1 March 2018 Pennsauken School News Carson and Baldwin School News Carson students participated in their annual Vocabulary Hat parade as part of our Read Across America celebration. The week long event motivated and excited students to read and participate in a range of literacy activities. April 2018 Events April 2-6: NO SCHOOL April 11: Baldwin Picture Day April 12: Carson Brain Drain GT contest April 13: Carson Gifted 4th Grade Brain Drain Competition April 13: Carson Sadeky Puppet Show April 16: Carson Student of the Month Assemblies 2:00 and 2:45 April 17: Carson 2nd Gr Zoo Trip and Baldwin Jack and the Beanstalk Show March Multiplication Madness Final Four Tournament! Carson s 4th grade students, who qualified by demonstrating speed and accuracy of their multiplication facts, participated in the 2nd Annual tournament. The teams (Kansas, Loyola Chicago, Michigan and Villanova) were challenged with basketball themed tasks such as Foul Shot Shoot Out and Random Factors Shoot Out. All of the tasks required students to demonstrate their multiplication knowledge. Winner Michigan! April 18: Carson Babies Event & Baldwin Chick-fil-a Day April 19: Half Day 1:30 Dismissal. All Pre-K all students attend 8:50am-11:20am April 20: Carson Report Cards BALDWIN SCHOOL Pre-K families enjoyed a Parent Involvement Night with literacy activities that centered around the book, I f You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Activities were followed by pizza and treats. All children received a book! 2 April Upcoming Events Dear Roosevelt Families, Hello and happy March! Spring is around the corner and learning is in full swing here at Roosevelt Elementary School. As you may know, this time of year the students make the most academic and social learning gains. It is also an important time for reminders about healthfulness as we want all children here everyday, on time and maximizing their full potential. Thank you to all who attended the Sweetheart Dance. It was awesome to see such a great turnout and the students seemed to have a blast! I hope to see you at our PTO Book Bingo night. On March 17th, we celebrated St. Patrick s Day, which is the traditional religious feast day of St. Patrick and the day he is believed to have died in 460 A.D. St. Patrick is the beloved patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick's Day celebrations continue to be a show of Irish strength and patriotism. 4th Grade Students honored Black Historic figures. April Upcoming Events 4/2 4/6 Spring Break!! 4/19 Early Dismissal Ms. Pamela Grant, Kindergarten Mrs. Terri Laverty, Second Grade Ms. Grant is a hardworking teacher and goes beyond what is expected of her. She is also very helpful to her colleagues and always accommodating to everyone. Despite of her situations outside of work, she manages to put others first before herself. The second teacher nominated was Mrs. Laverty. One reason is because she individually greets her students each morning as they enter the classroom. Mrs. Laverty is very approachable and always has a smile on her face. She is very calm and keeps her composure during situations that arise. March Newsletter Franklin celebrated Read Across America Week in style. We kicked off our fantastic week with an assembly including a surprise from our favorite character Cat in the Hat! We went on to have character dress up day, crazy sock day, hat day, and wacky Wednesday. Although the snowstorm came, it did not break our reading spirit. Each day at 2:40 we dropped everything we were doing, and read as a school in the hallways. The students enjoyed all the activities and we look forward to next year s celebration.. These schools included Pennsauken High School, Delair elementary School, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, and our very own Pennsauken Intermediate School! Our school alone had 2 different teams playing in the tournament. The white team included Mr. Hood (6th Grade Math Teacher), Mr. Basileo (Long Term Substitute), Mr. Drummonds (6th grade ELA), Mrs. Wetzel (Gym teacher), and Mr. Midora (Vice Principal). The red team included Ms. Killion (Science teacher), Ms. Barker (Gym teacher), Mr. Jackson (Gym teacher), Mr. Crowley (NTA), and Mr. Bernard (Special Ed Teacher). Our first team (white team) lost in the second round and our All Star team (red team) lost in the semi-finals to the High School team, who eventually won the entire tournament. Each team had 3 players on the court at a time.the Intermediate s best players were Ms. Barker and Ms. Killion. They scored many of our team s points. Family, Friends, and students went to support and cheer on their favorite teachers and staff. Even teachers came to the game to cheer on their school team. Both students and teachers even made signs to support their team. The games were from 6:00 to 8:00pm, were held in the Pennsauken High School gym, and was free to anyone who wanted to come. 5 Pennsauken Spring Athletes Bond on a Winter Day On Friday, March 2nd, Pennsauken High School spring athletes and coaches invited the Phifer student coaches and athletes to Hylton Road in order to have a spring kickoff like no other. Under the leadership