Each House developed their own presentation of the song, Good Night and the Prep to Year 2 audience very much enjoyed the final performances. Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 House Music trophy Alexander! Catherine Spehr, Head of Music I think that House Music was a big success. Everyone participated and had fun. That was, in my eyes, better than winning - even though we won in the end! It was great to see a smile on everyone s faces; that is what winning is to me. James Sachinidis 6H (Alexander House Music Captain) House Music is about leading and helping the other students enjoy in the fun of making their actual performance. I felt like I ve earned someone s trust and succeeded when I have helped others. As House Music Captain, not only was it good to win, but as I m very passionate about music it felt wonderful standing up there and having Alexander House next to me. I would like to thank Miss Spehr, the other houses for participating, the class teachers who helped during rehearsals, the judges and the students in Alexander House. Vivienne McGlashan 6H (Alexander House Music Captain) Toorak Campus, Geelong Grammar School, 14 Douglas Street, Toorak, 3142 Tel:

Page2 From the Head of Campus What a busy time we have had on campus since the midterm break. Last Friday started off will the ELC Athletics morning a fantastic opportunity for parents, family and friends to watch and cheer on their children. I am grateful to the Year 4 students who volunteered to help with the individual events, supporting the ELC children. It was a spectacular morning. This was followed by the House Music competition in the afternoon. The enthusiasm and participation levels were extremely high, so congratulations to all of the students, especially Alexander House that ended up as the winners. On a more sombre note, we held our Remembrance Service on Tuesday morning by the flag pole. Each year I am so impressed by the way our Year 6 students take on their roles and lead our community in remembering those that made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country. There was a fly past by some macchi jets, which added to the mood of the event. $510 was raised through the selling of poppies for the Toorak RSL which is a fantastic effort. Thank you to those parents who were able to attend and support our community at this time. Over the past few weeks we have been lucky enough to have visits from our Principal, Stephen Meek and our Vice- Principal, Charlie Scudamore. It is wonderful for the students to be able to spend time with them, whether it is helping out in the Children s Garden or decorating hats for the Mad Hatter s Tea Party as part of the P 2 Production. Yesterday, Year 3 departed on their camp to Waratah Bay. I know they were all very excited and were looking forward to the camp and we will no doubt hear all about in next week through photos and reflections. Next week Year 6 will be attending their final camp at this campus when they go to Wilsons Promontory. I was delighted to attend the Informal Concert on Monday afternoon. There was a large number of performers and they are all to be congratulated on their participation and standard. I would also like to thank Justine Siedle for performing on the violin for our enjoyment and appreciation. I was also very impressed to see Miss Spehr perform on the violin. This is not one of her instruments and after only a small amount of lessons, she played a duet with Emma Rudin. If there ever was an example of risk-taking, this was it. Catherine role-modelled this learner profile so well for all the students to see and, I hope, appreciate. It served as a good reminder to us all that taking risks is an important thing to do and something from which valuable lessons can be learned and appreciated. The Prep to Year 2 children continue to work their way towards their performances of In Wonderland with zest and enthusiasm. It is such a bonus each day for me to feel the sense of excitement building and watching the odd rehearsal from the wings. I am really looking forward to seeing it all come to fruition on 3rd and 4th December. Garry Pierson REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: TOORAK CAMPUS

Page3 VISITORS FROM THE CORIO CAMPUS Prep J enjoyed a visit during Art from Vice Principal Charlie Scudamore. As a link to the Alice in Wonderland drama production theme he joined them in decorating their hats for the 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party. I had a lovely chat today with Mr Meek in the Children s Garden. I was telling him about the different vegetables we planted, including beetroot and leeks. Mr Meek did some planting and we gave him some broad beans, two artichokes and some cauliflower to take back to Corio. I really enjoyed seeing Mr Meek and planting in the garden with him! - Campbell Barras, Year 2A (Stephen Meek, Principal and Campbell Barras, pictured left)

