Rhenishers Represent at Rio Rhenish Girls High is very proud to have two representatives at the 2016 Olympics that open next Friday (5 August 2016) in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. DOMINIQUE SCOTT-EFURD (Athletics, 10,000m) matriculated from Rhenish in Dom s personal-best times of 4:28 in the 1,500m, 9:40 in the 3,000m, and 34:28 in the 10K road race while still at school had garnered the attention of Lance Harter of Arkansas and she has spent the past four years studying at the university of Arkansas In May 2016, Dom smashed her 10,000m personal best to achieve the qualifying standard for the Rio Olympics. With a time of 31:56.84 she set the fastest time by a South African woman in nearly 16 years in the longest track event among some of the world s best distance runners. Dom finished her time with Arkansas shortly thereafter and has turned professional. On hearing of her inclusion in the South African Olympic team, Dom said, Hearing my name being announced as a member of the South African Olympic team for Rio was incredible. I m so excited to represent South Africa and my new sponsor Adidas at the Olympics. This is proof that all the many years of hard work and sacrifices were worth it. I owe all the glory to God who blessed me with my talent and love of running. I cannot wait to wear the green and gold! Roxy Burns (500m track paracycling) matriculated from Rhenish in Her cycling career started at the beginning of her high school career and her first international competition

was the Cerebral Palsy-International Sports and Recreation Association World Championships held in the USA in She hasn't looked back since. Roxy says, "I specialise in track cycling (para-cycling. There are five bicycle classes, C1 to C5, with C1 being the most severely disabled and C5 the least affected. She has recently been re-classed from C4 to C3. Roxy represented South Africa at the Beijing and London Paralympic Games and describes both as an amazing experience. "The atmosphere in especially London was electric and the stadium was packed. The crowd cheered for every single rider." She competes in the 500m time trial and 3 000m individual pursuit events on the track, but is specifically focusing on the 500m time trail event as that is where she believes she has the greatest chance of winning a medal. Her advice to other disabled athletes is, "Give your all and work as hard as you are able to get what you want." To follow Dom: or "like" her Facebook page Dominique Scott Athlete To follow Roxy: Silver Medalists It has been an incredibly exciting week for Rhenish 1 st team Hockey who have kicked off the start of the second half of the hockey season with great success in the Spur Cape Town International Hockey Festival. Captain, Monique Bartsch reflects on the Tournament: The U18 Cape Town International Hockey Festival started on Wednesday with the Rhenish team taking on the strong Pearson (Port Elizabeth) team on the WPCC astro. Although we led by two quick goals, it was a tough match, ending in a 2 all draw ultimately a satisfactory result. Our second match of Day 1 was at Hartleyvale against Millfield B, a visiting team from the UK. The match started in pouring rain and windy conditions and, at halftime, the Hartleyvale astro turf was almost unplayable. The Rhenish girls stood up to the challenge and won the match 3-0. Thursday morning started even earlier as the Rhenish girls departed from the school in the freezing darkness of a Cape

winter s morning. This time we faced a WP Invitational team at Bishops. We were immediately put under pressure by some fast running opposition, but, having conceded a goal, we slowly took control of the game to win the match 4-1. Day 3 started with an important match against Fairmont at the Pinelands astro turf. The team really started to play well, especially with the younger players immediately stepping up to the challenge. Rhenish won the match 2-0. We had to play our next match at Bishops so we had to hot foot it over to their astro, which did not give us much of a break. We recovered adequately to emerge victorious once again, this time against Bellville High School final score 3-1. Our final pool position secured us a top 8 (out of 24 teams) spot against our local neighbours and old rivals, Paarl Gymnasium, to compete for a semi-final spot. Our third match of the day started at a frenetic pace and our strong opponents scored within the first ten minutes. The Rhenish team again managed to consolidate and worked hard to gain some much needed possession and various opportunities one of which was converted just before half-time to draw level. With the team gaining in confidence, we eventually took the lead in the second half, with Paarl Gymnasium again equalising shortly thereafter, the match ending 2-2 in normal time. A nervewrecking one-on-one saw the Rhenish team, and Moya, hold their nerves and progress to the semi-finals! This was certainly a match that provided us with the much needed confidence and belief in ourselves that will surely focus our efforts in the remainder of the year. With Rhenish being the only remaining Boland team in the top 4, our supporter base grew for our semi-final match against another strong opponent Rustenburg Girls High - at Hartleyvale. We again conceded the first goal and had to dig deep against a physical opponent to score the well-deserved equaliser. The team responded to the constant direction from our coach on the side line to beat Rustenburg 2-1 and secure a spot in THE FINAL of the U18 Cape Town International Hockey Festival. The final against Kennemeer Lyceum a team from The Netherlands - was played in front of a large spectator base and the atmosphere was exhilarating. The highly skilled Dutch team played a high-paced open game of hockey maximising the width of the field. Whilst we created opportunities, it was the opposition who scored first and took a 1-0 lead into half-time. A well-executed move in the second half resulted in the Rhenish team s equaliser, to the enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. This wonderful, hard-fought match ended in disappointment as our opposition scored with 13 seconds remaining to win the match 2-1. Rhenish Girls High achieved the silver medal at the U18 Cape Town International Hockey Festival. Ending 2 nd out of 24 teams is truly something of which we can be proud. Well done to a wonderful team and a big thank you to Coach Martin, Ms Henery, Mrs Lombard and all the parents and supporters. Thank you also to Ms Slabber for supporting us in the finals.

