3 CHAIRMANS WELCOME Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Nairn County to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League tie. Unless you have been on the moon recently then you will be aware of the changes that have taken place at Nairn County and while it will undoubtedly take time I have no doubt they will remain the strong club they have always been. Sometimes change is good and in Ronnie Sharp they have a manger who has done well at Nairn before and obviously has the club at heart. We know from experience that is a good thing. Likewise, with Donald as chairman they have a club stalwart who will want nothing other than the best for his club. Like the Mackintosh family before him, he is a Nairn County supporter first and foremost. As we all are at this level. We wish all the new regime at Station Park the very best of luck for the future. We have had a decent start to the season with three victories in our opening three games. Ok, Wednesday night was won on penalties but it was a terrific performance to watch and nobody would have argued had we won the tie in 90 minutes. Also satisfying is the fact we have given four players their first team debuts. Liam Norris, Jack Simpson, Marc Summers at Fort William and Sean Douglas at Formartine Utd all coming on as substitutes and all contributing well to the team. This is one of the most satisfying parts of the job, seeing youngsters breaking into the team and hopefully being the stars of the future. It is up to these lads, like many others before them, to continue with the good progress and get into the team on a regular basis. That hard work can only be done by them. More disappointing however is the loss of Courtney Cooper to Keith. He is a great lad and a very good player but unfortunately his work over the past season or so has hampered his appearances. This is something clubs at our level have to live with sometimes but that is football and we wish Courtney all the best at his new club. I wouldn t rule out seeing him the black and white jersey sometime again in the future. Back to the game today and we know just how difficult a task we have in front of as. With a new manager and team of players all desperate to get off to a good start is something we will need to match if we are to take anything from the game. Hopefully we can capitalise on our good start and keep the three points here at Bellslea. 4 MANAGER S NOTES A good start to the League campaign with wins over Strathspey Thistle and Fort William? What has impresses you most in those games? I think the fact that we have kept two clean sheets is the main positive to take out of the first two games. As a team we have looked solid and opposing teams have created very little against us. Our shape defensively has looked good so if we continue to concede few goals, then we know we have the firepower to score so that will stand us in good stead going forward. We could have been better in possession at times but I think the most important thing is to get off to a good start and thankfully we have done that. You do not want to fall behind the leading pack too early so it s pleasing to get the points on the board and start off with two wins. Our pre-season did not go fully to plan but we have managed to move on from that and start the season well which is what we would have wanted. You followed that up with a fantastic win on penalties against Formartine United in the Aberdeenshire Cup. What were your thoughts on the game? Firstly, I thought it was a fantastic game for the spectators. 6 goals with plenty more chances, a penalty shoot out. All in all a great highland league cup tie. I do not think anyone who was at the game would argue that we deserved to go through. We were the better team on the night and in the first half especially, we played some of the best football I have ever seen in a Broch strip. For a large spell we managed to out play one of the favourites for the league and that pleased me more than anything. We started the game poorly and credit to Formartine as they came out of the traps well and got their goal after 6 minutes. After that we upped the tempo and Formartine could not cope with the intensity of our play. From then until half time the ball was rarely out of their half. We got our deserved equaliser just before half time but I think the break did us more damage than good as again we were slow to start the second half and again went behind to an early goal. Formartine then had a 20 minute spell with a lot of the ball so I decided to change our shape a bit to counteract them and it seemed to work as we came right back in to it again and scored a wonderful goal through Paul Campbell. That was just what he needed to get him up and running for the season so hopefully he goes on from this. In extra time I thought there would only be one winner as our fitness was better than theirs but they managed to hold out until penalties. Then it s just a lottery, although I thought all of our pens were excellent, including Leask's. Now for a trip to Buckie which will be as tough if not tougher than Formartine as they are undoubtedly the form team in the league but cup games are one-off so we will go there looking to progress. You have been forced to call up a number of the younger players in the last two games? How pleased have you been with their performances? We have a tight squad as it is with only 18 players when all available. We have a couple of guys offshore at the moment and then a few injuries so we have had to throw some youngsters in at the deep end but each one has done what was asked of them when required. Even Sean Douglas on Wednesday night who can say he made his debut against Formartine in a cup game. I have high hopes for the youngsters. There is no question they have the ability to be highland league players, it is more a question of do they have the attitude and commitment? That is why I have drip fed a few in to give them a taste of life in the highland league but also to give me an insight in to how they cope playing for the first team, and so far I think its safe to say the future of Fraserburgh FC is looking bright. It will be a much changed Nairn County team that visits the Bellslea today but I take it you are expecting as tough a match as usual against them? It is difficult as like every other team, we do not know much about Nairn. What I do know is that they will be well organised and work very hard for their manager. What they have now is a team full of players with something to prove. They will not have a lot of experience in the highland league but will be fit and will come down to Bellslea with little fear. We will have to be at our best once again if we are to get anything from this game. All the Best Mark

