HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. We also welcome a new First Team Shirt Sponsor. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 22 nd December 2018 vs Poole Town FC Kick Off: 3.00pm We are currently in 10th place in the league with 25 points from 19 games. Our performance last Saturday against table topping Taunton was excellent in what can only be described as challenging conditions. That said. our performance was excellent, with the new additions to our squad performing admirably. Mickel Platt, on loan from Sky Bet Championship club QPR, opened his goal scoring account. His headed goal was sandwiched between strikes from our midfield duo of French & Webb. Great all round team performances, but for me I thought Nathan Smart's performance was immense. Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this EvoStik League South, Premier South Division fixture against Poole Town. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. On this final Saturday before the festive season, may I take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Whichever side you are supporting today, may I also thank you on behalf of all the teams out there for your support of the Non-League game. We all need you to survive. Our visitors this afternoon are currently 9th in the league with 27 points from 15 games. They arrive here at the Memorial Ground having had their last two games postponed. Prior to this they have won away at Merthyr and drawn away at Beaconsfield and Frome. They also lost in the FA Trophy to our FA Cup conquerors, Dorking Wanderers. Nicknamed the Dolphins, I am hoping that this is not an omen for the weekend weather. 6 Our other teams' games fell foul of the weather last week. The Reserve game at Tring Athletic was abandoned at half time with the score at nil all, and the A Team game v Wey Valley was also off. Off the pitch, we are of course fast approaching the festive season. I urge all members to support the bar over this period as it contributes greatly to the Club as a whole. Last Sunday was the Children's Christmas Party (see opposite). Thanks to Sam Vallance and her band of organisers for what was a fantastic day and enjoyed by all. The Christmas Raffle was also held and I'm pleased to say it turned a profit. One sad note was the lack of ticket sales by a number of our teams. Just a heads up gents - all we do is to ensure that you have the ability to play football and have the facilities to do so. The Club supports you; all we ask is that you support the Club in return. We are still looking for more volunteers in all departments from commercial assistance, ground maintenance and stewarding. If you can help in any way, please make yourself known to any committee member. Please take this request seriously. We risk losing those who are currently multi-tasking to plug the holes.

VS POOLE TOWN : 22 DEC 2018 We are also looking for kit washers and catering assistants with hygiene qualifications. These are remunerated roles, so please step forward if you are interested. Hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon. Please get behind the team and, as usual, thank you for your support. HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!! #UTR Luke From Your Editor To the players, management, all the people behind the scenes, and not least all you loyal Row supporters, here s wishing you all a very pleasant and relaxing Christmas and New Year. I will be compiling the programmes for the games on the 1st & 5th January whilst away, half way up a mountain and without the greatest of network access, so bear with me if you see some stats that haven t been updated, or articles you ve already read (assuming anyone reads this stuff!). #UTR KOB 7

MATCH SPONSOR : THE SWAN FAMILY Today s Match Day Sponsor is the Swan family and we are delighted to welcome the extended family who come together before Christmas and decided to make it a different family afternoon out at the football this year. They certainly have a rich football connection running through their family. Duncan Swan will be known to many of you as he is an avid Row supporter and is the co chair of the Hartley Wintney Junior setup. His wife, Suzanne, is Divisional Secretary of the North East Hampshire Youth League U13, overseeing the 53 teams playing at this age group. Young Cameron Swan plays for Hartley Wintney Junior U13s, and as well as it being the game just before Christmas, another reason for sponsoring this particular match where we welcome Poole Town to the Memorial Ground is because Cameron s cousin, Luke, plays for Poole Town U12s. The footballing theme doesn t end there. Luke's grandad, who will be in the VIP party today, Frank Skelly, worked for Liverpool FC from 1973 to 2007 as a scout and was assistant to Steve Heighway when their academy programme was introduced (he gets a mention in both Steven Gerrard s & Michael Owen s books). When Frank left Liverpool he joined the Premier League on a part time basis as a match day coordinator/assessor, visiting academies in the North West until The Club warmly welcomes the Swan family, thanks them for their generous support and trusts they will thoroughly enjoy their afternoon, whatever the final result! 