3 CHAIRMAN S WELCOME Today, we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Forres Mechanics to Bellslea Park for our William Hill Scottish Cup tie. There is absolutely no doubt that this afternoon's match is the biggest of the season for both clubs. I will never tire of saying how important the Scottish Cup is to clubs of our level. We won t win it, but it brings something to a club when you get a decent run. The community gets together in a way that it doesn t in other competitions and the finances that could be generated are great. It is disappointing that we have a fellow SHFL Club as opposition but that s the luck of the draw. The further as many clubs can get in the competition the better it is for the Highland League as a whole so avoiding each other in the early rounds allows that to happen. Thirteen is the maximum amount of SHFL clubs we could get through to the next round and hopefully we are one of them. In all honesty, I don t think we will have that amount through but I do think we have a great chance of getting into double figures. The least said about last season s debacle the better but I know for a fact the players are keen to make amends for that so there should be no need for any motivation today. The one thing we can guarantee is that we will definitely be playing at Mosset Park next week but we can only hope from our point of view that we go there having won the tie today. 4 MANAGER S NOTES The guys produced another good win against an Inverurie Locos side that had been on a good run themselves. I thought the first half was pretty even but we dominated the second half, how did you assess the game from the dugout? I would agree with that. I thought the guys looked sluggish in the first half which is understandable given the spell we are going through with 3 midweek games in a row. Locos probably had the better of the half but they didn't break us down and create much. We scored an excellent goal against the run of play but I think you saw a more familiar Broch performance in the second half where we were hungry and closed down at every opportunity and when we had the ball we played at a high tempo and created plenty of chances. Inverurie came into the game on a high however I felt we controlled the game well and got another valuable three points to keep us in a good position. They followed that up with an impressive win over Lossiemouth to keep the run going scoring some great goals into the bargain especially the last one where we held onto possession for several minutes before creating the chance for Bryan Hay to score. How pleased were you with the afternoon's work? Again I was very happy with how the game turned out. We controlled the game from minute one until the last whistle and never really looked in any real danger of losing the game. Greg continued his recent run of form with a great finish to open the scoring and then we scored a well worked goal from Gary Harris again. Harris got his second to put us 3 up in the second half. I was able to then get players changed out and was able to get Giz back on the pitch. It was good to see him back as he has had a tough time of late with injuries etc but hopefully he is now clear of them and can move forward again. He got back on to the scoresheet which I was delighted with and put us in a very commanding position. We let in a slack goal from a counter but the guys didn't panic and finished it off in style through Bryan Hay after a spell of possession where we must have made passes before it landed at Hayzer's feet in the box. All in all a professional performance with another great 3 points We now turn our attention to the Scottish Cup with a match against Forres Mechanics. Firstly how important is it for a club like Fraserburgh to enjoy a good cup run? The Scottish Cup is a great competition to be involved in. There is a certain buzz around the club when these matches come around. You know that there is a possibility of a big tie if you can manage to get passed the first two or three rounds. We were lucky a couple of years back to get to play at Falkirk which was a great occasion for everyone involved however we let the club and the town down last year when we were knocked out by Gala. We really want to do well in this cup and I'm sure the players and me and my staff will do all we can to get the result required to stay in the cup. Secondly Forres are renowned as a physical team but they have some very good players in their squad and are capable of playing good football. How difficult a tie will this be? It is probably a draw which neither club wanted to be fair. Forres are a very good side who play to their strengths very well. Everyone knows that they are a physical outfit but people sometimes forget that they have some good players in their squad who like to play in the likes of Duncanson, Soane and Pollock amongst others. They will have done there homework on us as we have on them but we know enough about them to expect a battle. Like every other game we go into if we want to win then we will have to perform at our best level as Forres will be coming down looking for a win. We are at home which is one thing all clubs look for in a draw so I'm sure we will have the usual great Broch support behind us which hopefully will help the lads get the desired result. All the Best, Mark

