3 FCCLA Prepares for Region III Competition FCCLA students will be leaving on Friday, February 19, for competition at Region III FCCLA meeting in Plano. Those competing and their categories are Illustrated Talk-Ashley Keen and Ester Marquez; Fashion Design-Jaime Formoso; Entrepreneurship-Michelle Davila; Teach and Train-Minerva Marquez; Applied Technology- Jackson Dailey, Dustin Lawson; Parliamentary Procedure-Danielle Jordan, Josh Cannon, Bruce Marrero, Stephanie Hogue, Jackie Blake, Amanda Fowler; Leadership Enhancement Test- Maria Villalon. Winning teams will be announced on Saturday at the second general session. The chapter will also be recognized on Saturday at the meeting for outstanding projects they have completed this year. Senior Honor Roll Students Two senior students were inadvertently left off of the 3rd six weeks A, AB Honor Roll. Those students that were missing were Charles Carns and Royce Naylor. Fellowship of Christian Students Wednesday Mornings 7:30 A.M. Come Join Us For Doughnuts Gregg Martinez To Appear Wednesday Gregg Martinez, motivational speaker and singer, will be here on Wednesday at 10 AM to speak with the student body. He will also be here for a Youth Rally/Revival on Wednesday night at the new gym. The rally is sponsored by area churches. Pizza will be served at 6:00, and the rally will begin at 6:30. Gregg Martinez whose blend of blues, R&B and swamp pop music he describes as bayou blues and Creole soul was born and raised and still lives in the Cajun country of south Louisiana where he began singing in church at the age of eight. Ten years later, he was singing professionally. His powerhouse voice, which has been compared to Sam Cooke and Luther Vandross. The late Ed Bradley of TV s 60 Minutes upon seeing him perform at the new Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2005 called Gregg Martinez one of America s greatest hidden treasures. His talent is the stuff of legend and even after more than thirty years, Gregg is better than ever. He has performed throughout the U.S. and has toured South Africa, England, Wales, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam.Gregg has released eight recordings, Wonders Never Cease- 1991, Love Has A Voice- 1993, They That Wait- 1997, For The Ages- 1999, All The Days- 2001, Christmas- 2002, Bring Down The Thunder- 2004, and Big Bad Daddy His music is played on radio stations in the U.S. and abroad. Gregg has shared the stage with many notable artists including Stevie Wonder, Foreigner, BTO, Dobie Gray, Shirley Caesar, Percy Sledge, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Patti Labelle, and Bobby Blue Bland. Gregg and his band, the Delta Kings, are available to perform at selected venues and festivals. He can also been seen and heard as lead singer with the legendary Boogie Kings, for which he wrote the title song for their 2007 release. Never Go Away. Sulphur Bluff Varsity- 45 Miller Grove-54 1st Quarter- 14SB/17MG 2nd Quarter- 12 SB/8MG 3rd Quarter- 8SB/20MG 4th Quarter- 9SB/13MG Scoring was Naylor-2, Potts-2, Bryant-5, Thompson-13, Wolf-15, Andrews-2, Hancock-6. Offensive rebounds were Wolf-1, Goldsmith-1, Bryant-1, Naylor-1, Andrews-1. Defensive rebounds were Andrews-1, Wolf-10, Thompson-3, Naylor-3. The next game is a tie breaker between Sulphur Bluff and Miller Grove for runner-up and third in district. The site is at North Hopkins ISD. The game time is 7:00 PM on Friday night, February 12. The girls will play again on Tuesday, but other details are yet to be announced until Friday or Saturday night. The high school boys basketball team plays on Monday night,, February 15, at North Hopkins at 7:00. The game is against Saltillo. They ended the season not giving up and giving a 100 % effort and that makes you a winner regardless of the score. Evan though we were out sized down low we still managed to out hustle the other team for most of the rebounds. That s what it takes to be successful in basketball, you have to out work the other team. The boys came out wanting to work hard from start to finish and they did just that.
