1 THE ROW HARTLEY WINTNEY FC VS BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY FC 29TH JANUARY 2019 KICK-OFF 7.30PM The City Security Services Limited League Challenge Cup Quarter Final THE EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH PREMIER SOUTH Official Hartley Wintney FC Matchday Programme: 2

2 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

3 PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

4 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC The City Security Services Ltd League Challenge Cup 4th Round Quarter Final 29 th January 2019 vs Blackfield & Langley FC Kick Off: 7.30pm Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this City Security Services Limited League Challenge Cup 4th round tie against Blackfield & Langley. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. We also extend a warm welcome to today's match officials and hope that they too enjoy the Hartley hospitality. Our visitors play in Southern League Division One South and play at the Gang Warily Recreation Ground close to Fawley near Southampton. They are currently third in the table with 51 points from 24 games. They are two points behind table toppers Moneyfields and second placed Yate Town. Progression to this round was courtesy of a fine 3-1 victory against a Salisbury side that defeated us 4-3 the other week. Nicknamed 'the Watersiders', this is their first season at Step 4. Like us they applied for promotion after previously not availing of the opportunity 6 due to the constraints of the FA Ground Grading requirements. Promoted after securing the Sydenham's Wessex Premier League title last season, they have settled in well to life at step 4. Our fixture on Saturday against second placed Met Police saw us take the lead courtesy of a Marley Ridge goal. The lead didn't last too long as the Met were almost instantaneously level. It's always difficult 'tuning in' from foreign climes. However, from texts received (thanks Chalky) and following twitter, it would appear that the second half was nothing short of capitulation. It would seem that there is plenty of hard work ahead of the team and the management if we are to avoid being dragged into the relegation struggle (that is if we already aren't). The Reserves were also in action on Saturday, recording a 3 nil win over bottom of the table AFC Hayes. Our goal scorer on the day was the evergreen Rick Hogsden who scored a hat trick. This takes his tally to 9 goals from only 10 starts. The old adage that 'form is temporary, class is permanent' springs to mind! Elsewhere, the A Team ADFL Senior title aspirations were on hold as they were supposed to play in an ADFA Intermediate Cup Quarter Final against Fleet Spurs A (whom they defeated 9-1 the previous week). Alas, the opposition were unable to field a side and, accordingly, a semifinal place beckons. The teams left in the competition are Liphook United Res; Hartley Wintney A; Hartley Wintney Res or Alton Reserves (game to be played this Thursday) and Sandhurst Sports v Eversley & California Res or Yateley United. The final of this competition will be played at Aldershot

7 VS BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY, 29 JAN 2019 Town FC on Saturday 4th May. Hopefully a date for the diary for the Hartley faithful. Back to today's game, which promises to be a keenly contested encounter. I know there is a feeling that cup games can be an irrelevance, but the further you get in the competition, the more the prize in your eyes looms large. A trip to a final is always a bonus for the fans, and with, I believe, a cash prize for the winners, why wouldn't you give it a try? Please get behind the boys tonight, your support is always appreciated by the management and the players. Luke #UTR The Fall Guy The Club would like to pass on 'get well' wishes to our ace match reporter, David Graham, who suffered a shattered hip after a fall during an outing to a retail park on Sunday 13th Jan. Doctors decided to provide a replacement hip and the operation was successfully completed at Basingstoke's North Hants hospital. David, who is now back at home, said: "Thank you for the good wishes. I am back home but on a long road to recovery. I can just about get around on crutches. The operation was a success and now it is down to working with the physios." All the best David, from all your friends at Hartley Wintney FC. 7

