker, who fired in a low shot from the edge of the box. (2-1) On 28 minutes, a long clearance found McDonagh and his lob went just over the bar. Three minutes later Josh Webb and Joe Felix combined well down the left and the latter s low strike brought out a good save from Henry at full stretch. A minute later, a Josh Webb corner was flicked on and a header from Platt saw another good save by Henry. But the Row had a scare four minutes later after Adam Desbois 13 Felix and Webb combined well down the left and the latter s parting shot from 20 yards went just over. Felix was soon in action at the opposite end of the field. A dangerous cross from the left by Michael Hopkins looked odds on for a Marine head when Felix came from nowhere to head clear. Approaching half time saw a Dan Stewart shot arrive at Parker, who quickly set up Platt and he again brought out a smart save from Henry. In added time the Marine had two efforts and from the first they should have scored. Fleetwood managed to get free on the right and his cross found McDonagh some 6 yards from goal. However, the striker shot past the post. There was still time for Ryan Campbell to record another effort for the visitors HT: HARTLEY 2 SWINDON S/MARINE 1 It took Marine just one minute to get on level terms after the re-start. A right wing corner from Spalding found the head of Jerel Ifil, who headed powerfully home unchallenged. (2-2) On 58 minutes, the Row s chances for a win greatly diminished. A fierce challenge by Hadda Zongo; who d had a decent game to that point; on Matt Williams saw referee, Sunny Gill, issue a straight red card, thus reducing the home side to ten men. Shortly after, on 64 minutes, a long run from Stuart Fleetwood saw him force his way through the Row defence. However, the striker shot past when well placed to score.

THE PAPERS SAID : SWINDON SUPERMARINE On 73 minutes, Hartley had a chance when Ty Smith set-up Platt, who fired just past the post. Almost immediately, the Marine had a great chance to win the match when Jamie Edge set-up Spalding but he also shot just wide. The Row kept possession well and probed until the end. Mitchell Parker proved an effective outlet ball and led the line well. In added time the Row survived a few set pieces and held on with 10 men for a good point. FT: HARTLEY 2 SWINDON S/MARINE 2 Attendance: 247 Man of the Match: JOE FELIX HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Joe Felix, Louie Paget, Hadda Zongo, Nathan Smart, Josh Webb, Jack French, Marley Ridge, Mitchell Parker, Mickel Platt, Dan Stewart. Subs: Michael Campbell, Ty Smith (on), Salhin Abybakar, Romario Hart (on), Nic Ciardini (on) SWINDON SUPERMARINE: Will Henry, Connor Thompson, Michael Hopkins, Jamie Edge, Jerel Ifil, Matt Williams, Henry Spalding, Brad Hooper, Stuart Fleetwood, Conor McDonagh, Ryan Campbell. Subs: Joe Selman, Joe Shepherd, Dave Bampton, Dan Williamson, Kieran Diaz- Benitez After the game David caught up with Hartley joint manager, Anthony Millerick, and midfield maestro, Jack French. Anthony Millerick - I thought we were the better side in the first half, but was disappointed with the two goals we conceded. We worked hard to get our goals, whereas the Marine goals were hugely preventable. The team showed a lot of bravery 14 today in two phases of the game. Much of our play in the first half was good and adventurous, with plenty of good moves and interplay. After the sending off we were brave again and showed a lot of character to hold on and secure the point. Swindon Supermarine are a good side and very much an in-form team, which showed. At the moment we seem to be running into teams who are having their best spells of the season. Jack French - I felt the team recovered well after losing the early goal but started the second half poorly, conceding a quick equaliser. We played well with 10 men and had plenty of possession. In the end the draw was probably a fair result. Hartley Wintney v Basingstoke Town, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Saturday 5th January 2019 Report by David Graham Basingstoke Town gained a deserved win in the North Hampshire derby courtesy of two second half goals, but it was the Row who had the first chance on 2 minutes when a Jack French corner on the right found the head of Mickel Platt who headed narrowly wide. The Dragons quickly took a grip on the game, however, and Zidan Akers had three chances in a row to open the scoring. On 5 minutes he had an effort well saved by Adam Desbois. Two minutes later, a move down the right created a shot for Akers which was parried by Desbois and the follow-up from Sam Argent was blocked by Row defenders, with Nathan Smart clearing off the line. On 11 minutes, Akers tried his luck again, after being set-up by Sam Argent, but once again Desbois produced a good stop.

THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE TOWN Play evened up as the half progressed. Yet another effort was notched by Akers when, from a centre, he shot past the post. The Row mustered an overdue effort on target when Mitchell Parker's shot was saved by the well positioned Colm McAdden. On the stroke of half-time, Sam Smart made good progress down the left and his cross found Akers, who was unlucky to see his flick go just past the post. saved by Desbois. Hartley should have then scored, on 85 minutes. A spell of pressure saw Josh Webb head down to substitute Mikey Campbell, whose shot was off target from close range. The visitors had the final chance, in added time, when Oliver Harris managed to get free on a breakaway. The substitute saw his parting effort well saved by Desbois. Basingstoke held on for a deserved win. HT: HARTLEY 0 BASINGSTOKE TN 0 FT: HARTLEY 0 BASINGSTOKE TN 2 The 'stoke started the better in the second period and, on 50 minutes from a short corner on the left, a chance was created for Sam Argent, who fired narrowly wide. On 58 minutes the Row had a sight at goal when a long ball found Mitchell Parker, but the home striker shot wide. Four minutes later Basingstoke took the lead. Loose play in midfield by the Row enabled 'stoke substitute, Aaron Redford, to feed Sam Smart on the right. The winger made his way into the penalty box before unleashing a fine shot from a difficult angle which went into the net off the underside of the crossbar. (0-1) Things got better for the Dragons three minutes later, on 65 minutes. Hartley lost possession on the right of midfield. The ball was quickly moved through to Harry Pearse and he ran on and shot low past Desbois. (0-2) Hartley had a chance on 79 minutes when good play by Joe Felix down the left saw the full-back find Parker, but his effort was comfortably saved by McAddan in the 'stoke goal. On 83 minutes, a quick break by Basingstoke gave the visitors a good chance, but the winger's shot was 15 Attendance: 451 Hartley Man of the Match: ADAM DESBOIS HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Joe Felix, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Josh Webb, Jack French, Dan Stewart, Mitchell Parker, Mickel Platt, Marley Ridge. Subs: James Orvis, Drew Matthews, Shane Hollamby (on), Aaron Redford (on), Oliver Harris (on) After the game, David spoke with Anthony Millerick. "All in all it was a 'bad day at the office'. We didn't do any of the positive things we have been doing in our recent games, we didn't show any tempo or urgency, and Basingstoke were full value for the win. They outworked us during the match. "I feel we let ourselves down today," Millers continued, "but, moving forward, we must show character for the remaining matches in the season."

THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE (CUP) Basingstoke Town v Hartley Wintney, The City Security Services Ltd League Challenge Cup Third Round. Tues 8th Jan 2019 by Graham Merry, Basingstoke Gazette SALHIN Abubakar scored twice in the space of three minutes for Hartley Wintney late on, as they booked their place in the last eight of the League Cup, beating Basingstoke Town 4-1. The first good chance fell to Aaron Redford with a sweet shot from the edge of the area, but keeper, Craig Bradshaw, was able to beat it away in the 8th minute. Two minutes later, Redford was forced out of the game due to injury, after looking very lively. The rest of the first 45 minutes belonged to Hartley, as Josh Webb pulled the strings in midfield. He also opened the scoring with a superbly taken free-kick which flew into the top corner after 20 minutes. A minute later, from the opposite side of the goal, Hartley's Tyron Smith tried his luck, but this time Colm McAdden tipped the ball over. From the corner, a goal mouth scramble saw Romario Hart's shot blocked by Shane Hollamby. The visitors did not have to wait long for a second goal as, on 25 minutes, a lovely give and go pass from Smith released Abubakar and he got to the byline and crossed for Mickel Platt to score. Three minutes later, Platt was denied by the feet of McAdden. The home side then hauled themselves back into the contest on 43 minutes. Ollie Harris found Smart, who forced a corner. From this the ball came back to Sam Deadfield and his low shot squeezed in between goalkeeper and post. Then in the final minute of the half, Hartley could have been awarded a penalty, after Hollamby's robust 16 challenge on Michael Campbell. After the break, the home side came back into the contest and on 55 minutes Deadfield played a free-kick down the left channel to Smart and his cross saw Hollamby get his head on the ball, and somehow it went wide from under the bar. As the hour mark came, it looked more likely Town would level. Rob Gerrard went on a nice run, before being upended. Sub Dean Stow's free-kick hit the wall, but he got the ball back and played it out wide for Smart and, as he wriggled through sub Reece Wylie and Abubakar, he was pushed and Town were awarded a penalty. Deadfield, in slow motion, took the spot kick and Bradshaw saved and caught the rebound from Stow. This knocked the stuffing out of the home side and, six minutes later, they were 4-1 down. Hartley's third came from a low strike from Abubakar, and then, two minutes later, a nice ball from sub Harry Woodward released Platt and his cross to the back post was put away by Sal Abubakar for his second of the night. He so nearly completed a late hat-trick, but at full stretch just failed to get onto a ball from Platt. The reward for Hartley is a home tie against either Salisbury or Blackfield and Langley. Anthony Millerick, said: "It was a real team effort and we played with a lot of energy. Players have staked a claim to a shirt tonight." Hartley Wintney: Craig Bradshaw, Salhin Abubakar, Connor Gales, Nathan Smart (c), Jack Ball, Tyron Smith, Steven Duff, Josh Webb, Michael Campbell, Mickel Platt, Romario Hart. Subs: Harry Woodward (on), Jayden Englefield (on), Marley Ridge, Jack French, Reece Wylie (on)

THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Jon Couch FOOTBALL S Coming Home at last for supporters in the south-west after Truro City announced this week they are to make a welcome return to Cornwall and play the remainder of their home games back at their Treyew Road home. The White Tigers were forced out of their home ground back in August, with supermarket giant Lidl planning to build a store on the site. But now those plans have been shelved, the National League South club have been given the green light to return home and resume as the only senior football club in Cornwall. Truro had been playing their home games at Torquay United s Plainmoor ground, meaning a gruelling 180-mile round trip for Tigers supporters. Naturally, that move badly hit fan attendance figures, with the White Tigers averaging fewer than 200 fans per game because of the two-hour trip to south Devon. Their lowest recorded attendance was just 86 for their game against Hemel Hempstead Town in October, while just 52 home supporters made the trip on New Year s Day against their landlords, with 2,760 away fans making up an attendance figure of 2,812. In a statement, the club said: We are pleased to confirm that Truro City Football Club will be playing the remainder of this season s home Vanarama National League South and Buildbase FA Trophy matches at Treyew Road. The move back has been necessitated for a number of reasons, including the late withdrawal of Helical from the retail development project. It is understood that the ground s owners, JIL, are still in talks with 23 Lidl and there is still a strong possibility that the development will still go ahead sometime in the future. Now, at least with their own roof above their heads, Truro City can look to the future and a proposed move to the new 10,000-seater Stadium for Cornwall, which they would share with the Cornish Pirates rugby club. Work on that development has yet to begin, with Helical, the firm which bought Treyew Road, still in discussions about settling Truro City's 2 million contribution towards the 12m project. At the time of writing this, Truro were due to kick off their first next Vanarama National League South home match at their new permanent home against south-west rivals Weston-super -mare on Saturday January 19. The club added: We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible supporting the team at Treyew Road between now and the end of the season. If the Stadium of Cornwall really is, as promised, to become a future hotbed of senior football in the south-west, then it s important that White Tigers fans embrace the The NLP is the paper of the nonleague game and as a club we urge everybody to support the publication s efforts by purchasing the paper, or why not take out a subscription and have it delivered to your door each week.