Page6 LIBRARY NEWS What s been happening in Library Research? The Preps are learning about the importance of oral storytelling in Aboriginal culture. They re using the ipad app Aurasma to retell some ancient Aboriginal stories. The Year 1s are analysing a variety of narratives as well as creating their own stories using story cubes and ipads. The Year 2s are practising their research skills by using a variety of sources such as Britannica Online Encyclopaedia and non-fiction books. The Year 3s are focussing on the first three steps of the research process. They have used a variety of tools to help them take notes. The Year 4s are learning how to use Instagrok, a Web 2.0 tool to research. This online resource uses a concept map to explore topics. It saves previous searches, compiles a bibliography and allows students to take notes in a journal. The Year 5s have just completed a unit on Scratch, a programming language, where they created their own interactive games and animations. The Year 6s are completing The Giant Classroom Online Primary Research Project. This is an excellent project, giving students the opportunity to practise and celebrate their research skills. Premiers Reading Challenge The certificates have arrived! Students will receive their certificates at their Browse and Borrow class next week. Well done to all of those students who completed the challenge. Stocktake! It s that time of year again! Over the forthcoming weeks we will be issuing students with overdue slips. We would appreciate your assistance in returning all books before the last week of the term. Fiona O'Rourke Teacher Librarian

Page7 YEAR 4: JAPANESE KYUUSHOKU DAY Kyuushoku is the lunch that Japanese schools provide for their students. I enjoyed making the miso soup with my group. I think that Kyuushoku is fun to make and is very healthy. Kyuushoku is a good idea because it makes sure all the children have a healthy lunch. - Jessica When we were making the Kyushoku lunch we had to have very strict hygiene. - Theo It was so fun, because we got to prepare foods and the foods were delicious. - John I wish we had the same foods (Kyuushoku lunch) as they do in Japan. - Albert Japanese Kyuushoku lunches are designed so that the children understand good health and proper table manners. I enjoyed making the food and serving it. I learned that you cannot start eating until everyone else is ready to eat and that you have to say Itadakimas together. - Eliza We made chicken teriyaki which is makes our muscles strong, we had milk which makes our bones strong and we had veggies and fruits that give us essential vitamins. I made the miso soup with Josh and Theo. I enjoyed eating the miso soup as I do not get to have it often. - Oliver I enjoyed cooking the Kyushoku lunch, because we learned how to be independent and it was a lots of fun. - Maxwell Kyushoku is a nutritious Japanese school lunch. I enjoyed eating the rice, teriyaki chicken, miso soup, vegies and fruits. We all wore masks for our mouth, bandanas for our heads and an apron. We concentrated on cutting and serving all foods ourselves. I enjoyed eating Kyushoku with my friends. - Harrison Misako Pranatio, Head of Japanese YEAR 3: INQUIRY IN THE ARTROOM This term in the Artroom, the Year 3 students have been looking at Ancient Civilisations, in relation to the Unit with the central idea: Evidence of past civilisations are still evident today. Specifically, the students looked at Greek vases to learn about how the Greeks lived in the past, specifically observing what images they depicted on the vases. They looked at the designs, watched a video and copied the shapes and patterns depicted into their art books. They learned that some of the motifs, such as the soldiers and horses, represent the fighting that took place in the Trojan War. People made the vases to carry water and oil. - Millie Morrison The Greeks drew a lot of animals. - Hugh O Brien They used the vases to record stories, such as the Olympics, wars and inventions. - Alex, Henry, Zhi Tao and Peter From the drawn copies of the vases, the students made large paper cut outs and designed their own vase to make out of clay. They used different methods to make the vases that the ancient Greeks would have used and learned that it took a while to make a vase (thus patience was required!) While the clay pots were drying, the students further reflected on the vases that the Ancient Greeks made, through the lens of the Positive Education character strengths. These are some of the suggestions they came up with: In the Greek pots, I can see beauty, because they are old and precious. - Milla Naylor (Appreciation of Beauty) They are grateful for winning the war, so they put everything into it. - Cristina Lau (Gratitude) The aspect of creativity was the waves on the top of vase that represents the sea and the white showing is the light shining on the water. - Jasper Kirkwood (Creativity) I think it was funny that they could not draw clothes. - Alex Shears-Jones (Humour) I see the aspect of bravery on the vases because the men were brave that they went to war having lots of pictures of Spartans winning battles. - Lachlan Gance (Bravery) The aspect of teamwork and loyalty I see is that when you march to war to invade and defend their country for their King. - Teddy Stewart (Teamwork and Loyalty) Justine Siedle Art Teacher