It has been a tough few months for the club but now everything is beginning to settle down, we can definitely look to the future with renewed positivity. Earlier this month, we managed to secure the services of Ronnie Sharp as our manager. He has quickly assembled his backroom team which will see Andy Naismith and Scott MacDonald continue as assistant manager and physio respectively while Michael Rae has joined us as goalkeeping coach. It would be remiss of me at this stage to overlook the part played by Andy Naismith this summer. He stepped into the breach at extremely short notice to run the team for the first few weeks of pre-season training and guided us through our friendly match against Inverness CT. I am extremely grateful to Andy for his contribution in taking training prior to Ronnie s appointment and I am delighted that he has agreed to stay on and be a part of the new management structure. The next issue that was addressed following the appointment of the manager was the club s crippling wage bill. It was agreed to implement a structure where all players in the first team squad will be paid the same monthly wage going forward. This meant approaching the playing squad to ask them to consider pay cuts and making them an offer based on the new budget for wages, which was formulated by the Company Secretary. Those who refused our offer were made available for transfer and all have now left the club with the best wishes of everyone at Nairn County. We managed to bring in transfer fees for all of these players and they all left on extremely amicable terms. I completely understand their standpoints and I look forward to welcoming them all back to Station Park with their new clubs in the future. Those who have agreed to the new pay structure now form the nucleus of our playing squad, namely Dylan Maclean, Kenny McKenzie, Paul Macleod, Wayne Mackintosh, Ross Naismith, Callum Maclean, Gregg Main, Jordan Macrae and Glenn Main. This will be supplement by players from our under-20s squad with five of them involved in Saturday s friendly match at Inverness City. What these remaining players have done for the club is incredible. The financial sacrifices that some of them have made to remain with Nairn County are monumental. If anyone is feeling sorry for me or anyone else involved in the running of the club with the additional workload we have all been landed with over the last few months then they should not we are all loving being involved in the club and there is a real sense of positivity behind the scenes. It is the players who have been the real victims in all of this and the loyalty of those who have agreed to stay is much appreciated while those who have left have done so with the minimum of fuss. 9 Nairn county player profiles 3. Kenny McKenzie (midfielder): Now entering his second season with Nairn County, this languid wide player impressed all observers with his cool head whenever he was in possession of the ball last season. Arrived from Fort William last summer, he is capable of playing at full back or wide in midfield on the left hand side as well as in the middle of the park. 4. Paul Macleod (defender): A solid defender who wears his heart on his sleeve. Came through the youth ranks at Nairn County and is now among the most experienced players in the squad. Capable of operating at right back or in the centre of the defence, one thing he can never be accused of is a lack of passion or commitment to the cause. 5. Calum Riddell (defender): A summer signing from Nairn St Ninian who impressed during a trial period over the summer. Good in the air and solid across the ground, he is also able to play in centre midfield. Originally came through the Nairn County youth ranks and after six years away, he is eager to make up for lost time in the Scottish Highland League. 6. Wayne Mackintosh (midfielder): Club captain and one of the longest serving players in the first team squad having debuted back in He is now enjoying his testimonial season having won the Highland League Cup once and North of Scotland Cup twice. He is relishing the challenge of leading Ronnie Sharp s young and vibrant side. 7. Ross Naismith (midfielder): An attack-minded player with an eye for the spectacular, he is now receiving the chance to establish himself as one of the first names on the team sheet after four years as a bit-part player. A real flair player whose creativity and set piece delivery is going to play an important part in Nairn s attacking ambitions this season. 8. Callum Maclean (midfielder): This neat and tidy midfielder is entering his second season with the club having worked his way into the team during his maiden campaign at Station Park. Rarely wastes a pass and likes to keep possession ticking over at the base of the Nairn midfield, he is extremely comfortable in possession and has the ability to unlock an opposing defence. 9. Gary Kerr (attacker): Returned to Nairn County in the summer after a year away from the club. This bustling centre forward opened his account for the season with a thumping header against Deveronvale in the second game of the season. He is eager to prove himself in County colours after being limited to just a handful of appearances in his first spell at the club. 10. Gregg Main (midfielder): A tough-tackling midfield player who has spent his entire career at Station Park, except for a season on loan at Nairn St Ninian. He has won two North of Scotland Cups and the Highland League Cup during a decorated spell at Station Park. He is capable of playing deep in midfield or behind the strikers. 11. Jordan Macrae (attacker): This young talent with bags of potential has stepped into the first team squad seamlessly following promotion from the under-20s. A goals-laden season in the North of Scotland League for the U20s led to him being made a permanent member of the first team squad at only 18. His skills, pace and finishing ability mark him out as a potential star of the future. 12. Dylan Mackenzie (attacker): Another young talent who has been brought to the club to play first team football despite his young age. He was brought in from Clachnacuddin in the summer having bagged a hat trick for their under-20s against Nairn County in the North of Scotland League last season. A fast and direct player, he is another with the potential to go on and establish himself as a regular in the team over the next few seasons. 17. Jamie Mackay (attacker): Back in the Scottish Highland League and at Nairn County after a spell playing amateur football in Inverness, this former Brora Rangers and Lossiemouth player impressed enough during a preseason trial to be handed a deal. His quick and direct style on the right hand side of the attack has already proved to be a thorn in the side of opposition defences. 18. Jack Maclean (midfielder): This local youngster was thrown in at the deep end on the opening day of the season as he made his first start for the club against Brora Rangers. He did not let the occasion faze him though with an assured display in the centre of the park which he followed up with another confidence-boosting outing in an unfamiliar right back role the following week. 19. Glenn Main (defender): Now among the most experienced players at the club, he can play in the centre of the defence or at right back, as well as in the middle of the park. Appointed vice-captain in the summer for his home town club where he has played in North of Scotland Cup and Highland League Cup winning teams.

