1 OCTOBER 11, 2013 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 7 Palestine Independent School District INSIDE THE ISSUE: Athletics Palestine high school Palestine Junior High A.M Story Intermediate school Southside Elementary School Northside Primary School Washington Early Childhood Center Support Service Palestine ISD will be closed for students and staff on Monday, October 14, 2013 in observance of the Columbus Day holiday. Enjoy the three day weekend! Produced by Palestine High School Printing and Imaging Technology: Ana Balderas Rozi Balderas I caught myself one day, after a football game, standing with the rest of the crowd with my finger wagging in the air to the PHS school song. Where I grew up in Georgia, we did not have a tradition like this one. My first few times going to a PHS football game I was taken aback and wondered what all these folks were doing. Now I catch myself doing it also. It s not so just the school song and the finger wagging tradition that are contagious however. PISD is Wildcat Weekly Message from Palestine ISD Board President, Wade Hobbs It s Contagious! contagious also. 5 A.M. Story Intermediate School Amanda Jackson: Principal TACE Program Our TACE after-school program is well underway. Students and teachers are enjoying the additional learning opportunities this grant provides us. Additionally, our parents have been involved as well. At the first parent meeting, Michelle Deal and Tupac Alcauter presented information about the program and helped parents complete an informational survey. This survey helps us offer programs and events that our parents feel would be of the most benefit to them. This week, our parents attended an interactive meeting. Mrs. Luce, our counselor, assisted our parents with accessing Skyward and navigating our district s webpage. Aloha, Ohana! Reading teachers recently celebrated the end of the first six weeks with a luau-themed DEAR time. Students wore their favorite Hawaiian styled shirt, along with leis and flip-flops. Story Style, Wildcat Way Story students enjoyed celebrating Homecoming. We love our Wildcats! PTA Activities Story PTA held its first meeting of the new year. It was well attended. Discussion was given regarding membership drive, fundraising event, and elections of officers. A great meal of pizza was also served. Our PTA is a definite asset to our campus. We appreciate their continued support of our activities.

8 Washington Early Childhood Center Rhonda Herrington: Principal PICTURE WITH SPARKY HIGH FIVE TO SPARKY Mrs. Hardin s class taking a picture with Sparky. FIRE SAFETY It is so important to teach children about fire safety. Fire safety needs to occur year round and with the help of our Palestine Fire Department it has become a priority through their annual Fire Prevention Program. The firefighters and Sparky helped the WECC students pay special attention to fire safety. Thanks to our Palestine Fire Fighters for reinforcing these basic concepts of fire safety to our students. They learned to call 911 for emergencies, the importance of having smoke detectors in your home, stop, drop and roll, crawling low under the smoke, do not play with matches, and many other important fire safety facts. STOP, DROP, AND ROLL Jakobe demonstrates the correct way to STOP, DROP, and ROLL as Mr. Carrizales class practices their fire safety. CRAWLING LOW Students practice crawling low when you see smoke and touching the door handle to see if it is COLD or HOT to either know to proceed out the door slowly or find another exit route.

9 Palestine ISD Support Services We started the Weekend Backpack program back up again this week. We meet the truck from East Texas Food Bank at the Court Drive Church of Christ, unload the back packs onto pick up trucks and transport over to Lone Pine Baptist Church to store until they are delivered on Friday to the schools in Anderson County. We had volunteers from the High School to help us out yesterday. Thank you to Jarrell Owens, Sheldon Watson and Brian Gummelt for helping us yesterday and to Coach Corb for driving them to the church. Your help was very much appreciated. NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK As a reminder, next week 10/14 10/18 is National School Lunch Week. We have posters up at all schools in the cafeterias. We will be serving some Texas favorites, like biscuits & gravy for breakfast and lunches will include Frito Pie (Frito s are made in Plano Texas) and Chicken Fried Steak. We will also have posters up of the local product we receive from our supplier Hardies, up in every cafeteria. Receiving local produce not only helps our local farmers, but it means the produce gets to us quickly and ensures freshness. Stop by and look at the poster showing the local Texas farms. You might be surprised how close some of them really are.