5 TODAY S TEAMLINES

6 We had another solid performance on Saturday against a well set up defensive Lossie, we knew they d be tough to break down but once we got the goal it settled us down and we managed to win comfortably in the end. CAPTAIN S CORNER Young Greg has definitely grasped his chance in the starting 11, he s been extremely patient and continually worked hard in training so we re delighted he s now a regular in the team. He s not only 1 of our best players lately he s also chipped in with 3 goals in 4 games, his work effort is 2 nd to none and it s great to see him in the team. Pedro was also due some thanks from the Lossie game, he made 3 world class saves that kept our 2 goal lead intact, probably 3 of the best saves I ve ever seen within the Highland League. He s been top notch since we ve signed him and will only get better as he gains experience. We re at home to Forres today in the Scottish Cup which is probably 1 of the toughest draws we could ve had, they have been in good form this season and have quality within their squad, again we ll need to be at our best to progress. We re very eager to win the game and get into the next round as we let everyone down last season with our poor performance at Gala Fairydean. The Scottish Cup is huge for every Highland League club and we really want to do well this season, we all remember the away game at Falkirk and how it felt to play against 1 of the best teams in the country so we want to be in that position once again. Enjoy the game and hopefully see you in the next round. Cheers, Boom

After discussing the logistical matters, the Scottish Football Association blessed the venture and The Highland Football League was born. By February 7th 1894, after undergoing the teething problems of a new venture and having lost one of the original teams from the fixture list, the League reported a surplus of five pounds. This rocky first season was concluded, and Thistle became the first champions of the Highland Football League. The league consisted of seven teams in , those of Thistle, Caley, Clachnacuddin, Forres Mechanics, Union, Citadel and Camerons. From this strong base, the League has gone from strength to strength culminating in the championships where the league contained eighteen clubs - those of Elgin City, Cove Rangers, Lossiemouth, Caley, Ross County, Huntly, Clachnacuddin, Inverness Thistle, Buckie Thistle, Fraserburgh, Deveronvale, Keith, Brora Rangers, Peterhead, Rothes, Fort William, Forres Mechanics and Nairn County. Having now survived over one hundred years, and the many obstacles history has placed in its path, the Highland Football League has become a part of the Northern Spirit, displaying the strength of commitment to the game from the meeting rooms, the players and from the supporters who loyally support their chosen team. Although the Highland Football League is a small speck in the increasingly global world of football, it is a league with a special character, a sound commitment to the game, exceptional skill, strong pride and an integral part of the communities within which it is a part. 9 FORRES MECHANICS CAPTAIN S CORNER FOOTBALL CLUB Why Mechanics? There has been much debate over the years and many interesting theories as to why the club has a unique title. Some suggest the name is linked to the Mechanics Institute (now the Town Hall). Others suggest the name came from the many men who came from the South to work on the new railway line being constructed. To find the best authority on the origins of the name we need to look at the writings of Colin G. Watson (Many will know him as 'Yankee'). In 1984 Colin published a very insightful and well researched book, 'FORRES MECHANICS The First Hundred Years'. In the book Colin suggests the following: Despite being the oldest Association Football Club in the North of Scotland, Forres Mechanics were not at the time of their formation the oldest club in the town of Forres, there having been in existence for fully two years the St. Lawrence Club. Colin goes on to explain that some members of this club appeared to be out of favour and failed to feature in games against local rivals. It would seem this fact so outraged the members it prompted them to break away and set up their own club. So in October 1884 a meeting was convened and those present duly decided to set up a new club. Having taken the decision thoughts turned to a name for the club. Colin continues: The only common factor between those present (at the meeting) was that they were all "Mechanics". This did not mean that they all tinkered with the latest Ford or Rover model off the assembly line as these were still