3 CHAIRMANS WELCOME Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Wick Academy to Bellslea Park for our P&J Highland League tie. It is always good to welcome our friends from the north to Bellslea as it gives us an opportunity to reciprocate the excellent welcome we receive when we travel to Wick. The games are normally entertaining affairs and there is no doubt that Wick have been one of the best footballing sides in the league for a number of years. They won their first senior trophy earlier in the season and it was great for the guys who have been with the club since they came into the league. Clair Harper and Pat Miller to name but a few. There have been a few rumours flying around regarding the club or more specifically myself apparently trying to break up the Highland League. I was told in Inverness last Saturday that I was the ringleader and me and my gang of Aberdeenshire mates were trying to break away and make a league of our own. This isn t the first time I have heard this and sometimes from people who I have known for years. They obviously don t know me that well. I am not a fan of the press and believe that the people who really know me will know the truth but maybe that is to blame as I haven t publically stated my case. I don t normally care what others think but I have taken exception to this. The Highland League is something I am immensely proud to be involved in and unlike some other clubs we at the Broch don t always put ourselves first and actually think of the league first. The last thing I want to see is the league break up. I can also speak for my so called gang in saying that nobody I know of wants the league to break up. Some clubs would like people to think we are but they need to have a look at themselves first before throwing mud in others direction. Our position is clear and simple; if the league increases in size from 18 clubs then we don t think it is feasible to complete the season without an excessive amount of midweek games so would like the league to split into two divisions on merit. There have been discussions on how this would work and some good ideas put forward. Likewise there have been some bad ones. We all enjoy the special things we have where we see everyone twice a season and we can enjoy each other s company. There are more important things than having a drink in the boardroom however. It s about putting on something that is entertaining and which will attract supporters to the games and yes, in this day and age, people to the Hospitality Lounges. That s how the clubs will survive. Someone was complaining that we don t ask the fans views. Well a) I am a fan first and foremost b) I stand amongst the fans on a Saturday. I am never in the stand so people know where to find me. If I can answer the questions then I will do so. We don t need a Fans Forum for that. I don t normally care what other say. In the 47 years I have been alive I have been skinny, fat, ginger, bald, freckly, wear glasses and at school I was in the free dinners queue because I was in a single parent household. So I have covered a broad range of situations which have brought unkind words but to be accused of wanting to break the league up then I am not accepting that. Finally, as this is our last home game of the season I would like to express our sincere thanks to all the fans, advertisers, sponsors and volunteers who have supported us over the course of the season. We couldn t do it without you. 4 MANAGER S NOTES You must have been disappointed with the result against Turriff considering you dominated the game for long spells with Joe Barbour having very little to do? It's not the first time that this has happened. Too often this season we have dominated games but failed to take our chances and then paid the price by losing the game by the odd goal. We need to start converting chances and killing teams off. This then allows you to approach the later stages differently but as I ve said too often this year we have not scored when chances have came our way and its cost us valuable wins. That's another game gone by where we have dominated yet failed to win. We as managers all approach games to win them. We all have different styles and different thoughts and in Wednesday night Turriff s way of playing was successful and ours was not. You have two league matches left starting today with the Wick Academy game. I take it you are looking for the guys to finish the season with a flourish but that won't be easy against a good Wick side? Wick have been one of the best footballing sides in the league over the past few years. They like to get the ball down and play like ourselves. Up at Wick earlier in the season I felt we played some of our best football to date and they couldn't get near us but yet again we didn't score and ended up playing out a 0-0 scoreline. It is approaching the end of season but there is still a lot to play for. We can both climb the league between now and the last game so both teams will want to give their all. My lads also have a cup final place to play for so still plenty to do even at this stage. As you look back on your first full season what are the main positives you will take from it and what will you be looking to improve upon next year? I have enjoyed it which is the main thing. Obviously the big positive is we retained the Aberdeenshire Cup for another season. It was good to get my first trophy under my belt as I felt after that was a lot calmer knowing that I ve been successful already. As I have already mentioned we also have another cup final to play however this is in danger of becoming a farce as to when it will be played. I will reserve my comments for now. Next year I will be looking to do better in our league games. The final table does not lie and we will end up anywhere from 7th to 10th which in my eyes is not good enough for a club like Fraserburgh. We have lost too many home games which again is not acceptable to me. We need to make teams fear coming here again, doing that is one of my goals. We have started to strengthen with Jamie Beagrie coming in so I'm going to be doing my all to get as close to the top of the table by the New Year and then take it from there. I would just like to say s big thank you from me, my coaching staff and the players to firstly everyone at the club who have contributed in one way or another. Everyone has a job to do and without the hard work of everyone my job would be a lot harder. Also thank you to all the fans for supporting us throughout the season. Hopefully the cup win has gone some way to pay you back for the support and hopefully we can add another to the cabinet shortly. All the Best, Mark.