Matric Dance 2016 Bubbling up from deep within A tale emerges, too wondrous to be told. And from the depths of magic there Bursts forth beauty, majestic to behold. Your eyes will sparkle, Your mind will marvel Tonight s the night, Prepare to dazzle! The theme, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was decided upon by the Matric Dance Committee as it promised to be both exciting and fun. And, it was. It was a visual and sensory experience that the Class of 2016 will not forget in a hurry. The matric dance journey started the day we handed out their beautiful invitations: a fortune cookie that promised to reveal the future to the recipient on finding their way to the matric grounds during break. Heady excitement had the matrics rushing to their quad at the start of break. While the matrics were running around buying shoes, finalizing plans with dates and designing and making dresses, the committee, with the support of parents, was working very hard behind the scenes. Backdrops were being painted, décor was being sourced and organized, food was being tasted and orders confirmed. The day finally arrived and months of careful planning were put into a hugely co-ordinated action plan. For the matrics, this amounted to carefully co-ordinated appointments for hair, nails, makeup, photos and a host of other things, while the waitresses and the committee arrived at the Town Hall bright and early to ensure that the final product was as spectacular as we had first imagined. Tables were set with beautiful centerpieces, the foyer was decorated and great attention was given to every detail to ensure that the Grade 12s had a night of special memories that would last a lifetime. After being transported to the dance at the Stellenbosch Town Hall in stylish, elegant, quirky and vintage cars, the beautiful Matrics of 2016 and their handsome partners graced the red carpet and thrilled the crowds. The entrance to the Town Hall was a magical tunnel of delicate lights and as the couples exited from this tunnel into the main foyer, they stepped into Mr Wonka s magical world of sweets, chocolate fountains, popcorn, candy floss and fantastic scenes that set the atmosphere and tone for the evening. Incredulous at the décor and sensory delights of the chocolate factory, the matrics made their way into the main ballroom which had been transformed with a black and white theme, highlighted with long strings of fairy lights and found their tables,

decorated with wire baobab trees hanging with sweets of all colours, shapes and description. The mood was set for a fantastical night of photographs, delicious food, dancing and fun. The success of the evening was due to all the girls and parents who worked together with determination and commitment, and, especially, Ms Fourie who really made the whole evening come together. We hope that the Matrics of 2016 had a very special evening and that they will cherish it forever. Natalie Kitching 11E

Consumer Classroom Revamp While the rest of the school was on holiday, a group of very busy worker bees were creatively remodeling the Consumer Studies classroom. A project that has long been in the pipeline has finally become a reality and the Consumer Studies girls and Mrs Fourie are delighted with the result. May many tasty tidbits be created in this thoroughly modern kitchen! WCED SPEECH COMPETITION Maria Stallmann achieved 2 nd place at the Provincial round of the WCED Speech Competition. Her thought-provoking speech YOLO provided insight into how we spend our time. Sixteen speakers from 8 districts participated in this annual competition. Congratulations, Maria, on this outstanding achievement.

Job Shadowing Grade: A very real experience! Excitement characterised the Life Orientation classes during the first week of term as learners shared their stories about three days of working, waiting and wondering in the world of adults and the world of work. For some, the career that they shadowed is the last thing they would ever do, for others the three days confirmed that it was exactly the type of job they would like to have one day. At the end of the second term, when most learners were preparing to go on holiday, the Grade 11s left their textbooks at home, learnt how to catch MyCiti buses, gathered information from strangers, sat in meetings and even stepped into operating and emergency wards. We have heard of learners who were part of intricate operations, a learner who was the first girl in a factory to use welding machinery and plasma cutting, others who attended fashion week and some who got to see clearly how Brexit influenced the stock market. Although individual experiences earmarked the uniqueness of the Grade 11 group, the common denominator was the dedication with which they tackled this task. This became evident especially in the feedback of professionals in our community who commented that they, while they were not particularly enthusiastic to give of their time initially, they had been won over once they saw the work ethic of the learners. Ms Olivia Parker-Saville, Media Liaison Officer to the Honorary Speaker SG Fernandez, said the following about RGHS and Chiara Jeptha in 11 A. Ms Jeptha is by far a sterling ambassador of her school and an aspiring public servant. She has certainly set the bar high for future shadowers. It would be a privilege to host any student from your school who is interested in the legislative sector in future, for like programmes. A father described the experience and his daughter s ability to face her own fears as an eye-opener and an incredible opportunity for personal growth. For him, she came into her own as she tackled the many challenges that adults take for granted and it helped him to see her in a different light as she told him about her days at the office! The Life Orientation Department would like to thank Ms Slabber, the staff, the greater Stellenbosch and surrounding community as well as the parents for allowing the learners to take off the three days and take on the challenges that lie beyond the classroom walls, albeit for three days. Mrs Christelle Pretorius (Grade 11 LO teacher) Mandela Day Ana Sampson, Catherine Totten, Megan Nel and Jazz Mallam went into Stellenbosch to spread some love on Nelson Mandela's birthday. We bought a few loaves of bread and lots of cookies to hand out to the hungry, homeless and even to the local Stellenbosch people. Our mission reinforced our sense of gratitude for our own good fortune and we were humbled by the experience and grateful to be in a position of being able to give back to the community. Jazz Mallam

