1 14 March 2018 No. 573 WEEKLY FOCUS For videos, images, links and more visit our website at Dear Parents Ambition is the path to success Weekly Theme Our weekly theme this week is ambition. We must support children to be ambitious, work hard, follow their dreams and to not give up when things get tough. There are virtually no famous people that haven t had it hard, who have been rejected and have had to overcome challenges and obstacles. Achieving your ambition and dreams is not a walk in the park and it starts now by doing well at junior school. Will Smith is famous for saying when others are sleeping I am working, working, working Ali Sparkes, famous author had over 20 books rejected before becoming successful Walt Disney was fired for having no imagination Elvis was told he couldn t sing Michael Jordon was dropped by his high school team You get the idea. We must aim high and go for our goals -never giving up when things don t run smoothly. Reach for the stars! Goodbye It is with sadness that we have to say goodbye to Miss Kynaston at the end of this term. She starts a new job after Easter in a school in Poole. We wish her lots of luck in her new job and thank her for all her hard work and Commitment. Miss Ball, an ex Calmore Infant teacher is taking over the class for the rest of the year. Absence If your child is absent for any reason, please phone and let the office know. There is an answer phone option, if your child is ill during the night or before the office opens. If we do not hear from you and we cannot get hold of you, then the absence will go as UNAUTHORISED. If your child has 10 unauthorised absences within 100 sessions (50 days or 10 weeks) then we will report it and you will be fined. Book of the Week Our book of the week this week is Journey along the Amazon by Alex Woolf and it is recommended by Miss Hayter. Follow a traveller's diary of a trip along the entire length of the Amazon, discovering all about the unusual animal and plant life, landscape features, climate, industry and peoples. Find out how to survive the perils of the Amazon: crocodiles, piranhas, leeches, whirlpools and rapids! Update your contacts! If you get a new mobile number or address, please please please remember to let us know! This newsletter and is a massive source of communication from school to parents and keeping you all up to date on everything that is happening in school. You may miss out if you don t update us! Sport Apologies that the Tag Rugby competition was cancelled by the organisers last Friday. It did turn out to rain very heavily though Congratulations to the athletics children that took part at Testwood on Saturday. They were very well behaved and showed great sportsmanship. Friday sees our year 5/6 Tag Rugby children entering a tournament and Saturday sees the year 3 and 4 children entering an athletics tournament. Good luck one and all. If your child is taking part in a sporting event during school, after school or on a Saturday it is crucial that you are contactable on the phone numbers given to school in case of an emergency, cancellation or other unforeseen circumstances. Staff are quite often taking these events in their own time. Even more so at the weekend, it s highly unfair if they are left hanging around waiting for late parents unable to contact them. Also if your child receives an invitation to take part in a sports event, please can you make sure that you return the reply slip promptly. This saves time and paper, as we have to keep chasing children to see if they can go.

2 World Book Day Thank you to all the children who dressed up on our reorganised World Book Day. It was lovely to see the children as different book characters. Thank you for your support in providing costumes. Don t forget to spend your 1.00 book voucher. CJSA - Chocolate non-uniform this Friday! The CJSA are very generous with their fundraising, donating various items, as well as money donated to each year group to help with trips, etc. Their next fundraiser is the Easter Raffle and Cake Sale (Tues 27 March) To help with this fundraiser the children have the opportunity to come into school this Friday 16 th March dressed in nonuniform in an exchange for chocolate items. This chocolate will be used for the Easter raffle, all chocolate donations gratefully received, however big or small. Thank you for supporting them to help your child. Sign Sing Mrs Betteridge has been running a sign sing club on Wednesday lunchtime where they learn to use British Sign Language.. They sang Bridge over Troubled Water and signed the words in assembly. It was incredibly moving and brought a tear to our eyes. Well done Year 5- it was fantastic. Mrs Betteridge is going to continue the club and is looking for new recruits! Sport Relief Next Friday 23 March is Sport Relief. We are asking children to wear PE kit and give a donation to Sport Relief. They will run a mile during the day so they are allowed to wear PE kit and trainers to school. Macmillan Cancer charity Anja Marshall s mum had all her hair shaved off last week, she raised 460 for this very worthwhile cause. Well done! Book Fayre Don t forget the bookshop will be here starting tomorrow - 15 March. You will be able to come into school to purchase books on the following days: Thursday 15 March pm Monday 19 March pm Tuesday 20 March pm Please come along and support us by buying a book. Every book you buy helps our school buy new books. You can even buy online before the fair and collect when you come in on the day! Just visit for more details! Brainteaser Last week s solution: What is the word that is spelt incorrectly in all dictionaries? LAST WEEKS CLASS ATTENDANCE WINNERS WERE: Hughes 99% Well done and keep up the good attendance! Our Learning Year 3 During English this week, we have been looking at a new book: Stone Age Boy. It is about a boy who ends up in the Stone Age after going through a portal. At the start of the week, we were using our inference skills to make predictions about the book. by the end of the week we would have had a focus on vocabulary including: synonyms and sentence starters. Next week, we will be writing in role as the main character and planning a diary entry of the things we got up to in the Stone Age. Fractions have been our focus in Maths this week and in particular equivalent fractions to a half. We have been working practically with folding paper to find halves and quarters and then moving onto thinking logically with the rule: a fraction is equivalent to a half when the numerator is half of the denominator. Next week we will be continuing equivalent fractions but with one quarter. To help at home it would be great if you could look at a world map with your child and locate different countries and where England is in the world. Year 4 This week we enjoyed an exciting trip to Southampton. We enjoyed the short coach trip into the centre where we walked around for a couple of hours exploring the old and newer parts of the city. We learnt about key events that happened in and around the city sketching and doing field studies. This week we will be spending our times in the afternoon exploring Southampton in more detail and discovering its similarity with other cities around the world. In maths our new learning journey through multiplication begins. Guided reading we are exploring the world of books and different genres. To help your child this week can you keep practising those timetables. Year 5 This week in literacy, we have been planning and writing our journey stories, using all the skills we have learnt in the past 2 weeks. They should be written by the end of the week and we are looking forward to sharing them with you at our Exit Point on Tuesday 27th March at 2.30pm! In literacy next week, we will be developing our descriptive writing skills. This week in maths, we have been developing our understanding of division. We have been using multiples to help us solve problems mentally and we have been using resources to help us learn how to do understand short division. Next week, we will be learning about decimals and how decimals link to fractions and percentages. In science this week, we have been doing lots of practical experiments to find out whether a change is reversible or irreversible. We really enjoyed mixing bicarbonate of soda with vinegar (apart from the smell!). Next week we will be learning about the processes of evaporation and condensation. Year 6 We ve had another busy and fun filled week that included a great trip to London yesterday and a visit to Shakespeare s Globe Theatre. We began by taking a tour of the theatre itself - sitting there it was easy to understand how it would have felt to have been at one of Shakespeare s plays. We then enjoyed an hour long drama workshop where we looked at the themes of love and hate before re-enacting the opening quarrel scene. Next we wandered around the Tate Modern and marvelled at some really cool art...and some rather odd pieces too. The day finished with a walk along the Thames where we saw the Shard, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge amongst so many other sights. For many of us it had been our first visit to the capital and was great to experience so many familiar landmarks. Back to school now though. Can t wait for Tile Barn!