The club was known in Wick simply as Academy and sometimes in other parts of Caithness as Pulteneytown Academy. An indirect and unofficial connection with the local school of the same name was maintained with the election of a teacher, John Davidson as the first captain or leader' as it was termed in the minute book of the first meeting. The club's first game was a friendly away to Castletown. Home games were played at Harrow Park, now known of course as Harmsworth Park. Ten matches, with only two defeats, were played in that first season against teams like Thurso Thistle, Wick Thistle, John O Groat FC (formed that same year in Wick), Lybster Portland and Dunbeath. Academy's Qualifying Cup debut was a home tie on September 2, 1911 and a crowd of about 800 saw a 4-0 win against Inverness Thistle. Men paid 6d, boys 3d, ladies were admitted free and gate receipts were 17. Caledonian won a 2nd Round tie in Wick 4-1. Right winger in those games was Jimmy Miller who was later secretary and President, his commitment to the club continuing almost 50 years to As the only SFA club in Caithness (Thurso Pentland were also members for 3 years from 1936), Academy was allowed to sign players of other clubs to play in Qualifying Cup games. From 1928 onwards they were unbeaten at home in Qualifying Cup ties. In 1933 they beat Nairn, Caley and Keith, all away, to reach the Scottish Cup proper losing 3-0 to a strong Scottish League Division Two side, St Bernards on January 20, 1934 at the Gymnasium Ground in Edinburgh. In 1936 Academy drew 3-3 in Wick with local rivals Brora Rangers, won the replay and two more games at Forres and Buckie to earn a tie at Stirling. Academy scored first against King's Park but lost 6-1. Several prestigious friendlies were played and Celtic and Aberdeen were among the teams who appeared at Harmsworth Park in the 30s. Academy had also joined the North of Scotland FA in 1914 but had been unable to play their first tie away to Forres Mechanics as most of their players had been called up by the Territorials. They had to wait until 1954 to be readmitted but made up for lost time with a 4-3 win at Brora before losing 3-1 in the semi-final away to Caley. In 1960 the Caithness Amateur Football Association switched to summer football and to retain its SFA membership Wick Academy had to stay with the normal winter season playing only cup ties and friendlies for the next 12 years. After having several applications knocked back Academy were at last voted into the Highland League in 1994 when Caledonian and Inverness Thistle amalgamated and left to join the SFL along with Ross County. The first game at home to Cove Rangers drew a crowd of 1700 but ended with a 3-0 defeat. After a draw with Rothes, Academy beat the then League leaders Forres 1-0 and after three straight wins in October were briefly 4th in the table. In 2001/2 Qualifying Cup wins over Lossiemouth and Nairn County saw Academy in the Scottish Cup proper and BBC TV cameras were at Harmsworth Park where Threave Rovers won 3-2. Academy regularly reach the semi-final of the North Cup. The Club was one of the first Scottish Highland League sides to be awarded a SFA National Club License in February As a result of obtaining Club licensing the top two licensed SHFL Clubs were invited into the first round of the Ramsdens Cup. Wick Academy along with Inverurie Locos secured the two slots and Academy drew a home tie against Raith Rovers. The Scorries gave the 1st Division side a real fright and at 2 2 it looked as (continued on page 11)

10 Match Report Vs Nairn county Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Wednesday 6 th April 2016, Nairn County v Fraserburgh, Station Park, Nairn Fraserburgh took a sensational lead in the second minute when a cross into the Nairn box by Ryan Cowie was cleared to Ryan Christie 30 yards out and he fired an unstoppable bullet past Calum Antell into the top left hand corner of the net. It was almost 2-0 in the fourth minute when Paul Campbell and Marc Dickson combined to set up Michael Rae who saw his shot saved by Antell. Nairn tried to get back into the game and John Cameron s dangerous cross just evaded Glenn Main. On 15 minutes Steven Davidson did well to hold up the ball and find Ryan Cowie breaking into the penalty area and his left footed effort was blocked by Antell. Nairn had a chance from a Cameron corner on 16 minutes but Sean Webb headed wide from a good position. A minute later a defence splitting pass by Rae sent Campbell through one on one with Antell but the home keeper did well to save with his legs. The Nairn keeper was the hero again on 19 minutes when he did well to save a dean Cowie effort after Davidson s cross fell to the Broch midfielder. On 23 minutes Nairn s Ross Naismith picked the ball up and turned Russell McBride before shooting at goal which Joe Barbour saved at the expense of a corner. From the resultant set piece Rae cleared the ball off the line after an effort by Pollock. The Broch had another effort on 36 minutes from Dean Cowie s corner but Willie West could only head straight at Antell. A minute later Cowie crossed into the Nairn box to Davidson but the young striker couldn t direct his header on target. Nairn equalised on 38 minutes when the ball found its way to Gregg Main just outside the penalty area and he cracked home a drive high into the net after being allowed acres of space to shoot. Just before the interval Ross Naismith had a chance to shoot but he saw his goal bound effort blocked by Barbour. Half Time: Nairn County 1-1 Fraserburgh Michael Morrison replaced Ross Naismith at the start of the second half for Nairn. On 54 minutes the Broch won a free kick for a push on Campbell which Dean Cowie curled just over the bar. A couple of minutes later Rae did well to find Campbell who in turn found Davidson inside the Nairn box and the striker s effort was well saved by Antell. Aidan Combe then replaced Michael Rae for the visitors after 61 minutes. The midfielder s first involvement was to find Dean Cowie 20 yards out and he fired in a shot which was well held by Antell. Midway through the second half Davidson was booked for a robust challenge on Webb. A few minutes later he was replaced by Graham Johnston. Nairn made their second change after 76 minutes with Anthony Wallace coming on for Alan Pollock. The striker almost made an instant impact when a ball over the Broch defence found the Nairn hitman but he shot straight at Barbour from a good position. A minute later Sam Urquhart raced clear of the Broch defence but inexplicably lashed out at the ball and his shot went high over the bar. With Nairn getting