10 Nairn county player profiles 21. Callum Ednie (defender): A young left back who was handed a debut on the opening day of the 2016/17 Scottish Highland League season. Looked assured as the game wore on despite the big occasion and possess all of the physical attributes to become a regular part of the defence over the next few seasons. 23. William Barron (midfielder): Back at Nairn County after six years away, this veteran is the most experienced member of the squad and already a fans favourite from his first spell at the club, where he won the North of Scotland Cup in 2005 and 2008 the second as captain. He brings championship-winning experience from Forres Mechanics 2012 success which can only be beneficial to the young players around about him. Ronald Sharp (manager): Back in the Station Park hot seat after an absence of 12 years. He played for the club in the early to mid 1980s before moving to Clachnacuddin for a short spell. He came back to Station Park via Nairn St Ninian before again returning to Saints as he looked to wind down his playing career. The call came in 1999 to come back to Nairn County for a third spell, this time as player / manager and he took the club to four semi finals and fifth place in the table during his five-year reign. Nine years as boss of St Ninian with two Elginshire Cup wins and two promotions followed after which he took on the role of Nairn County under-20s coach in 2015 having been voted in to the Nairn County Team of the Century by the fans the previous year. The Station Park manager s vacancy this summer and the chance to rebuild the squad and restructure the footballing side of the club in his own image was too big a pull to reject and he was appointed as manager of Nairn County for the second time on July 11th (continued from page 8) In fact, one player who left has agreed to write off a signing-on fee due to him while another could have walked away for free under the terms of his contract but insisted that we received a transfer fee for his services. The Nairn supporters have some great icons of the past, who are rightly revered among the fans, such as Johnston, Allan, Cochrane and Brown. I hope that the names listed above are mentioned in the same breath in the future for the sacrifices they have made this summer which has essentially saved the club and allowed us to move forward and hopefully prosper. The manager now knows which players he has left and is working extremely hard to add some experience and additional quality to the ranks. All things going well, we hope to have some news on that front before Saturday s opening fixture with Brora Rangers. Keep an eye on the club s official website, Facebook page and Twitter County for confirmation of any completed deals. It is going to take time and it is going to take patience on everyone s part for us to build the squad up again given the upheaval experienced this summer. While supporting the will of the manager as much as I possibly can, one thing I will steadfastly refuse to do is allow the wage bill to spiral out of control again so that the very existence of Nairn County is ever in doubt. I am also delighted to report that season ticket sales have more than doubled. This is purely public sales and does not include the Community Season Tickets initiative that we launched earlier this month. The supporters have been fantastic in rallying round and the numbers who turned out for our pre-season friendlies against Inverness CT and Nairn St Ninian were great. We need you to stick with us throughout the season and turn up in your numbers at Station Park. We are now entering the start of a new season and that means the return of significant running costs which lie dormant during the summer months. Things like referees fees, transport to away games, floodlighting and winter training facilities all have to be paid for and do not come cheap with combined costs running well into the tens of thousands every year. We are yet to attract a main sponsor to help cover these costs and my words to anyone waiting in the wings for the situation at the club to settle down would be to come forward now. We have a forwardthinking manager and a tireless, innovative Management Committee in place with both having Nairn County FC at heart, so the club is ready to progress and move forward into a new era. If anyone is interested in assisting us with the above stated costs or becoming involved as a sponsor, please contact me by ing secretary@nairncountyfc.co.uk. Any supporters who are looking to purchase season tickets prior to the big kick-off on Saturday can do so from the Town Barber with adults costing 115 and concessions priced at 70. Supporters can also contribute a minimum of 10 per month by Standing Order to the Fans Fund. All monies raised from this venture go directly to the running costs of the club. To join, simply setup a Standing Order with your bank for a minimum payment of 10 per month to be made to Nairn County Sportsman s Dinner, Royal Bank of Scotland, High Street, Nairn, account number , sort code Of course, the most important thing any fan can do is turn up on a matchday to cheer on the team so on that note, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Station Park on Saturday to support us against Brora Rangers. Enjoy the season and thank you for your wonderful support. DONALD MATHESON, Chairman, Nairn County FC