SALISBURY FC CLUB HISTORY Salisbury FC is a phoenix club. The Whites played their first competitive game in August 2015 at Brockenhurst in the Sydenham's Wessex Premier. The new club was created by a consortium in Dec David Phillips, Ian Ridley, Jeremy Harwood, Graeme Mundy, and Steve Claridge, the latter also having the role of Team Manager - after buying the remaining assets of predecessor club, Salisbury City FC. By early April 2015, a new lease had been obtained on the Raymond McEnhill Stadium which had been purpose -built in 1997 for the old club, though much work was needed both on and off the pitch to bring it back into use. In May 2015, the FA placed the new club in the Sydenham's Wessex League Premier Division. In the later years SCFC had reached the first tier of Non-League football, so expectations of the new club were high, but one point from the first two league games did not look too auspicious. Though the fans didn't know it yet, a magical first season was underway. There followed a brilliant run of 14 matches unbeaten in all competitions, then a magnificent mid-season run of 17 consecutive wins, and a longest winning run in the league of 21 matches. Not surprisingly, attendances throughout the season were good, averaging more than 700. A stadium record of 3450 was recorded for the second leg of the FA Vase Semi-final against Hereford FC, the Whites just missing out on a trip to Wembley in a superb inaugural season. The club secured their place as Sydenham's Wessex League Premier Division Champions 2015/2016 with 6 games in hand, earning automatic promotion to 28 the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South and West for 2016/2017. In their first season at the new level, the Whites achieved remarkable success. Hereford were crowned Champions, but following several long sequences of good results, and in particular one such towards the end of the season, Salisbury entered the play-offs, narrowly defeating Evesham United before losing to Tiverton Town 2-0 in front of a massive crowd of The 2017/2018 season saw the Whites occupy second position in the League for long periods, and that is where they finished to gain promotion to the next level, formerly known as the Southern Premier League. During the season, early cup exits, to Poole Town in the FA Cup, and to Paulton Rovers in the FA Trophy, meant that only minor cups remained, but in one of these, the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Salisbury achieved a remarkable 13-nil victory over Bassett Bulldogs. Past Salisbury Football Clubs Salisbury FC may be a new club, but it follows in the footsteps of earlier Salisbury clubs going back to the 19th century, including an earlier Salisbury City, playing in the Southern League Second Division from 1906 to However, the most immediate predecessor club was formed in 1947 as Salisbury FC, later changing its name to Salisbury City FC in Playing in the Western League, the original Salisbury FC won the Second Division title in their first season, with a record attendance of 8902 watching the Championship decider against Weymouth in April 1948 at their old Victoria Park ground.

SALISBURY FC CLUB HISTORY In 1968 the Club entered the Southern League, finally achieving success in the 1985/1986 season when they finished as Southern Division runners-up to Cambridge City. They were runners-up again in 1993 but were refused promotion to the next level because of ground grading rules. That promotion, however, came 2 years later. Following Salisbury City's near demise in 2002, the club was saved by a business consortium and was then led by Neville Beal, a former Salisbury player, with former Southampton player, Nick Holmes, installed as General Manager. 2005/06 saw SCFC become Southern League Premier Division Champions, resulting in promotion to the Nationwide Conference South. After another successful campaign they gained a second successive promotion to the Blue Square Premier, where they remained for the next three seasons. Unfortunately, in the 2009/10 season the Club went into administration and were placed in the Zamaretto Southern Premier League. A new Board, led by Chairman William Harrison-Allan, appointed experienced midfielder, Darrell Clarke, as Player/Manager. The following season was again successful as promotion saw the side bounce straight back to the Blue Square Bet Conference South, and they progressed to the top layer of the Conference a season later when, after a nail-biting series of playoffs, they defeated Dover Athletic 3-2 to restore their previous status. Manager Darrell Clarke departed to progress his career at Bristol Rovers, and the youngest manager in their history, Mikey Harris, was appointed, leading them to a respectable 12th place. In the close season of 2014 disaster struck, when the SCFC Board sold their shares to two businessmen. The main 98% shareholder could not settle the Club's debts and it was removed from the Conference for non-payment. Having no league to play in was a breach of the terms of the stadium lease and, after a protracted legal tussle involving seemingly endless court appearances, the High Court ordered the winding up of the Club. The residual assets were bought by the new Salisbury FC Ltd and thus the new club was born. 29

HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC HWJFC U14 Harriers - Season Update Back on October 13th, when The Row entertained Hendon, I wrote in the HWFC programme about the HWJFC U14 Harriers looking to build on their excellent 2017/18 season. Having started well in the league in Season 2018/19 with a draw and two wins, as reported in that Hendon programme, the boys have continued to perform well in the league; albeit having only completed 3 more league games since October 13th! Fixtures having been postponed and rearranged due to a mix of weather conditions, injuries (either to our squad or the opposition, leaving either team short on numbers), plus our two Cup tournaments have been interspersed with the League fixtures. League results since the last update: Farnborough Youth Spitfires 1-5 Hartley Wintney Harriers Hartley Wintney Harriers 6-2 Farnborough Youth Spitfires Hartley Wintney Harriers 5-0 Camberley Boys Maroons The boys currently sit second in the table: I also wrote previously about going for the Treble this season. Sadly I can report that won't happen (at least this season!). Our first ever game in the Hampshire Cup ended with a 5-2 away defeat at Curley Park back in November, the boys falling at the first hurdle! 32

HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC In the League Plate however, which we won last year, we are still going strong. A First Round bye followed by a 7-0 win over Bourne Blades Badgers in the Second Round secured a QF away at Farnham Town Jaguars. In wet and windy conditions against a tough oppo, the boys progressed to the Semis with a 3-1 win. The Double is still on! At the time of writing though, the boys are a little up against it with injuries to two key players which will keep them out for a number of weeks. Our already depleted squad is a little stretched to say the least, but Phil and I are confident that those boys who are fit and able will do their best for this U14 Harriers side. Week in week out, the boys are a joy to manage and always put on a good show on Saturday mornings (apart from against Curley Park in the Hampshire Cup where we were dreadful!). The Harriers take on Farnham in the league on Saturday 19th. Good luck to the first team today. #UTR #UTJR #OneClub Pete and Phil, U14 Harriers Hartley Wintney Junior FC was founded in known as the Hawks, the club started with just 2 teams playing friendly matches. We now support over 250 children across more than 20 teams ranging from under 7s to under 18s - and we start with children from the age of 5 joining us in weekly training sessions. We welcome players of all abilities - across our age groups we have a range of teams that cater for the needs of the individual player, engendering a spirit of learning through having fun. We wish all our Junior Football Club Teams the very best of luck - but above all else, enjoy your football and being a part of this wonderful orange community! 34 THE PAPERS SAID : WALTON CASUALS Walton Casuals v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Sat 12th January 2019 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney returned to a mid table position following a hard fought win over Walton Casuals. With Adam Desbois still unfit, Hartley gave a debut to young 'keeper Sam Mason, on loan from Woking FC and a former Hartley Youth Team player. The first action of note came on six minutes and it was a goal to the Row. A strong challenge between Dan Stewart of the Row and Casuals captain, Joe Hicks, saw the ball break in favour of Hartley. Stewart and Mitchell Parker combined well and the latter created space for a shot which found the corner of the net. (0-1) Celebrations were muted as it soon became apparent that Hicks was badly injured lying on the ground. There was a four minute delay as the stricken defender was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg. There was sympathetic applause from all round the ground. The Casuals had a chance from a free kick on 17 minutes, some 25 yards from goal. Jack Battie (aka the Walton Beckham) fired wide of goal. The home side probed, and intelligent running behind the Hartley defence gave