well on top Grant Noble replaced Ryan Christie as the Broch tried to stem the home sides attacks. Nairn replaced John Cameron with Paul Macleod. Gregg Main was then booked for a foul on Noble. With a minute remaining a Nairn attack saw Urquhart pas the ball on to Wallace who found Kenny Mackenzie but Barbour did well to save his effort. The Broch had one last chance when Ryan Cowie s cross to the back post found Combe but his header fell wide of the target. A player with an abundance of talent that can play in mid-field or up front, and he has given Academy some great options. Sam is one of the hottest properties in the league and was the Sunday Post Young Player of the year in 2008/09 and repeated the feat in 2009/10. Holds the unique distinction amongst the current crop of SHFL players of having scored for Scotland both at Schoolboy and Semi Professional level. During his spell at Brora he played over 100 matches and became one of a select few who have been handed a captains armband whilst in their teens. Won the Michael McNeill trophy for the goal of the season last year with a sensational free-kick against Clachnacuddin in the Highland League Cup semi-final. Gary Manson - Consistent player who is now in his 16th season with the club. One of a select band of only 3 players who have over 400 competitive appearances for the club and in season he celebrated his testimonial season. Operates on the left, often as an attacking wing back. Played for Highland Amateur Cup winners Pentland United, and had a spell at Ross County before he came through the Academy U18's to become a regular in the 1st team. Plenty of pace and influential at set pieces. Previously selected for the Highland League North select. James McLean - Central midfielder signed by manager Gordon Connelly from Halkirk United in January Played several times as a trialist earlier in the season and caught the eye. A powerful young lad who will be keen to get some game-time before the end of this year s campaign. James Pickles - Played in the Orkney Cheese A League for Rendall FC. Initially caught the eye of Academy during a pre-season friendly against Orkney AFA. Scored his first goal for Academy in a 3-0 win in the North of Scotland Cup semi-final against Brora Rangers on the 12th September James really came onto his game in season and was awarded the Dot McLachlan Trophy for the most improved player. Now a regular in the starting eleven. David Allan - Ex Caithness United, Ross County youngster who signed for the Club from Elgin City. This talented young Thurso born striker has a tremendous amount of pace which takes him past defenders. Made a big impact 09/10 scoring 28 competitive goals and finishing joint 3rd top scorer in the league. His goal tally also won him the Academy Golden Boot award and the 09/10 supporters' player of the year. Had a quieter spell in 2010/11 with only 10 competitive goals but in season he was Academy's top scorer with 24 competitive goals to his name. Was selected as the Player's player of the year in season 2011/12. Academy fans are hoping for another season where he will once again terrorize opposition defences. Steven Anderson - Young forward from Lybster signed by Academy at the start of last season. A player with a great turn of speed that plays mainly on the right wing. Had trials with Crystal Palace as a youth. Played summer football for Golspie Stafford AFC and Lybster AFC. Helped Lybster AFC lift the Eain MacKintosh Cup. Has been a great addition to the squad strengthening our attacking options. Already a fans favourite and for his performances last season he picked up the Dot McLachlan trophy for the most improved player. Alan Hughes - Another product of the successful Caithness United/Wick Academy Youth link up. Alan is the son of Wick Academy Assistant Manager Richard Hughes. Like his dad he is a striker. Alan is a very pacy individual with terrific ball control and an eye for a pass and he has his Dad's prolific eye for goal which was very evident for the Under 17 team where he reached 20 plus goals. Plays summer football with Wick Groats and this year helped them lift the Highland Amateur Cup. Marc MacGregor - Signed in the summer of A striker who has come through the Caithness United and Wick Academy youth ranks. Played for CAFA side Staxigoe United. Has had limited opportunities thus far but started against Rothes in October and bagged 4 goals in that game. Gary Weir - 'Chuckie' is a raw never say die talent with a keen eye for goal. Made his debut at age 15 coming on as a substitute in a North of Scotland Cup tie away to Nairn in January Coming into his 14th full season with the Academy senior team and this is his testimonial year. Has scored some vital goals for the Club. Hit the net 15 times in season and in doing so at that time became the club's overall top goal scorer with over 100 competitive goals. He and Richard Macadie are now trading the tag of the Clubs top goal scorer on a monthly basis. With the ball at his feet defenders find him a tricky customer to deal with and in season he was the club's top goal scorer with 23 competitive goals to his name including a record haul of 8 in one match against Fort William in October (continued from page 8) if an upset was on the cards, but unfortunately Raith went on to win the game 4 2. Pre-season 2012 saw the club draw with Aberdeen 3 3 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0-0. In November 2015 the club won its first piece of silverware since joining the SHFL defeating Nairn County 6-2 in the final of the Menzies Distribution North of Scotland cup.

12 Highland league match centre Saturday 2 nd April 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Wick Academy 2-2 Brora Rangers 10-man Wick produced a stunning late comeback at Harmsworth Park to put a huge dent in Brora s title aspirations. The visitors roared out of the blocks and went ahead in the 6th minute when an Andrew Greig corner from the right found Grant Munro, his effort was cleared off the line but Dale Gillespie slammed home the rebound from 6 yards. Sean McCarthy did well to turn away a low drive from Martin Maclean, then produced an ever better save to keep out Munro s header. Ten minutes before the break Brora got their second, Zander Sutherland s free-kick finding Gillespie unmarked in the penalty box and he planted his header into the net. The Scorries suffered a huge blow in the 55th minute when Davie Allan reacted to a MacLean challenge on Steven Anderson and received a red card. Marc MacGregor came off the bench for the home side and he soon made an impact, his cross from the right picking out Richard