11 Match Highland Report Vs league strathspey round thistle up Pre Season Friendly Match, Saturday 30 th July 2016, Fraserburgh v Strathspey Thistle, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh Fraserburgh took the spoils against Strathspey and got off to the best possible start in this season s Highland League. The win gives the Broch a great confidence boost going into the campaign. However, for Strathspey, it s back to the drawing board for manager Brian Grant. It was a dream comeback for youngster Marc Lawrence, who re-joined the Broch on-loan from Peterhead this week and it only took 65 seconds for him to score on his return. Dean Cowie s drilled free-kick was spilled by Thistle goalkeeper Michael MacCallum and Lawrence fired home from close range. The home side had a great opportunity minutes after the opening goal when Aidan Combe got on the end of a Marc Dickson through-ball, however he could only poke his effort into MacCallum s hands. Mid-way through the half Lawrence had a chance to double his and Fraserburgh s tally after he got on the end of a lovely flick by Greg Buchan, but his shot was saved excellently by the Strathspey goalkeeper. The closest the visitors came to scoring was a 30-yard effort from James McShane that went narrowly wide of Paul Leask s goal. Lawrence and Combe then combined to dispossess Strathspey defender and Paul Campbell then found himself clear on goal but he shot wide of the far post. New signing Buchan had to go off for the Broch, but the experienced William West took his place and made an immediate impact. Two minutes after coming on, the substitute found the net when he got on the end of a Ryan Cowie free-kick and sent a glancing header goal-bound, which beat MacCallum. The home side seemed to take their foot off the gas a little in the second half, which manager Mark Cowie was unhappy about. Despite not creating as many opportunities as they did in the first half the Broch still went close to adding to their tally with the combination of a Ryan Cowie delivery and a West header. The same player then found Russell McBride but he sent a header over the bar. Strathspey threatened from a free kick by Adam McLeod but West was back to clear the danger. Another Ryan Cowie delivery from a corner was met on the full by Bryan Hay but he failed to hit the target. The Broch full back was proving a handful for the visitors with his dead ball prowess setting up West again who saw his header cleared off the line. Grant Noble then set up a chance for Marc Dickson but the Broch player saw his effort from the edge of the penalty area fly wide. With minutes left in the match substitute Grant Noble made it 3-0 to Fraserburgh with a dipping effort from the edge of the box going over MacCallum. Full Time: Fraserburgh 3-0 Strathspey Thistle Fraserburgh: Paul Leask, Marc Dickson, Russell McBride, Ryan Cowie, Bryan Hay, Dean Cowie, Marc Lawrence, Greg Buchan (William West 35), Paul Campbell (Grant Noble 68), Aidan Combe (Michael Rae 85) Stuart Taylor. Defenders Ben Leslie (19), Christopher Hay (19), Cory Ritchie (17) and Clark Robertson (23) and midfielders Tom Andrews (17) and Ross Still (21) have all signed on at Christie Park. Speaking on getting the new recruits signed up, Co-Manager Mark Gray said: It s good to get them in, they ve all done well during pre-season and we ll now look to push them and help them develop. Ross has experience in the Highland League from Keith and Inverurie Loco Works, Cory was just released from Inverness Caledonian Thistle while Ben and Tom featured in our development squads last season. Some of them will head out on loan and that ll help them get regular football and experience and we re lucky we have a good relationship with a number of junior club to allow us to do that, as well as using them in the Aberdeenshire League fixtures. Since signing, Tom Andrews, Ben Leslie and Clark Robertson have now joined junior side Lewis United on loan for the season. Meanwhile, centre-half Mark Lawson has ended his two-year association with the club as he returns to the junior ranks following a move to Maud. The former Inverurie Loco Works and Formartine United defender joined the club in September 2014 from Ellon Utd and despite his playing time coming to an end at Christie Park, he will continue to work with the club s under 17 development side. Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh is on Wednesday 24th August. Turriff United v Cove Rangers is on Wednesday 7th September. In other news from Bellslea, defender Courtney Cooper has moved to Keith. Team News for Saturday 13 th August Buckie Thistle v Fort William Buckie have started the season in superb form, scoring 18 goals in three games and they re boosted further by the return of the influential Chris Angus to their squad for the visit of Fort William. Kai Ross remains out with a knee problem. Fort are still looking for their first points of the season and striker Scott Davidson again misses out through injury. Iain MacLellan is also unavailable due to work commitments. Cove Rangers v Brora Rangers Match of the day is undoubtedly at Harlaw Park in Inverurie as champions Cove Rangers take on Brora Rangers. Cove will be without Daniel Park, Grant Campbell and Dean Lawrie as they look to lay down an early marker in the defence of their title. Brora Player-Manager Grant Munro has a fully fit squad to choose from for the journey south, a win for The Cattachs would give them an early six-point lead over their title rivals. Formartine United v Clachnacuddin Formartine have surprisingly lost three in a row and will hope to bounce back at home to Clach. Clach are without a win in their opening two fixtures themselves and will be without David McGurk and Duncan Jones for the trip to North Lodge Park. Stuart Leslie and Liam Shewan return to the squad. Forres Mechanics v Deveronvale Forres host Deveronvale at Mosset Park and they will be without Jordan Wardrope and Drew Howard with knee and hamstring injuries respectively. Martin Groat and Fraser Forbes are also unavailable for the Moray side. Vale have started their league campaign with two wins from two league games and played well in defeat to Cove on Wednesday night. Liam Forbes and Grant Pennet are added to the squad from the Cove match. Fraserburgh v Nairn County Fraserburgh followed up their wins over Strathspey and Fort William with an excellent display in the Aberdeenshire Cup victory at Formartine in midweek. Jamie Beagrie and Willie West are still offshore for the visit of Nairn, Greg Buchan and Cammy Buchan remain out injured and Stuart Taylor is unavailable. Nairn are still searching for their first league points and they have Paul McLeod and Calum Riddell available again, but will be without Willie Barron due to commitments. Keith v Strathspey Thistle Keith crashed out of the Aberdeenshire Cup to in-form Buckie on Wednesday night, but they have Kris Duncan and Craig Cormack back in the squad for the visit of Strathspey. Michael Dunn, Ryan Robertson, Ryan Stewart and Michael Ewen all miss out through injury, while Ryan Spink, James Brownie, Courtney Cooper, Hamza Ouahbi and Devin Kennedy-Colbert are unavailable. David Dey has joined Buckie Rovers on a twomonth loan deal. Strathspey will have to shore up a defence that conceded nine at home to Buckie last weekend if they re to get anything from the trip to Kynoch Park. Scott Hume is suspended and Jack Maley out with an ankle injury for the Grantown Jags. Rothes v Inverurie Loco Works Rothes were unlucky to leave Christie Park empty-handed last Saturday and they ll look to make amends at home to Inverurie Locos. Boss Fraser Bremner has a fully fit squad to choose from, minus Callum McIntosh, who is offshore. Locos were also unfortunate to lose out by the odd goal in five against champions Cove, and they also have a full squad for the trip to Mackessack Park. (continued on page 28)

14 FFCSC NEWS/CLUB NEWS Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club News We welcome everyone involved with Nairn County to the Bellslea for today s Highland League match. Nairn have had a difficult start to the season and they sit in seventeenth place in the league with 0 points from 2 matches played. Last Saturday they lost by 2 goals to 1 at home to Deveronvale. In the corresponding fixture from last season the Broch won at the Bellslea by 1 goal to nil with Marc Lawrence scoring the only goal of the game. It was a real boost to see Marc Lawrence back at the Broch on loan from Peterhead, Marc gives a real goal threat from midfield as he proved within seconds against Strathspey Thistle in our opening game. Last Saturday we ran out comfortable winners at Fort William with a classy hat rick from Grant Noble. It was a poor first half but some clinical finishing in the second half from Grant allowed Mark Cowie to blood three of the youth team, Liam Norris, Jack Simpson and Marc Summers all made their debuts for the club. We had a fantastic win at Formartine United on Wednesday night on penalties after a 3-3 draw after extra time with the Broch s goals coming from Russell McBride, Paul Campbell & Dean Cowie which sets us up for a semi final tie at Buckie Thistle. We will be running a supporters bus to the Forres game next Saturday 20 th of August which will leave from the Elizabethan Bar at 12:15pm. Bus prices are 18 for adults and 10 for others. We will also be running a bus to the Cove game at Huntly on Saturday 27 th of August which will leave from the Elizabethan Bar at 12:45pm. Bus prices are 10 for adults and 5 for others. We wish Courtney the very best of luck with his new club and thank him for all he did in his time with the Broch. Youngsters Liam Norris, Jack Simpson and Marc Summers all made their first team debuts in the 3-0 victory at Fort William whilst Sean Douglas made his first team debut in the Aberdeenshire Cup victory against Formartine United in midweek. Once again we have promoted four youngsters into first team football. While we were struggling for a team in both games with only 11/12 fit players it was a great opportunity to give these lads valuable experience. All four did very well when they came on and hopefully we will see more from them in the future. Well done lads.