8 VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Good evening and welcome all to the Memorial Ground for this interesting League Cup quarter final tie. Here s hoping there is no repeat of the downpour - or other extreme weather for that matter - that caused the original tie to be postponed late in the day. Although we haven't met in recent history (not to my knowledge) our opposition tonight have certainly been making a stir of late, and in some ways emulating our achievements in the last few years, bettering it if they win their league. With our opponents having beaten Salisbury in the last round, tonight will be another stern test and a game in which we must show the positive parts of our game, eliminating the silly errors which have cost us points over the last 5 games or so. Thank you for all those who supported at Imber Court on Saturday. Obviously it was far from the result and performance we all expected and we must see a reaction tonight. The lads were disappointed in themselves and their reaction thus far off the pitch has been positive. As a group they ve come a long way since our previous hiding, also Met Police, and we must ensure lessons are learnt. Going in all square at half time, not many of us would have predicted what would happen in the next 20 minutes but it happened and it can t happen again. There is no disgrace in losing to a top team in the league but the capitulation is unacceptable. We are looking forward to tonight, an opportunity to play away from the pressure cooker that is mid-table in a league of extremely fine margins. We need to start building momentum and stringing results together, and cups have always provided a way in which to do that. Enjoy the game today, see you in the bar afterwards. Up the Row! Millers and Turks We have a lot of belief in this young squad, so we ll look at it as a lesson, a tough lesson and one that will only make us more resilient when in a similar position. 8 Pic: Colin Rogers

13 THE PAPERS SAID : SALISBURY FC Hartley Wintney v Salisbury FC Evo-Stik South, Premier South Saturday, 19th January 2019 By Alec Hayter from the Salisbury FC website The Whites picked up a valuable three points at the end of a week which saw two consecutive defeats in cup competitions, and that in itself is a great result, but two sides battled it out on a difficult surface right to the end, with the Whites edging it by the odd goal in seven. There should be no underestimation of the importance of the result and performance, as Hartley Wintney have already, and will continue, to cause teams trouble on their sloping pitch which did not lend itself to flowing football. That Salisbury came out on top in the end was a testament to a gritty performance, although had they continued in the same way in which they played the first 15 minutes or so, the outcome may not have been quite so difficult to achieve. To get the points in difficult circumstances and bearing in mind the injury list was a great effort. The match see-sawed backwards and forwards, as after the Whites looked fairly comfortable with a 2-0 lead, it swung the home side's way when they went ahead shortly after the interval, but a great fighting comeback sent a substantial Salisbury support home happy. Lewis Benson was the first to show as he worked his way across the penalty area but then could not keep his left foot effort down. That was on eight minutes, but three minutes later he made amends by giving his side the lead. Dan Fitchett held up the ball well before back healing it into Benson's path, and the finish this time was low 13 and true into the bottom corner. It only took a couple of minutes before The Row replied, and it was Josh Webb, an influential midfielder, who tried his luck from long range, but Jake Hallett dealt comfortably with the effort. With 15 minutes gone, Benson, who gave a much improved showing than of late (has he been one of several carrying an injury?), was again involved in a move which doubled the Whites' advantage. His pass freed Jack Sparkes down the left and the Exeter loanee crossed to the far post where new boy Buowe Bosma rose high to power in a header past Sam Mason. The towering Bosma went on to have a very solid debut, and of course his debut goal could not have come at a better time. His aerial threat from set pieces may well be a telling asset. However, it took only nine minutes before the home side pulled a goal back when Webb's corner from the right side went to the far post where Jack Ball finished with a free far post header on 24 minutes. Eight minutes later the scores were level, and it was a foul committed just outside the Salisbury area which led to the equaliser. A quickly taken free kick went to Salhin Abubakar, who had looked dangerous up until then and continued to be so throughout the game, who put the ball back into the mix for Mitchell Parker to level things up from close range in the ensuing scramble. Two disappointing goals from set pieces will probably not have pleased manager Steve Claridge, but, having been pulled back level, the Whites responded when on 39 minutes a Sparkes freekick saw Darren Mullings

