HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. We also welcome a new First Team Shirt Sponsor. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 15 th December 2018 vs Taunton Town FC Kick Off: 3.00pm Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this EvoStik League South, Premier South Division fixture against table topping Taunton. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. Our visitors this afternoon are, like ourselves, newly promoted to the Premier Division, and as the table will tell they are currently setting the league alight. Nicknamed the Peacocks, their current record boasts 41 points from 18 games. They arrive here at the Memorial Ground in excellent form. Last week saw the Peacocks record a 7 nil win at home to Harrow Borough; before that they defeated 3rd placed Salisbury by the odd goal in 7, and prior to that Farnborough were despatched 4-1 at Cherrywood Road. We currently sit in 12th place in the league with 22 points from 18 games. As I have suggested, we are very much a Jekyll & Hyde side at the moment. Undoubtedly we are struggling for a bit of consistency and to engender the same team spirit of previous seasons. I know the management are working tirelessly to get things right and, to that end, there have been a number of comings and goings on the player front. Departing the fold are Liam Eagle and Rowan Vine. Personally I would 6 like to thank them both for their service to the Club. Liam especially has been a big part of our recent success and it will be strange not to see or hear the Nr.19 shirt. On the arrival front we have secured the services of Joe Felix and Mickel Platt, who both join from Sky Bet Championship club QPR, where they are regular members of the club's Under 23 squad. 19 year-old defender, Joe, joins the Row on loan until 7th January, whilst midfielder Mickel Platt (18) comes to Hartley on a work experience agreement until the end of January. We are also pleased to welcome back the popular Steve Duff on dual registration from Camberley Town. We thank the Krooners for their assistance in this signing. The first team return to action today for the first time since our County Cup defeat to Basingstoke, and this was preceded by a 2-1 home defeat by Chesham. Both these performances were, I understand, in stark contrast to the performance at the Camrose. Did I mention Jekyll & Hyde? Our other teams' games fell foul of the weather last week. The Reserve game at Leverstock Green was postponed and the A Team game v Four Marks, although ultimately a victim of the weather, was actually called off as the opposition could not field a side. The likelihood of this is that the A Team will be awarded the points, which would move them 3 points nearer to the title. Off the pitch we are of course fast approaching the festive season. I urge all members to support the bar over this period. This Sunday we have the Children's Christmas Party. Thanks to Sam Vallance and her band of organisers for making it happen. This is of course followed by the Christmas Raffle. If you

VS TAUNTON TOWN : 15 DEC 2018 haven't got your tickets please ask at the bar. No holds barred - with the lack of home games, the burglary and the shower refurbishment, we are stretched to the limit. Your support of these events is essential to our future. Please support your Club. We need your support now more than ever. At risk of being accused of being a 'stuck record', our success on the pitch over the past 4 seasons has outstripped our off field organisation. We are attracting more offers of assistance and it is appreciated. We need more help in all departments, from commercial assistance, ground maintenance, kit washing, catering and stewarding. If you can help in any way, please make yourself known to any committee member. Please take this request seriously. We risk losing those who are currently multi-tasking to plug the holes. We are always looking for active people who can help drive the club forward. To maintain our status we have certain improvements that we need to undertake and need help to get these works up and running. If you know anyone who may be interested in doing some construction work as part of Club Sponsorship then please ask. And finally, I have a confession to make. I have renewed my belief in Santa Claus and have mailed him to see if he can bring us a cash rich sponsor for the New Year. Hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon. Please get behind the team and, as usual, thank you for your support. #UTR Luke 7

VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon and welcome to the Memorial Ground, especially all those who have made the long journey from Taunton. Like us, Taunton enjoyed promotion from step 4 last season and have hit the ground running in the Southern Premier, currently sitting on top spot. The league is well and truly starting to take shape and there is no luck in their position right now, it is earned on merit. Likewise with the position we find ourselves in - we sit mid-table but in a very tight cluster with not much between 9th and 20th. last training session, has left us all feeling positive for what s to come, but it s important the boys make a good start. There is no doubt today s fixture will provide a very stern challenge against a good team on good form, but if we can transfer the high energy, work rate and honesty of training onto the field of play, then we have every chance. Up the Row, Millers and Dan We've undergone some changes within the last month, both in style of play and our playing squad. Each season we've been here - the team has evolved in some way, with faces coming and going, and this season is no different. All those who started the season had a good opportunity to display the characteristics required to make this campaign a success - some have flourished whilst others have floundered. We've been busy sourcing new players for some time, and this last week or so is the most active we have been for a good while. We are happy with the new additions, that have come with various footballing backgrounds, and we hope that the energy they bring in, coupled with our existing player group, will shoot us up the table. Seeing them in the training friendly at Abbey, and in the 8

HANTS CUP VS BASINGSTOKE TOWN Our thanks to Graham Merry of the Basingstoke Gaze e for allowing us to reproduce his report. Hartley Wintney v Basingstoke Town, Hampshire FA Senior Cup 3rd Round, Sponsored by Regal Building Services. Tuesday 4th Dec 2018 Basingstoke Town booked their place in the last eight of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a 3-1 victory at Hartley Wintney on Tuesday night. It was quick revenge for the Dragons, having lost a league clash seven days earlier at the Camrose by the same scoreline. The main difference in the second game was the return of Sam Smart to the Town line-up, and he proved to be a thorn in the Row's side all night. The home side, who dominated last week's encounter, never really got out of the blocks in the first 45 minutes. Smart's lightning quick pace and trickery soon started to create chances and he forced Desbois into an early save. Town then took the lead on 21 minutes, when a Sam Deadfield corner was only punched away as far as Dan Bayliss, who was able to find Ben Wright and his effort hit the net. This kick started the home side into action and Josh Webb, Hartley's best player on the night, was able to carve a chance for Ross Cook, but Bayliss made the block. The Row's Rowan Vine then tested Colm McAdden from distance, before Smart forced Desbois into a great save with his legs. Town doubled their lead on 34 minutes, as a header from Ben Wright in the centre circle released Smart down the right wing and his cross was converted by former Hartley star striker, Sam Argent. The second 45 minutes was a lot more even affair. Smart created another chance which saw Sam Deadfield's effort tipped over by Desbois. Hartley then made it 2-1 with a super team goal. The ball was worked to Steven Duff and he fed Tyron Smith on the edge of the area. The captain then found Ross Cook and he slid the ball into Romario Hart to score. However, Town took just three minutes to reply, as Smart found Argent, his shot was blocked and Wright converted the rebound. Four minutes later, Hartley nearly got a second, as Webb's free-kick to the back post saw Jack Ball head just over. Then with three minutes left, Desbois produced a great one handed save to deny Zidane Akers. [Graham Merry] Town boss, Martin Kuhl, said: "I felt we came and stood toe to toe with them in their own barn and a great win for us." Hartley's joint manager, Anthony Millerick, said: "Of course we are disappointed, but we were very negative in the first half and allowed them the chance to play. Attendance: 176 Hartley Wintney: Desbois, Kpohomouh, Paget, Ball, Noakes, Smith (c), Webb, Vine, Hart, Cook, Duff. Subs: Ciardini, Frise, French Basingstoke Town: McAdden, Stow, Gerrard, Kennedy (c), Bayliss, Hollamby, Akers, Smart, Argent, Deadfield, Wright. Subs: Philby, Orvis, Hunt 13

VS BASINGSTOKE TOWN (LEAGUE) Basingstoke Town v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Tuesday 27th November 2018 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney made the short journey to Basingstoke looking for a first win since late September '18 in the league. For Basingstoke Town this was the first local league derby since Easter 1971 when they played Thorneycrofts. Initial play was scrappy but the game came to life on 5 minutes with a goal from Hartley. Loose defensive play around the right side of the 'stoke penalty box saw Romario Hart gain possession and he scored with a low shot past Colm McAdden in the Basingstoke goal. (0-1) Basingstoke responded well and good inter-passing in midfield gave Ben Wright a chance, which he fired over from the edge of the box. A minute later the Row defence were all at sea when a long clearance found Sam Argent in the clear, with a one-on-one with Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois. The young Hartley keeper pulled off a good save from Argent's shot. In another minute play moved to the other end and a fluent move down the left ended with a Nic Ciardini shot being deflected over the bar. Chances were coming thick and fast. Just a minute later, Sam Argent made good progress down the right and his cross saw Ben Wright's effort blocked. Then it was Hartley's turn. A long free kick from Josh Webb almost found the head of Jack Ball as the ball just eluded the back post. On seventeen minutes, a crisp move by Hartley culminated in a good cross from Louie Paget which Nic Ciardini just 14 missed at the back post. Ross Cook was soon to come on for Ciardini, who picked up an injury. Basingstoke pulled level on 29 minutes. They gained possession on the left and a clever turn from Ben Wright gave himself a shooting chance. Desbois managed to parry the shot but the ball spun across the goal and Sam Deadfield managed to squeeze his shot home at the back post. (1-1) It almost got better for 'stoke a minute later when a good build up saw Jack McKnight fire in a shot which went just over the crossbar. The Row managed to get an edge in the latter part of the half but without creating a clear opening. However, on 44 minutes a good move down the left involving several players gave Rowan Vine a chance, which he fired wildly over. HT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 1 The 'stoke started the half on the front foot and some good play on the right saw a cross which enabled Ben Wright and Jack McKnight to combine to set up Sam Argent. Desbois was quickly off his line and just managed to deflect the former Row striker's effort wide. The Row started to take a firm grip on the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 58 minutes. 'Stoke had chances to clear but a miscue gave the Row the chance and Ross Cook turned and fired home. (1-2) Four minutes later, the dangerous Cook almost added another but fired wide after a good Hartley move. Basingstoke came into the game approaching the mid point of the

CLUB & PLAYER NEWS second half and, on 66 minutes, a corner from McKnight saw a header pushed over by Desbois. desire of the villagers. [D Graham] FT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 3 On 76 minutes, after being on top for a spell, the Row clinched the match with an excellent goal. Good play down the right saw a cross field ball to Louie Paget. The young defender took aim and fired in an unstoppable shot from around 25 yards. (1-3) Basingstoke finished strongly and a dangerous corner resulted in an effort from Argent which was blocked. The final whistle confirmed a deserved win for the Row after a sparkling performance. Basingstoke were good in parts - especially in midfield - but overall seemed to struggle with the BASINGSTOKE TOWN: Colm McAdden, Zidan Akers, Robert Gerrard, Charlie Kennedy, Harry Philby, Dan Baylis, Dean Stow, Jack McKnight, Sam Argent, Sam Deadfield, Ben Wright. Subs: Shane Hollamby, Mitchell Parker, Jim Orvis, Liam Hunt, Cameron Kennedy. HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Jack French, Romario Hart, Josh Webb, Rowan Vine, Nic Ciardini, Marley Ridge. Subs: Tyron Smith, Steven Duff, Steve Noakes, Ross Cook, Michael Campbell. CLUB NEWS: Hartley Wintney FC welcome new faces as we further strengthen the squad 12th December 2018 We continue to strengthen the squad approaching the Christmas period of games, at the same time seeing a number of players moving on or taking time out as the club looks to secure its place in the highly competitive Southern Premier South. Two of the most recent arrivals are Joe Felix (shown here) and Mickel Platt (shown overleaf), who both join from Sky Bet Championship club QPR, where they are regular members of the club's Under 23 squad. 19 year-old defender, Joe, joins the Row on loan for one month until 7th January, whilst midfielder Mickel (18) comes to Hartley on a work experience until the end of January. Joe Felix joined QPR from west London rivals, Fulham, in June The right-back captained the Cottagers' Under-18 side. Mickel is an attacking midfield player who joined QPR from Brentford in the summer of Other recent arrivals include the return of hugely popular left midfielder, Steven Duff, who played a big role in both the Club's recent promotions but had 15

