We have a few new options underway and from all accounts courses are going smoothly. February was a busy and eventful month and March will be much the same. The highlight has to be the Canadian Task Force mock disaster training exercise which saw 30 of our students participating as victims of the Trochu Mall collapse. The kids had an amazing time and are full of wonderful stories of their adventures. We posted a few pictures on our Facebook page. With almost 2000 views I assume you have had a chance to take a look. I hope to gather more pictures to share! Basketball is winding down and plans are coming together as we prepare to host senior girl Provincials on March Details have been posted on Facebook and within the newsletter. If you are able to help in any way please contact the tournament organizers and if you are not able to help be sure to stop in to see some great basketball in action! Our Lady Jays have had a great year and have earned their way into the provincial tournament! Go Jays! On March 3 rd Ms. Boese and I will be off to Strathmore to celebrate our school with a presentation to the school board. Levon Vokins has created an amazing video which will make its way onto our website in the next few days so keep an eye out for the video. As well, that afternoon Lee and Sandy Paley, hosts of the former TV show Ballooner Landing, will be putting on a show for our K-2 students. Any playschool students who would like to join us are more than welcome. Elementary report cards will come home the Thursday before Easter break and that is also the day of the high school ski trip. Have a wonderful March and I sure hope the recent snow is the last of it! In like a lion and out like a lamb, right??? Mrs. Howard Principal
2 Trochu Valley School would like to thank Ms. Mary Green for her generous donation to our Breakfast Program. This is such a popular program, offering toast, cheese whiz and juice to our students two mornings a week. This program depends entirely on donations and we really appreciate the support we have received from our community. Thanks again to Ms. Green and her thoughtful and generous donation. Thank You Parent Council!!! The February Hot Lunch on Friday, February 26 was absolutely delicious. The chicken, noodle, vegetable soup and grainy bread really hit the spot on a warm winter day. The many volunteers that take their time to organize, cook, serve and clean up the monthly hot lunches are greatly appreciated. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Buckeye Enterprises - Brian & Judy Buchanan for their very generous donations to our Junior B Boys Basketball team. We really appreciate your ongoing support of our students and sports programs. The team would also like to thank their Coaches: Jodi Nickason, Angie Fretz and Riley Franke for all their time and commitment to our team. It has been a Wonderful Year. 2

8 Trochu Valley is hosting the province, March 17-19, Come cheer on our girls as they attempt to defeat the top-ranked teams from around Alberta! Only one team leaves with provincial gold! Opening Ceremonies at 9am, Thursday, March 17, get the weekend off to a rousing start, with the first game underway at 10am. Tournament action begins at 8:30am Friday and Saturday, with the Championship Final scheduled for 7:30 Saturday night. Spectator admission fees are $25 for a weekend pass and $10 for a daily pass. Admission is free for children under 12. ASAA prohibits artificial noisemakers at provincial competitions. These include, but are not limited to: cow bells, horns, drums, garbage can lids, and plastic bottles filled with coins. So, come prepared to cheer loudly and proudly for the Lady Jays!! Watch the championship website for up-to-date tournament information: Sr Girls 1A Provincial Championship Website (control + click) 8
9 Volunteering and Cheering at TroVal's Provincial Tournament March 16-19th will be a very exciting time for our school and community, as Trochu Valley School will be hosting ASAA's 1A Girls' Basketball Provincials! This is the first time in many years that TroVal has hosted a tournament of this magnitude, which will not only be a special and memorable event for our students, but an opportunity to showcase our wonderful community to the province as well. It has been 37 years since TroVal last hosted a provincial tournament! Some of you might remember TroVal hosting 2A Volleyball provincials in the fall of 1979, when our boys lost in the finals after winning provincials the year before. We are grateful for the chance to put Trochu Valley School "on the map" once again, with teams from all over the province visiting our school, and enjoying what our community has to offer. The 2016 basketball tournament draw will be posted on March 14th; we hope you'll be able come and cheer on our local Jays! Our student volunteers and Golden Hills School Division technology team will also be providing live-streaming of each game, which you can view on the ASAA website (Alberta Schools' Athletic Association). As you know, it will take many volunteers to make this event possible: gate admission, videography, food preparation, team registration, player package organization, concession work, security, scorekeeping, and first aid are some of the tasks involved. Please consider giving a few hours of your time to help make our provincial journey a success. You can contact Cori Kary ( ) if you're interested in working gate admissions, or Elizabeth Hoppins ( ) to work in the concession. Or, contact any senior girls' basketball parent, and they would be happy to help make a plan! We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all the sponsors and volunteers who have already committed to this event. Our community spirit, sense of volunteerism and generosity is always second to none, and we are so grateful! 9
10 DRAFT POLICY FOR BILL 10 Recently, the Alberta Government amended the Education Act through Bill 10. Education Minister David Eggen has asked Alberta School Boards to draft a policy that supports students and reflects changes in the Alberta Human Rights Act and Bill 10. Golden Hills School Division No. 75 is currently working on a draft policy that aligns with these changes. In every Golden Hills School, it is our first priority that all students feel safe and accepted. We do not tolerate bullying and work hard to nurture classroom and school environments, which are not only accepting of diversity but are supportive and encouraging for all students. It is also important to us that all of our students know that the adults in the building care about their development and care about them as individuals. There have been many questions from parents regarding possible changes that may come from Bill 10. As a result, Golden Hills School Division will be holding community information meetings which will be coordinated with schools for the first and second weeks of March. Once dates are finalized they will be posted to school websites and social media. We want to give parents an opportunity to talk about our policies first hand and ask any questions in regards to the impact this may have in our schools. For more information go to our website or the Golden Hills School Division Website. BILL 10 COMMUNITY MEETING Monday, March 7 T Three Hills Parable Place at 7:00 pm Over the past number of weeks, there have been many questions from parents regarding possible changes that may come from Bill 10. In order to answer questions and share our approach to support students and provide a safe caring environment, Golden Hills School Division will be holding a number of community meetings for our parents across our district. We have tried to arrange meetings by area, but parents are welcome to attend any of the meetings that work best for them. In all of our schools, it is our first priority that all students feel safe and accepted. We do not tolerate bullying and work hard to nurture classroom and school environments which are not only accepting of diversity but are supportive and encouraging for all students. It is also important to us that all of our students know that the adults in the building care about their development and care about them as individuals. We look forward to seeing you in the weeks ahead and to being able to talk about our draft policy, hear your feedback and answer questions 10
