It has been a treat to see the students enthusiasm in celebrating the week. Tomorrow, the festivities will conclude with St. Paul green and white day. Students are encouraged to wear St. Paul t-shirts and green and white to show their school spirit. The day will end with our annual pep assembly at 2:00 to acknowledge and wish our boys and girls basketball team the best of luck as they head into tournament play beginning night. This weekend, we host the annual St. Paul Tournament of Excellence. We welcome six other Catholic schools from throughout our state to Eugene for the weekend to participate in games, free-throw and three-point contests, Mass, a special breakfast for all players and coaches, and a dance on Saturday night. It is a great weekend to build camaraderie amongst our Catholic schools and I m delighted that we are able to host this event for the students. On multiple occasions, I have heard from parents and principals of participating schools letting me know how much this weekend is a highlight for their students. Many thanks to everyone who is pitching in to help us with this year s tournament, especially Tournament Director, Marty Hopkins. Included in this edition of the Voyager is your guide to the tournament. I encourage you to journey to Marist Catholic High School this weekend to come cheer on our teams and see first-hand the excitement of the tournament. Feb 20 NO SCHOOL Elementary Professional Development Feb 22 Pizza Night at Roaring Rapids for Project Starfish 5:00-8:00 pm Feb. 15, 2018 St. Paul Parish School 1201 Satre Street Eugene, OR school.org Enjoying Spirit Week!! Did you know that the last time Valentine s Day and Ash Wednesday happened on the same day was back in 1945? Thank you for your flexibility with moving our celebration of Valentine s Day to Tuesday in order for us to fully participate in Ash Wednesday. Many thanks to the first and fifth graders for hosting Mass yesterday. They did a wonderful job and we received many positive compliments from our parishioners. Each year as we help our students journey through the season of Lent we dedicate 10 minutes of our school day to quiet. Our goal is to help them find silence in their lives to pray, to hear God s voice and listen to His love. This year our theme is Walk on God s Path in Lent, Grow in Holy Silence. Our religion specialist, Mrs. Bricher, has prepared Lenten materials to help students focus on the theme. She has also prepared material for you to help your families grow in holy silence this season which is included in this edition of the Voyager along with our 10 minutes of quiet and Station of the Cross schedule. Please know that during these minutes phones will be shut off, the outside door to the office will be locked, and the entire school will be asked to be still and silent. I encourage you to join us in this journey and join us in 10 minutes of quiet wherever you are at in your day. In Christ s Peace, Kelli Braud

3 St. Paul Parish School Lent 2018, Bringing It Home Family Newsletter Grow in Holy Silence We need to find God, and He cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. Mother Teresa Week of Ash Wednesday What is Holy Silence? * Being still and quiet in our hearts so that we can sense God s presence * Letting go of complaining, explaining, comparing and plotting about things * Opening our hearts and minds to notice and really listen to others * Avoiding or ignoring outside noises that take our attention off of God Why Holy Silence? Without silence, we cannot know ourselves. Without silence, we cannot listen to others. Without silence, we cannot be open to God. It is in a heart filled with Holy Silence that we can hear God s voice, listen to His love, and choose to respond to it. Silence is so much more than just being quiet and not talking. Holy silence is an attitude of listening. It is a quietness that goes all the way to our hearts and minds. It is an attitude of friendship, of truly seeking to understand another. Holy Silence is filled with God. Holy Silence helps us pay attention and dig deeper for understanding. Holy Silence stills our fears and quiets our complaints. Holy Silence helps us build our trust in God s timing and deepens our humility in the face of God s great majesty. Robert Cardinal Sarah, The Power of Silence Silence is not sought for its own sake but, rather, for the space it makes. Silence allows us to perceive better and to hear better; it opens our inner space. (Page 202)

4 St. Paul Parish School Week of Ash Wednesday We begin Lent by receiving ashes on our forehead, as a sign of our need to repent and grow. Our 2018 Lenten season s theme is Grow in Holy Silence. We hope that your family can also walk on God s Path this Lent by working on building Holy Silence in your home. This week, our focus is defining Holy Silence and making some decisions about what kinds of noise we need to get rid of. By waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust shall be your strength. (Isaiah 30:15) Grow in Holy Silence Things to do in your home this week: 1. Spend time defining Holy Silence together, writing down descriptions, definitions and ideas. Help your child understand the difference between Holy Silence (an attitude of friendship and listening to God) and the silence of indifference, anger, boredom or despair. Contrast Holy Silence that focuses on listening to God with notions of mindfulness in our culture that focuses on emptiness or focusing on self, not God. 2. Discuss what types of noises interfere with our Holy Silence. Consider interior noise (inside our hearts and thoughts) and exterior noise (outside noises that distract us). How can we have some times of silence in our home? How can parents model silence by reducing cell phone/screen distractions during family time? How can we deal with distractions in a positive manner (by acknowledging the distraction and then gently refocusing on God)? 3. Explore more ideas for Lent at the following websites: U.S. Bishop s website has a lot of resources for Lent: Bishop Robert Barron at Busted Halo has a great Lent in 3 Minutes video: Sign up for Lenten messages each day with Matthew Kelly: 4. Establish a silent prayer time of 1-2 minutes after a Bible reading (try the Gospel for each day, you can find it at the U.S. Bishop s website) each day. Work up to 5 minutes.
