1 THE ROW HARTLEY WINTNEY FC VS BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC 5TH JANUARY 2019 KICK-OFF 3.00PM MATCH SPONSOR THE EVO-STIK LEAGUE SOUTH PREMIER SOUTH

2 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

3 PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

4 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. We also welcome a new First Team Shirt Sponsor. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 5 th January 2019 vs Basingstoke Town FC Kick Off: 3.00pm the same score; our scorer that day being Romario Hart. Ironically, the two teams will also meet each other again in the CSS League Challenge Cup at the Camrose on Tuesday night, 8th January On New Year's Day we entertained Swindon Supermarine, a team that boasted a similar record to us, separated in the table only by goal difference. Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this Evo-Stik League South, Premier South Division fixture against our near neighbours Basingstoke Town. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. Our visitors this afternoon are currently 19th in the league with 25 points from 21 games. They arrive here at the Memorial Ground having won 2, lost 3 and drawn 1 of their last 6 encounters. We are currently in 11th place in the league with 30 points from 23 games. Our form in our last six outings shows that we have won 2, lost 2 and drawn 2. A look at the league table (page 49) shows how this is an extraordinarily tight league, with a plethora of teams whose fate could be relegation come the end of the season. Today's game sees both sides looking to take the upper hand in our encounters this season. To date both sides have recorded 3-1 wins, Hartley winning at the Camrose in the League at the end of November, goal scorers for the Row that day being Paget, Hart and Cook. A week later The Stoke were victorious in the Hants Senior Cup by The game was an enjoyable if nervy encounter. We fell behind early on but by half time we were in front thanks to two fine goals from Marley Ridge and Mitchell Parker. Our opponents equalised minutes after the break via a header, and when we were reduced to 10 men after 60 minutes, things didn't look good. We did, however, continue to play well, albeit we were grateful for some profligate finishing by the visitors. Today also sees the return to action of the Reserves and the A Team. The Reserves travel to Abbey Rangers and the A Team travel to Yateley United looking to keep their unbeaten run going. Back to today's encounter here. This is a 'proper' local derby, with players on both sides having played for both clubs. I hope the game is a good one and that it is enjoyed by everyone. Please get behind the boys today, your support is always appreciated by the management and the players. #UTR Luke 6

8 VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Good afternoon to you all and welcome all those from Basingstoke travelling the short distance; in particular we welcome all the ex Hartley, some of whom played a big part in our rise up the leagues was a fine year for our club in which we achieved something not many thought was possible. Another promotion, our highest ever league placing (this season) and some fine, entertaining football on display. Like any football club, there have been a few bumps along the way, more recently a drop in form which has coincided with the birth of a new playing ethos at this football club and an overhaul in playing staff. Late November and throughout December has seen the evolution of this, and some of the football we have played is up there with the best we've seen over the last couple of seasons. Each game recently has presented a different challenge and tested us as a squad. We were good at Farnborough, a game in which we should have won by quite a margin. We were good for 40 minutes at Gosport, average for 40 minutes and very poor for 10, which cost us. Against Swindon, a good side and one in fine form, after the early set-back we were terrific and the two goals we scored were excellent. Again we suffered early set-backs in the second half but showed some real steel to see the game out and secure a point with 10 men. Basingstoke will always be a massive game for us and we hope we get another decent gate. Our first exchange at the Camrose saw us come away worthy winners, likewise Basingstoke in the reverse fixture early in December. We both know a lot about each other s squads and style of play etc., and it should make for an entertaining encounter. We have beaten some very good teams here of late, and done so playing a very good brand of football which has given everybody around the club a great sense of belief. Come 1700 today, we hope that feeling is only enhanced. Enjoy the game. Up the Row! Millers and Dan 8 Pic: Colin Rogers