13 CLUB & PLAYER NEWS CLUB NEWS: Hartley welcome new faces as we further strengthen the squad December 2018 We continue to strengthen the squad approaching the Christmas period of games, at the same time seeing a number of players moving on or taking time out as the club looks to secure its place in the highly competitive Southern Premier South. style, scoring our second and getting an assist, while Joe showed excellent defensive composure in helping to blunt Taunton s attacking edge. Other recent arrivals include the return of hugely popular left midfielder, Steven Duff, who played a big role in both the Club's recent promotions but had stepped down at the end of last season fearing a clash with his work commitments. Steve re-joins us on dual registration with Camberley Town and was another to have an excellent game against the league leaders. Two of the most recent arrivals are Joe Felix and Mickel Platt (Mickel is pictured above), who both join from Sky Bet Championship club QPR, where they are regular members of the club's Under 23 squad. 19 year-old defender, Joe, joins the Row on loan for a month until 7th January, whilst midfielder Mickel (18) comes to Hartley on a work experience until the end of January. Joe Felix joined QPR from west London rivals, Fulham, in June The rightback captained the Cottagers' Under-18 side. Mickel is an attacking midfield player who joined QPR from Brentford in the summer of Mickel crowned his debut for us against Taunton in 13 Hartley have also announced the signing of Dan Stewart, who was most recently at Guildford City where he had an impressive goalscoring record. A versatile midfielder and striker, Dan was a former Millwall and Charlton Athletic academy player and joined Guildford from AC London in the summer of Dan made his debut for us in the game at home to Chesham United and played very well in the Taunton win. Leaving the Club are central defender, Liam Eagle, who has joined Bracknell Town, striker Rowan Vine and midfielder Jack Beadle. Two other players have decided to take some time out of the game due to work commitments and other factors - striker Ross Cook and defender Nick Hutchings. Liam was one of Hartley's true heroes in recent seasons, having been with the club since our days in the Combined Counties League. Hartley Wintney comanager, Anthony Millerick, says: "Liam has been a massive part of our success in recent years and we'd like to thank him for all his efforts. There have been many highlights but my personal favourite was the performance, along with Jack Ball, in our play-off victory,

CLUB & PLAYER NEWS one of the best displays I've witnessed from a centre back pairing!" Rowan Vine re-joined the Row in October after his spell with the club last season. "Rowan made a tangible contribution at a vital time to the team that eventually went on to gain promotion last season," said Millers, "and we all thank him for his time with us and wish him well. Jack Beadle came to us from Met Police in October but recently decided to return to his former club, Ashford Town. With Ross and Nick it's more a case of them needing some time out and we may see them back at some point. Both are quality players when they're fully focused, but sometimes family and work life makes that difficult. Both have contributed massively in their time with us this far and we wish them well." STRIKER MITCHELL PARKER SIGNS FOR THE ROW 14th December 2018 Hartley Wintney FC is delighted to announce the signing of Mitchell Parker (pictured on the right), who joins the Row from near neighbours Basingstoke Town. The 24 year-old striker is better known for his time with Hellenic League side Reading City, where he had a good goalscoring record over several seasons before joining stoke. Mitchell's early football career included spells as an 18 year-old at Tottenham 14 Hotspur and Leicester City FC, before spending the 2013/14 season at Hayes and Yeading FC. After playing in Portugal the following season, he returned to the UK and signed for Hellenic League club Highmoor Ibis in September 2015 (the club renamed Reading City since this summer), where he spent three successful seasons. He joined Basingstoke Town in October