of Athletic Director, Eric Mossop and Superintendent Ronnie Tarchichi, Pennsauken athletes played team building games together in the PHS gymnasium after school, ate pizza and toured the updated athletic facilities. This took place all while the wintery elements outside wreaked havoc for Friday commuters. In an effort to showcase the great high school coaches and athletic programs, Mr. Mossop wanted to help middle school athletes realize the greatness on the horizon as they quickly approach high school sports. Students were bussed from Phifer Middle School to PHS in order to meet their respective sport coaches, mingle with athletes and play bonding games in the gym. Acclaimed volleyball coach and Phifer teacher, Jack Killion mc d the event which had athletes relay race and tug-of-war while students and parents looked on. Each sport rotated through an eating station and tour of facilities before getting on a 6pm perimeter bus home on a snowy Friday night. Many student-athletes enjoyed the bonding opportunity as well as the knowledge gained about the PHS athletic programs. Coaches inspired all athletes with smaller group discussions of what it takes to be a great Pennsauken athlete and how it will help them grow as an individual. On Monday morning, Phifer students were buzzing with stories of excitement for the upcoming season and high school career. 6 Pennsauken High School News JA High School Heroes Twenty-two Pennsauken High School National Honor Society students took part in Junior Achievement's High School Heroes service learning project. The students volunteered their time to learn the curriculum and prepare for the day. High school students served as role models by teaching and mentoring 136 K-4th grade Roosevelt Elementary students. They used hands-on, interactive lessons centered around work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. This experience was not only fun, but helped our high school students learn soft skills needed to get a job! The 25 Pennsauken students were treated to various speakers, engineering challenges, games and prizes. Christy Tighe from Junior Achievement ran the event and said I visited Pennsauken during their Summer Enrichment program. I was so impressed that I wanted them to be part of our first ever joint venture between JA and Lockheed Martin. And I am very happy to have them attend. Page 6

7 Pennsauken High School News IVY LEAGUE ENGINEERING VISIT Nik Alvelo, Pennsauken Class of 2015, visited the Science of Engineering class on Monday March 5. Nik is in his third year at the University of Pennsylvania and is a Computer Science Major. Nik shared his experiences of transitioning from PHS to UPenn. He gave great advice and the students were completely engaged. Nik is the president of Access Engineering for UPenn. He is in the process of expanding the program to include Pennsauken students next fall. This is an exciting partnership for Pennsauken s engineering academy. Teachers as Learners Great Minds in STEM - Teacher Training On Thursday March 8th, Math and Science teachers were invited for a special STEM based professional development. Lockheed Martin partnered with Viva Technology to train teachers about the limitless possibilities of Science Technology Engineering and Math. After a brief refreshment period, teachers were introduced to the field through a hands-on trebuchet design challenge. In small groups, faculty collaborated to design a catapult capable of tossing a weighted sac. After building a working model, the groups tested their prototypes. Intrigued by the challenge, the experimenters enjoyed problem solving and rebuilding their creations to increase efficiency. During the training, teachers also learned about STEM based careers and colleges offering quality preparation programs. Empowered, educators left the training equipped to share the wonders of STEM with their students. Page 7

8 Pennsauken High School News Great Minds in STEM - Student Emphasis Pennsauken High School was chosen as 1 of 7 schools in the nation to participate in a nationally acclaimed STEM education event. On March 9th, engineers from California, Texas, Virginia and New Jersey convened at Pennsauken High School to facilitate the Great Minds in STEM event. A product of Lockheed Martin and Viva Technology, the 3 tiered event was geared to expose teachers, parents, and students to the transformational potential of STEM. Using a powerful combination of theory presentation, active discussion, and hands on learning, almost 20 volunteers engaged 100 students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math based learning. Breaking away from traditional methods of learning to problem solve and think critically, students participated in activities based on engineering design, coding, and innovative creations. The competitive day ended on a high note with scores of high quality prizes being awarded to upper level math and science students. From drones to headphones, speakers, printers, and tablets, Lockheed gifted our students with the technology of the future. Students left the experience with more than an appreciation of STEM; they left with the keys to the future. Page 8
