We attended 4 different breakout sessions including The Little Things, Teens in the Driver s Seat, Personality Profile, and What s in/what s Out. In The Little Things session we learned about all the little things that matter in the workplace and in everyday life. In Teens in the Driver s Seat we learned about safety. In the Personality Profile session we learned what our personality was and what it entails. There were 4 different profiles - a lion, otter, golden retriever, and beaver. A few of the members were actually a combination of 2 of them; for example, Michelle and Minerva were "lotters" (lions and otters). The last session What s in, What s Out was about fashion. We learned about fashion making a circle, timeless pieces, and how to dress for an interview. All members participated in different tests and received either gold, silver, or bronze stars, but we got mostly golds. The friendships between us all grew stronger, and we made new friends as well. Tuesday may be the day we participated in a workshop at PJC, but we also learned valuable leadership skills that will help us today, tomorrow, and in the future. 10 Volume 12, Issue 7 Page 10 Pink and Denim Worn in Support of Survivors October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and SBISD faculty and staff will be raising money for breast cancer research by participating in Pink and Denim Days. Staff who choose to wear pink and denim during the month of October on Thursdays will be making a $5.00 donation for each Thursday. All donations will go to the Komen Foundation. Students are also invited to wear pink and denim on Thursdays in October. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so. If you would like to write a check, please make it payable to the foundation. Donations will be made in honor of Renee Weeks, a breast cancer survivor. If you would like your donation to be in honor or in memory of a family member or friend, your money can be placed in an individual envelope with the name of the person. When the money is sent, Mrs. Northcutt will send it with the information you provide. Mrs. Weeks is the 6 th grade teacher. She says, I have done the Relay for Life walk for the last two years. The first year I was still doing chemo, but I participated. Last year I walked much longer. I will always do Relay for Life. I had chemo for 18 months, the most tried and true method of battling my form of the disease. They have a new drug that was best for the type of cancer I had. They said that if I had to have cancer, this was the one to have because of this new drug and the strides that have been made in the treatment of this form of breast cancer. Research has made it possible for us to have more and more cancer survivors. That is what you support when you support the breast cancer research or programs such as the Komen Foundation and Relay for Life. Mrs. Weeks says the very hardest part of her experience with cancer was having to tell her children about her diagnosis, especially since just 15 months earlier, they had lost their grandmother to cancer. Mrs. Weeks is a true survivor and says, I just live each day like there s no tomorrow or that I might have very few tomorrows. Pictured L-R are Renee Weeks, Tanya Massey, Judy Bunch, Lori Green, Cathy Vance, and Janiece Joslin.