14 THE PAPERS SAID : SALISBURY FC put his header just wide of the target. Sparkes was again involved on 43 minutes when his corner was met by Bosma whose header fizzed just over the bar, but at the break the scoreline was probably a fair indication of the first half. Straight after the restart however, Salisbury found themselves behind, and to many, including some home supporters, the goal arose following referee Dale Wootton's decision not to penalise a tackle on Sparkes in the Hartley Wintney half. The official waved play on and the home side certainly did, sweeping to the other end where Abubakar crossed for Mickel Platt to get the Row's third. Salisbury responded well, and on 56 minutes were awarded a free kick on the touchline just inside the home half. This paid rich rewards as Benson put a skilful delivery into the goal-keeping "no man's land" creating uncertainty and before Mason could react the ball nestled in the corner for a goal which bore a remarkable resemblance to a free kick at Fleet Town earlier in the season. It also proved that it certainly was meant! At most stages it was difficult to forecast the outcome, as both sides continued to battle, but on 58 minutes the Whites could have gone ahead again when Benson got to the byeline and squared the ball back to Aaron Dawson who was very unlucky to see his attempt blocked. Eleven minutes later Fitchett, once more showing great control, laid the ball off to Tom Whelan but Mason pulled off a good save to deny him. On 71 minutes it was Hallett's turn to shine and he saved well from Abubakar who let fly from just outside the box, but it was Salisbury who had the last 14 laugh with 15 minutes remaining. Hartley Wintney were caught upfield and, seemingly out of nothing, Fitchett found himself in the clear. Showing all his experience, he remained calm and bore down on goal before slotting in what turned out to be the winner and ensure the points returned to Wiltshire. Attendance: 378 Referee: D Wootton Hartley Wintney v Basingstoke Town, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Saturday 5th January 2019 Report by David Graham Basingstoke Town gained a deserved win in the North Hampshire derby courtesy of two second half goals, but it was the Row who had the first chance on 2 minutes when a Jack French corner on the right found the head of Mickel Platt who headed narrowly wide. The Dragons quickly took a grip on the game, however, and Zidan Akers had three chances in a row to open the scoring. On 5 minutes he had an effort well saved by Adam Desbois. Two minutes later, a move down the right created a shot for Akers which was parried by

