10 Society of St. Vincent de Paul The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organization of lay persons who wish to live their faith by loving and serving as Jesus did. It was founded by Frederic Ozanam, a 20 year old college student, and his companions to bear witness to the Church and the mission it received from Jesus. The Society derives its name from St. Vincent de Paul s thinking and work. It seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity and by the person-to-person involvement of its members, to help those who are needy and suffering. It serves everyone regardless of creed, color, opinion, or origin. The primary role of the Vincentian is not to pay the bills, furnish the groceries, or clothe someone. The role of the Vincentian is to provide loving and compassionate interest in individuals. If that interest calls for food, clothing, or other assistance, so be it. However, it is loving where the contact with Christ emerges. That contact with Christ is what separates the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from just another agency. OLA THROUGH ITS SVdP MINISTRIES PROCLAIMS AND SERVES Recently, after a routine blood test at Mercy San Juan Hospital, a SVdP volunteer was greeted by one of the employees during a shift change. As the employee was warmly saying hello, her expression changed and she said, I know you? Dressed in her hospital blues complete with shower cap, she was unrecognizable. The Vincentian, trying to find a common ground, mentioned OLA. The woman shook her head, No, but had a very puzzled expression on her face. She turned to walk away but suddenly looked back and said, The Food Locker you have a Food Locker. She then revealed that three and a half years earlier she and her husband were out of work, had lost their home, and were desolate. They came to the Food Locker and she shared that it was their salvation. They have never forgotten what OLA through OLA s SVdP Food Locker and Home Visit Ministries did for them. You all saved us. Look at me now. I m working here; my husband has a wonderful job; we live in Forest Hills. You gave us hope and assistance. We pray for all of you every night and bless you every day. Thank you. The OLA Conference provides these services for the needy living in the OLA parish area: Emergency Assistance which includes: o Rent o Utilities o Clothing o Furniture o Infant and children s needs Operation of a twice weekly Food Locker Volunteer Opportunities: Home Visitation teams: o Respond to phone requests o Visit clients in their homes o Determine extent of OLA help to be given o Assist clients in researching other available resources Food Locker teams: o Pick up and deliver goods to Food Locker o Shelve goods o Work in Locker on service days to distribute food to clients