13 THE PAPERS SAID : GOSPORT BOROUGH Gosport Borough v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Sat 29th Dec 2018 Report by David Graham Gosport Borough continued their recent good form with a win courtesy of the only goal scored just before half time. The first chance fell to the 'Boro on four minutes when a long clearance found Ryan Pennery in the clear and Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois, a long way from his goal. The 'Boro forward elected to shoot early but the ball went wide of the empty net. A period of scrappy play followed until the 16th minute. Mickel Platt showed good skill coming in from the left and created a good chance for himself before he was hauled down well inside the penalty area. The Row claims for a spot kick went unheeded by referee Lewis Sandoe. Three minutes later, George Barker for the 'Boro cut in from the right and saw his parting shot well saved by well positioned Desbois. On 22 minutes the Row had a good chance to take the lead when Romario Hart set Salhin Abubakar clear for a one-on-one with 'Boro 'keeper, Pat O'Flaherty. The home custodian stood tall and saved well. Three minutes later, a free kick taken by Josh Webb found Jack Ball, who saw his shot from the edge of the box blocked. Centre-back Jack Ball made an unforced error on the half hour mark, leaving Tony Lee with a clear run in on goal. Desbois came out and parried the shot, with Nathan Smart completing the clearance from under the crossbar. set up Sam Lanahan for a shot which brought out a good save from Desbois. Hartley responded, Jack French settingup Platt for an opportunity which saw the young striker fire wide. Then on 34 minutes, Gosport's George Barker had a good effort following a long free kick, bringing out another save from Adam Desbois. The Row had a great chance to go ahead on 36 minutes. The best interplay in the entire match led to Jack French setting Romario Hart free through the middle. The young striker rounded O'Flaherty, but instead of shooting into the empty net decided to check back and the chance was lost. The 'Boro finished the half strongly and on 41 minutes Lee set-up Pennery whose strong shot was beaten out by Desbois. But two minutes before the break, 'Boro went ahead after a period of intense pressure. Good play down the right resulted in a shot crashing off the crossbar. The ball was partially cleared, only for another shot to come crashing off the same spot on the crossbar. The ball went out to left and a high looper into the penalty area saw the 'Boro forwards the most determined, and George Barker shot home from close range. (1-0) HT: GOSPORT BORO 1 HARTLEY 0 It was the Row who had the first effort of the half on 53 minutes when Hart tried his luck from 25 yards, however the shot lacked power and O'Flaherty saved. A minute later, Platt set-up Jack French, who saw his effort deflected wide. But two minutes later, the Row defence was at sixes and sevens and was fortunate that Lee was unable to convert a presentable chance. The 'Boro gained the upper hand in midfield for a spell. On 31 minutes, Lee 13 On 58 minutes, Marley Ridge and Dan Stewart combined well down the left

14 THE PAPERS SAID : GOSPORT BOROUGH and the latter's strong, low shot brought out an excellent save from O'Flaherty. Hartley were trying to play out from the back and were caught out on a number of occasions by losing possession in dangerous areas. On 65 minutes, Lee took advantage and was unlucky to see his effort go just wide. The Row gave another chance a minute later and Lee's cross found substitute David Gerrard, who brought out a good save from Desbois. Yet another similar chance was provided on 67 minutes by Hartley and again Gerrard saw his effort saved by Desbois. On 78 minutes, more loose play by the Row enabled Pennery to get in a cross which found the head of Gerrard. Again Desbois pulled off a smart save. In the final ten minutes the Row finally started putting some decent moves together and should have equalised on 81 minutes. A quick free kick from Webb released Platt into the penalty box. The young striker seemed to lose his composure and blazed badly wide when it looked easier to score. Hartley pressed until the end and a Marley Ridge shot was deflected over following a fluent move. The 'Boro held on for a win they just about deserved on balance of play. However, the Row had gold plated chances to score several goals despite being some way short of their best form. They will be looking to improve their finishing on New Year's Day with the visit of Swindon Supermarine to Green Lane. FT: GOSPORT BORO 1 HARTLEY 0 Attendance: 285 Entertainment 3/5 Man of the Match: Adam Desbois 14 GOSPORT BOROUGH: Pat O'Flaherty, Harry Medway, Joe Lea, Matthew Casey, Sam Roberts, Sam Lanahan, George Barker, Charlie Davis, Tony Lee, Ryan Pennery, Patrick Suraci. "I see this as a setback after our recent performances. We were not too despondent at half time, feeling we would get chances and pull things around, and we created a number of really good chances. Credit to Gosport, who played to their strengths, being very direct. "I felt we lost our identity a bit," Millers continued. "However, we must take our chances up top when we are on top. We were also a bit shakey at the back on occasions today." Dan Turkington added, "We are a young team and learning all the time. In this league we must try and prepare mentally for each match. At times we looked a bit more lethargic than usual; possibly caused by several players being affected by a nasty bug that is doing the rounds. We look forward to trying to get back on track."

