11 Pony Clubs Games Teams by Carolyn Spratling I have been given the job as the new games team manager. That is what happens when you don t go to committee meetings, you can t say no. It will be hard to follow on from the excellent job Mark Portman has done but I ll give it a bash, like I had a choice. I m sure Mark will be in my ear when I need some direction. Firstly for the new members I will explain what games are about. Games or novelties, is where horses and their riders race against competitors from other clubs to complete set tasks as fast as possible. For example the bending race. Riders weave through bending poles holding a baton and then race back to hand the baton to the next rider who follows on bending through the poles. This continues till all the team have completed the task. Games are great fun and you learn new skills and team work along the way. Our club puts together teams to go and compete against other clubs. We are now looking for members who are interested in attending the Zone competition that will be held at Kangaroo Ground on Saturday the 7 th of May. The teams that place 1 st and 2 nd at in this event will then go on to represent our Zone at a State level in June at Bacchus Marsh (Thermal undies always a must at that event). St Andrews has had a great team of games riders and has made it through to State every time for many years. We would like as many members as possible to come along to our training days. Even if you are not ready to jump into a team yet this training will get you started ready for the future. You will learn so many skills while having fun along the way. We would like to see some of our little riders come along too as you are never too young to start learning the basics. Remember Tahlei was very young when she started and was lucky enough to be in a team that has taken her to State twice so far. I will try to get some of our seniors to come along to a couple of trainings to help riders with the finer details of riding these games. Our seniors have not only competed in other States but also internationally so we couldn t have better mentors to learn from. Listed below are the dates and times that I have pencilled in for training at our club grounds. I have tried to mix it up with mornings, afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays to cater for those with sporting commitments on the weekends. The dates also work around Pony Club, our camp and known competition dates. Confirmation dates and times will be printed in future newsletters and ed out so you know if any dates or times have changed. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me on or drop me an Carolyn.spratling@aus.salvationarmy.org Saturday 5 th March 10.00am Saturday 19 th March 2.00pm Saturday 9 th April 10.00am (After this practice we will teams will be selected) Sunday 24 th April 2.00pm Friday 6 th May 4.00pm Saturday 7 th May Zone Competition Kangaroo Ground