Macadie, who headed home from eight yards out to reduce the deficit. Five minutes later they were level when Sam Mackay combined well with Steven Anderson, drove up the left wing, cut inside and squared across goal for MacGregor to tap home and send the home fans wild. Brora came agonisingly close to grabbing the winner at the death, but Steven Mackay was just inches away from getting on the end of a cross to the back post and Wick held for the point. Clachnacuddin 1-0 Forres Mechanics Martin Callum scored just before half-time as Clach edged out Forres in Inverness. The only goal of the game came in the 43rd minute when the Lilywhites midfielder got on the end of a free-kick to turn in a header at the far post. Forres were without eight players and struggled to find any continuity in their play, with Dachi Khutsishvili the liveliest member of their team. Clach missed some good chances in the second half to make certain of the victory and they were almost punished for their profligacy late on. Forres substitute Charlie Brown thought he had scored to snatch a point for his team, but he was ruled offside. Deveronvale 0-4 Keith Keith produced a dominant second half display to see off Deveronvale at Princess Royal Park, scoring three times in the opening ten minutes of the second period. Captain Michael Ewen struck twice with goals in the 48th and 50th minute, putting the visitors in control. Five minutes later Greg Smith s strike made it three to surely put the game beyond the Banff side. Sam Pugh completed the scoring with 20 minutes remaining to wrap up an impressive win for the Maroons, putting them level on points with Fraserburgh in tenth place in the league table. Formartine United 5-1 Huntly A double from Neil Gauld helped championship-chasing Formartine to a comfortable win over Huntly. The United striker broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when he turned a cross from Garry Wood into the net. Gauld quickly doubled his tally with a superb strike from 25 yards out and Calum Dingwall then scored just after the half-hour mark thanks to a cool finish after exchanging passes with Scott Barbour. Huntly soon pulled a goal back through a well-placed shot from the edge of the penalty area by Philip Duncan. Formartine scored early in the second half with a powerful close-range finish from Wood and their win was rounded off in the 72nd minute, as the away side s Mark Lawson turned the ball into his own net following a cross by Graeme Rodger. Inverurie Loco Works 1-1 Fraserburgh Inverurie fought back to earn a draw against Fraserburgh in an evenly-contested match. The Broch landed the first blow by breaking the deadlock with barely four minutes played. Steven Davidson did well to find space inside the Locos box and he placed a header low into the net. Fraserburgh then saw a shot from Courtney Cooper saved by Inverurie keeper Errol Watson, while at the other end, Daniel Crisp nodded the ball just over the crossbar. In the 57th minute Locos were awarded a penalty when Ryan Cowie fouled Colin Charlesworth and Andy Hunter calmly converted the resultant spot-kick. With the final kick of the match Martin Bavidge had the chance to win all three points for Inverurie, but he sent his shot over the bar. Lossiemouth 0-1 Buckie Thistle Iain MacRae s first-half goal gave Buckie a hard-fought win at Lossiemouth. A very physical game featured plenty of meaty challenges and few clear-cut chances, as the visitors kept up their hopes of a top-five finish. A bumpy pitch made it difficult for both teams to create any promising scoring opportunities. Lossie s best effort of the match came in the first half when a shot from Mark Hector produced a good save from Buckie keeper Greg Sim. It was no surprise that the only goal arrived from a set-piece, as a corner was headed into the net on the half-hour mark by Thistle s MacRae. The second half was a similarly tight affair summed up by the fact that the most notable incident was a collision between Shaun Wood and Lossie s Martin McMullan that left the Buckie player sporting a bandage on his head. Nairn County 3-1 Strathspey Thistle Nairn came from behind to defeat a determined Strathspey side at Station Park, with a second half double from Robbie Duncanson proving the difference in the end. Strathspey stunned the home side with the opening goal in the 16th minutes, Kenneth Mair latching onto a through ball and chipping the ball over the advancing Calum Antell. Nairn levelled matters four minutes from the break when Duncanson found Alan Pollock and he rifled an angled shot high past Daniel Hoban. Pollock almost grabbed his second early in the second half, but his acrobatic effort crashed off the post to safety. The home send went in front midway through the second half, Sam Urquhart s pass putting John Cameron through on goal and he was brought down by Hoban in the penalty area. Duncanson slotted home from the spot. Nairn sealed the points in injury time when Wayne Mackintosh played a great ball through to Duncanson and he fired home his second and Nairn s third from 16 yards. Rothes 0-3 Cove Rangers Cove won at bottom club Rothes to keep their title push on track. The visitors opened the scoring in the 22nd minute thanks to a drive from 20 yards out by Blair Yule that took a deflection off a defender on its way into the net. Cove had the majority of possession, but Rothes were well organised and frustrated their opponents. The away side doubled their advantage in the 80th minute when Stirling Smith finished a strong run forward by cutting the ball back to Dean Donaldson, who supplied the finish. Cove scored their third goal of the game in stoppage time at the end of the second half, as Jonny Smith slotted home a shot from 12 yards out having been set-up by a pass from Yule. The Aberdeen side now face a crucial game against title rivals Formartine in Inverurie on Wednesday night. Wednesday 6 th April 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League

