This regional competition has grown so much over the last 20 years and Southern African teams are more competitive as a result. COSAFA has just had two Under-20 teams in the World Cup in South Korea South Africa and Zambia. COSAFA also had three teams at the Rio Olympic Games South Africa (men and women) and Zimbabwe (women). Zimbabwe represented COSAFA in the 2017 African Nations Cup, while Zimbabwe and South Africa also represented COSAFA in the Women s African Nations Cup. For teams from Southern Africa, and particularly senior teams, the COSAFA Castle Cup provides the platform for growth, opportunity and development. The COSAFA Castle Cup falls amidst three important competitions for our senior national team the qualifiers for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, then the qualifiers for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kenya, and finally qualification for the 2018 World Cup. It is going to be a jam-packed season and this COSAFA Castle Cup tournament will provide us with the opportunity to fine-tune our squads and make sure we are ready to compete. I am very happy because we have a new coach and it affords Stuart Baxter the opportunity to have a look again at the kind of player he needs in the battles of AFCON, CHAN, and World Cup qualifiers. We are back in the North West, where we were for the COSAFA U-20 Youth Championship in December 2016, to enjoy the hospitality of the provincial government. I want to thank the North West government; they have always been a source of strength and inspiration and are always ready to do what is necessary to ensure the success of any tournament in the province. The world-class Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg and Moruleng Stadium will be used to host matches just as they did for the successful hosting of this same tournament in I wish to praise sponsors Castle Lager, who were also partners of the inaugural COSAFA Castle Cup in 1997 and have been regular sponsors of the event since. Football in our region, particularly national team football, would not be possible without Castle Lager, who as you are well aware, are also title sponsors of one of the 14 COSAFA teams, our very own Bafana Bafana the defending champions who have won this competition four times together with Zambia and Zimbabwe. The COSAFA Cup is an important regional tournament that contributes immensely to the strengthening of football in the Southern African region. We are particularly proud to host this 17 th edition of the COSAFA Cup as reigning champions, having won the title in Namibia last year. The victory in Namibia meant that we joined the elite club of nations who have won the title on four occasions, alongside Zambia and Zimbabwe. Current Club: Kaizer Chiefs FC (RSA) MESSAGE FROM MR STUART BAXTER Head Coach of Bafana Bafana, the Men s Senior National Team It is with great pride that we go into this tournament where our main aim is to showcase the young talent that South Africa has at its disposal. The strategy this time around is to invest time and gain experience for the players that are going to go on and have international experience. Our approach now must be to do things in a similar manner to what the Germans are doing in the FIFA Confederations Cup where they have only about three or four senior players supporting a group of U21s. We have picked a team for the COSAFA Castle Cup with an average age of 22,6 years which includes some of the younger, interesting players from the base of the U20 National Team that recently went to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Korea Republic. We could have selected former internationals or more experienced players, but instead we chose just a few to act as mentors and provide leadership as I said, the investment of time and international experience in younger players who will be future internationals is the main thing. This reinforces SAFA's Vision 2022 blueprint and will ultimately serve the country better. We have to say a big thank you to all the clubs who were able to assist us in putting together this group of players. The cooperation we got from the clubs was very positive and inspiring and we really appreciate that. I am certain that at the end of the tournament we will have a clear indication of where we are and what more we need to do going forward. But right here we have a good group of youngsters and that augurs well for the future of South African football. I have to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been supporting me throughout and I hope that support continues because we have a very important period ahead of us for the National Team first up is this COSAFA Castle Cup, then the CHAN qualifiers, followed by the World Cup qualifiers and early next year we play the AFCON qualifiers so we are going to need all the support we can get.
