1 EVENTS & OUTINGS FOR OCTOBER 2017 FROM THE DESK OF THE ADMINISTRATOR 2 3 ISSUE 10 VOLUME 20 OCTOBER 2017 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 6 LOOKING AHEAD TO NOVEMBER 6 VOLUNTEER NEWS 7 It's a late summer morning and I had the great pleasure of visiting with Nancy Whitaker on the lovely Whispering Willows neighborhood. Nancy was born and raised on Long Island in New York. During Nancy s high school years she enjoyed running track and was a baton twirler leading the marching band. She worked in New York City on the corner of 44th and Madison Avenue as a secretary, and loved her job. She married and had two sons, Don and Rob Harmon. She also has four grandchildren. Nancy met her husband Steven Whitaker through a mutual friend and she stated, We just hit it off right away. They married and traveled the United States Harness racing. After years of traveling and racing they moved to Brooklyn, Michigan, where they had a farm with 40 harness race horses and raced 20 horses a week. Nancy and Steven worked hard on their farm taking care of the horses, shoeing, feeding, and training everyday. She said she just loved working on the farm taking care of the horses, they are just like your children. She stated, They met a lot of nice people during their travels and racing. Her sons, Don and Rob, still race for a living. Don lives here on the farm in Brooklyn, while Rob lives in New York racing there. Nancy used to like to crochet and knit and she now enjoys crossword puzzles, reading a book once in awhile, and enjoys adult coloring books. I very much enjoyed visiting with Nancy, she is a delight to talk to. Thank you so much, Nancy, for spending time with me and being the Resident of the Month for October 2017.

2 October 2: It s time for our monthly Resident Council, please come down and bring a friend. We encourage everyone to come down and give us your thoughts, compliments, and concerns. It is open to all of our Residents. October 6: You won t want to miss this! We are having our Harvest Moon homecoming parade and coronation of this year s homecoming King and Queen along with Miss Congeniality! We will also have a parade of this year s floats, one from each neighborhood made by the Residents and caregivers on each neighborhood. October 9: Please come down and help our October babies celebrate their birthdays. We will, as usual, have some yummy tasting birthday cake from our Dietary Department and fun music by Virginia. October 11: We will be going out to Los Tres Amigos for some great Mexican food, so if you would like to go let you Activity Assistant know. October 13: We will be going on our Fall color tour Out & About. Hopefully, we will see some beautiful fall colors that Michigan is known for. We will also be stopping by, but not getting off, Meckley s Flavor Fruit Farms to get a taste of their apple cider and donuts. October 17: We will be hosting the Rock Painting Club again this month. We had so much fun last month painting rocks and making new friends, so please come down and try out your hand painting art onto rocks. October 19: We will be making a shopping trip to Walmart. This event fills very quickly so be sure to tell your Activity Assistant if you would like to go. We will have more shopping trips and November and the first part of December. October 20: It s time for David s Cooking Show, and as we all know by now, it will be a delicious mystery up until time for the show, but that is part of the fun. Come down and watch and taste another David Green creation! October 24: We will be having our Pumpkin Carving contest, which is always a lot of fun! Teams from each neighborhood will each have a pumpkin to carve and or decorate and then they will be judged for the winner. Each pumpkin then has a place of honor on each neighborhood so that everyone can see how great these pumpkins are. October 26: The invitations have been sent and given out to the residents for our annual Harvest Home Celebration. We look so forward to be able to host this wonderful event for our residents and their family members. Be on the look out for your invitation either in the mail or in your room! October 31: Yep, that s right...it is Halloween!! It is a busy, wonderfully fun, loud day at JCMCF. We will start off with our Halloween Costume Contest and it will be followed by our Halloween party and going through the Haunted House created by the fabulous Vandercook Lake High School Honor Society. It is always a lot of fun! Then at 6:30 that evening, we will be having trick-or-treat for the grandchildren of our Residents and the children of our caregivers. It is sooooo much fun to see all the little people dressed in their costumes. (Due to space constraints, we are only able to have the children of our Staff and Residents at this trick-ortreating event. Thank you for your understanding!) Page 2 OCTOBER 2017

3 Pumpkin faces smile, folks are dressed in colorful costumes begging for sweets and threatening tricks. Leaves crunch as we walk along the sidewalk and the smell of fall is in the air. There is no season the captures the heart quite like fall, especially in Michigan. Autumn is the time of year to harvest what we have sewn. This can be done on so many levels. Physically, it is the time of harvesting all the crops, celebrating that harvest and giving thanks for the bounty of the earth. Emotionally, we look back and fondly remember those who have gone before us and gifted us with our heritage and lineage. Intellectually, we take stock of what we have accomplished and where we go from here. What have we harvested in our lives this year? Finally, spiritually we celebrate the season with gratefulness, which is in itself a blessing. October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came, The Ashes, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The sunshine spread a carpet, And every thing was grand; Miss Weather led the dancing; Professor Wind, the band... Temperatures will begin to drop (even if it is 90 degrees today in late September!) and that means it is time to bring in those cold weather items for your loved one. Hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and coats are needed when our Residents go out for outings and appointments. Please drop the clothing at the Front Desk for labeling. Our Laundry Department are most happy to provide this service. Please know that the Activities Team keeps track of everyone that attends an outing and tries to be as fair when assigning the outings. If you have bags of wrapped candy to give you may drop it off at the front desk. This is one of the nights our residents really get to remember and enjoy what it was like at their homes on Halloween night when the children came over. LOOKING AHEAD November 5th Set clocks back 1 hour November 24th- Thanksgiving Day OCTOBER 2:00 pm We have our annual Employees Costume Contest. This is always a hoot, so plan to attend. Our annual Haunted House for residents will be Tuesday, October 31st at 2:30 pm. The Honor Students from Vandercook Lake Schools are the ones who come and do all the decorating to make their elaborate spooky house for us each year. Residents look forward to this every year. We can always use help to take Residents through the house and to get their treats. If you are available please give me a call to volunteer.
