TODAY WE CELEBRATE By Toe Punt Congratulations to Dromana star Rikki Johnston on winning the league medal on Monday night. This capped off a wonderful year for the running defender, who was also named vice captain of the Team of the Year. Tigers coach Gavin Artico was named Coach of the Year while Crib Point champion Luke Herrington was given the role of captain. Well done to all of the players who were selected in the Team of the Year. There were 11 selectors of the team, including 10 coaches. There were 50 individual players who were given the nod. Whilst teams of the year always create robust conversation, the pure weight of votes saw the 22 selected automatically. GRAND FINAL SHOWDOWN Today, we celebrate the 2012 Nepean Division season with the grand final Dromana v Sorrento. While Dromana has beaten the Sharks on its past two occasions, Sorrento still starts favourites to win the title with most pundits. The common thread is it s hard to beat Sorrento three times in the one season. All good things must come to an end and I believe that today might be the day for the Sharks. This is Sorrento s fifth grand final on the trot what a sensational performance! What a team, what a football club! The Sharks dynasty was launched against Dromana in 2008, easily winning that grand final, before it was beaten in the big dance the year after against Bombers. It was then back-to-back against Somerville and Hastings. Today, the Sharks look for three premierships in a row. They are up against it today. They have lost three of their past five matches, two of which were against the Tigers, and there is a cloud over some of their stars. Nepean Preview Doug Scott played his first senior game last weekend and the match was extremely physical. He must be extremely sore coming in to this one. Leigh Poholke one grabbed at everything last week that s because his hand is broken. Dalton Sanderson allegedly cracked a bone in his hand last week in the preliminary final. We ve seen plenty of teams win flags when they stare adversity in the face the Sharks have done it on plenty of occasions. We won t know the make-up of the Dromana team until they run out this afternoon. The players were informed on Tuesday of who would be taking part today. Adam Hunter (spleen), Ryan Worn (suspension) and Terry Wheeler (broken hand) were all up for selection. There were no injury concerns. This means 25 players into a 22-man squad. There s got to be some devastation. Do the Tigers roll the dice on Hunter? Do they play Worn, who is in their best 22 but hasn t played a match ADVANCE TROPHIES For all your: Trophies Medallions Engraving Name Bars Small Signs Pewter Award Plaques Silverware T-Shirts Badges Promotional Products Pennants CLUB DISCOUNTS & FREE ENGRAVING 74 Bardia Avenue, Seaford Ph: ( ) MPNFL Since

Nepean Preview in over a month. Terry Wheeler hasn t played in at least six weeks and who knows whether he can clench his fist and take a hit on his hand? It certainly adds intrigue as to who s warming-up on the ground at three quarter time in the reserves grand final. MATCH-UPS What we can guarantee is that there are going to be some sensational match-ups. These two sides have been the best performed this season and to be frank, it was the grand final that we all wanted to see. Jay Neratzolglou and Ben Schwarze should be a cracker, Rikki Johnson and Brent Kenyon, Seamus Thompson and Scott Cameron, Stevey Gaertner and Guy Stringer, Jay Hutchison and Chris Bagot, Ryan Slocombe and Leigh Treeby, Paul Minchington and Daniel Grant, Anthony Bruhn and Troy Schwarze, Daniel Lee and Leigh Poholke, Kieran Voelkl and Trevor Mattison and it goes on and on. X-FACTOR Tyrren Head is certainly the X-Factor for Sorrento. As good as he is, we just need to see him lower his eyes going forward. Gaertner is the X-Factor for Dromana. Stevey simply must take advantage of the open spaces of Frankston Park and take players on. The key is for him to kick the ball long into dangerous areas, rather than handballing to stationary players. He tore the game apart in the second semi final. Don t be surprised to see Troy Schwarze go to him at some stages. He ll need more than two opponents for the afternoon. WHERE IT CAN BE WON Sorrento looked one paced in the second semi final and even in the preliminary final. I would like to see an injection of pace added for Dromana, who don t stop running. The key for the Sharks is giving their forwards enough opportunity. Sorrento has a star-studded forward line (Ben Schwarze, Moore/Treeby, Poholke, Sanderson, Kenyon). Dromana s backline you would call workmanlike. Take Neratzaglou and Johnston out of that back six and it lacks star quality. Although the likes of Jarred Wood, Aaron Coyle, Shaun Clarke, Tommy