far in the future. They were simply, as defined in the Oxford English Dictionary "people who are employed in manual occupation; and craftsmen". And so in October 1884 Forres Mechanics were established. Tom Cook: Whilst not a great deal is known about the men who founded the Mechanics we do know that Mr Tom Cook had the honour of being named the first Captain. Along with the two men who initiated the breakaway from St Lawrence, William Boyne and Paul Martin, Cook led the team into their first competitive match in November 1884 at the Haughs in Elgin, the team earning a respectable draw. Cook also led the team in the battle for supremacy in Forres, scoring in one of the two matches against St. Lawrence, the Mechanics coming out on top with a win and a draw. The matches were played at St Lawrence and Mechanics home game was held in the Burdshaugh area of Forres. The War Years: Forres Mechanics were a founder member of the Highland Football League and have played in the league continuously but for a few seasons at the start of the 1900's and occasionally during war time. Indeed due to the Great War the Highland League was suspended in Feb 1915 and did not reconvene until the 1919/20 season. In October 1939 the league was again abandoned with the outbreak of WWII. The Highland Emergency and Central Highland leagues were set up that year but were not completed. Football did not return to the North in league form until 1946/7 with Peterhead dominating the post war years. Moving Home: Forres Mechanics first started playing at Mosset Park in Previously they played at fields at Burdshaugh and Greshop. Since then the ground has changed twice. Bumper crowds at games in the late 1940's prompted the club to improve Mosset Park. In 1948 the club had purchased a hangar, we assume surplus to requirements after the war. The idea was to use the hanger to provide new seating for around 500 people. Discussions at committee meetings eventually led to the club agreeing to a more substantial structure. It was agreed to spend a quite considerable sum of 3000 on concrete based wooden stand. Committee reports suggested that 2000 had by this time already been raised and a shrewd deal was also done to sell on the hangar for 500 giving a 400 profit! The resulting structure and improvements to the entrance and perimeter made Mosset Park the envy of many clubs although when the time came for change again in 1986 the old stand had definitely served its purpose. In the early 1980's permission was given by the Government to construct a bypass around the town. There had been much debate by local interests including shopkeepers and those who wanted to preserve the 'Common' land to the North of the Town around Bogton and the 'Walkies', a popular walking area alongside the railway line. As plans showed the route of the bypass dissecting the existing ground and stand at Mosset Park the club too had a fair interest in the proposals! In the end agreement was reached and for Forres Mechanics this meant the relocation of the ground some 500 meters to the south-east. If the new stand built in 1948 was the envy of visiting clubs then one can only imagine the envy of visitors from The relocated Mosset Park featured a brand new stand a perimeter wall new entrances with access at either end of the ground and facilities including board rooms, and a social club. The new ground was at the time the finest in the Highland League and given the League Championship and North of Scotland Cup success the previous two years marked a big high in the history of the club. The new stand was opened with a game against Heart of Midlothian with the legendary BBC commentator David Francey the guest announcer. The information is taken from Colin's book 'Forres Mechanics - The First Hundred Years' published in The book ends in the Centenary year with Forres winning the Highland League Cup, the first silverware since 1967.

10 MATCH REPORT CAPTAIN S INVERURIE CORNER LOCO WORKS The Broch continued their winning run with a fine victory over an in form Inverurie Locos side which had won 5 league games in a row. Paul Young netted his first goal for the home side with a cracking half volley and Gary Harris kept up his impressive strike rate with a second after the break. Andrew Hunter pulled one back for Locos before Paul Campbell s injury time penalty sealed all three points for the Burgh. Peter Tait regained his place in between the sticks after his one game ban with Edward Flinn dropping to the bench. Lewis Davidson replaced Marc Dickson who picked up a knock in the Fort William game and there were also recalls for Michael Rae, Paul Young and William West who replaced Paul Campbell and Ryan Sargent both of whom were listed as substitutes and Jamie Beagrie who was away due to work commitments. The first chance fell to Locos on 6 minutes when the Broch lost the ball in midfield and Neil McLean found Andrew Hunter on the left side of the penalty area but his shot flew across the six yard box and just