this year. His game time for Basingstoke was limited, but his season had got off to a great start with Reading City, where he scored 19 goals in 11 games. His departure from the Camrose club at the end of November appeared to coincide with the appointment of new 'stoke manager, Martin Kuhl. Mitchell recently had the honour of captaining an ambassadorial FA England squad managed by Paul Fairclough, the man behind the England C team. The specially assembled FA squad travelled to the Falkland Islands in early November and Mitch scored during one of two games played there. We warmly welcome Mitch to the Row and hope he ll thoroughly enjoy his time with us. His impressive debut for us was in the excellent win at home to league leaders Taunton Town on 15th December. [KOB]

THE PAPERS SAID: TAUNTON TOWN Hartley Wintney v Taunton Town, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South, 15th December 2018 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney ground staff worked hard to get the game on and were rewarded with the Row turning in an excellent performance against the league leaders. The first half saw the Row start well and, on 21 minutes, a cross-come-shot from the left by Steven Duff drifted just past the post. The Peacocks' first notable effort did not arrive until 42 minutes. A throw on the left enabled Ryan Brett to cross and Matt Wright headed wide. The Row then had two one-on-one situations but Mitchell Parker and Mickel Platt were denied by the visiting 'keeper, Lloyd Irish. HT: HARTLEY 0 TAUNTON TOWN 0 The Peacocks were first to show in the second period when a snap shot from Brett went narrowly past the post. The Row responded and the lively Parker created a chance which saw his effort blocked. The ball rebounded to Steven Duff who shot over. Hartley continued to press and were rewarded on 59 minutes. Jack French managed to force his way through the middle. A defender slipped, enabling the Row midfielder to run on and curl a shot beyond Irish. (1-0) The Peacocks responded and a free kick in a good position from Ed Palmer went over the crossbar. If Hartley's goal was helped by the conditions, Taunton's equaliser was also fortuitous. On 62 minutes, a corner on the right from Brett looked like a safe 15 catch for Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois. However, the young 'keeper slipped and the ball trundled into the net. (1-1) Hartley pressed hard to regain the lead. On 65 minutes, good play between Dan Stewart and Mickel Platt saw the latter's shot parried by Irish. The Row continued to knock on the door and, two minutes later, Jack French set up Dan Stewart, who saw his effort blocked. But Hartley quickly regained possession and restored their lead on 67 minutes. After a good move down the left enabled Duff to send over an inch perfect cross, Mickel Platt was at the back post to head home. (2-1) Taunton finished strongly and Desbois atoned for his slip by pulling off a good save from substitute Dan Sullivan on 73 minutes. Hartley responded and on 83 minutes Duff had a fine shot saved by Irish. Then the Peacocks pushed forward and, a minute later, Sullivan's snap shot found Desbois well positioned to save. The visitors thought they had equalised for an instant but Andrew Neal's shot just grazed the post. They then created another chance and Matt Buse saw an effort saved by Desbois, again well positioned. At the other end, another effort from Duff saw Irish bring out a good save by tipping over the bar. The Row made the game safe in added time. Good interplay between Dan Stewart and Jack French set up Josh Webb, who curled in a good shot from 18 yards. (3-1) Both sides deserve enormous credit for producing a good match in very challenging conditions. [D Graham] FT: HARTLEY 3 TAUNTON TOWN 1

THE PAPERS SAID: TAUNTON TOWN HARTLEY v TAUNTON TOWN MAN OF THE MATCH: JOSH WEBB ATTENDANCE: 184 ENTERTAINMENT 4/5 HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Joe Felix, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart (c), Josh Webb, Steven Duff, Mickel Platt, Mitchell Parker, Dan Stewart, Jack French. Subs: Marc Vockins, George Frise, Harry Woodward, Steven Noakes, Jayden Englefield (on) TAUNTON TOWN: Lloyd Irish, Shane White, Lewis Hall, Ben Adelsbury, Ed Palmer, Matt Buse, Ollie Chamberlain, Ryan Brett, Matt Wright, Josh Nelmes, Andrew Neal Subs: Craig Veal, Dan Sullivan (on), Pierce Mitchell, Douglas Camilo, Keith Emmerson. After the game, David spoke with Hartley Wintney joint manager, Anthony Millerick. "Following recent matches, we planned not to get involved in a physical battle. Hence, despite the conditions, we set out to move the ball quickly and play good football. "Jack French and Josh Webb, over the past two seasons, have engendered much of the Hartley spirit and it was on show again today," Millers continued. "Following our second goal, we knew Taunton would come back at us and we had to see the game out. In the last 15 minutes we were always likely to add a third goal. "I thought the whole team played exceptionally well. The three new players settled in well and gave top class performances, and we were delighted with every aspect of today's team performance. We felt it was a good win against a very good team who are worthy league leaders." 