15 Match report vs fort william Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 6 th August 2016, Fort William v Fraserburgh, Claggan Park, Fort William The Broch eventually took all three points from the long journey to Fort William thanks to Grant Noble s first hattrick for the club. It was a comfortable victory in the end but the home side made the visitors work hard for the points especially in the first half. Iain Maclellan had the first chance for the home side but saw his shot saved by Paul Leask in the first minute. There was a bit of a stramash in the Fort penalty area on six minutes after a Ryan Cowie corner wasn t properly cleared but the danger was avoided. On 14 minutes a long ball out of defence by Russell McBride found Grant Noble but keeper Douglas MacLennan blocked his effort. The home side survived another scare on 19 minutes when Ryan Cowie s free kick from the left was headed over his own bar by David Moffat. At the other end Bryan Hay almost gifted Fort a goal when he overhit his backpass but it went wide of the post for a corner. Michael Rae was next to try his luck for the Broch on 24 minutes but he saw his stinging shot save b y Maclennan. A Ryan Cowie corner to the back post on 33 minutes looked to have given Stuart Taylor a great chance for the opener but he couldn t direct his header on target. Just before the break the Broch defence failed to clear the ball properly and Adam Porritt saw his 25 yarder well saved by Leask. The Broch came out looking for a goal at the start of the second half and Taylor saw his shot well saved. The breakthrough came on 52 minutes when Mark Lawrence received Dean Cowie s pass on the wing and his cross was swept home by Grant Noble. Four minutes later it was 2-0 from another well worked move. Noble played the ball out to Ryan Cowie who found Marc Dickson with a through ball and he found Noble who finished with a low drive. On 70 minutes Michael Rae played the ball out to Dickson who crossed into the box but Lawrence saw his shot blocked. The third goal came on 78 minutes after good passing between Graham Johnston, Liam Norris and Michael Rae who found Grant Noble who chipped his shot past the keeper into the far corner of the net. Paul Leask almost joined the fun when a long kick out bounced wickedly and hit the Fort William bar. Fort had a couple of late efforts from Porritt and Daniel Highet but the Broch defence held out for the clean sheet. 25 Match SEASON reports BY SEASON formartine 1975/76 United Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final, Wednesday 10 th August 2016, Formartine United v Fraserburgh, North Lodge Park, Pitmedden Fraserburgh s cup heroics continued as they started their Aberdeenshire Cup defence by beating Formartine on penalties after a 3-3 draw. The home side took the lead twice in the regulation 90 minutes, but Mark Cowie s men fought hard and forced the game to extra-time. Dean Cowie then scored for the Broch, however it was cancelled out by Paul Lawson s freekick. Ryan Cowie converted the decisive penalty as the visitors won the shootout 5-4. United started the game strongly and Connor Gethins latched onto Scott Barbour s through-ball, however he could only fire wide. That chance didn t seem to get to the striker though, as he opened the scoring only seven minutes in. Barbour dispossessed Marc Dickson and sent a floating cross into the back post, where Gethins was positioned to divert his header into the net. Fraserburgh came into the game a lot more as it continued. A 1-2 between Grant Noble and Graham Johnston saw the former rifle in a shot from 16 yards which Reid did well to tip over the bar. On the brink of half-time the visitors levelled it up when captain Russell McBride headed home at the back post from a Graham Johnston corner. The hosts were the better team in the early stages of the second period. Within minutes of kick-off, United put their noses in front again, as Graeme Rodger volleyed home a Neil McVitie cross into the bottom left corner. Fraserburgh showed their fighting mentality as the Formartine goal only seemed to make them step up their game. Mid-way through the second half Paul Campbell unleashed a thunderous shot into the top right corner of the net to again put the visitors on level terms. Both teams tried to win it before the end with Noble going close for the Broch and Berton flashing a shot wide at the other end. The Broch struck first in extra-time when Dean Cowie got on the end of a knock-back from Campbell to hit a low drive past defenders, but more importantly into the back of the net. That certainly didn t faze the home side because just four minutes later, Lawson s deflected free-kick beat Broch keeper Paul Leask, which was enough to force extra-time. The first six penalties were converted, including a spot-kick from Fraserburgh goalie Leask. Lawson stepped up to take Formartine s fourth, but it was a poor penalty which Leask saved easily. All the following takers scored which left Ryan Cowie the chance to win the tie. He rifled his penalty into the bottom right corner giving United keeper Andy Reid had no chance. This win for Fraserburgh is the start of their defence of the trophy and they will visit Buckie Thistle in the next round. The Broch also won last season's Aberdeenshire Shield. Full Time: Formartine United 3-3 Fraserburgh Formartine United: Andrew Reid, Neil McVitie, Stuart Smith, Paul Lawson, Jonathan Crawford (Scott Henry 97), Jamie Michie (Max Berton 84), Graeme