wide of Peter Tait s goal. Two minutes later Ryan Cowie s cross picked out Gary Harris at the edge of Locos penalty box and he laid it off to Lewis Davidson but the full back couldn t get any purchase into his effort and Ryan Booth made a straightforward save. The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes with a cracker from Paul Young. Greg Buchan crossed to the back post where Lewis Davidson challenged for the high ball and when it dropped into the path of Paul Young he swiveled and smashed a half volley from 16 yards into the bottom left hand corner past the despairing Locos keeper. The Broch looked to increase their lead and seven minutes later William West played the ball down the right channel to Gary Harris and he tried to lob Ryan Booth from outside the box but his effort drifted just wide of the post. Neither team were creating chances as both defences stood firm but a rush of blood by Peter Tait almost cost the Broch on 37 minutes when he raced out of his area to clear a Ryan Broadhurst clearance but misjudged the bounce and was thankful that Ryan Christie was on hand to clear the danger. A minute later Greg Buchan intercepted a cross field pass and raced forward before firing a shot which went just wide. Three minutes before the break Colin Charlesworth had a good chance for the visitors but his shot was deflected wide for a corner which came to nothing. Half time: Fraserburgh 1 Inverurie Loco Works 0 The second half started quietly but the Broch started to exert some pressure and in the 54 th minute William West found Greg Buchan on the left and as he cut inside he fired in a shot which the Locos keeper fumbled but a Inverurie defender managed to clear before anyone in black and white could pounce on the rebound. Two minutes later Dean Cowie fired in a free kick after Bryan Hay had been fouled and once again Ryan Booth couldn t handle the shot and was thankful that one of his teammates was there to clear. It was all Fraserburgh now and Michael Rae picked out Greg Buchan on the left wing and he found Gary Harris inside the Locos box but his strike went over the bar from 12 yards out. On the hour William West, Dean Cowie and Gary Harris combined to set up Greg Buchan but he saw his shot tipped round the post by Ryan Booth. The second goal did come on 69 minutes though and it was another excellent finish. Ryan Cowie played the ball forward which was flicked on by William West and Gary Harris got behind his defender and rounded the keeper before coolly slotting the ball into an empty net. Locos weren t giving up the fight though and pulled a goal back three minutes later when Neil McLean s corner from the left was flicked home by the head of Andrew Hunter. The Broch tried to restore their two goal advantage immediately when Greg Buchan played the ball down the left wing to Gary Harris his attempt was deflected into the path of William West but the keeper blocked the Broch players shot before Michael Rae blasted the rebound high over the bar. On 81 minutes Michael Rae came closer with another 20 yard effort which Ryan Booth saved high to his left, Garry Harris then saw an effort parried by the Locos keeper before Paul Campbell wrapped up the points calmly stroking home a penalty after Ryan Broadhurst had barged Greg Buchan over inside the penalty area which left referee Liam Duncan no option but to point to the spot. Full time: Fraserburgh 3 Inverurie Loco Works 1 Fraserburgh: Peter Tait, Lewis Davidson, Bryan Hay, Ryan Cowie, Ryan Christie, Dean Cowie, Michael Rae, William West (Paul Campbell 86), Gary Harris (Cameron Buchan 88), Paul Young, Greg Buchan (Ryan Sargent 90). 11 THE ROAD TO HIGHLAND GIGG LEAGUE LANE ROUND BY PETER UP MYERS Bury FC have always been overshadowed by their illustrious neighbours Manchester United and Manchester City who, until recent times, usually had a couple of Scottish players in their squads. Scots have also turned out for Bury over the years including former Banks o Dee and Preston North End star George Mutch, who played for them in , and trialists recruited from the Highland League in the 1950s by North referee Willie Shanks, from Fochabers, who scouted for the Gigg Lane side and several other English clubs. Robbie Campbell of Lossiemouth AFC was given a trial with Second Division Bury in November 1951 but returned north after only a few weeks because he couldn t see himself settling in the Lancashire mill town. The 20-year-old Stewart Imlach, another promising Lossie player, was the next of Willie s discoveries to try his luck with the Shakers and was signed after he impressed in the three games he played for them over the Easter weekend of Another Scot to join Bury that year was Walter Kelly from Raith Rovers and who was the side s top scorer in season with 28 goals. Stewart made rapid progress at Gigg Lane as related in the highly acclaimed biography of him, My father and other working-class heroes, written by his son, Gary. While researching his father s career in