13 Highland league match centre Cove Rangers took a massive step towards another Highland League title with a single-goal victory over Formartine at Harlaw Park. A Daryl Nicol goal three minutes into the second half was enough to separate the two sides, keeping Cove level on points with Brora at the top of the table after the Cattachs also won at Forres. Formartine now lie six points behind in third place in the table, but with two games in hand on leaders Brora. Cove Rangers 1-0 Formartine United Cove: Daryl Nicol (48) Forres Mechanics 0-3 Brora Rangers Brora: Zander Sutherland (47), Steven Mackay (50), Scott Graham (75) Nairn County 1-1 Fraserburgh Nairn: Gregg Main (38) Fraserburgh: Ryan Christie (2) Saturday 9 th April 2016 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Deveronvale 0-0 Huntly Deveronvale and Huntly shared the spoils in a real end-ofseason affair at Princess Royal Park. Blair Johnston almost opened the scoring midway through the first half, but his header went just wide of goal. Former Huntly forward James Duguid came closest for the home side when his strike from outside the penalty area crashed down off the crossbar to safety. Stuart Grant kept the visitors in it early in the second half, saving twice from Liam Forbes then diving at the feet of Craig Simpson as he ran through on goal. Huntly stopper Grant denied Duguid again late on and substitute Nathan Ross missed the chance to grab the winner when he fired Gary Harris cutback wide of the post. Formartine United 5-1 Clachnacuddin Formartine United kept the title race alive with a thumping win over Clach at North Lodge Park. The home side got off to an excellent start with the opening goal coming in the ninth minute. Garry Wood beating his man and curling the ball past Aiden Macdonald. Formartine made it two five minutes later, Paul Lawson finding Cammy Keith with a tremendous 60-yard pass and he ran through to slot home from a tight angle. Number three came in the 28th minute, Jamie Michie s cross was deflected to the far post and Max Berton slid in to turn the ball home. Stuart Leslie pulled one back ten minutes later, slamming home the rebound after Ian Penwright s flick was saved by Andy Reid. The home side got their fourth after 66 minutes, Calum Dingwall s cross from the left finding Callum Bagshaw and he tapped home from close range. Sub Neil Gauld completed the scoring with four minutes to go, lifting the ball past MacDonald after Neil McVitie s cross fell kindly to him from close range. Forres Mechanics 2-2 Strathspey Thistle Lee Fraser got Forres off to a flyer when he fired home the opening goal after just five minutes. A hard-fought affair sprang to life midway through the second half when trialist Michael Mackenzie equalised for the visitors. The home side got themselves back in front just four minutes later with a fine goal from Craig McGovern. However, visitors Strathspey fought straight back and grabbed another equaliser through Kenneth Mair. Neither side were able to grab a winner from the chances which came their way in the last fifteen minutes and the spoils were shared. Fort William 0-4 Cove Rangers Cove Rangers only need one point from their last two matches to clinch the Highland League title, after a comfortable win over Fort William at Grant Park in Lossiemouth. They took the lead after only two minutes when Connor Scully got down the right flank and his cross picked out Jonny Smith in the middle to sweep the ball home. Jamie Watt got the second in the 13th minute, latching onto a through ball and placing his shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Scully was in rampant form for the visitors and his first-time lob crashed off the crossbar, before another cross-shot was palmed onto the bar by Douglas MacLennan. Blair Yule also came close before the break with a blistering strike from the edge of the penalty box which was tipped over by MacLennan. Two minutes into the second half, Harry Milne played a ball in to Watt, who created space for himself before dinking the ball over MacLennan into the net. Number four came in the 64th minute, Sam Burnett with a low left-foot curling shot into the corner of the net. Rothes 1-5 Wick Academy Wick scored five in a convincing win at Rothes, with two first half efforts from Richard Macadie. Academy grabbed the opener after a scrappy start in the 16th minute when Marc MacGregor fired in from eight yards. The home side equalised just three minutes later, Jamie Mackay converting a Ricky Henderson cross to put them back on level terms. Macadie then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, slotting home from the penalty spot in the 35th minute, then adding his second and Wick s third goal three minutes later with a cracking strike from 25 yards. Steven Anderson poked in goal number four from close range ten minutes into the second half to surely put the game beyond Rothes. Substitute Ryan Campbell completed the scoring with his first goal for the Scorries fifteen minutes from the end, heading in a cross from Gary Manson. Turriff United 0-1 Inverurie Loco Works Locos edged out Turriff in a closely contested game at The Haughs, with Andy Hunter scoring the only goal in the second half. The first real chance came early on for Turriff, Leszek Nowosielski curling an effort against the crossbar with keeper Errol Watson beaten. At the other end, Andy Hunter s free kick was spilled by Kevin Main, but he managed to gather the loose ball before the Locos forwards could pounce to score. Inverurie scored the opener midway through the second half, Andy Hunter getting on the end of a cross to tap home at the back post. Turriff pushed for an equaliser in the last 20 minutes, but Craig MacAskill rifled over the crossbar when well placed and Chris Herd s late free-kick flew just over. 23 Match SEASON report BY SEASON vs. turriff 1974/75 united Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Wednesday 13 th April 2016, Fraserburgh v Turriff United, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh Fraserburgh started well and a Ryan Cowie corner clipped the top of the bar. Graham Johnston then swung in a dangerous free kick on six minutes which Kevin Main punched clear and when the ball came back into the box Bryan Hay headed it across goal but Marc Dickson was in an offside position. A minute later Johnston fed Dean Cowie who cut inside and fired a shot which curled away from the goal. The same combination fashioned another chance for the home side on 18 minutes but this time the Broch midfielder s effort was blocked. On 19 minutes another Johnston set piece from the left caused panic in the Turriff rearguard and when the ball eventually found its way to Stuart Taylor he saw his effort blocked and cleared to safety. Turriff were not showing much as an attacking force but did eventually have a chance on 23 minutes when a long ball forward found Nicholas Gray who beat Bryan Hay at the edge of the box but couldn t get his shot on target. The Broch had a guilt edged chance to take the lead on 26 minutes when Willie West was pulled back in the box by Allen MacKenzie and referee Chris Phillips pointed to the spot. However Main pulled off a good save to keep out West s spot kick. West had another chance on 35 minutes when a long ball behind the