15 THE PAPERS SAID: FARNBOROUGH Farnborough v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Wednesday 26th Dec 2018 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney took a large support to Farnborough, helping 'Boro to easily their biggest home crowd of the season at 547. The spectators were rewarded with a really good local derby. A one minute's silence was held for the much respected former Farnborough Chairman, Alan Churchill, who recently passed away. Churchill was with the club when 'Boro had their famous FA Cup match at West Ham Utd. It was the Row who had the first chance in the first minute when a pass from Josh Webb sent Mickel Platt clear. The young striker took his shot early but pulled it wide of the post. The 'Boro had a scare on 5 minutes when 'keeper, Liam Beach, saw his clearance charged down by an inrushing Dan Stewart. However, the 'Boro 'keeper reacted quickest and got back to save. A minute later, a low through ball deceived the Row defence and Perry Coles was left clear. Hartley 'keeper, Adam Desbois, came out quickly and pulled off a smart save at the expense of a corner. The flag kick from Coles found the head of Aaron Oakley whose effort went wide. Play moved to the other end of the pitch and on 8 minutes good play enabled Jack French on the right to set -up Platt. The striker saw his first effort blocked, as was his follow-up. Five minutes later, French got free down the left and set-up Marley Ridge, whose strong effort from 20 yards was deflected wide. Boro's main threats came from set pieces and it was from a corner that they took the lead on 20 minutes. A 15 flag kick on the right by Kurtis Cumberbatch saw Perry Coles swivel and shoot home a good volleyed goal. (1-0) Coles was to play a prominent part in the match later on. The Row responded and on 24 minutes a long clearance set Dan Stewart free. The striker saw his parting shot well saved by Beach. Boro continued to trouble Hartley with their direct play. On 34 minutes, Marc Charles-Smith had the ball in the net after heading in a cross from Michael Fernandes. However, the striker was adjudged to have pushed his marker and the goal was chalked off. Hartley came into the game approaching half time with Stewart setting-up Platt, who saw his effort go just past the post. On the stroke of half time, a Row clearance from a set piece landed at the feet of Cumberbatch who saw his effort saved by Desbois. HT: FARNBOROUGH 1 HARTLEY 0 Steven Duff replaced Josh Webb - who was suffering a chest infection - for the second period. Almost immediately Duff made a surging run down the left and his cross just eluded the incoming forwards. Straight afterwards, 'Boro had a good chance to increase their lead after Coles sent Fernandes clear of the Hartley defence. Desbois came out, narrowed the angles and pulled off a good save. A defining moment arrived on 54 minutes. A 'Boro corner on the right appeared to be over hit, eluded everyone, and appeared to go harmlessly for a goal kick. However, referee Adrian Harris had seen a touch somewhere and awarded another corner on the left, much to the ire of the visitors. The flag kick from Coles was partly cleared but the return ball

16 THE PAPERS SAID: FARNBOROUGH into the penalty area found Cumberbatch with a good chance. The midfielder was hauled down by Jack Ball and a penalty awarded. Perry Coles stepped up but saw his well struck effort saved by Desbois at full stretch. Things were to get worse for Coles on 66 minutes when, in an off the ball incident, he punched Marley Ridge in the face. This was spotted by referee Harris who issued a straight red card. The remainder of the match saw Hartley camped around the 'Boro penalty area as they sought an equaliser. Nic Ciardini did well to set up Joe Felix on 68 minutes and the young full back saw his shot blocked. The rebound found its way to Stewart, who watched as his effort was saved by Beach. A second dual between Beach and Stewart came in the 70th minute when the Row striker worked his way through the home defence. The 'Boro keeper pulled off a smart save with a block, and Platt's follow-up was deflected wide. The pressure on the 'Boro goal became more intense and the Row had a golden chance to equalise on 79 minutes. Nic Ciardini was pushed as he attempted to reach a long free kick from Tyron Smith. Smith took the spot kick but shot wide. On 85 minutes, Ball set-up Ciardini but his effort lacked power and Beach saved. But Hartley were eventually rewarded for their efforts with a deserved equaliser on 88 minutes. A long cross from the left appeared to be over hit. Dan Stewart was not for giving it up and managed to keep the ball in play. He beat a defender and crossed for Jack Ball to head home from close range. (1-1) The Row went for the winner and in 16 added time Stewart set-up Felix, who saw his fierce drive tipped over by Beach. In the end honours even in an exciting local derby. "I thought 'Boro had a slight edge in the first half with their direct approach," said Turks. "However, even in the first half we shaded them on chances and we were the better side in the second period. 'Boro always had a threat from set pieces and Adam did well saving a one-on-one early in the second half. As well as that, his penalty save was excellent. "It would have been difficult to maintain the same levels we achieved against Taunton Town and Poole Town," Dan continued. "We showed great resilience to keep going to the end, and no one could deny that we deserved at least a draw. Finally, a big thank you to the large Hartley Wintney support today."