the files of the Bury Times, Gary felt moved to celebrate when his dad broke through into the first team, cheered his goals and wished injury or a poor performance on anyone who took his place when he was dropped or out injured. Stewart climbed from the fourth string to the first team in just over a month, making his debut against Plymouth Argyle in September Gary highlights the fact that his father and other professional footballers laboured under the iniquity of the maximum wage and the lack of freedom to move elsewhere because the club held their registration and had the power to refuse a transfer request. Morris Marples was highly scathing of this culture in his 1954 book A History of Football: Such bondage is without parallel in any occupation today, and suggests a form of serfdom rather than the free relationship usual between employer and employee in the modern world. Matters were made worse at Gigg Lane when John McNeil, who had signed Stewart, cut the players wages on his arrival from Third Division Torquay United two seasons earlier. Stewart completed his joinery apprenticeship when he turned 21 and then became full-time with Bury. He was emerging as the club s star winger and Gary discovered that his dad s manager was indulging in some blatant myth-making by telling the newspapers that he had spotted Stewart while on holiday in Scotland and counted his signing as the best day s work I ever did. There was no mention of Willie Shanks, the diligent scout, who had sent Stewart for a trial with Bury. Stewart was attending his grandfather s funeral at Lossiemouth in May 1954 when his club phoned him to say that Derby County had made an offer for him. He agreed to the transfer but, as his son points out, once Bury had decided to sell him his father wasn t given a chance to find out who else might have been interested in him. Stewart went on to star with Nottingham Forest and helped them win the FA Cup in 1959 as well as being capped for Scotland during the World Cup finals in Sweden in Some years later, Willie Shanks arranged for Rodwill Clyne of Inverness Caledonian to have a four-week trial with Bury in August Rod recalled in his autobiography, In a Different League, that the Gigg Lane side s playing staff at that time included Jim Lovie from Peterhead, Billy Ritchie who later played for Keith, and Jimmy Reid and Jimmy Mercer who were also to join the Highland League. Rod confessed that he became disenchanted with full-time football. He trained for three mornings and two afternoons a week and the rest of his time was his own which meant endless hours of drinking coffee in cafes. Continued on page 13.

12 MATCH HIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE LOSSIEMOUTH ROUND UP The Broch chalked up another win on the road against Lossiemouth to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games. First half goals by Greg Buchan and Gary Harris were added to after the break with Harris adding another before Graham Johnston and Bryan Hay both netted for the first time this season. The visitors made two changes to the team that had derailed Inverurie Locos in midweek with Paul Campbell and Aidan Combe replacing Dean Cowie and William West who dropped to the bench. Their was also a return for Graham Johnston who took his place on the bench The Broch were first to threaten on 5 minutes when Lewis Davidson s corner was cleared as far as Paul Young who crossed but Gary Harris header was saved. The Black & Whites did take the lead four minutes later when a quick corner by Ryan Cowie to Gary Harris saw the Broch striker drive into the box and when his cross was cleared to the edge of the box Greg Buchan rifled the ball past the bewildered Cameron Farquhar in the home goal. Lossie attempted to get back into the match and on 21 minutes a corner kick was dangerously swung in by Harry Noble only to be palmed away by Peter Tait. Two minutes later Greg Buchan picked up a loose ball in midfield before driving towards goal and unleashing an ambitious drive from 35 yards which flew well wide of goal. In the 33 rd minute Gary Harris received the ball on the right wing and crossed to the back post where Aidan Combe met the ball but saw his shot blocked. The Broch doubled their lead on 35 minutes when Michael Rae played the ball out to Lewis Davidson on the right and as he drove into the box he cut the ball back to Gary Harris who swept the ball home from 8 yards out. Three minutes later Peter Tait pulled off a stunning save to deny Ross Duncan who found himself in space 10 yards out and thundered in a shot which Tait somehow tipped over the bar. At the other end Paul Campbell got free on the left and tried to hook the ball past Cameron Farquhar but his shot drifted wide of the post. Gary Harris then saw his cross blocked, Greg Buchan retrieved it and curled in a cross which Paul Campbell headed over. Just before the break Michael Rae won the ball in midfield and released Gary Harris on the right side of the Lossiemouth defence