James Ewington a chance on 22 minutes as he latched on to a long pass. The striker brought out a smart save from Sam Mason. A similar run on 34 minutes enabled the striker another chance. Ewington fired a well struck shot which Sam Mason managed to push onto the post and out for a corner. In added time, Cole Brown got into a dangerous position on the left and his 34 driven cross was well cut out by Mason. HT: WALTON CASUALS 0 HARTLEY 1 Due to a number of stoppages, the game did not flow as well as expected in the second period. On 53 minutes, a free kick on the left from Battie saw a good parry by Mason to clear the ball out of danger. The Row started to gain a foothold in midfield and, on 59 minutes, Jack French fed Salhin Abubakar who cut in and saw his shot saved by a well positioned Denzel Gerrar in the Walton goal. The home side could have pulled at least level with two very good chances within a minute of each other. On 63 minutes, Lartey Sarpong played in James Ewington for a one-on-one with Mason; the striker shot past Mason but also narrowly past the post. It was 'take two' a minute later, with Ewington running through in an identical position. The striker's shot followed the same path as the previous one. And almost immediately, on 64 minutes, the misses came back to haunt the Casuals. A fluent Row move saw the ball moved leftward, out to Abubakar. The young winger used good pace to almost reach the goal line from where he hit a strong, low cross-come-shot from a difficult angle. The Casuals 'keeper appeared to have it covered but the ball somehow squirmed from his grasp and trickled over the line just inside his near post. (0-2) The Casuals responded well and it took them just 3 minutes to reduce the deficit. A strong run down the left saw an accurate low cross find Dan Bennett, who scored from close range. (1-2)

THE PAPERS SAID : WALTON CASUALS On 74 minutes, Bennett had a chance following a corner but shot wide. Hartley then had a good spell following the introduction of Tyron Smith. Another good run down the left by Abubakar saw him pass to Mikey Campbell. The substitute striker fed Ty Smith, who fired just over on 80 minutes. It was almost action replay a minute later, with Jack French shooting just over following another fluent move. Into added time and a late corner from the Casuals produced a pinball scramash in front of the Hartley goal. This was relieved with a measured hoof ball out from Ty Smith. There was still time for Mikey Campbell to create a chance for himself which he fired just over the bar. A good three points for the Row. However, most thoughts go towards Joe Hicks and the hope that he will recover as soon as is possible. [D Graham] FT: WALTON CASUALS 1 HARTLEY 2 Attendance: 252 MOTM: Salhin Abubakar WALTON CASUALS: Denzel Gerrar, Harry Mills, Ryheem Shechleford, Joe Hicks, Max Hustwick, Alex Kelly, Jack Battie, Lartey Sarpong, Dan Bennett, James Ewington, Cole Brown. Subs: Kyron Farrell, Reece Robins, Sonny Black, Marcus Mealing, Elgi Fejzo HARTLEY WINTNEY: Samuel Mason, Nathan Smart (c), Steven Duff, Jack Ball, Connor Gales, Josh Webb, Jack French, Marley Ridge, Mitchell Parker, Dan Stewart, Salhin Abubakar Subs: Mikey Campbell (on for Dan Stewart), Romario Hart, Tyron Smith (on for Josh Webb), Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget (on for Marley Ridge) After the game, David spoke with Anthony Millerick. "Walton Casuals are a good team with a good home record, and the 4G pitch made it a different game from what we are used to. We adapted our game plan, which proved successful." Millers continued, "The ingredient for success is Hard work, Discipline, Ability to counter attack, and of course a bit of luck. This is a very tight league and these are vital points for us." Mick later added this to the club forum: Most of my comments tonight are regarding off the field activities, however and most importantly, I wish a speedy recovery to Casuals Captain Joe Hicks, who left the proceedings very early in the match. To their credit, Casuals played attractive football and created many one on one opportunities throughout that could have secured the points. Some quality goalkeeping from Sam Mason was key, and he probably could not have dreamed of a debut performance such as that. Off field - the Casuals fans were immense for 90 minutes, with a varied repertoire of songs despite (evidently) a damaged drum stick - just loved the passion. The Club were great hosts and I look forward to their visit to Hartley shortly. Finally - the singing of the Hartley squad from the changing rooms afterwards told me, as a fan, just how much it meant to them to compete effectively at this level. Have a great weekend guys! :-) 35