23 THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Matt Badcock Premier League show they have one too in 2019 and restore some lost faith. Football is a game to be enjoyed, but there are times when you really end up questioning what it s all about. The 5m golden handshake being given by the Premier League clubs to outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore was one of those moments. It also brings home what the lower levels of football in this country are up against when cash of that amount is handed out at the drop of the hat. Yes, the Premier League does give money down to Non- League football, and without it many clubs wouldn t have been able to improve their facilities. But imagine how much more could be achieved and the good it could do for English football. Part of the problem is the disconnect between the top and the bottom. Non- League football couldn t seem any further away from the riches enjoyed at the elite level. But, more crucially, the top clubs just don t appear to give a hoot. And that s what this payment to Scudamore says. Personally, no problem with players being well-paid. They are in an entertainment industry, pulling in the pound notes and they deserve to get their slice in what is a short career. I also don t ever buy the argument that a player should simply hand over some of his wages just because a club has overspent and hasn t paid their debts. That s on them, not Alexis Sanchez, for example. It s just tough to swallow a sizable hand-out when so many clubs are doing it the right way but still having to beg, borrow and steal to get by. When the news broke, I had a rare rant in my NLP column because I feel it s an insult to all those who put in the hard work throughout the season at our levels. It was from the heart. Let s hope the 23 WREXHAM fans are understandably upset about manager Sam Ricketts leaving to take over at League One side Shrewsbury. The former Bolton and Hull City defender only took over in the summer but quickly showed he s a boss with a bright future as he led the Welsh club to the top of the National League. But look at the bigger picture and it will hopefully be a boost to Non-League football if he can do well. Managers at this level rarely get a chance to step up. Opportunities are much more available to players. There are so many top bosses outside the Football League it would be great if more get a shot higher up the ladder. DID you catch the amazing goal-line defending by Dulwich Hamlet last weekend? Wingate & Finchley couldn t believe they hadn t scored from a goalmouth scramble in their FA Trophy tie. Hamlet keeper, Preston Edwards, and some incredible desire from Ibrahim Kargbo, kept the ball out as the Wingate peppered their goal Kargbo finally throwing his head at the feet of an attacker to finally get the ball clear. The clip quickly racked up the viewing figures to well over two million. It shows the power of social media. Hopefully it might even lead to some new fans turning up at their local club over the coming weeks. It s the sort of commitment to defending we can all