but the Broch hit man saw his shot saved by Cameron Farquhar. Half time Lossiemouth 0 Fraserburgh 2 The Broch had a double scare at the start of the second half when Harry Noble saw his shot crash back of the crossbar and when Ross Archibald met the rebound Peter Tait stood firm to pull off another fantastic save. Gary Harris and Greg Buchan then combined to create a chance for the former but the Broch s leading scorer saw his shot blocked. On 51 minutes Lossiemouth s Ryan Farquhar fired a ball across the visitor s six yard box but no Lossie player could get a touch. Three minutes later Ian Macrae played the ball through the right channel to Ryan Farquhar but he fired the ball just wide. Michael Rae then won a challenge at the edge of the home box on 57 minutes and cracked in a shot which Cameron Farquhar tipped over. The third goal was only delayed 4 minutes when Ryan Cowie played the ball forward on the left and Gary Harris cut inside the box and curled the ball home into the bottom right hand corner. Two minutes later it was 4-0 to the Broch when Graham Johnston who has only just come onto the pitch managed to poke home a through ball from Greg Buchan s pass. The home side could consider themselves a bit unlucky to be so far behind but they did get some reward on 71 minutes when a ball over the top of the Broch defence by Ryan McRitchie found substitute James McLaren and he kept his composure to beat peter Tait from 12 yards. Four minutes later the Broch should have made it 5 when Ryan Sargent crossed from the left into the feet of Gary Harris and he laid the ball off the Graham Johnston but he snatched at his shot and it went well wide. Gary Harris then went close to getting his hat-trick when Michael Rae won the ball and played it down the right channel but the Broch striker couldn t beat the Lossie keeper from 10 yards. The Broch s fifth goal came on 85 minutes when after retaining possession for several minutes which saw most Broch players touch the ball Greg Buchan found Graham Johnston and he played it out to Lewis Davidson on the right and he crossed for Bryan Hay to drill the ball home from 12 yards out. 13 THE HIGHLAND ROAD LEAGUE TO GIGG ROUND LANE UP Continued from page 11 - Rod never played at Gigg Line and said the third team were farmed out to play on village pitches. He also rebelled against certain English styles of playing football. During training, the goalkeeper was told to come out to the edge of the box, so narrowing the attacking players shooting angle. While Rod s team-mates kept hitting the ball against the keeper, Rod dribbled round him before slipping the ball into the net. To his amazement, Rod was pulled up for this practice by manager Dave Russell and ordered to do what he was told. Rod was also unhappy with the English style of wing play involving an inside-forward and a winger which required the former to do a lot more running than he would have done in the Highland League. After three and a half weeks at Bury, Rod told Russell he was homesick and returned north with no regrets at passing up the chance of playing full-time football. In more recent times, the Scottish link with Bury has been maintained with Aberdeen s Irish goal ace Adam Rooney having played on loan with the Gigg Lane side while with Stoke City. In February this year, Kilmarnock manager Lee Clark quit Rugby Park after a year in charge to become Bury s boss and was given the immediate task of hauling the League One side out of the relegation zone. Clark had previously been manager of Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City and Blackpool. Fraserburgh v Forres Mechanics complete record since Fraserburgh joined the Highland League - The Broch and Forres have met on 193 occasions since the first match in September 1912 which was in the Qualifying Cup at Bellslea Park which Fraserburgh won 1-0. It would be another 10 years before the teams would meet again once the Broch had been admitted to the Highland League and this time the victory was more emphatic for the Black and Whites 4-1. The reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw. Overall the Broch hold a slender lead with 84 wins to 80 and 29 matches drawn. The Can Cans won the only Scottish Cup tie between the sides in at Bellslea Park. Amazingly the clubs have never met in a Cup Final given their exploits in cup competitions over the years. The Broch s highest victory came in December 1956 when the won 7-0 at Bellslea Park whilst Forres biggest win came in November 1925 when they destroyed Fraserburgh 9-2 at Mosset Park. This is a record for the number of goals in a match between the sides which was equalled in January 1953 when the Broch won 6-5. Charlie Duncan s first match as manger of the Broch was against Forres in November 1984 with the Cans winning 2-1. The only match to take place at a neutral venue was in April 1988 when Forres defeated the Broch 2-1 at Borough Briggs, Elgin whilst their ground was being relocated due to the road bypass.