Turriff defence saw the Broch player advance into the penalty area but he shot tamely straight at Main. Another long ball forward caused confusion in the Turriff back four on 42 minutes but Dickson could only blaze the ball high over the bar. Just before the break Gray picked the ball up outside the Broch penalty area on the left and cut inside his marker to fire a shot across Joe Barbour and just wide of the goal. Half Time: Fraserburgh 0-0 Turriff United The early exchanges at the start of the second half were pretty scrappy with neither team able to create any meaningful chances. That changed on 59 minutes when Russell McBride was harshly penalized for a foul on Leszek Nowosielski and Lewis Davidson stepped up to curl the free kick from 20 yards out into the top left hand corner past Barbour. Turriff almost had a chance to make it 2-0 when Gray had only to slide the ball across to the unmarked David Booth but his weak pass was easily cut out by McBride. On 72 minutes Gray burst into the Fraserburgh box and fired a shot at goal which was deflected wide for a corner. Two minutes later Ryan Cowie s free kick from the right wing was headed clear to Johnston and when he returned the ball into the box it eventually found its way to Dickson but his header was straight at Main. Johnston then had a free kick after a foul on West which he fired in but once again main was equal to the task. Next to try his luck was Steven Davidson, on as a substitute, who picked the ball up in midfield, controlled it and fired in a shot which went wide of goal. West was then sent off for his second bookable offence by ref Phillips. Turriff were hitting the Broch on the break as the home side pushed for an equaliser and Booth had a chance which he fired straight at Barbour. With two minutes left Turriff broke away and Gray found Booth but once again Barbour blocked the effort and Johnston who had tracked back cleared the ball. The Broch had one final chance in the 90 th minute when Ryan Cowie s free kick was cleared for a corner which found Johnston but his shot was blocked. Full Time: Fraserburgh 0-1 Turriff United Fraserburgh: Joe Barbour, Marc Dickson, Russell McBride, Ryan Cowie, Stuart Taylor, Bryan Hay, Dean Cowie, William West, Aidan Combe (Paul Campbell 63), Graham Johnston, Michael Rae (Steven Davidson 80). Jimmy Brown got the recognition he deserved with a star pic in the Green Final. Jim puts Broch back on the Soccer Map. The headline said. His own comments were I think the Broch are on the brink of a major breakthrough in North of Scotland soccer Away to Rothes in the first league game the Broch were 2-0 down after 30 minutes but Hunter and an Esslemont (pen) made it all square at the break. After the turn around the Broch ran riot with goals from Hunter (2), Fraser and Noble to finish up 6-4 winners. Wednesday 14 th August is one of those dates etched in Broch fans memories. At a rain soaked Recreation Park the Black and Whites gave their deadly rivals a 10-0 hiding in the League Cup!! Hunter opened the scoring on 13 minutes and Duthie made it 2-0 after 26 mins. It was 3-0 with Hunter scoring again and Bowie made it 4 after 34 minutes. Esslemont made it 5 on 39 mins and Noble grabbed a sixth just before half time. The second half was more of the same with Noble making it 7-0 on 50 mins the Bowie scored twice to complete his hat-trick and Make the score 9-0. Fraser completed the rout 4 minutes from time to make the final score Peterhead 0-10 Fraserburgh. The teams that night were: Peterhead: Connell, Ewan, Rennie, D. Summers, Sievwright, Coutts, McKenzie, English, Watson, Cheyne, Beattie. Sub: Cameron. Fraserburgh: Forsyth, Cardno, Newlands, Stephen, McCann, Duthie, Fraser, Noble, Esslemont, Hunter, Bowie. Subs: Gammack, Sharp. That was followed up by back to back 2-1 wins over Huntly, firstly in the League at Bellslea with Bobby Fraser and Bertie Bowie scoring and then four days later at Christie Park in the League Cup John Towsie Duthie and Brian Newlands did the damage this time. A nil nil draw at Clach was not a bad result as you will find out later but a 3-0 reverse at home to Keith put paid to any hopes of a return to the League Cup Final. Next up were Buckie in the Qualifying Cup and Bowie and Hunter scored late on to put the Broch through despite Esslemont s missed penalty. The same pair were at it again a week later when Hunter notched a hat-trick in a 5-0 romp at home to Lossiemouth with Bowie adding a double. That should have been the perfect build up for the 2 nd round of the Qualifying Cup at Elgin and Hunter put the Broch ahead early only for Gray to level. Nine minutes after the break Gray made it 2-1 but Esslemont tied things up on 64 mins. What happened next turned the game on its head. Fordyce played the ball through to Hunter who looked a mile offside but he rounded Lawrie and thinking he was off instead of rolling the ball into an empty net he chipped it over the bar. The referee gave a goal kick and the chance was gone. Sandison scored with 5 minutes left to send Elgin through 3-2. The defeat left the Broch free to concentrate on the league and they took full advantage winning their next four games. First up was a trip to Buckie where Hunter notched a double and Esslemont also scored in a 3-1 win. That was followed with a home match against Nairn and Bobby Fraser s double was added to by Esslemont and Bowie to make the score 4-2. Rothes came to the Bellslea and were sent home with their tails between their legs after a 7-0 thumping. Bowie scored four with Hunter, Esslemont and Fraser all pitching in with strikes of their own. The last game in October saw Keith visiting Bellslea. Bobby Fraser scored twice and Rex Hunter was also on the scoresheet with an own goal rounding things off. The Broch s fine run came to an end the following week when Ross County dished out a 4-0 defeat, but they were still up near the top. Next was a 2-2 draw at Nairn with Hunter and Fraser scoring. Two 3-1 wins in a row at Bellslea got the title bid back on track with Buckie Thistle being the first victims thanks to Brian Newlands, Bertie Bowie and Bobby Fraser. Keith went the same way as Bowie, Hunter and Jimmy Noble all netted for the Black & Whites. Huntly put a spanner in the works with a 2-0 victory but December started with back to back games against Forres the first of which was at the Bellslea with Hunter, Noble and Bowie again on the scoresheet. The following week the Broch were even better running out 6-0 winners at the Mosset with Bowie and Esslemont both scoring doubles and Noble and Stephen also chipping in to set the Broch up for the Derby double.