Page8 MINDFULNESS CLASSES A wonderful gift may not be wrapped as you expect. - Jonathon Lockwood Huie Before we know it time will slide us into Christmas, with all its wonderful connections, customs and presents. The quote by Jonathon Lockwood Huie, A wonderful gift may not be wrapped as you expect, was a catalyst for the students to enthusiastically share the speaking stick and discussions about gifts! Students reflected on how some gifts/presents do not last: they are eaten, can be lost or broken and may not be interesting or appealing after a while. I was deeply touched by the sensitive and insightful reflections from some very young students. Gradually the board became filled with their contributions. Lists of enduring gifts, that do not have a $ value, developed under the headings of love and connection, nature, the gifts of the senses, intellect and movement, creativity and faith. Awareness grew of the gifts and blessings to be noticed, appreciated, shared and enjoyed every day. Contrasting gifts of yoga and mindful movement were enjoyed, followed with the gifts of time and space on the Meditation Quilt to share silent sitting and lying down practices. A glass lantern was the focus for the Year 5 and 6 Mindfulness classes. Laurence Fishburne s quote, We are three dimensional beings: body, mind and spirit linked in to the Mindful Star project from Term 1. The candle in the lantern was a symbol for our spirit and we pondered how it is possible to become disconnected from this source of inspiration by others and our own habits of mind : attitudes and beliefs. Recognition of these limiting possibilities was recorded with stick-it notes to the glass, which obscured the light of the candle. In time the warmth of the candle gradually melted the adhesion of the notes, providing a beautiful metaphor of the power of compassion and kindness to melt and dissolve barriers to thriving! Thank you to the parents who came to the Mindfulness Practices Session on Tuesday morning: a range of possibilities and opportunities to apply mindfulness were discussed. These included: practices in the car, creative possibilities to enliven homework, skills to diffuse stress and conflicts, practices to enhance focus and support healthy sleep habits. May Christmas and the summer holidays be filled with all kinds of blessings and gifts best wishes to all the Toorak GGS staff, parents and students! Janet Etty-Leal Author, Speaker, Mindfulness Educator and Registered Teacher GLAMORGAN ASSOCIATION NEWS Sausage Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall Victorian State Election Day Volunteers Required! Our campus is a nominated Polling Booth for the upcoming State Election on Saturday 29th November and the Parents Association are holding a Sausage Sizzle and Bake Stall from 9am - 2pm as a Fundraiser on the day. We are setting up a roster of a one hour commitment per person to help out on the stall and would love to hear from parents if you can volunteer your time. Thank you to those who have volunteered already. We held a similar stall for last year's Federal Election in September and it was a great success. We will be starting off the morning with bacon and egg muffins, kindly donated by the Kelly Family. Woodfrog Bakery are again donating bread rolls for the Sausage Sizzle and Hudson Meats will supply the sausages. We are seeking contributions from the school community for our Bake Stall such as cakes, cupcakes, brownies, muffins and slices. Please ensure that the goods are nut free (including no nut flour) and do not have any fresh dairy ingredients (such as cream or cream cheese) which require refrigeration. These items would be required to be dropped off at the school office on disposable plates/containers covered in clear cling wrap on Friday 28th November by 3.45pm. Please label all ingredients clearly. Please contact Rachael Kelly on or rachael.kelly@kellycogroup.com.au if you can assist on the day or if you have any queries regarding the above. Annual General Meeting The Association's Annual General Meeting will be held next Friday 21st November, 8.45am, in the Cottage. This will be followed by our normal committee meeting. All are welcome - please contact myself ( ) or Sue Lester, Secretary ( ) if you would like to attend. Denise Wong, President