Rodger, Calum Dingwall, Conor Gethins (Neil Gauld 75), Garry Wood, Scott Barbour. Hearts won 2-1 but we did beat Arbroath in a pre season friendly 2-0. The League campaign got off to the perfect start with a comfortable win over Rothes by 3-0 with Rexy Hunter scoring twice and Bertie Bowie notching the other. A shock 4-2 defeat at home to Vale in the League Cup wasn t the best of follow ups, especially as we were 2-0 up after 14 minutes thanks to Rexy Hunter s brace. But Vale pulled us back and went ahead 4-2 before Billy Massie scored in the last minute to make it Broch 3 Vale 4. We bounced back after that, with four straight wins against Lossiemouth, Huntly home and away and Clach to go top of the table with Rexy Hunter in fine scoring form and Murdo Watson also pitching in with some important goals. That was followed by a 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Caley before a fine 2-2 draw up at Nairn County with Dave McKenzie and Brian Newlands on the scoresheet set things up for the home Qualifying Cup tie against Forres Mechanics. Another shock came along in the shape of a defeat to Forres in the Qualifying Cup 2 nd Round when at the time the length of the table separated the two teams. Bowie and Hunter had shots that hit the woodwork, but D. Fraser, in a rare Forres raid, hit a stunning 30 yard shot into the top corner of the net. Forres held on after that to go into the hat for the next round. October wasn t a good month, with defeats by Inverness Thistle (4-0), Elgin City (2-1) followed by Ross County (0-3) and a 0-0 draw at Buckie Thistle with one solitary win against Brora rangers at the Bellslea thanks to Eddie Gammack, Rexy Hunter and Billy Massie. A change of fortune in November saw a 5-0 thrashing of Deveronvale with Hunter grabbing a hat-trick and McKenzie and Roger also on the scoresheet, a 1-1 draw at title challengers Keith thanks to Bobby Fraser s strike, followed by a 3-1 victory away to Caley, with Newlands, Hunter and a late Fraser strike counting for the Broch. On Saturday 15 th November the top of the league table had Inverness Thistle on 20 points with the Broch a point back and Nairn on 18 but they had played two games less. The following Saturday Rexy Hunter s hat-trick was good enough to see off Buckie Thistle 3-1 at Bellslea before a 2-1 win at Rothes rounded off a great month with Bobby Fraser and Brian Newlands doing the damage. Into December and Elgin City held out for a 1-1 draw at Bellslea, Hunter scoring for the Broch. That was followed by a 4-2 home defeat by Nairn County with Bobby Fraser and Kenny Roger goals not enough to save the Broch. That result would prove pivotal in the final league standings. The Christmas derbies came along with the local Broch boys taking on Peterhead s Aberdeen select. There was always a large Broch following at these games and they weren t disappointed with Roger and Duthie solid at the back and Bowie, Newlands and Hunter not giving the home defence a minute of peace. The game was a classic with Newlands putting the Broch ahead on 29 minutes the Hunter crashed home an 18 yarder with McHattie clutching at fresh air. O Hara pulled one back on the hour but the day belonged to the Broch with final score of 1-2. Following an incident at Christie Park, Huntly where referee George McRae of Fraserburgh was pushed to the ground the SFA announced that the ground would be closed for two months. The club was also fined 100. Fraserburgh 2 Peterhead 1.

27 SEASON BY SEASON 1975/76 Onto the return match against Peterhead which will go down long in the memory of Broch fans. The Bloo Toon were strolling it and led through O Hara s strike on 61 minutes, but the Broch put on Massie and Crawford for Fraser and Watson and put Tozy up front. Kicking uphill to the clinic end, Tozy ran on to a through ball and crashed a shot into the roof of the net to make it 1-1. The Bellslea went wild. Three minutes later the same player hit a poor shot at McHattie only for it to hit him on the leg and squirm under his body and into the net. There was no wall in front of the stand at the time and the force of the crowd pulled the fence down with Tozy celebrating in the crowd and referee Larry Officer looking on in amazement. The game finished Fraserburgh 2 Peterhead 1. It was a good festive season for the Broch and six wins after the New Year made all the league s big guns sit up and take notice. A 5-1 away win over Vale with Hunter (2), Roger, Gammack and Massie scoring, was followed up by a 3-2 win at Clach with an 88 th minute strike from Ian Sharp securing the points after Newlands and Hunter had scored earlier in the match. Then came a must win game against Keith at Bellslea with Rexy Hunter scoring the only goal. We then hit Lossie for seven with Newlands and Hunter both bagging hat-tricks and Bowie getting the seventh. A 2-1 win at Forres thanks to Newlands double kept things going before the next home game against bogey team Inverness Thistle. A big blow came when Eddie Gammack broke his leg in the Broch s 2-1 win at Forres. With the crowd still flocking into the Bellslea, Bowie put the Broch ahead after 11 seconds and Watson sealed the victory in the 80 th minute. In between Kenny Roger got his marching orders after pushing Charlie Duncan who had fouled keeper Gray. All of that good work halted with a shock 2-1 defeat at Brora on 21 st February with Newlands again on the scoresheet for the Broch, though after that hiccup we won the next six games on the trot. 1-0 at home