Rhenish Writing Lab Launch The importance and necessity of academic writing was celebrated in a fun way where high school learners wrote arguments and counter-arguments on the wall of the school hall at the launch of the Rhenish Writing Lab on Wednesday 20 July. This joint venture between the Writing Lab of the University of Stellenbosch and Rhenish Girls High School is a pilot project with a long-term goal of establishing writing laboratories and lifting the standard of academic writing at various high schools in and around Stellenbosch. Topics such as Celebrities are overpaid, arrogant and uneducated and It s not right that some learners in South Africa have ipads and some don t even have textbooks to learn from in school, therefore, NO South African learner should have an ipad until ALL learners have access to textbooks

adorned the walls of the Ebenezer Hall while Grade 10 and 11 learners mingled, discussed and expressed their sentiments. Visiting guests, Prof Leon de Stadler (Director of the Language Centre at the university), Dr Rose Richards (head of English at the Writing Lab), Sharifa Daniels (head of Afrikaans at the Lab) as well as Anne-Mari Lackay were impressed with the quality of the arguments and the enthusiastic and informal way in which the learners embraced the opportunity. Ms Helmien Slabber, Principal of RGHS, and most of the Rhenish staff mingled with and encouraged the learners. A short, informative video put together by one of the participating writing lab teachers, Mrs Lisa de Villiers, proved that most careers, from a clinical psychologist to a travel writer, sustainability manager, to an environmental scientist and video editor require effective writing skills. As one of them remarked, I am sure that the biggest reason why I was employed by a certain well-known upmarket company, was because I could write relatively well! Although the Writing Lab Road Show was attention-grabbing, the real proof of the success of this venture will be when consultants (Grade 10 to 12 learners and a small group of interested teachers, who will be trained by the Writing Lab at the University) are able to help clients (other learners) who want to improve their writing. Even though all of the consulting is to happen within normal day-to-day teaching, the school is thankful for and excited about the opportunity of helping learners write more effectively and bridging the gap between secondary and tertiary education. Mrs Christelle Pretorious A CHORAL CELEBRATION 2016 Another successful event took place this week as the Music Department once again presented the annual Junior and Senior Choral evenings. On Wednesday evening the following choirs sang: Rhenish Primary, Laerskool Eikestad, Laërskool De Hoop and Laerskool Stellenbosch. The highlight was the mass choir when 250 learners stood on stage and sang: He s got the whole world in His hands. The blessing was when all parents joined in and the evening ended on a high note! On Thursday evening the following choirs participated: Paul Roos Gymnasium, Makupula High, Hoërskool Stellenbosch and Rhenish Girls High. Once again the evening culminated in an exhilarating mass choir when 300 teenagers sang: When you walk through a storm. Once again the audience joined in and everyone left being blessed and grateful for the gift of music.

Match Reports 2 nd Team vs Parel Vallei This was a very physical game and, given the occasional downpours, not the most pleasant of conditions in which to play. The game was a very close one which ended in a 2 2 finish. There were constant break aways and tons of movement up and down the field. The match was a great challenge and the 2 nd team is proud to have held down the fort without conceding a loss. Rachel Leach U16A Hockey After a long holiday, our team was still able to connect and play well together against PV. With all the talent in our team we were able to dominate most of the game. They had a very strong goal keeper who saved most of our potential goals. Luckily, in the second half, we were able to sneak in 3 goals which led to a victory of 3-0. The team had some tough results but good performances in the first half of the season, and we continued to believe in what we were doing and to work hard and it was great to see that all pay off as the results started coming in. Our highlights of the tournament included beating one of our big rivals Paarl Gym in our first knock-out game, with a great performance from Moya Smith (South African u17a goal keeper) to help us through to the semi finals. The final was against an absolute quality Dutch touring club side and we gave it our all. Although the result didn't go our way we learnt a lot and really enjoyed being part of the final.