Wright and Michael and Jarred Hunter could argue that they have been exceptional all season and highly underrated as a back six. For mine, however, Sorrento could expose them in that part of the ground. Dromana s strength is its midfield rotations, blend of grunt and pace in the engine room and its hard working forwards. Slocombe, Minchington, Banks, McMurray, Lawrence, Dennis and Hogan are all wonderful inside and outside players, while the likes of Michael and Jarryd Hunter also spend time in there. Adam Hunter will too if he plays. Hutchison, Bruhn and Savage are all lead-up forwards and allow plenty of space behind them. When they are prepared to work up the ground, Dromana looks the goods. It also means that this spreads Sorrento s back six, which they aren t comfortable about. The Tigers need to ensure that one goal needs to become two, three and four. 4 WHO WINS? Dromana wins! Whilst I appreciate and respect the fact that it s hard to beat Sorrento three times in one year, in the past five seasons, it s been tough to beat them once! Dromana has been able to do it twice this season the past two occasions in fact. The Tigers had plenty in reserve when they won by six goals in the home and away and they played ordinary football for the most part and managed a draw in the second semi. I think Dromana has some upside to its finals performances. The only thing standing in their way is being overawed by the occasion. Sorrento needs to blow the Tigers away before half time to be any chance to win three in a row. If the Tigers are close at the half way mark, get your money on them to run out the game a whole lot better. Dromana by 22 points. RESERVES In the Reserves, it s hard not to get caught-up in the hype surrounding the Tim McDonald-coached Somerville. The Eagles have steam rolled every team in the finals so far and they come up against the best side in the competition in 2012, the Travis Reints coached Frankston Bombers. There is just one player standing in the way of Frankston tasting some well deserved success after losing their past four grand finals Ben Crowe. Crowe is a star and as we know, is far too good for reserves football. He has proved that with his performances, kicking bags of goals playing as a midfielder/ forward. Reints needs to play on him. The second option is Dean Wagner. Both experienced campaigners. In terms of talent, there s not a lot separating them. Luke Forsyth and Todd Farrelly are obviously great names, while Stephen Crowe, Guy Austin and Nick Brown have played a lot of footy. Ryan Lia, Mick Wells, Leigh Bidey, Wagner, Reints and Justin Clapp are very good players for the Bombers. Nepean Preview Then throw in the talent of Justin Kiss, Daniel Bence and Shannon Campbell. The Eagles may have been belting sides so far, however, it will be a much tougher contest today. UNDER 18 s This will be a wonderful grand final. Red Hill and Somerville have been the best two sides this season and deserve to be playing off. The Hillmen beat the Eagles in the second semi and they are expected to be stronger again today in terms of personnel. A lot of talk surrounds the likes of Jake Mold, Jarryd Douglas, Jayden Pain and Michael Mock, however, the likes of McEnroe, Toy, Rogers, Neal and Davis are also coming into the big one with great form and confidence. Somerville would have benefitted from last week s strong victory. They just need to keep it together this morning. The Eagles fell apart and couldn t manage the pressure the last time they met Red Hill. Finals are all about pressure and if they can t sustain it, they ll fall apart again. Daniel Marshall, Adam A Vard, Troy Jacobson, Sam Adams, Burton, Luke Rowe, Day and Mitch Fayle are just some of the many stars that the Eagles have running around they are star studded, no doubt. Attitude, commitment and patience are the only things that stand in Somerville s way. A fantastic contest to kick start Nepean Division Grand Final day. MPNFL Since

Southern Umpires A Grand Finale Part 1: Congratulations to all the teams who have made the Nepean Grand Finals. All the hard work that you have undertaken is at the point of ultimate reward. It is now up to you to perform on the day. For our umpires it is pretty much the same. Being awarded a Grand Final appointment is the pinnacle of any umpire s season but your reward will come when you walk off the ground knowing that you have fulfilled your coaches expectations and proved their confidence in selecting you was justified. Throughout the year the theme from the Umpiring Department has been teamwork and communication and the consistent message has been threefold: Let em play footy Don t influence the result Ensure the best team wins the game (i.e. the team that plays the ball