Goals in the last quarter by Ryan Sargent, Liam Norris and Jordan Smith were enough to see off an ill disciplined Cove team who had Glen Donald sent off for dissent late on. The first chances of the game fell to Cove Rangers with Edward Flinn in the home goal doing well to thwart Hamish MacLeod in the 4 th minute and followed that up with another smart save to deny Adam Joji 11 minutes later. The Broch were finding it difficult to create any chances but Graham Johnston s corner on 26 minutes flashed across the face of goal before being deflected behind for another set piece. In the 37 minute another Graham Johnston corner was cleared to the edge of the box where Blair Fraser fired in an effort which was blocked. A minute later Cameron Buchan found Blair Fraser with a throw in and he played it back to Graham Johnston who curled in a cross for Liam Norris who saw his header flash wide. Just before the break Graham Johnston curled in a free kick from the touchline which a Cove defender headed just wide of the post. Half time: Fraserburgh 0 Cove Rangers 0 Blair Fraser saw his cross cleared over the bar at the start of the second half. Ryan Sargent then smashed in a rising drive which just cleared the bar. At the other end Hamish Macleod saw his effort from the right side of the penalty area well saved by Edward Flinn. On the hour Kieran Simpson found Bailey Simpson on the right wing and his cross was met by Liam Norris but he pulled his effort wide. Cameron Buchan then missed a great chance firing wide after Graham Johnston and Ryan Sargent had combined to set him up. Cove then had a chance on 72 minutes when Sam Robertson cut the ball back for Liam Duncan but Jack Simpson was on hand to block the effort. A minute later the Broch took the lead when Stuart Rennie headed the ball on to Jordan Smith and he flicked the ball into the path of Ryan Sargent who fired in a shot which spun into the net off the Cove keeper Cameron Jarvie. Three minutes later it was 2-0 when Bailey Simpson s cross into the middle was challenged for by Jordan Smith and the ball broke kindly to Liam Norris to side foot home from 10 yards. One of the Broch s and the Highland League s best players on his day, Graham is the leading scorer at the club and has a happy knack of notching vital goals on the big stage. He is one of the Broch s main threats from set pieces and celebrated his testimonial match against Peterhead FC in July. He will be hoping to stay clear of niggling injuries this season. Debut v Fort William 22/03/ Sponsor: Toppings Entertainments Gary Harris, Forward, Age 29: Appearances: 33; Goals: 29; Former Deveronvale and Turriff United player Gary joined the club last season in a deal that saw Grant Noble going the other way to Deveronvale. Gary has been a regular scorer on the Highland League scene over the past few years and has given the Broch a different type of option up front as he is good in the air, strong on the ball and his experience will rub off on the younger strikers at the club. He has now scored 29 goals in 33 appearances for the club including one on his debut against Gala Fairydean Rovers in the Scottish Cup last season. Debut v Gala Fairydean Rovers 24/09/ Sponsor: Adam & Dougie Duncan Michael Rae, Midfielder, Age 29: Appearances: 71; Goals: 4; Michael rejoined the club from Maud Juniors two seasons ago having been at Fraserburgh as a youth. He was instrumental in Maud s challenge for honours and has brought experience and energy to the Broch side having captained the juniors at Maud. Made a scoring debut against Rothes in his second spell with the club and was outstanding in the Aberdeenshire Shield Final victory over Cove Rangers two seasons ago. Debut v Forres Mechanics 01/04/ Sponsor: Mike McLean Aidan Combe, Forward, Age 20: Appearances: 87; Goals: 9; Joined the club three seasons ago having previously played for Keith at under 17 level. It was during a match against the Broch where he came to the club s attention with his attacking wing play and pace causing all sorts of problems for the Bellslea side. Scored his first goal for the club at Keith in April 2015 and notched his first goal at Bellslea Park against Rothes last season which was also the club s 7000th. Debut v Inverurie Loco Works 13/08/ Sponsor: Deborah & John Stephen Paul Campbell, Forward, Age 24: Appearances: 