15 PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE (LEAGUE) Desbois and the follow-up from Sam Argent was blocked by Row defenders, with Nathan Smart clearing off the line. On 11 minutes, Akers tried his luck again, after being set-up by Sam Argent, but once again Desbois produced a good stop. Play evened up as the half progressed. Yet another effort was notched by Akers when, from a centre, he shot past the post. The Row mustered an overdue effort on target when Mitchell Parker's shot was saved by the well positioned Colm McAdden. On the stroke of half-time, Sam Smart made good progress down the left and his cross found Akers, who was unlucky to see his flick go just past the post. The 'stoke started the better in the second period and, on 50 minutes from a short corner on the left, a chance was created for Sam Argent, who fired narrowly wide. On 58 minutes the Row had a sight at goal when a long ball found Mitchell Parker, but the home striker shot wide. Four minutes later Basingstoke took the lead. Loose play in midfield by the Row enabled 'stoke substitute, Aaron Redford, to feed Sam Smart on the right. The winger made his way into the penalty box before unleashing a fine shot from a difficult angle which went into the net off the underside of the crossbar. (0-1) Things got better for the Dragons three minutes later, on 65 minutes. Hartley lost possession on the right of midfield. The ball was quickly moved through to Harry Pearse and he ran on and shot low past Desbois. (0-2) Hartley had a chance on 79 minutes when good play by Joe Felix down the left saw the full-back find Parker, but his effort was comfortably saved by 15 McAddan in the 'stoke goal. On 83 minutes, a quick break by Basingstoke gave the visitors a good chance, but the winger's shot was saved by Desbois. Hartley should have then scored, on 85 minutes. A spell of pressure saw Josh Webb head down to substitute Mikey Campbell, whose shot was off target from close range. The visitors had the final chance, in added time, when Oliver Harris managed to get free on a breakaway. The substitute saw his parting effort well saved by Desbois. Basingstoke held on for a deserved win. 16 THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE (CUP) Basingstoke Town v Hartley Wintney, The City Security Services Ltd League Challenge Cup Third Round. Tues 8th Jan 2019 by Graham Merry, Basingstoke Gazette SALHIN Abubakar scored twice in the space of three minutes for Hartley Wintney late on, as they booked their place in the last eight of the League Cup, beating Basingstoke Town 4-1. The first good chance fell to Aaron Redford with a sweet shot from the edge of the area, but keeper, Craig Bradshaw, was able to beat it away in the 8th minute. Two minutes later, Redford was forced out of the game due to injury, after looking very lively. The rest of the first 45 minutes belonged to Hartley, as Josh Webb pulled the strings in midfield. He also opened the scoring with a superbly taken free-kick which flew into the top corner after 20 minutes. A minute later, from the opposite side of the goal, Hartley's Tyron Smith tried his luck, but this time Colm McAdden tipped the ball over. From the corner, a goal mouth scramble saw Romario Hart's shot blocked by Shane Hollamby. The visitors did not have to wait long for a second goal as, on 25 minutes, a lovely give and go pass from Smith released Abubakar and he got to the byline and crossed for Mickel Platt to score. Three minutes later, Platt was denied by the feet of McAdden. The home side then hauled themselves back into the contest on 43 minutes. Ollie Harris found Smart, who forced a corner. From this the ball came back to Sam Deadfield and his low shot squeezed in between goalkeeper and post. Then in the final minute of the half, Hartley could have been awarded a penalty, after Hollamby's robust 16 challenge on Michael Campbell. After the break, the home side came back into the contest and on 55 minutes Deadfield played a free-kick down the left channel to Smart and his cross saw Hollamby get his head on the ball, and somehow it went wide from under the bar. As the hour mark came, it looked more likely Town would level. Rob Gerrard went on a nice run, before being upended. Sub Dean Stow's free-kick hit the wall, but he got the ball back and played it out wide for Smart and, as he wriggled through sub Reece Wylie and Abubakar, he was pushed and Town were awarded a penalty. Deadfield, in slow motion, took the spot kick and Bradshaw saved and caught the rebound from Stow. This knocked the stuffing out of the home side and, six minutes later, they were 4-1 down. Hartley's third came from a low strike from Abubakar, and then, two minutes later, a nice ball from sub Harry Woodward released Platt and his cross to the back post was put away by Abubakar for his second of the night. He so nearly completed a late hat-trick, but at full stretch just failed to get onto a ball from Platt. The reward for Hartley is a home tie against either Salisbury or Blackfield and Langley. Anthony Millerick, said: "It was a real team effort and we played with a lot of energy. Players have staked a claim to a shirt tonight." Hartley Wintney: Craig Bradshaw, Salhin Abubakar, Connor Gales, Nathan Smart (c), Jack Ball, Tyron Smith, Steven Duff, Josh Webb, Michael Campbell, Mickel Platt, Romario Hart. Subs: Harry Woodward (on), Jayden Englefield (on), Marley Ridge, Jack French, Reece Wylie (on)