25 SEASON BY SEASON 1974/75 Peterhead were out for revenge for the 10-0 drubbing. Watson drew first blood for the visitors after Forsyth let the ball squirm through his legs. Noble levelled things on 23 when he slammed the ball past McHattie from the edge of the box but Watson put the Bloo Toon back in front 3 minutes later. Bobby Fraser squared the match just before half time and the Broch twice hit the wood work in the second half but couldn t find that elusive goal before Grant won it for the visitors with 3 minutes left. The teams were: Broch: Forsyth, Roger, Newlands, Hunter, McCann, Duthie, Fraser, Noble, Esslemont, Stephen, Bowie. Sub: Fordyce. Peterhead: McHattie, Rennie, Rhynd, Krukowski, Sievwright, Beattie, Watson, Styles, Grant, Horn, Cheyne. Subs: Summers, Park. Referee: L.J.S. Officer The game the following week was just as controversial. Peterhead had three shots cleared off the line in the first 20 minutes and then against the run of play the Broch took the lead through Esslemont on 25 mins. The same player thought he had put the Broch 2 up from a free kick but the ref ruled it was indirect. Fraser then scored the simplest of Goals as McHattie and Sievwright left the ball to each other and Bobby nipped in to score the Broch s second much to the delight of the large travelling support. Summers pulled one back for the home side with a 30 yarder but Esslemont made it 3-1 shortly after. Grant gave Peterhead some hope from the spot on 79 mins but the Broch held firm to win 3-2. The Broch headed into the New Year with a visit to Elgin City which ended in a 2-1 win for the visitors which sent them to the top of the table. The scorers that day were Gibby Stephen and Bertie Bowie. That was followed by a 3-1 win at home to Vale with Hunter netting a brace and Bobby Fraser the other. A trip to Dingwall yielded a point with Charlie Esslemont and Bertie Bowie scoring. Brora then visited the Bellslea and were sent packing thanks to a rare Eddie Gammack double and further strikes by Bertie Bowie, Bobby Fraser, Charlie Esslemont and Jimmy Noble. The Aberdeenshire Cup got under way with the Broch having a home tie against Aberdeen University. Goals from Hunter, Bowie and Noble were more than enough to put the Broch through to a semi final against Deveronvale. Before that Caley visited the Bellslea on League business and Noble s goal was only enough for a share of the spoils. The Cup match saw Vale victorious by 1-0 through McBain s goal but the following week the Broch went to Banff and hammered the same side 5-1 with Bowie (2), Hunter, McKenzie and Noble all on the goal trail. Those games were sandwiched in between a 2-1 home defeat to Elgin City in which Dave McKenzie scored for the Broch. Brora Rangers were next up for the Broch who had seen title rivals Keith beat them 5-0 so the Broch had to win to keep up the pressure. They managed a 6-2 victory with Rex Hunter scoring four goals and Jimmy Noble and Bobby Fraser chipping in with one each. A home match against Clachnacuddin was the Broch s last hope but despite an enthralling match showcasing all that was god in the Highland League the 3-3 scoreline ended Broch s hopes of a long awaited championship. Bertie Bowie, Brian McCann and Rex Hunter scored for the Broch. The league campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat at Telford Street with Dave McKenzie on the scoresheet. This saw the Broch finish in third place four points behind runners-up Keith who lost out to Clach by a single point for the title. The Broch also relinquished their grip on the Bells Cup with a quarter final tie at Banff against Deveronvale ending all square 2-2, Jimmy Nobel and Bobby Fraser scoring for the Broch but the Vale won 3-2 on penalties. The Amateur League was still going strong at the time with the table at the middle of May looking like this Team Pld W D L Pts Broch Centre Redburn Invercairn Sandhaven Toolworks St Combs Rosehearty Parkhill The surprise news that came in the close season was that Brian McCann was hanging up his boots and taking over as manager. With three new faces in the squad the team would almost pick itself. Goalkeeper Charlie Gray (Rothes), Murdo Watson (Peterhead) and Billy Massie (Youth Centre) took the squad size to 18 players. The Broch had a number of prolific scorers in the side at the time with Hunter on 23 goals and Bowie four behind on 19. Young Bobby Fraser was on 15 having scored 25 the year before which was not bad for someone who had stepped up from the amateurs. He got the nickname road runner as he was so quick off the mark!! Fraser was on hand to score twice in a 3-2 defeat of Lossiemouth with Charlie Esslemont also scoring but three defeats on the trot all but ended the Broch s title challenge. Inverness Thistle won both matches first at Kingsmills and then at the Bellslea 3-0 with Charlie Duncan notching one of the goals, the others coming from a McCann own goal and Fraser to complete a miserable afternoon for the home side.

26 FRASERBURGH TURRIFF UNITED FC PLAYER MATCH PROFILES REPORT Joe Barbour, Goalkeeper, Age 22: Joe is a local loon with a lot of promise. He has made several first team appearances and has also been loaned out at Junior level to gain valuable experience. He played an integral part in winning the Aberdeenshire Cup in the last two seasons and has now taken over No.1 spot at the club in his own right. Appearances: 43 Edward Flinn, Goalkeeper, Age 18 A young goalkeeper who joined the club last season having been on the books at St. Johnstone. Ed has featured mainly at U20 level this season and made his 1 st team debut as a replacement for Joe Barbour in the recent Highland League match against Formartine United. Appearances: 1 Paul Leask, Goalkeeper, Age 26: This is Paul s seventh season with the club taking over the No 1 shirt when Billy Gordon retired. Has now made over 200 appearances for the club and is an excellent shot stopper. Signed from Peterhead Paul was the Players Player of the Year in Out injured all of last season but back to his best in his 5 appearances this season. Appearances: 218 Cameron Buchan, Defender, Age 20: Cammy is in a similar position to Joe having made several first team appearances but mostly loaned out to Juniors clubs. He is very composed on the ball and good in the air and is an excellent dead ball taker. Scored his first senior goal for the club against Lossiemouth in the League Cup last week. Appearances: 22; Goals: 1 Russell McBride, Defender/Striker, Age 37: Signed for the Broch 19 years ago but spent two seasons at Elgin City between that time. As club captain Russell is a great leader and one who the younger lads look up to. A tough tackling defender Russell is also very skilful and chips in with the odd goal at set pieces. Has now clocked up over 550 appearances and lifted the Aberdeenshire Cup at Christie Park this season where he was name man of the match. Appearances: 565; Goals: 94 Ryan Christie, Defender, Age 30: Ryan rejoined the club when Kris Hunter took over as manager and brings a wealth of experience and skill to the centre of defence/midfield. He suffered a serious injury two seasons ago and slowly made his way back to fitness playing twelve times last season. His thunderbolt against Inverurie Locos put the Broch on their way to victory in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final this season. Appearances: 279; Goals: 38 Marc Dickson, Defender, Age 28: Peterhead lad, Marc is one of the most senior players at the club now. He is