65; Goals: 29; Paul is a forward who joined the Broch from Maud juniors two seasons ago and he was a regular on the scoresheet at Maud and his previous club FC Stoneywood. He notched his first goal for the Broch at Lossiemouth in the League Cup from the penalty spot and notched another twenty eight since then including two hat-tricks at Strathspey Thistle last season and Fort William this term. He is good in the air and has blistering pace. Debut v Formartine United 16/01/ Sponsor: John Bruce (Brasso) Paul Young, Midfielder, Age 25: Appearances: 10; Goals: 1; Paul joined the club at the same time as Lewis Davidson and is the son of former Broch great Jimmy Young. A former Peterhead FC youth player has also had spells at Huntly & Turriff United so has great Highland League experience and will add to an impressive array of talented midfielders at the club. Paul is very comfortable on the ball, tenacious in the tackle and scored his first goal for the club in the 3-1 victory over Inverurie Locos. Debut v Wick Academy 29/07/2017 Sponsor: Lewis Thomson

29 FRASERBURGH FC PLAYER PROFILES Nathan Stuart, Defender, Age 18: Appearances: 13; Goals 0; Nathan has also been promoted to the first team squad during the past season after a number of impressive performances in the U20s over the past couple of years. He is one of the fastest players at the club and has great crossing ability. He will be looking to make a big impact this season having made 13 appearances for the first team although he has been loaned out to Maud to get some game time. Debut v Fort William 30/04/ Sponsor: Available - Contact Finlay Noble to Sponsor Ryan Sargent, Forward, Age 17: Appearances: 8; Goals 1; Ryan has been promoted to the first team squad this season after a number of impressive performances in the U20s team last season. He is one of the fastest players at the club and has quick feet and good crossing ability. He is sure to make a big impact this season having impressed during pre season scoring in a number of friendly matches including against Peterhead. Notched his first competitive goal for the club in the 10-0 win at Fort William. Debut v Buckie Thistle 12/04/ Sponsor: Adam & Dougie Duncan Mark Cowie, Manager, Appearances: 242; Goals: 25 Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to Formartine United. His experience and calmness from his playing days has been of great assistance to the younger members of the playing squad. He has brought fresh ideas to the team whilst staying true to the club s philosophy of bringing through young talent. Has already led the club to success in the Aberdeenshire Cup & Aberdeenshire Shield and will be looking to improve the League position this term having finished in 5 th place last season. Debut v Clachnacuddin 24/11/ Sponsor: Spinney & Hindu James Duthie, Assistant Manager, James joined the club when the rest of the previous backroom team left to join Formartine United. He has a wealth of experience from his playing days and in various managerial roles in Junior Football and Highland League circles. He works well with Mark and their ideas have already brought silverware to the club and will be looking to push for more honours this term. Sponsor: Billy Duthie Alex Mair, First Team Coach, Alex seems to have been around the club for ages. He was part of both Charlie Duncan s and Kris Hunter s coaching team and has remained loyal to the club. As well as taking on first team coaching duties Alex takes control of the U20 team and has been instrumental in the development of a number of players who are plying their trade in the first team and of those who are looking to make the step up. Sponsor: Mike McColm Stevie Doak, First Team Goalkeeping Coach, Appearances: 19 Stevie joined the coaching team two seasons ago having been sounded out by Mark. A former player at the club and several other Highland League teams, Stevie also brings a wealth of experience and knowledge which will be invaluable to the development of the current first team keepers. Sponsor: North Street Dentist Sarah Robertson, First Team Physiotherapist. Sarah has joined the coaching staff at Bellslea this summer as part of Mark Cowie s backroom team. She will be responsible for ensuring that the players remain in tip top shape which is not an easy task in the modern game. Sponsor: Kinmundy Developments