16 WHAT THE FANS SAID: posted on the Club forum at HartleyFC.com Posted by Mick All about the finishing today, which was excellent. Such challenging conditions in which to play decent football but both teams made the effort to do this. Yes, many passes went adrift due in the main to a pitch that deteriorated rapidly due to the rain. Hartley with four new faces introduced, gave everything in terms of mileage covered and enthusiasm. Winter football is almost a different game when these conditions dictate and physicality becomes even more of a factor. Very proud of the performance from the guys - a warm welcome to those introduced for their first fixtures - enjoy every minute! :-) To the Taunton fans - thank you for contributing enormously to the afternoon and safe journey home. Posted by Vinty Well I did not expect that kind of fantastic result, but absolutely brilliant team performance it seems, with new boys fitting in well. By the time I get back I won t recognise anybody at this rate, but who cares. I am just having another rum cocktail. UP THE ROW!! Posted by Old brown b. Glad to see that Vinty is enjoying his hols but keeping an eye on Row matters. I am in reversed roles but it really was worth-while braving the wind and rain to witness what many said was the best HW performance of the season. It certainly was for me. A real team performance from front to back, with everyone putting in hard graft with no little skill, supporting one another and not moaning when mistakes were made on an increasingly tricky pitch. With new faces, I was concerned that the commitment might not

FANS TALK: TAUNTON TOWN be there; how wrong could I be. Made me, and I am sure other old 'uns, proud and honoured to be supporters. Keep it up guys. Whilst saying many thanks to those who have left the club, some with sterling service over several seasons, the management are to be congratulated on tackling the team's rather poor recent performances with incisive action. The injection of new blood - welcome to all newcomers - has transformed the team, together with a slight change of tactics. Recent training sessions certainly have the team displaying greater cohesiveness with much better movement and purposeful passing rather than too many long aimless punts. Maybe not quite a perfect display, largely due to conditions, but if we can keep up that level of performance we will be back amongst the leaders before too long. Roll on the festive fixtures. UTR. Posted by KOB Now that's the way to bounce back!! We had several new faces in who all did well, but still with injuries and illness keeping a few of our regulars out. What a difference a week or so makes - and a lot of work behind the scenes. Very well done boys. 17

THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Hugo Varley Are Hashtag United leading a new era in football? The arrival of Hashtag United in Step Six this season has potentially heralded the start of a footballing revolution. The North London club, who are in their inaugural season in Non-League, were founded by Youtube blogger Spencer Owen and boast a social media following which rivals many of the top teams around the globe. With over 400,000 subscribers on Youtube, more than European giants Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, Hashtag are promoting a unique way of following a football team. The club post regular behind the scenes clips onto social media throughout the week, while each match is documented through a stylish video, featuring highlights, footage from inside the changing rooms and interviews with players and coaches. When it comes to the footballing side of things, the team have also shown that they are anything but a group of fame hungry prima donnas. Managed by former East Thurrock boss Jay Devereux, Hashtag have spent much of the season near the top of the Thurlow Nunn Division One South table and are targeting an instant promotion this summer. There is no doubt that the club divides opinion within the footballing community and in many respects they represent a far cry from the humble traditions of Non-League. However, ultimately if Hashtag are inspiring people on