23 THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Hugo Varley When a Step 5 side looks for a new manager, experience of having played in Europe s elite leagues is not usually part of the search criteria. However, Norwich United appear to have pulled off quite a coup with the appointment of new boss Cedric Anselin. The Lyonborn Frenchman boasts a formidable footballing CV, having been part of a Bordeaux side that reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1996 and contained future Ballon d Or winner Zinedine Zidane, as well as having spells with the likes of Lille and Norwich City. I was very young when I was at Bordeaux and it is strange to think that I was playing alongside someone who would go on to become one of the greatest ever players, said Anselin. While Anselin s playing career quickly propelled him to relative stardom, his decline came about as quickly as his rise. After leaving the Canaries at the age of 23, the Frenchman went on to have short stays at Ross County, Cambridge United and Lowestoft Town, as well as enduring an ill-fated period in Bolivia, where he contracted a dangerous case of malaria. As his playing days began to peter out, Anselin continued to fight his own personal demons, which have affected him throughout much of his adult life. During one particularly dark moment in 2016, the 41-year-old admits that he came close to taking his own life. A last -minute phone conversation with former Watford defender, now PFA Chairman, Clarke Carlisle, provided him with some desperately needed solace. It was the lowest moment of my life, said Anselin. I was staring at my phone and I saw Clarke s name in my contacts list. I am so lucky that he answered because I was in a really dangerous mindset at the time. I will forever be grateful for what he did for me because he put me on the right track and I got the help that I needed from people who understood what I was going through. The Planters, who suffered relegation from the Bostik North Division last season, found themselves on a barren run of form when Anselin was appointed midway through December, a slump which saw the Norfolk club slide down the Eastern Counties Premier table. However, a smash and grab win away at Wroxham and battling draws against Gorleston and Godmanchester Rovers over the festive period helped to reignite belief at Plantation Park. The new boss remarked: Coming into a side that are going through a bad patch is difficult, so my initial aim was to steady the ship and quickly put a stop to this losing run. You don t become a bad player overnight and I know that a lot of the lads here possess real quality, so it is mainly a matter of helping them to become confident on the pitch again. From a personal perspective this job is perfect for me because Norfolk is my home and I have spent many years living here now. I am settled and my two children live here, so to be managing a team in the area is 23

28 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY CLUB HISTORY Blackfield and Langley FC was founded in 1935 and are based in the village of Blackfield, near Fawley (Southampton). After playing in the war time Hythe and District League, the Club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup, losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this, with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the Hampshire League and made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/51 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/57. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/75 after finishing third, but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/82, the Hampshire League reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and, as runners up, promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight, the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league, with eleven top six finishes including three second places, and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/98. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to compete against the best 28 in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still, to this day, the envy of many teams, and the enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to this day. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/98, but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club's chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1, the Club were relegated to the new Division 2 in In 2004/05 the Club became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. The 2008/09 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of Jon Gittens. Jon continued for a second season, the Club finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager, Louis Bell, was put in charge, with the team eventually finishing in 14th position, and 16th in the subsequent 2011/12 season.

29 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY CLUB HISTORY The Club had an incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier League by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup (losing 3-0 to Hastings United), and reaching the last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/14 was the most tumultuous in recent years, with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager's role mid-way through the season, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team, who started off brightly and, despite injuries and a general failure to score goals, the team finished a credible 5th in the league and were Russell Cotes Cup winners. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town in the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runnersup in the Southampton Senior Cup (losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent), made it to the 3rd Round Qualifying of the FA Cup (losing to Maidenhead Utd), and were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup. 29 After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club surpassed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18, winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town. They also benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 leagues, gaining promotion for the first time to the Southern League. Last season also saw two appearances at St Marys in both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the record in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32, eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a midweek replay. Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup, to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them; the last success, in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure led to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.