to Buckie Thistle and then an impressive 4-2 at Ross County. Fraser (8), Hunter (22) & Watson (30) had the Broch in easy street, before Urquhart hit back to make it 3-1. An own goal from Brett made it 4-1 with the points firmly heading back to Bellslea before a late strike by County made the score more respectable. At the time Rexy Hunter was hitting the headlines for his goalscoring feats. Mintlaw plumber finds leaks in Highland League defences. He had scored 20 goals so far that season, but his first spell had only lasted half a season before Peterhead had come calling. They must have had a thing for Broch players as over the years Dennis Forsyth, Peter McDonald, Jimmy Noble, Charlie Esslemont had all been lured from the Bellslea. A 1-0 win against Buckie Thistle in the Aberdeenshire Cup semi final was light relief from league business with that man Hunter again providing the goal. Saturday March 20 th was our last league game at home to Forres Mechanics which ended in a 4-2 win with Hunter (2), Fraser and McKenzie doing the business for the home side. Next up was Huntly in the Final of the Aberdeenshire Cup at the Bellslea. Two goals from McKenzie and one from Bowie had the 1500 crowd on their feet. Finnie scored a late consolation for Huntly but the game was well over by then and the Broch had triumphed in front of their own fans. Teams: Broch: Gray, Sharp, Cardno, McKenzie, Roger, Duthie, Hunter, Watson, Newlands, Stephen, Bowie. Subs: Fraser, Massie. Huntly: Cooper, Gerrard, Barzoni, Raffan, Finnie, Watson, Chalmers, Laws, Simpson, Donald, McBain. Subs: McKenzie, Johnston. Ref: W.D. Reid (Aberdeen). The same two sides met almost 6 weeks later in the Bells Cup quarter final with the Broch again running out winners this time 3-2 with Newlands, Hunter and McKenzie once again on the scoresheet. Goals from Bertie Bowie and Kenny Roger were then enough to see off Buckie Thistle in the semi final of the Bells Cup to set up a showdown against the old enemy Peterhead. But that would have to be put on the back burner as the Broch were made to wait to see if Keith or Nairn dropped some points in the title run-in. Some Broch supporters went to Rothes on the day they played Nairn to add a bit of support for the home side, but they had to leave early as the visitors support were upset at dropping a point, especially as a win would have seen them clinch the championship. There were provisional arrangements made for three play off ties involving Fraserburgh, Keith and Nairn but it turned out to be Broch v Nairn on Monday 17 th May at Borough Briggs, Elgin. The Broch was at fever pitch and it was reported that 2,000 supporters from the town travelled to Elgin that night. The kick off was delayed to let the large crowd in with the tension becoming almost unbearable. When the game began both teams were making mistakes. Charlie Gray was having an uncomfortable night with Nairn s high ball tactics but the Broch couldn t seem to put two passes together. Duthie hooked a certain goal off the line with Gray beaten, then disaster came just a minute from the interval when Nairn took the lead with Gordon heading into the roof of the net. The Broch started the second half brightly and on 50 minutes when a Roger free kick was only half cleared, Gibby Stephen calmly slotted into the net as the Broch supporters in the ground erupted. It was all Broch after that and in the last minute Mitchell kicked the ball off the line as the referee blew for full time. In extra time disaster struck again when Tozy and Sharpie went for the same ball and it broke kindly for Robertson to beat Gray with a chip to make the final score Nairn 2 Fraserburgh 1. The teams:

28 SEASON BY SEASON 1975/76 Broch: Gray, Sharp, Cardno, McKenzie, Roger, Duthie, Watson (Massie), Hunter, Newlands (McKay), Stephen, Bowie. Nairn County: Konczak, Forsyth, R. Mitchell, Cochrane, Brown, Wilson (W. Mitchell), D. Robertson, Gordon (Hendry), MacIldownie, P. Robertson. Referee: L.J.S. Officer (Aberdeen) Attendance 3,367, receipts 1,040 The following morning s headlines made grim reading for Broch fans It s Nairn s title after extra time and Broch a gloomy town after title defeat On Thursday 27 th May we had a Bells Cup Final to take care of. It must have taken a great deal of motivation from the players to be up for this game and a Kenny Roger 35 yard free kick was all that eventually separated the teams. Final score Broch 1 Peterhead 0. Despite that win it was going to be a long time to get over being so close to the league title. (continued from page 13) Turriff United v Huntly Turriff bounced back from defeat at Lossiemouth to win convincingly at tomorrow s opponents Huntly in midweek, and will look for a similar result at The Haughs. Robbie Allan, Andrew Smith and Cammy Bowden all miss out for the home side. Huntly get the chance to quickly avenge Wednesday s defeat and follow-up their opening game victory over Rothes last weekend. Wick Academy v Lossiemouth Wick have made a great start to their season, beating Turriff and Formartine without conceding a goal in the process. Lossiemouth are the visitors to Harmsworth Park tomorrow and it should be an intriguing encounter, with Lossie also on maximum points from their first two matches. Lossie are without the unavailable Aaron Hamilton, Jordan Main, Martin McMullan and Joao Rodrigues, while Tony Ross and Ryan Farquhar are both doubtful. Harry Noble, Ally Bellingham and Willie Mathers are all available again and return to the squad.