the other side of the world to wake up in the middle of 23 the night and follow the Thurlow Nunn league, then we believe their presence in the pyramid provides a brilliant exposure for British Non-League football! Silly season is fast approaching. As the nights begin to rapidly draw in and the thermostat readings start to plummet, we are quickly entering a period of the campaign that is often loathed by supporters and groundsmen alike. Waterlogged and frozen pitches will likely become an ever increasing phenomenon over the next few weeks as fixtures begin to fall foul of the weather, leaving players and fans kicking their heels on Saturday afternoons. These postponements are certainly a nuisance, especially for sides who are beginning to string together a few good results and will lead to the typical fixture backlog in the spring, where players often bust a gut to play several times each week. However, it is at this time of year that we should think about the volunteers who put in countless hours of work at clubs across the entire Non-League pyramid. It is these volunteers who often help out with the thankless task of battling against the miserable weather conditions as well as the odds to try and ensure that fixtures are fulfilled as the winter months begin to bite. As always, all Non-League fans owe a huge amount of gratitude to these spirited

POOLE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY Poole FC were formed on 20th September 1890 by the merger between two local sides, Poole Rovers and Poole Hornets, who can trace their origins back to 1880, thus the club celebrated their centenary in 1980 with some high profile games against the likes of Manchester Utd, WBA and Manchester City. The new millennium saw the club continue to stride forward but further silverware remained just beyond their grasp despite becoming a force in every league they played in. Starting in the Hants Premier division, the Dolphins finished runners-up in , 5th in 01-02, 4th in 02-03, and 3rd in Re-alignment of the leagues for the season saw them join the newly formed Wessex Division 2 and gain promotion. Poole joined the top flight of the Wessex and gained a credible 8th. For the division was renamed Wessex Premier and Poole started promisingly again, but their challenge for honours faded with a series of poor results over the Christmas period. However they recovered to finished strongly in 4th. Poole reached the Trophyman League Cup quarter-finals in both and 03-04, the latter year also seeing the Dolphins reach the semi-final of the Dorset Senior Cup, losing 1-2 to Gillingham. They repeated the feat again in 06-07, losing the semi-final to Sherborne by the same margin saw them reach the Dorset Senior Cup final but the gods contrived to deny them success against Hamworthy saw them reach the semifinals of the League cup, losing to Thatcham Town over two legs, and the following season they reached the semi's again, losing out to Andover. The club moved to its current home at Tatnam Farm during this period and continual ground improvements saw 28 the erection of a stand, bar and refreshment facilities, and great improvements to the clubhouse. Poole led the way in the league for much of 07-08, slipping up early in the new year to eventually finish 4th once more. They also had a good run in the F.A. Vase, reaching the 4th round. The elusive silverware finally arrived in the 2008/09 season. Poole Town won the Wessex Premier title and were to finish as the second best team of 1,600 F.A. clubs in the whole of England, based on points per match, with a record of played 42, won 38, drawn 2, lost 2. They also won the Dorset Senior Cup (beating Dorchester 2-0 aet), in a thriller at Weymouth's Radipole Lane ground, and reached the semi finals of the League Cup. They were, however, denied promotion to step 4 due to inadequate ground grading at the Tatnam. Poole won the Wessex League Title again in by an impressive 18 points and reached the final of the League Cup, but again failed to gain promotion after the plans to build a new ground at Bracksome Rec fell through. The real coup for the 09/10 season was top goalscorer, Charlie Austin, making the successful leap from Poole to Swindon Town in the Football League Division One - now lining up for Burnley in the Championship. 2010/11. Poole reached the F.A. Vase semi finals, losing out to Whitley Bay. They also won the Wessex Premier title for the third successive season - once more by a huge 20 point margin - and at last gained promotion back to their spiritual home in the Southern league after a 15 year absence, having finally been given permission to make improvements to the ground to take advantage of the offered promotion.

