Check out our gentlemen and their side profiles as they wear their hats in style! October Fun Facts Ireland is believed to be the birthplace of Halloween, which was originally a Celtic festival called Samhain. The word witch comes from the Old English wicce, meaning female magician, sorceress. Turnips, potatoes and beets were originally used to make Jack O Lanterns. It wasn t until Irish, English, and Scottish immigrants moved to the Americas that pumpkins were used. On October 9, 2016, Mathis Willemijns set a world record at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship with a pumpkin that weighed 2,524.6 pounds. Regency Retirement Community of Huntsville 4

10 Community Spotlight Therapy Corner Welcome to another edition of Therapy Corner. This month I would like to address something that affects a large percentage of the older population and that is falls. From a therapist s perspective, the old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure applies. Often, falls are the result of decreased activity which can lead to muscle tightness, decreased flexibility, and weakening of muscles. As we age, we are not as active as we once were resulting in more time sitting. Muscles are very efficient structures and will shorten when not used. This shortening of the muscles can cause a person to walk with a stooped posture. This posture can cause a change in a person s center of gravity which increases the person s risk of falling. The decreased activity level also causes a person s muscles to begin to weaken. We have a saying in therapy, With strength comes stability. The stronger a person is, the more stable they are when walking or standing. That stability is vital to balance. All of the issues mentioned above can be prevented if a person simply tries to remain more active. So here is your ounce of prevention. Try getting involved in an exercise class 2-3 times a week. Or maybe during the day get up and walk every 1-2 hours. While sitting watching TV, do exercises during commercial breaks. If you are past the prevention point and need a pound of cure, we as physical therapists can help. We can help you get started on a stretching and exercise program. In closing, don t wait for that fall to happen. Go ahead and get started with some stretching and exercise to keep your body in a better working condition to keep you safe. If you are already having balance issues, let your doctor know or contact us in the physical therapy department and let us help you get back on track. Hope you have a great October!