CLUB & PLAYER NEWS stepped down at the end of last season fearing a clash with his work commitments, always a tricky balancing act for players as clubs move up through the divisions. Hartley have also announced the signing of Dan Stewart, who was most recently at Guildford City where he had an impressive goalscoring record. A versatile midfielder and striker, Dan was a former Millwall and Charlton Athletic academy player and joined Guildford from AC London in the summer of Dan made his debut for us in the game at home to Chesham United. Short-term work commitments will limit his game time in the run up to Christmas, but the Club expects to see him fully integrated into the squad from the New Year. Above: Mickel Platt, QPR U23 Leaving the Club are central defender, Liam Eagle, who has joined Bracknell Town, striker Rowan Vine and midfielder Jack Beadle. Two other players have decided to take some time out of the game due to work commitments and other factors - striker Ross Cook and defender Nick Hutchings. Liam was one of Hartley's true heroes in recent seasons, having been with the club since our days in the Combined Counties League. Hartley Wintney comanager, Anthony Millerick, says: "Liam has been a massive part of our success in recent years and we'd like to thank him for all his efforts. There have been many highlights but my personal 16 favourite was the performance, along with Jack Ball, in our play-off victory, one of the best displays I've witnessed from a centre back pairing!" Rowan Vine rejoined the Row in October after his spell with the club last season. "Rowan made a tangible contribution at a vital time to the team that eventually went on to gain promotion last season," said Millerick, "and we all thank him for his time with us and wish him well. Jack Beadle came to us from Met Police in October but recently decided to return to his former club, Ashford Town. With Ross and Nick it's more a case of them needing some time out and we may see them back at some point. Both are quality players when they're fully focused, but sometimes family and work life makes that difficult. Both have contributed massively in their time with us this far and we wish them well." The above club announcement was issued earlier this week and originally mentioned two other unnamed players. At the time of sending the programme to the printer, we are still waiting for confirmation of a further signing, but we do now have the transfer through of striker Mitchell Parker. Mitchell joins us from our near neighbours Basingstoke Town, but the 24 year-old is better known for his time with Hellenic League side Reading City, where he had a good goalscoring record, before joining stoke. He recently

CLUB & PLAYER NEWS had the honour of captaining an ambassadorial FA England squad managed by Paul Fairclough, the man behind the England C team. The specially assembled FA squad travelled to the Falkland Islands in early November and Mitch scored during one of two games he played there. We welcome Mitch to the Row and hope he ll thoroughly enjoy his time with us. Several names are missing from the squad list at the back of today s programme, but - just to be clear - this is due purely to injury and suspension. Romario Hart is serving out his 3 match ban for the red card he received against Chesham Utd. Matt Evans has a longer term injury, and Nic Ciardini and Michael Campbell are also both sidelined through injury, though we ll hopefully see them back soon. It has been a busy time with players coming and going, and so just to complete the picture the best we currently can, Luke King and Nick Sowden are currently playing elsewhere but still remain available to Millers & Turks. The same is true for several of our younger players, who are getting valuable game time out on loan. [KOB] 17

THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Edd Paul The FA Cup third round draw produced some tasty ties for the remaining Non- League clubs left in the competition against several of the country s top sides. Woking will host the Premier League s Watford, while Southport could potentially be visited by Tottenham Hotspur, should the National League North side beat Tranmere in midweek. Wrexham will also face another topflight big boy if they can progress past Welsh rivals Newport County. A home tie against 2016 champions, Leicester City, is the prize for the winner. Can our sides produce some huge shocks? We ve looked back at four occasions Non-League clubs stunned top flight opposition: Norwich City 0 Luton Town 1 January 26, 2013 Super sub Scott Rendell was the hero for Paul Buckle s men as they became the first Non-League side in 24 years to beat top-flight opposition in the FA Cup. Rendell wrote himself into the history books when he struck ten minutes from time to clinch a famous victory. Sutton 2 Coventry 1 Jan 7, 1989 Just 18 months after winning the FA Cup, First Division high-flyers Coventry were stunned by the Conference side at Gander Green Lane. Tony Rains and Matthew Hanlan struck the goals for the U s, who became instant celebrities, appearing on Terry Wogan s chat show 23 the following week. Burnley 0 Lincoln City 1- February 18, 2017 Lincoln became the first Non-League side in 103 years to reach the quarter finals of the FA Cup with a remarkable fifth round giant-killing of Premier League Burnley. The Imps had already beaten Oldham, Ipswich and Brighton before claiming their biggest scalp thanks to Sean Raggett s last-minute header at Turf Moor. Danny Cowley s side were eventually knocked out at Arsenal. Hereford 2 Newcastle 1 - February 5, 1972 The Southern League side had earned a 2-2 draw at St James' Park to force a replay back at Edgar Street. Newcastle took the lead eight minutes from time through Malcolm Macdonald, but Ronnie Radford equalised with an incredible long range strike, arguably the most famous FA Cup goal, that flew into the top corner to send the tie to extra time. Ricky George then struck the winner to see the Non-Leaguers into the fourth