34 THE PAPERS SAID : WALTON CASUALS Walton Casuals v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Sat 12th January 2019 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney returned to a mid table position following a hard fought win over Walton Casuals. With Adam Desbois still unfit, Hartley gave a debut to young 'keeper Sam Mason, on loan from Woking FC and a former Hartley Youth Team player. The first action of note came on six minutes and it was a goal to the Row. A strong challenge between Dan Stewart of the Row and Casuals captain, Joe Hicks, saw the ball break in favour of Hartley. Stewart and Mitchell Parker combined well and the latter created space for a shot which found the corner of the net. (0-1) Celebrations were muted as it soon became apparent that Hicks was badly injured lying on the ground. There was a four minute delay as the stricken defender was carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg. There was sympathetic applause from all round the ground. The Casuals had a chance from a free kick on 17 minutes, some 25 yards from goal. Jack Battie (aka the Walton Beckham) fired wide of goal. The home side probed, and intelligent running behind the Hartley defence gave James Ewington a chance on 22 minutes as he latched on to a long pass. The striker brought out a smart save from Sam Mason. A similar run on 34 minutes enabled the striker another chance. Ewington fired a well struck shot which Sam Mason managed to push onto the post and out for a corner. 34 In added time, Cole Brown got into a dangerous position on the left and his driven cross was well cut out by Mason. Due to a number of stoppages, the game did not flow as well as expected in the second period. On 53 minutes, a free kick on the left from Battie saw a good parry by Mason to clear the ball out of danger. The Row started to gain a foothold in midfield and, on 59 minutes, Jack French fed Salhin Abubakar who cut in and saw his shot saved by a well positioned Denzel Gerrar in the Walton goal. The home side could have pulled at least level with two very good chances within a minute of each other. On 63 minutes, Lartey Sarpong played in James Ewington for a one-on-one with Mason; the striker shot past Mason but also narrowly past the post. It was 'take two' a minute later, with Ewington running through in an identical position. The striker's shot followed the same path as the previous one. And almost immediately, on 64 minutes, the misses came back to haunt the Casuals. A fluent Row move saw the ball moved leftward, out to Abubakar. The young winger used good pace to almost reach the goal line from where he hit a strong, low cross-come-shot from a difficult angle. The Casuals 'keeper appeared to have it covered but the ball somehow squirmed from his grasp and trickled over the line just inside his near post. (0-2) The Casuals responded well and it took them just 3 minutes to reduce the deficit. A strong run down the left saw an accurate low cross find Dan Bennett, who scored from close range. (1-2)

35 THE PAPERS SAID : WALTON CASUALS On 74 minutes, Bennett had a chance following a corner but shot wide. Hartley then had a good spell following the introduction of Tyron Smith. Another good run down the left by Abubakar saw him pass to Mikey Campbell. The substitute striker fed Ty Smith, who fired just over on 80 minutes. It was almost action replay a minute later, with Jack French shooting just over following another fluent move. Into added time and a late corner from the Casuals produced a pinball scramash in front of the Hartley goal. This was relieved with a measured hoof ball out from Ty Smith. There was still time for Mikey Campbell to create a chance for himself which he fired just over the bar. A good three points for the Row. However, most thoughts go towards Joe Hicks and the hope that he will recover as soon as is possible. [D Graham] FT: WALTON CAS. 1 HARTLEY 2 Attendance: 252 MOTM: Salhin Abubakar WALTON CASUALS: Denzel Gerrar, Harry Mills, Ryheem Shechleford, Joe Hicks, Max Hustwick, Alex Kelly, Jack Battie, Lartey Sarpong, Dan Bennett, James Ewington, Cole Brown. Subs: Kyron Farrell, Reece Robins, Sonny Black, Marcus Mealing, Elgi Fejzo HARTLEY WINTNEY: Samuel Mason, Nathan Smart (c), Steven Duff, Jack Ball, Connor Gales, Josh Webb, Jack French, Marley Ridge, Mitchell Parker, Dan Stewart, Salhin Abubakar Subs: Mikey Campbell (on for Dan Stewart), Romario Hart, Tyron Smith (on for Josh Webb), Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget (on for Marley Ridge) After the game, David spoke with Anthony Millerick. "Walton Casuals are a good team with a good home record, and the 4G pitch made it a different game from what we are used to. We adapted our game plan, which proved successful." Millers continued, "The ingredient for success is Hard work, Discipline, Ability to counter attack, and of course a bit of luck. This is a very tight league and these are vital points for us." Mick later added this to the club forum: Most of my comments tonight are regarding off the field activities, however and most importantly, I wish a speedy recovery to Casuals Captain Joe Hicks, who left the proceedings very early in the match. To their credit, Casuals played attractive football and created many one on one opportunities throughout that could have secured the points. Some quality goalkeeping from Sam Mason was key, and he probably could not have dreamed of a debut performance such as that. Off field - the Casuals fans were immense for 90 minutes, with a varied repertoire of songs despite (evidently) a damaged drum stick - just loved the passion. The Club were great hosts and I look forward to their visit to Hartley shortly. Finally - the singing of the Hartley squad from the changing rooms afterwards told me, as a fan, just how much it meant to them to compete effectively at this level. Have a great weekend guys! :-) 35
