1 NEWS 3rd Issue November 22., 2013 Mrs. Rodgers Interview By: Alex and Tricia This week we interviewed Mrs. Rodgers. One of the questions were, if you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? She said, I would buy a tiny island in the tropics and fly all my friends and family down to visit all the time. I would also give tons of money to cancer research. We asked her, what was the most exciting thing that has happened to you? She responded, I won ten thousand dollars at the Casino. Also, being in the first row at the Dave Matthews concert. We also asked her, if you could change one thing about the world what would you change? I would change it so that everyone in the world treated each other with kindness. Our final question that we asked her was, if you had a super power what would it be? She said, It would definitely be to fly. Mrs. Rodgers has many interesting experiences. November at Adlai By: Tricia Fratangelo This November, Adlai s Student Government had elections for officers and homeroom representatives. Adlai s president for is Lorna Shebeck, vice president is Jared Hoener, recording secretary is Denny Ayres, and our corresponding secretary is Tricia Fratangelo. Mrs. Rodger s homeroom representative is Jenna Montgomery. Justin Mascilli is Mr. Shafer s homeroom representative. Our fifth grade homeroom representatives for Mrs. Herington s class are Jillian Durst and Trever Walko. Mrs. Gestrich s homeroom representatives are Kelly Maguire and Haley Nixion. Mrs. Rodgers and Mr. Shafer are the teacher co-chairs of Student Government. We also had a food drive for the plum Food Pantry. The food drive was very successful and will help many families out for the upcoming holidays. The food drive started on November 4 th and ended on November 15 th. Veteran s Day was on November 11 th. Student government held a Veteran s Day Program in the auditorium. Adlai s Student Government officers and representatives said the t Veteran s Day Proclamation. Lorna Shebeck also read a letter from President Barak Obama. The student store also opened in November. The official opening date was November 15 th. Lots of supplies and materials were set up for students to buy. The store was also packed with students. The student store will be open every Wednesday and Friday. November was an exciting and busy month. December at Adlai We will be going to Ridgewood Place on December 17 th to sing to the residents and give them presents. Adlai s Student Government will also be collecting for Toys-for-Tots. We will be continuing the Student Store every Wednesday and Friday. There will be a free Hat Day on December 13 th. PTA will hold a Holiday Movie Night on Friday December 6 th. This is the fifth year the paper has been in publication. It is written and edited completely by the sixth grade students during RTII. 2 The Baseball Player Of The Week By: Le Le and Sammi Starling Marte plays on the Pittsburgh Pirates and is number six. He plays in left field. He throws and hits right handed. He was born October 9, 1988 in the Dominican Republic. He is currently 25 years old. He is 6 foot 1 inch tall and weighs 185 pounds. His debut was July 26, 2012 at age 23. He did not attend college. He has one year experience and makes 500,000 dollars a year. Weekly Surveys By: Claire and Rebecca This week, we asked 3 rd grade in the cafeteria what their favorite sport was. Their options were football, cheer, dance, basketball, and baseball. Most kids like baseball while only four, the least of all of the sports, like basketball. Football is close behind with dance in 3 rd place. We also asked some of the students why they liked that sport the best. Faith from Mrs. McIntyre s class likes cheer because you can do flips and cheer for teams. Emily from Mrs. Wisnesk s room likes basketball because she likes to run and shoot hoops. In conclusion, most 3 rd graders in Adlai chose baseball as their favorite sport. Marc- Andre Fleury By: Brandon and J-Mas The Pittsburgh Penguins possibly have the best goaltender in hockey. Marc-Andre Fleury was born November 28, 1984 at the age of 28. He is 6 foot 2 inches tall and 180 pounds. His salary is 5.5 million USD [2013]! He was drafted 1 st overall in 2003 from the Pittsburg Penguins. Fleury is known as the Flower derived from the English translation of his last name [Fleury is in bloom, or in flower in French.] He is starting the season. He is number #29 and Pittsburgh fans appreciate what he has done for this team. Page 2

3 TEACHER INTERVIEW BY: MICHAELA and LORNA This week we decided to interview Mr. Bechtold. We found out that he went to school in Swissvale. But when he was in second grade he moved to Plum and went to Holiday Park Elementary school. He went to college at Pitt University. When he was younger he knew he s always wanted to do something with art. He also liked to help people learn so that s why he became an art teacher. In plum Mr. Bechtold has been teaching for five years. Whenever he was younger his favorite thing to draw was cartoons, like Disney movies and video game characters. His favorite color is olive green. We asked him if he liked carrots. He said carrots were the worst vegetables. But cooked carrots don t bother him. In his free time he likes to create new art projects and playing music in his Mammoth By: Vinny, Tyler, and Jacob The answer from last week s question was true. This week s topic is about the wooly mammoth. This animal has long since been extinct. Its extinction occurred in about 1700B.C. It was an herbivore, which means that it only ate plants and no meat. It weighed about 8.8 TONS. That s about 17,600 pounds! They spent up to 16 to 18 feeding or moving towards a source of food or water. They consumed about 130 to 660. They drank between 16 to 40 gallons of water a day. One last thing, they produced up to 310 to 400 pounds of dung each day. Yes, they produced that much poop. What year did the mammoth become extinct? 1300 B.C B.C None of the above Milo By The Sealz Milo is from the T.V show Fish Hooks on Disney Channel. Milo is a party fish. He is the brother of Oscar, and his other friend is Bea. Milo will never let any of his friends leave their friendship. Milo doesn t spill the secret that Oscar has a secret crush on Bea. That proves that he is a good friend. Milo has a blue Mohawk. He also wears a blue striped shirt. Milo s favorite food is apples. Milo s dream is fly with apples. In the original design of Milo, he was taller and looked different. Milo will always be and adventurous and funny fish!!!! Page 3