TAUNTON TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman's Park, Haines Hill. Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home, on a lease agreement with the Taunton Borough Council. The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Club during the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club's fortunes, with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time. During the middle 1970s, Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up for four consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977 the club gained election to the Southern League Division One (South) and, two years later, the reorganisation of the leagues, caused by the establishing of the Alliance Premier League, saw Taunton Town transfer to the Midland Division to take advantage of the M5 motorway. 28 The club became a limited company in The new board soon decided that Southern League football was too expensive, and the club reverted to the Western League in Seven years later, the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under the management of Keith Bowker. In 1994 the team, then managed by Terry Rowles, battled through to the FA Vase final at Wembley Stadium, but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time. Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championship followed in After two seasons as runners up, three consecutive titles followed, together with the club's first ever Cup success - a 2-1 victory over Berkhamsted Town in the FA Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa's newly modernised Villa Park stadium. This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory was achieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town in a final played at Clevedon Town's Hand Stadium. Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 amid great optimism, but left after only 14 games to join Newport County. Former Hallen manager, Gary Domone, stepped into the hot seat - after a disappointing start, results began to improve and the club won its second Somerset Premier Cup by beating a strong Mangotsfield United side at Weston super Mare. Domone resigned as Manager in December 2007 and was replaced by Ian Jones, who himself resigned in April Former player, Paul West, who lifted the FA Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt the team with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by Leigh Robinson. In the previous season the club finished with a run of nine consecutive victories, culmi-

TAUNTON TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY nating with the club's third Somerset Premier Cup triumph, beating Frome Town 1-0 in the final played at Paulton Rovers FC. This was especially notable as no goals were conceded in five games. The club also won the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award in , a remarkable achievement considering the floods which affected the area, causing the ground to be under water for much of January and February. also retained the Southern League Groundsman of the Year award and were in fact voted the second best club at Step 3 & 4. Our programme also won a prestigious award, being voted the best in the Southern League and 18th nationally. The club reached the play-offs for three seasons in a row but finally, last season, it all clicked and the West Division title was clinched by a massive 19 points with only one League defeat all season. In July 2010 Tom Harris stepped down as Chairman after 29 years and was replaced by Kevin Sturmey, who also took on the roles of Chief Executive and Head Groundsman. Since then the club have made major improvements on and off the pitch, continuing to maintain the ambitions to play at a higher level. Manager Leigh Robinson and his assistant Michael Meaker left in September but the club has decided to leave things alone at the moment, with coach Rob Dray stepping up as Manager, assisted by coach Matt Villis. Off the field the club suffered a major blow in July 2011 when the clubhouse was badly damaged by a fire which was caused by an electrical fault - what remained of the clubhouse was extensively smoke damaged and the whole building had to be demolished. A mobile bar was brought in on match days, but the following year a modular building was opened despite the original builder going into administration was one of their most successful seasons in recent history, with fourth place in the League and the retention of the Somerset Premier Cup, beating Yeovil Town in the final. 