POOLE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY The first season back, in , saw them make a late charge to secure second place behind champions Bideford. They beat Hungerford convincingly in the play off Semis and were minutes away from winning the Final against Gosport. But hopes of a second straight promotion were dashed by two late goals from Steve Claridge to send Gosport up to the Southern Premier saw the club win the Southern South & West Division by 14 points. Thus promotion to the then named Calor League Premier Division for was achieved. In addition they won the Dorset Senior Cup, being 4-1 winners over Wimborne Town at The County Ground, Hamworthy. And Poole finished as treble winners in by winning the Southern League Championship Trophy match, beating Central Division champions Burnham 1-0 on their own ground saw a 7th place finish but the disappointment of coming so close to an F.A. Cup 1st Round spot, losing out to Conference South side Staines Town in a replay at Poole. Off the field, by the end of March a new clubhouse, dressing room improvements, new covered standing, new seating, a new boardroom, office, tea bar and new toilets were in place saw the club in the mix for promotion to Conference South throughout the season. Unfortunately the final results saw them fall short, losing a final day match to Corby Town who won the title. However the club 29 won the Red Insure Southern League Cup for the first time, drawing 0-0 with Corby Town at Tatnam, Poole taking the trophy on the away goals rule after their 1-1 draw at Corby. They were also the winners of the Fair Play award for the Premier Division. The newly formed U21 side also won the Dorset U21 Development League, and the U18's reached the 1st Round Proper of the F.A. Youth Cup, finally losing out to Torquay Utd. The players from the previous season stayed together and saw the club go one better and achieve promotion as champions of the Southern Premier, winning the title by 9 points from 2nd place Redditch Utd, thus yet another new challenge awaited them in the National League South. Poole lost out away at Whitehawk in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round down in Brighton. But by the end of 15-16, the club could look back on 9 seasons in which they had won 5 league titles. The following saw a 5th place finish in National League South, but no play-off place due to ground grading issues, despite major ground improvements once again at Tatnam to stave off threats of demotion. Tatnam was now re-named the Black Gold Stadium. Poole Town s U18's reached the 2nd Round Proper of the FA Youth Cup, losing out to Leyton Orient saw a final day relegation, with the club dropping back into the Southern Premier after 2 seasons in the National League South.

HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC Hartley Wintney Junior Football Club U13 Falcons The U13 Falcons have had a mixed start to this season in NEHYL Division 1 following successive promotions over the past two years - in many ways mirroring the Senior Football team, without ground grading getting in the way! Missing out on winning their league in the final match of last season and missing out by a solitary point at that was a bitter pill after a superb season playing 9 a-side football. It would be fair to say that the jump up to Division 1 and the move to 11 a-side football has taken a little while to get used to. However, slowly but surely, the U13 Falcons are starting to make moves back to winning ways. We are looking forward to an additional three players joining over the Christmas break with a couple of stalwarts either hanging up their boots to give kickboxing more focus, or moving to a new club in the Premier Division. Whilst this is only kids football, it is important that the players get the opportunity to shine as individuals but, more importantly, shine as a cohesive team. Standing on the touchlines, you sometimes wonder whether the U13 Falcons realise just how good they could be The Junior Football Club is working hard at developing links with the Senior Club and we are striving to make sure that all our teams start to play the Hartley Wintney way. This is helped through senior team coaches, such as Tuffs and Millers, leading training sessions, but also with some of the players, including Dawid and Louie, helping on the training ground. The U13 Falcons are lucky to have James Townley coaching them and it would be remiss not to acknowledge the hard work James puts into training to try and get the team into fighting shape for Saturday matches. It s also appropriate to highlight that all of the NEHYL U13 teams are very lucky to have one of the very best Divisional Secretaries with Hartley Wintney s very own Suzanne McDermott-Swan in charge of the 53 teams playing at this age group. The work that volunteers put into Junior Football should not go unnoticed without these people there would be no organised Saturday football, and no structure to allow kids to play the beautiful game in a safe environment. Here s hoping that today s Senior Team match against Poole Town is a good one the match last weekend against Taunton Town was superb and an exhibition 32

FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT As we remember those who fought in the First World War in this special centenary year, the uplifting story of the revitalising effect football had on the troops at the Front is recalled here. The British Expeditionary Force were involved in three months of continuous heavy fighting after first going into action against the German army on 21 August However, with football ubiquitous in the army, the soldiers organised impromptu kickabouts in any spare moments; The Sporting Life, 23 November 1914, reporting the game being played in fields within the sounds of the guns. By December 1914 the Athletic News ran regular features on football behind the lines as the war s evolving stability allowed organised competitive sport, and footballs were increasingly available, with over 1100 balls provided by The Daily Mail and The Sporting Life by Christmas. THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE, 1914 The manoeuvring war had resulted in shortages of men and ammunition on both sides and, with inclement weather, a major offensive was unlikely before spring. In places the trenches were 30 yards apart. Shouted messages were exchanged and the adversaries realised they had common enemies in lice, rats, flooded trenches, generals and politicians. A live and let live system evolved. Some troops requested their artillery not to shell the enemy at meal times, as they did not want their meals interrupted in turn. As Christmas approached, similar emotions were raised as the foes were mainly Christian, and spontaneous truces resulted. Some two-thirds of the British line fraternised, and on Christmas Day, thousands of British and German troops congregated in No Man s Land, burying the dead, exchanging souvenirs and 34 conversing, mainly in sign language. Debris littered No Man s Land, including empty food cans, and somebody bored kicked a can... and somebody kicked it back. Kickabouts developed, with other items used as footballs including balaclavas stuffed with straw and, in a Cheshire battalion s case, Lieutenant Brockbank noted somebody produced a little rubber ball, so of course a football match started. There was no match with stretchers for goals, a proper ball and the padre making incorrect offside decisions, just many spontaneous kickabouts. ORGANISED FOOTBALL BEGINS The Sporting Life reported that over 200 teams had been established by December 1914 and a number of competitions were being played. In January -February 1915, 45 teams competed for the 1st Cavalry Brigade Cup, the trophy provided by their Brigadier- General. In July 1915, Haig famously complained that the men were falling asleep on night sentry duty because they were playing football in their rest periods. By November 1915 it was said that every section has its team. Sport was still unofficial and organised by junior officers but, as casualties mounted, it became an important part in developing esprit de corps. The Royal Engineers magazine, in January 1915, reported our new comrades are being told tales of the Army Cup, and having obtained a football, hunting the leather is the order during the times of relaxation from military duties. The revitalising effect of football on men returning from combat was noticed; General Harington rhetorically asked How many times did one see a Battalion which had come out of the line in the Ypres Salient and elsewhere, battered to pieces

FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT and sad at heart at having lost so many officers and men, hold up its head again and recover in a few hours by kicking a football? THE FOOTBALL CHARGES On 25 September 1915, the British launched an attack at Loos, the infantry walking forward in four lines in extended order, one second apart, in silence and in full kit. However, The London Irish Rifles dribbled and passed a football as they advanced, having smuggled deflated footballs into the trenches because their officers did not approve. These were hurriedly blown up as zero hour, 06:30, approached but Captain Dale saw the balls and ordered them to be discarded; apparently shooting one. Sergeant Frank Edwards, the football captain, hid his and the London Irish kicked off the southern end of the attack with the goal of capturing the German front and second lines. Edwards ball was struck by a bullet or shrapnel and caught on the German barbed wire. The London Irish achieved their objectives, and their part of the operation was one of the few successes as the Loos offense collapsed. Captain Billie Nevill, B Company commander, 8th East Surrey s, was uncertain about how his men would react in their first battle at the Somme on 1st July Perhaps influenced by the London Irish, Nevill asked permission to use footballs and this was sanctioned on condition that he and his officers really kept command of their units and didn t allow it to develop into a rush after the ball. Nevill had two footballs and as zero hour approached, one was marked The Great European Cup-Tie Final. East Surreys v Bavarians. Kick off at zero and on the other No referee. 35 At 07:27 Nevill went over the parapet; an observer remembered I saw an infantryman climb on to the parapet into No Man s Land, beckoning others to follow. As he did so he kicked off a football; a good kick, the ball rose and travelled well towards the German line. By 07:50 the battalion were in the German trenches, where both footballs were found next day. Nevill was killed. ORGANISED FOOTBALL MATURES In August 1916 General Gough ordered that football grounds should be constructed in each Brigade area and tournaments organised for resting units. The 19th Division held a three stage tournament with as many soldiers as possible playing. The first stage comprised of intra-battalion games and the second stage inter-battalion competition; the third was the cup final where the 7th Loyal North Lancashire s beat the 9th Cheshire s 4-0. Thousands of soldiers watched; football, as a spectator event, had become an institutionalised part of life in reserve. Football s positive effects were formally recognised in the General Staff Instructions for the Training of Platoons for Offensive Action of Platoon commanders were ordered to arrange games and competitions for the men and take part themselves because if he induces his platoon to be determined to produce the best football team in the battalion, he will have done a great deal to make it the best platoon in every way. By 1918, six full time engravers were kept busy in France supplying trophies and medals for competitive sport; football had become part of the way of life of the British army in the battle zone. From an article by Iain Adams