4 Pet of the Week By- Sydney & Kira This week s pet of the week is Claire s cute and small turtle Squirt. Squirt is an eleven, female red eared slider. Claire sometimes takes her outside to play in the grass. She eats turtle food, veggies, and worms. Squirt is a semi aquatic that can live on both water and land. Claire feeds her and cleans her cage every other day. Squirt is an adorable and kind turtle. Mrs. McIntyre By: A&L Daily This week we interviewed Mrs. McIntyre, a third grade teacher. We asked her some questions and got good answers. Mrs. McIntyre said she went to IUP for college. We also wanted to know what her favorite animal is, she said her favorite animal was her cat, Sneaks. She grow up at Turtle Creek and Monroeville, two great places to live. She wanted to become a teacher because she LOVED school when she was little. We also wanted to know what her favorite color was, she said it was green. The last question we asked was who she considered her best friend, she said it was her sister, we thought that was sweet. Now you know a little bit more about Mrs. McIntyre. Clayton Kershaw By: The No-Names Clayton Kershaw was born March 19, 1988 in Texas. He is now age 25. He is 6 foot 3 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. Kershaw made his major league debut May 25, 2008 as a pitcher for the Dodgers. Clayton is lefty in both pitching and batting. In his career he has 77 wins and 46 losses with an ERA of He has 1,206 strikeouts out of 1,180 innings pitched. In one year Clayton Kershaw makes 4 million dollars. Clayton was so good that he was drafted into the MLB right out of high school. His pitching almost lead the Dodgers to a World Series victory in But, the Cardinals ended up beating them in the second round of the playoffs. Page 4

5 The Hunger Games- Movie Review By: The Llama Lickers This week we are doing a movie review for the Hunger Games. We surveyed 20 people to see what they would rate it from 1 star to 5 stars. We got nine votes for 5 stars, six for 4 stars, four for three stars, and one for 2. Llama Licker 1 says, I personally love the movie but like the book better than the movie. I also like the movie better in some ways because I can see the characters. Now Llama Licker 2 s opinion, I enjoyed the movie better than the book in many ways because I can see what s happening and seeing the characters helps me. Also, the book is better because I can understand how they are feeling. Next article will be the movie of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Ocean City New Jersey By: The Vacation Journalists Ocean City, Maryland is a very family- friendly beach for everyone to enjoy. Hotels can be spotted frequently throughout its long boardwalk, but amusement parks are also common. Now, when you think of the name, Ocean City, you think of the ocean and the beach of course. Although, that isn t what Ocean City Maryland necessarily is composed of. If you visit Ocean City, no two of your minutes will be spent doing the same thing. For the fun loving kids, there are many upbeat activities to enjoy such as miniature golf, arcades, go karts, water parks, ice skating rinks, fun houses that include humongous ball pits, dance clubs, zoos, and many, many more. For the adults who yearn to have a nice relaxing time there are day spas, shopping centers, movie theatres, and sightseeing cruises. If you are an adult who craves the same thrill as the kids though, there are numerous activities to do. Such activities Nintendo Land By: AB Nintendo Land is a new game for WiiU that allows you to play many of the Nintendo games from the original Donkey Kong to The Legend of Zelda. Three of the games-mario Chase, Luigi s Mansion, and Animal Crossing are multiplayer-only where you can not play by yourself. Octopus Dance, Donkey Kong, Yoshi s Fruit Cart, Captain Falcon s Twister Race, and many more are the solo games that you can only play by yourself. Page 5