32 HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC HWJFC Under 11 Eagles - today s Match Day Mascots Today's fixture against Taunton sees the continuing strong relationship between HWFC and its thriving junior section. We are excited and proud to be involved in today's fixture and we are looking forward to supporting the first team. The recent success of the senior team has not been lost on the local community, including the junior teams. During the summer, a Junior Soccer School was successfully delivered by the club, which included excellent coaching from first team players and management. A common criticism of these camps is that it is simply a way of providing mass childcare during the holidays. One of our parents felt it important to highlight that this course was incredibly useful for her son, with the whole day packed with drills and activities that were very relevant to match situations. In addition, the Eagles players who attended were motivated by the fact that internal HWFC management and players took the time to be heavily involved. Creating these links with the younger teams is something that is very common across Europe. From the Premier League to local football, these links have been slow to develop in this country. Forgetting the many financial benefits of linking a club's teams, there is also the chance for stories to develop of young players eventually playing for their local senior teams, and this is why HWFC should receive credit for all the work they are doing to create these links, including days like today. The Eagles have started the season well, winning seven of our eleven games, drawing two. We recently performed very well in the Under 11 Bowl. Playing teams both one and two leagues higher than us, we more than held our own and, as a result, we have now moved in to Division Two, a climb of three leagues in two seasons. Last season we won the League Vase. Many of our players have been together since the under 7's. Availability for both training and matches has been excellent throughout, and we also have very supportive parents. 32

HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC The players deserve great credit on a number of fronts. The development of the team over the past few seasons has been clear to see. This has come from great effort, focused training and, above all, sticking together through the good times and the bad. Disappearing if results don't go well is the easy route. The players have always chosen to go down the harder route and put things right and turn things around. Good luck to the seniors and thank you to all who have welcomed the Eagles today. Also a belated happy birthday to our greatest free-kick taker, Edson Varcoe, and the finest goalkeeper of his age group, Dylan Kettle. Paul Turrell and Paul Varcoe Hartley Wintney Junior FC was founded in known as the Hawks, the club started with just 2 teams playing friendly matches on pitches that were marked out by cones. We welcome players of all abilities - across our age groups we have a range of teams that cater for the needs of the individual player, engendering a spirit of learning through having fun. We support over 250 children across more than 20 teams ranging from under 7s to under 17/18s - and we start with children from the age of 5 joining us in weekly training sessions. We wish all our Junior Football Club Teams the very best of luck - but above all else, enjoy your football and being a part of this wonderful orange community! 34 FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT As we remember those who fought in the First World War in this special centenary year, the uplifting story of the revitalising effect football had on the troops at the Front is recalled here. The British Expeditionary Force were involved in three months of continuous heavy fighting after first going into action against the German army on 21 August However, with football ubiquitous in the army, the soldiers organised impromptu kickabouts in any spare moments; The Sporting Life, 23 November 1914, reporting the game being played in fields within the sounds of the guns. By December 1914 the Athletic News ran regular features on football behind the lines as the war s evolving stability allowed organised competitive sport, and footballs were increasingly available, with over 1100 balls provided by The Daily Mail and The Sporting Life by Christmas. THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE, 1914 The manoeuvring war had resulted in shortages of men and ammunition on both sides and, with inclement weather, a major offensive was unlikely before spring. In places the trenches were 30 yards apart. Shouted messages were exchanged and the adversaries realised they had common enemies in lice, rats, flooded trenches, generals and politicians. A live and let live system evolved. Some troops requested their artillery not to shell the enemy at meal times, as they did not want their meals interrupted in turn. As Christmas approached, similar emotions were raised as the foes were mainly Christian, and spontaneous truces resulted. Some two-thirds of the British line fraternised, and on