28 BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY There is little doubt that football was being played in the Basingstoke area in the early 1890's, but it wasn't until 1896 that a Basingstoke Town F.C. club was formed from Aldworth United and Basingstoke Albion. In 1901 the club entered the Hampshire League and in 1909 the local North Hants Ironworks team merged with the Town club. This merger produced dividends, with title success in 1911/12 and 1919/20. After playing at a couple of grounds in the area, the club moved to its present site in Initially the club had a 15- year lease given by 1st Viscount Camrose, but on his death in 1953 his son, 2nd Viscount Camrose increased the lease to The sixties were the beginning of a more successful period for the Camrose club, finishing as runners up in 1965/66 and the following season. It was third time lucky in 1967/68 when the Hampshire League title was won. After being runners up again in 1968/69, they won back to back titles in 1969/70 and 1970/71. The latter came without a league defeat and the Hampshire Senior Cup was won for the first time. The club joined the Southern League in 1971/72 and finished 8th in its first season. The highlight was reaching the F.A. Cup 1st Round for the first time ever. A then record attendance of 3,400 saw Northampton Town win 5-1 at the Camrose. In 1984/85 the club won the Southern League Southern Division, without losing a home game. After a couple of years in the Premier Division, the club had the chance to move across to the 28 Isthmian League. It was a disastrous first season as the club were relegated. But the following year promotion was achieved with a last day victory at Southwick and, for the first time, the club reached the Trophy 1st round, losing at Kettering Town after a replay. The following year saw more cup success as the club reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup for the first time. A crowd of over 4,000 saw Torquay United win 3-2. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won with a record breaking 8-0 thrashing of Lymington. The next few seasons were a struggle, and in 1993/94 the club suffered relegation. After two years in Division One, the club had only another Senior Cup success to show for its efforts. But in 1996/97, promotion was achieved as runners up, and another appearance in the Senior Cup final saw a second successive 2-0 win over Waterlooville. The 1997/98 season became the club's most memorable to date, with F.A. Cup success over Wycombe Wanderers. After a draw at Adams Park, 2-2, the team won the replay on penalties after another thrilling 2-2 draw at the Camrose. A new record attendance of 5,085 saw this remarkable result, as in both games Stoke had trailed at every occasion. In the 2nd Round it was an away trip to Northampton Town and, despite being under pressure for much of the game, the club earned a replay with a late equalizer. The replay saw Sky

29 BASINGSTOKE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY Sports beam the game live, and another crowd of nearly 5,000 saw Stoke this time go out on penalties on a night that has been regarded as the coldest ever in Basingstoke! League form was difficult at this time and it needed a run of just four defeats in twenty-one games to ensure the club finished in the top half. The club played sixty-nine games that season, the last match being the Full Members Cup Final against Hendon, who deservedly won 4-1 on the night. 1998/99 saw the club reach the 1st round of the F.A. Cup again, losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth after a memorable 4th qualifying round win at Dover Athletic. The next few years saw the club consolidating its position in the Ryman Premier League before becoming members of the newly formed Nationwide Conference South in season 2004/05. During season 2006/07 the club had a marvellous F.A Cup run, creating club history when beating Chesterfield 0-1 on their own ground in the First Round Proper. Unfortunately the run ended in the Second Round Proper, losing narrowly to near neighbours Aldershot Town in a replay at the Camrose. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won in season 2007/2008, beating local rivals Farnborough in the final at Bournemouth, and again in the 2013/2014 season, beating Havant and Waterlooville at Fratton Park, Portsmouth. The club suffered relegation to the Southern League at the end of the 2015/2016 season. The Hampshire Senior Cup was won again in season 2016/2017, beating AFC Bournemouth on penalties after the game finished all square in normal time. The last couple of seasons have seen comfortable mid table finishes. A bit of fun for visiting supporters; name the ex-basingstoke Town players here. Good luck, no prizes but get them all right and you can consider yourself a true stoke FC historian! Answers can be found on page 39 below the TV listing. 29