not the man) We have maintained and invested further into our umpiring department with the introduction of 2 new umpiring observers which has paid huge dividends. Through the added training, development and feedback our umpires have performed with credit throughout the season and finals. The team are rightfully proud of the development the younger umpires and the general improvement of the group as a whole with more even performances across the board. The VSHL-SUA is the only umpiring body anywhere that is consistently supplying field, boundary and goal umpires for its entire competition games and we have also met all our commitments for the Colts. The MPNFL clubs and administration have all embraced the three umpire system. Not only has it enabled more opportunities within the VSHL-SUA group but it has improved the flow of the game. This is evident in the low free kick count. While the MPNFL has had three umpires in Finals for a few years now, no other League has consistently had three field umpires at 12 out of 15 games every week. MPNFL Since

Southern Umpires Peter Marshall believes that our style of umpiring has resulted in a free flowing and less clinical approach. As a result the relationship with clubs and the MPNFL has grown closer and there is an increased willingness to work together. We can continue to build on our great working relationship with Ian Benson, Tony Vagg and the MPNFL Board to become the place you want to be when it comes to umpiring football in the VCFL. On behalf of the Board, I wish every umpire all the best for your Grand Final appointment and do us proud when officiating in your matches. We look forward to celebrating our year in umpiring with all umpires and their families at the Presentation Night to be held at the Frankston RSL. MPNFL has turned Mobile.. 10 Sorrento Football Club President s Message Dromana Football Club President s Message President s View We again had all three teams in the finals this year, a great result for the Club overall, particularly the U18 s who progressed from fifth spot to reach the Preliminary Final. The reserves, which had been struck with several injuries in the latter stages of the season battled manfully in the elimination final against what was practically a senior Somerville team. Congratulations to the coach s, players and team officials. A particular thank you must go to our volunteers, sponsors, support groups, White Pointers and Shark Fins, members and committee. Your support is invaluable and we could not run our Club without you. This is the fifth straight year our seniors have reached the grand final but as we know that is only half the job done. And this time we definitely go into the game as underdogs, having lost our last two games to Dromana. Team selection will again be particularly difficult and is always an unenviable task at finals time. Congratulations to those selected, but to those who missed out our thoughts are with you, and while you may not appreciate it now, from the Club s perspective you are as important to us as anyone else. To those players who take to the field you owe it not just to yourselves but to all those who contributed throughout the year to make the most of this opportunity. Use it to leave your mark on the history of the Sorrento Football Club and be the first to win three consecutive premierships. The Sorrento Football Club was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic news that one of our own John McCarthy died in tragic circumstances earlier in the week. John s father Shane is a former President of the SFC. Our hearts go out to Shane, Cathy and the rest of the family. Garry Woodhams - President Dromana Football Club Well here we are Grand Final day 2012, is today the day?, it has been 41 years since anyone has held the Premiership Cup aloft for Dromana, maybe today we break the drought. It has been a great journey that started back in November last year with pre season, the commitment of the Coaching Staff lead by Gavin Artico and the players has been exemplary and as a result of that hard work and dedication we find ourselves playing in the Grand Final against and old foe in Sorrento. Apart from the Coaching staff we have a large number of people just as dedicated, they are our Trainers, Volunteers, supporters and our very loyal Sponsors, they have also been major contributors in the club reaching this great moment, and all going well we will all be celebrating after the Final Siren today. I would also like to thank two other groups of people that I feel at times do not receive enough recognition and the first is the Board of Management. I am currently in my 10th year at the Club, however there are names such as Hunter, Stelling, Matthews, Ferguson, Spaull, Rogers and Minchington that have anywhere from 15 to 50 years service to local Football. The other group are the Wives, Girlfriends and Partners, they allow us to be a part of this great Club and to me they deserve recognition and hopefully for them today they too will have the opportunity to share in the celebration. To the boys playing today, please know that we are proud of you and I am sure you will all do us proud. Good Luck. Mark Crawshaw - President Dromana Football Club MPNFL Since