regarded as one of the best full back/defensive midfield players in the league with his ball winning and passing ability. His lung bursting runs down the right wing create lots of chances for his teammates and he pops up with the odd goal as well. Marc has now made over 350 appearances for the club. Appearances: 366; Goals: 15 Courtney Cooper, Defender, Age 21: Courtney burst into the 1st team five seasons ago making his debut at Rothes and hasn t looked back. He can play at full back or in midfield, composed on the ball & a good passer. Courtney s opportunities have been limited this season due to work commitments but he has scored some crucial goals for the club and clocked up over 150 appearances. Appearances: 160; Goals: 26 Brian Hay, Defender, Age 26: Another young Broch loon who has become an invaluable member of the first team. Bryan is still relatively young but is very assured on the ball and calm under pressure and has the pace to keep up with most forwards. Been with the club for 9 years and has amassed over 250 appearances and notched his 11 th goal against Turriff in the League match this season. Hayzer is rated as one of the finest centre halves in the Highland League by his Manager. Appearances: 290; Goals: 11 Ryan Cowie, Defender, Age 24: Ryan has been with the club for three seasons now having been signed from Turriff United. He is the younger brother of Mark and Dean Cowie and has a bright future ahead of him. He can play wide on either flank but more often than not turns out at left full back. His delivery from the left and from corners and free kicks cause many dangerous situations for opponents and led to the winner against Turriff in the Scottish Cup tie this season. Appearances: 138; Goals: 11 Stuart Taylor, Defender, Age 22: One of Mark Cowie s close season signings Stuart has previously played for Peterhead and Turriff United. Mainly operates as a right back although he can play at centre half as well. Stuart has already impressed with his defensive qualities and sure to feature prominently in the first team this season having started the recent games at Inverurie & Lossiemouth. Appearances: 18; Goals: 0 William West, Midfielder, Age 28: Willie is an assured midfield player with an eye for goal having notched 17 last season from an advanced role

27 TURRIFF UNITED MATCH REPORT Fraserburgh fc player profiles behind the strikers. He is another player who despite his young age has amassed over 400 appearances for the club. He has also scored over 100 goals for the club during that time. He has a great range of passing and is excellent in the air can also adapt to a defensive role as he has done in recent games. Appearances: 422; Goals: 114 Dean Cowie, Midfielder, Age 29: Experienced campaigner Dean has rejoined the club after three seasons with Peterhead the last of which was blighted by injury. Dean has a great array of passes and his all action, combative style and experience will be vital as the Broch look to challenge for more honours. On his day there is no better midfielder in the Highland League. Appearances: 58; Goals: 11 Graham Johnston, Forward, Age 29: Graham played for Scotland Schoolboys and has the capability to play in any position. One of the Broch s and the Highland League s best players on his day. Graham is the leading scorer at the club and has a happy knack of notching vital goals just like his double in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final victory over Buckie Thistle last season. He is one of the Broch s main threats from set pieces setting up Steven Davidson s clincher against Locos in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final. Appearances: 425; Goals: 156 Grant Noble, Forward, Age 28: Former Deveronvale and Turriff United player Grant joined towards the tail end 2012/3 season. Despite injury problems he featured on a regular basis last season scoring 3 times. He will be remembered for the vital winner against Montrose in the Scottish Cup two years ago. Grant has played a prominent role in the Broch s fine start to the season scoring a belter at Turriff in the Highland League match. Appearances: 85; Goals: 14 Michael Rae, Midfielder, Age 28: Michael has rejoined the club from Maud Juniors recently having been at Fraserburgh as a youth. He has been instrumental in Maud s challenge for honours in recent season and will bring experience and energy to the Broch side having captained the juniors at Maud. Made a scoring debut against Rothes in his second spell with the club. Appearances: 24; Goals: 1 Steven Davidson, Forward, Age 21: Steven actually made his debut against Nairn four seasons ago scoring in that game. He was farmed out to the Juniors to continue his development. Scored eight times last season from 27 appearances, he is good in the air and has a great shot on him as he has demonstrated notching several important goals none more so that the second goal in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final this season. Scored his first hat-trick for the club against Rothes in the Highland League match. Appearances: 83; Goals: 18 Aidan Combe, Forward, Age 18: Joined the club last summer having previously played for Keith at under 17 level. It was during a match against the Broch where he came to the club s attention with his attacking wing play and pace causing all sorts of problems for the Bellslea side. Scored his first goal for the club at Keith last April and notched his first goal at Bellslea Park against Rothes which was also the club s 7000th. Aidan has scored in each of his last three appearances for the club. Appearances: 46; Goals: 5 Paul Campbell, Forward, Age 23: Paul is a forward and has joined the Broch from Maud. He has been on the scoresheet regularly in the junior ranks over the past two seasons at FC Stoneywood and notched his first goal for the Broch at Lossiemouth in the League Cup from the penalty spot and has notched another two since then. He is good in the air and has blistering pace. Appearances: 12; Goals: 4 Peter Alexander Bruce, Forward, Age 25: P-A signed for the Broch on a permanent basis from Peterhead FC at the start of 2013/14 season having had several loan spells with the club. He is a tricky player, with two good feet and plenty of pace. He has a great shot on him and has found the net 38 times including the winner in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final last season. He has recently returned to the squad after being away due to work commitments. Appearances: 98; Goals: 38 Mark Cowie, Manager, Age 30: Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to pastures new in April. His experience and calmness from his playing days will be of great assistance to the younger members of the playing squad. He is sure to bring fresh ideas to the team whilst staying true to the club s philosophy of bringing through young talent. Has already led the club to success in the Aberdeenshire Cup this season and the win over Inverurie Locos at the start of February sees the club reach a second successive Aberdeenshire Shield Final. Appearances: 242; Goals: 25 Mark is ably assisted by James Duthie who has a wealth of experience at Highland League level, Alex Mair who has been on the Broch s coaching staff for several years now and new faces Steve Doak goalkeeping coach, Brent Bruce fitness coach, Ross Cardno club physio and Leanne Reid assistant physio. There are also two community coaches Shelley Sutherland & Graeme Noble who play a tremendous role with the young age groups.