6 David Blaine By: Daniel, Shawn, and Nathan. David Blaine is one of the best magicians in the world. He was born on April 4, You cannot see him do his performance because he does street magic. If you want you could watch his show, it is called Real or Magic. David is not just an illusionist. He is also an endurance artist. He holds several world records. One world record is that he was underwater for 17 min. and 4.5 sec. He also does private and charity appearances. One of his private appearances was that he performed for President Bill Clinton, secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, and President Bush. In conclusion, David Blaine is one of the best magicians in the world. Mexican Foods By: Raul, Dias, Chalupẽ There are many types of foods in the world, the galaxy, and the whole universe. But our favorite type of food is Mexican food. There are many Mexican foods but our favorite are tacos and Mexican pizza. So let us talk about tacos so you can learn more about them. Tacos are a type of Mexican food that can either have a hard or a soft shell on the outside. You can have many selections with tacos like meat, lettuce, beans, and cheese on the inside of the taco. Chicken tacos are another type of taco. They are filled with chicken on the inside. Now, let us talk in-depth about Mexican Pizzas. Mexican pizzas are not anything like regular slices of pizza. Mexican Pizzas are a type of food which has a nacho like shell filled with pieces of meat on the inside. Other toppings can be added like bacon, cheese, and lettuce. So if you ever stumble on any of these different types of food, always try them. Who knows, you may like it as much as we do! Hockey Player Of The Week by: Lee Lee and Sam Sam The hockey player of the week is Brooks Orpik. He is number 44 and is playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Orpik is six foot two inches tall and he weighs 219 pounds. He shoots left handed. His spouse is named Erin Lilly and he has one brother named Andrew Orpik. San Francisco, California is where Brooks Orpik was born on September 26, He is currently 33 years old. Orpik is a defensemen with ten years of experience. He will be playing with the penguins on a six year contract that pays $22,500,000. That is the hockey player of the week. Page 6

7 October Birthdays BY: Jenna, Hayley, and Carli In the month of November, there are five birthdays. So let s say Happy Birthday to. Alyson who was born Nov.1 st, and she would like an Iphone5s. Tyler B s birthday is Nov.3 rd, and he would like an Iphone5s for his birthday. Braeden who s birthday is the 20 th, and he would like a laptop for his birthday. Olivia G s was born on the 26 th, and she would like either an Iphone5s or Iphone5c. Last but not least, Brittany was born on the 30 th, and she wants an Iphone5s or iphone5c. Triple Chocolate Cake Prep Time 25 minutes Cook Time 30 minutes What you'll need Cake 1 package (18.25 oz.) Pillsbury Devils Food Cake 1 cup sour cream 3/4 cup water 1/3 cup oil 1/3 cup milk 3 large eggs 1 bar (4 oz.) milk chocolate, chopped Frosting 4 cups (1 lb.) powdered sugar 1 cup (6 oz.) white baking chips 1/2 cup butter, softened How to make it 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly spray two 9-inch round cake pans with no-stick cooking spray. Combine cake mix, sour cream, water, oil and eggs in large bowl at low speed until moistened; beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Gently fold in milk chocolate. Pour batter evenly into pans. 2. Bake 29 to 33 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool 15 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely. 3. Microwave white baking chips in large microwave-safe bowl on HIGH (100% power) for 90 seconds, stirring until all the chips have melted. Cool completely. Beat butter into cooled melted chips with electric mixer on medium speed until thoroughly combined. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, beating until fluffy. Beat in additional milk, by the teaspoon, until frosting reaches desired consistency. Place 1 layer bottom side up on serving plate. Spread 1/2 cup frosting over layer. Place remaining layer bottom side down on frosted layer. Frost sides and top of cake with remaining frosting. Garnish as desired.

8 Cookie Recipes By: Kelsey and Sarah Two quick and easy delicious cookie recipes to make!! Almond Snowball Cookies Total time: two hours and ten minutes Prep time: twenty minutes Inactive: one hour thirty minutes Cook time: twenty minutes The ingredients are ¾ sliced almonds. ¾ cup of sugar. ¾ unsalted butter, sliced and softened (1 ½ sticks). ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract. 1/8 teaspoon almond extract. 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour. ½ teaspoon fine salt. 1 cup confectioners sugar. Chewy Sugar Cookies Total time: thirty minutes Prep time: twenty minutes Cook time: ten minutes The ingredients are 2 ¾ all-purpose flour. 1 teaspoon baking soda. ½ teaspoon baking powder. 1 cup softened butter. 1 ½ cups white sugar. 1 egg. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk. Sprinkles or colored sugar, for decorating.

9 Best cookies ever ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar ¾ cup sugar 2 large eggs ½ cup oil 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup all- purpose flour 1 cup whole- wheat pastry flour ¾ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon fine salt 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chip or chunks 4 ounces dried cranberries or dried cherries DIRECTIONS Evenly position 2 racks in the middle of oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone sheets. (if you only have 1 baking sheet, let it cool completely between batches.) whisk the sugars, eggs, oil, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth. Whisk the flours, baking soda, and salt in another bowl. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a wooden spoon; take care not to over mix. Stir in the chocolate chips or chunks and dried fruit. Scoop heaping tablespoons of the dough onto the prepared pans. Bake until golden but soft in the center, about 12 to 14 minutes, depending on how chewy or crunchy you like your cookies. Transfer hot cookies with a spatula to a rack to cool. Store cookies in a tightly sealed container for up to 3 days.