Coach s Say Sorrento Football Club Coach s Message Firstly congratulations to Gav and the Dromana Football Club on a terrific season and we look forward to the contest today. When a new season starts with 12 teams all driving and striving to play finals and ultimately get to the final game of the year there is no doubt as a playing group and club we are immensely proud to have made it to the decider. And to have had all three sides compete in finals with the reserves putting up a brave showing and the unders likewise riding from fifth spot to a preliminary final is very pleasing. A big thank you to Bish and Scotty for nurturing the local talent, the future looks bright. On behalf of the playing group a big thank you to all of the tireless helpers that make the club what it is. Garry and the committee are amazing and the weekly contributors including Gossie, Kev, Nicko, Morgo, Maxie, Bill, Stu, Baz, Sharon, John & Bette, Spook & Snoz week in week out and ask for nothing in return but our best efforts. Troy Schwarze - Sorrento Football Club Dromana Football Club Coach s Message So after a long pre season, 2 x practice matches, 16 regular season games and 2 finals it all comes down to this Dromana vs Sorrento in the Grand Final. Firstly to our hard working committee & big band of volunteers I d like to thank you for the power of work you ve done which has enabled us to reach this day. 13 Notes Somerville The club wishes a speedy recovery to Greg Leo Hodgins after his latest setback. Best wishes Leo from all at Somerville!!! The club will be open from 4pm today & we look forward to seeing everyone back at the social club to hopefully celebrate a couple of victories. To all involved, especially players, please behave responsibly over the next couple of days as you are still representing the Somerville Football Club. Congratulations to all clubs involved today as we all know how difficult it is to get to a Grand Final let alone win one!!! It s been a long and challenging year for our club, but today we have the chance to make it all worthwhile. Full credit to Aiden Bock, Tim McDonald, Leigh Stewart and all the players that have been a part of making our u/18s and Reserves make it into the Grand Final. To all those who have seen fit to comment on our Reserves side perhaps you should consider the following before you make any comments: Our senior side has had 48 players represent the club in 2012 due to development of young players, injuries, unavailability, etc. As with any other club, some have been demoted to the reserves at times or missed out on selection at the start of the season due to performance. From last week s preliminary final side 6 played in last year s U18 premiership side, 5 players have not played a senior game during the year & a further 5 players missed a large part of the year due to injury, work, study, etc. F TY So if that means fielding a senior side then I don t know much about this football caper! Full credit again to all our players, coaching staff and committee in getting us to where we are today. You can bet they re going to come out all guns blazing and we hope to see Frankston park swamped with blue and gold! Good luck boys! Red Hill One more game, one more win is needed for the youngins to get Red Hills first under 18s Grand Final win. The boys earned themselves a week off by playing an impressive game of footy against the undefeated Somerville team two weeks ago. They were behind by 10 points after 1st qtr but lifted their game and kicked 4goals to 1 in the 2nd qtr, and they never looked back, Kicking 8 goals to 4 in the last half. The boys used their run and carry to help set up the win. But the we all know they will have to play even better this week as the Sommie boys will come fired up. It s hard to find the best players of the game but players who stood out where bushy, mocky, Youngy and Benny Rodgers. Good Luck today boys. After today s match the clubrooms will be open for all to return for a meal and a few drinks. Let s hope they are winners drinks. Speak to Roger or Owen for further details. Presentation Night: Friday September 21st at Dromana Hotel at 7pm. Book your ticket(s) with Chris Rye. Condolences to the McCarthy family and Sorrento Football Club.