34 FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT As we remember those who fought in the First World War in this special centenary year, the uplifting story of the revitalising effect football had on the troops at the Front is recalled here. The British Expeditionary Force were involved in three months of continuous heavy fighting after first going into action against the German army on 21 August However, with football ubiquitous in the army, the soldiers organised impromptu kickabouts in any spare moments; The Sporting Life, 23 November 1914, reporting the game being played in fields within the sounds of the guns. By December 1914 the Athletic News ran regular features on football behind the lines as the war s evolving stability allowed organised competitive sport, and footballs were increasingly available, with over 1100 balls provided by The Daily Mail and The Sporting Life by Christmas. THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE, 1914 The manoeuvring war had resulted in shortages of men and ammunition on both sides and, with inclement weather, a major offensive was unlikely before spring. In places the trenches were 30 yards apart. Shouted messages were exchanged and the adversaries realised they had common enemies in lice, rats, flooded trenches, generals and politicians. A live and let live system evolved. Some troops requested their artillery not to shell the enemy at meal times, as they did not want their meals interrupted in turn. As Christmas approached, similar emotions were raised as the foes were mainly Christian, and spontaneous truces resulted. Some two-thirds of the British line fraternised, and on Christmas Day, thousands of British and German troops congregated in No Man s Land, burying the dead, exchanging souvenirs and 34 conversing, mainly in sign language. Debris littered No Man s Land, including empty food cans, and somebody bored kicked a can... and somebody kicked it back. Kickabouts developed, with other items used as footballs including balaclavas stuffed with straw and, in a Cheshire battalion s case, Lieutenant Brockbank noted somebody produced a little rubber ball, so of course a football match started. There was no match with stretchers for goals, a proper ball and the padre making incorrect offside decisions, just many spontaneous kickabouts. ORGANISED FOOTBALL BEGINS The Sporting Life reported that over 200 teams had been established by December 1914 and a number of competitions were being played. In January -February 1915, 45 teams competed for the 1st Cavalry Brigade Cup, the trophy provided by their Brigadier- General. In July 1915, Haig famously complained that the men were falling asleep on night sentry duty because they were playing football in their rest periods. By November 1915 it was said that every section has its team. Sport was still unofficial and organised by junior officers but, as casualties mounted, it became an important part in developing esprit de corps. The Royal Engineers magazine, in January 1915, reported our new comrades are being told tales of the Army Cup, and having obtained a football, hunting the leather is the order during the times of relaxation from military duties. The revitalising effect of football on men returning from combat was noticed; General Harington rhetorically asked How many times did one see a Battalion which had come out of the line in the Ypres Salient and elsewhere, battered to pieces

35 FOOTBALL AT THE FRONT and sad at heart at having lost so many officers and men, hold up its head again and recover in a few hours by kicking a football? THE FOOTBALL CHARGES On 25 September 1915, the British launched an attack at Loos, the infantry walking forward in four lines in extended order, one second apart, in silence and in full kit. However, The London Irish Rifles dribbled and passed a football as they advanced, having smuggled deflated footballs into the trenches because their officers did not approve. These were hurriedly blown up as zero hour, 06:30, approached but Captain Dale saw the balls and ordered them to be discarded; apparently shooting one. Sergeant Frank Edwards, the football captain, hid his and the London Irish kicked off the southern end of the attack with the goal of capturing the German front and second lines. Edwards ball was struck by a bullet or shrapnel and caught on the German barbed wire. The London Irish achieved their objectives, and their part of the operation was one of the few successes as the Loos offense collapsed. Captain Billie Nevill, B Company commander, 8th East Surrey s, was uncertain about how his men would react in their first battle at the Somme on 1st July Perhaps influenced by the London Irish, Nevill asked permission to use footballs and this was sanctioned on condition that he and his officers really kept command of their units and didn t allow it to develop into a rush after the ball. Nevill had two footballs and as zero hour approached, one was marked The Great European Cup-Tie Final. East Surreys v Bavarians. Kick off at zero and on the other No referee. 35 At 07:27 Nevill went over the parapet; an observer remembered I saw an infantryman climb on to the parapet into No Man s Land, beckoning others to follow. As he did so he kicked off a football; a good kick, the ball rose and travelled well towards the German line. By 07:50 the battalion were in the German trenches, where both footballs were found next day. Nevill was killed. ORGANISED FOOTBALL MATURES In August 1916 General Gough ordered that football grounds should be constructed in each Brigade area and tournaments organised for resting units. The 19th Division held a three stage tournament with as many soldiers as possible playing. The first stage comprised of intra-battalion games and the second stage inter-battalion competition; the third was the cup final where the 7th Loyal North Lancashire s beat the 9th Cheshire s 4-0. Thousands of soldiers watched; football, as a spectator event, had become an institutionalised part of life in reserve. Football s positive effects were formally recognised in the General Staff Instructions for the Training of Platoons for Offensive Action of Platoon commanders were ordered to arrange games and competitions for the men and take part themselves because if he induces his platoon to be determined to produce the best football team in the battalion, he will have done a great deal to make it the best platoon in every way. By 1918, six full time engravers were kept busy in France supplying trophies and medals for competitive sport; football had become part of the way of life of the British army in the battle zone. From an article by Iain Adams