Christmas Day, thousands of British and German troops congregated in No Man s Land, burying the dead, exchanging souvenirs and 34 conversing, mainly in sign language. Debris littered No Man s Land, including empty food cans, and somebody bored kicked a can... and somebody kicked it back. Kickabouts developed, with other items used as footballs including balaclavas stuffed with straw and, in a Cheshire battalion s case, Lieutenant Brockbank noted somebody produced a little rubber ball, so of course a football match started. There was no match with stretchers for goals, a proper ball and the padre making incorrect offside decisions, just many spontaneous kickabouts. ORGANISED FOOTBALL BEGINS The Sporting Life reported that over 200 teams had been established by December 1914 and a number of competitions were being played. In January -February 1915, 45 teams competed for the 1st Cavalry Brigade Cup, the trophy provided by their Brigadier- General. In July 1915, Haig famously complained that the men were falling asleep on night sentry duty because they were playing football in their rest periods. By November 1915 it was said that every section has its team. Sport was still unofficial and organised by junior officers but, as casualties mounted, it became an important part in developing esprit de corps. The Royal Engineers magazine, in January 1915, reported our new comrades are being told tales of the Army Cup, and having obtained a football, hunting the leather is the order during the times of relaxation from military duties. The revitalising effect of football on men returning from combat was noticed; General Harington rhetorically asked How many times did one see a Battalion which had come out of the line in the Ypres Salient and elsewhere, battered to pieces

FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT and sad at heart at having lost so many officers and men, hold up its head again and recover in a few hours by kicking a football? THE FOOTBALL CHARGES On 25 September 1915, the British launched an attack at Loos, the infantry walking forward in four lines in extended order, one second apart, in silence and in full kit. However, The London Irish Rifles dribbled and passed a football as they advanced, having smuggled deflated footballs into the trenches because their officers did not approve. These were hurriedly blown up as zero hour, 06:30, approached but Captain Dale saw the balls and ordered them to be discarded; apparently shooting one. Sergeant Frank Edwards, the football captain, hid his and the London Irish kicked off the southern end of the attack with the goal of capturing the German front and second lines. Edwards ball was struck by a bullet or shrapnel and caught on the German barbed wire. The London Irish achieved their objectives, and their part of the operation was one of the few successes as the Loos offense collapsed. Captain Billie Nevill, B Company commander, 8th East Surrey s, was uncertain about how his men would react in their first battle at the Somme on 1st July Perhaps influenced by the London Irish, Nevill asked permission to use footballs and this was sanctioned on condition that he and his officers really kept command of their units and didn t allow it to develop into a rush after the ball. Nevill had two footballs and as zero hour approached, one was marked The Great European Cup-Tie Final. East Surreys v Bavarians. Kick off at zero and on the other No referee. 35 At 07:27 Nevill went over the parapet; an observer remembered I saw an infantryman climb on to the parapet into No Man s Land, beckoning others to follow. As he did so he kicked off a football; a good kick, the ball rose and travelled well towards the German line. By 07:50 the battalion were in the German trenches, where both footballs were found next day. Nevill was killed. ORGANISED FOOTBALL MATURES In August 1916 General Gough ordered that football grounds should be constructed in each Brigade area and tournaments organised for resting units. The 19th Division held a three stage tournament with as many soldiers as possible playing. The first stage comprised of intra-battalion games and the second stage inter-battalion competition; the third was the cup final where the 7th Loyal North Lancashire s beat the 9th Cheshire s 4-0. Thousands of soldiers watched; football, as a spectator event, had become an institutionalised part of life in reserve. Football s positive effects were formally recognised in the General Staff Instructions for the Training of Platoons for Offensive Action of Platoon commanders were ordered to arrange games and competitions for the men and take part themselves because if he induces his platoon to be determined to produce the best football team in the battalion, he will have done a great deal to make it the best platoon in every way. By 1918, six full time engravers were kept busy in France supplying trophies and medals for competitive sport; football had become part of the way of life of the British army in the battle zone.
