5 Science 4-Health 5 Food Groups My Plate is a guide to eating healthy. It shows us the foods that we need to eat to keep our bodies healthy and strong. When we eat from each of the food groups on My Plate, we are making healthy choices that will help our bodies to work at its best. Our bodies are like cars, and what does a car need to run? Gas or fuel. Food is the fuel our bodies need to run. If we don t give our bodies the right type of fuel, our bodies may not run as well. Healthy foods are the healthiest fuel we can give our bodies, and MyPlate helps us to choose those types of food. The foods are broken up into food groups based on how they help our bodies. Unscramble the words below to discover the 5 food groups found on MyPlate: Color your MyPlate to make it colorful using the colors given: Fruits-Red, Vegetables-Green, Grains-Orange, Protein-Purple & Dairy-Blue RFUTI VGETEALBE RNGAIS PRTENI AIRDY Eating healthy is not just about the amount of food you eat. You need to make sure you're eating the types of food that charge you up. Strive to eat meals & snacks that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat protein, and dairy. Fruits and Vegetables Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables. Dark green, red, and orange vegetables, in particular, have high levels of the nutrients you need, such as vitamin C, calcium, and fiber. Adding spinach or romaine lettuce and tomato to your sandwich is an easy way to get more veggies in your meal. Grains Choose whole grains, like whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and oatmeal. Protein Power up with lean meats, like turkey on a sandwich, or chicken, seafood, eggs, beans, nuts, tofu, and other protein-rich foods. Dairy Build strong bones with fat-free or low-fat milk products. If you cannot digest lactose (the sugar in milk that causes some people stomach pain), choose soy or rice milk and low-fat yogurt. 6 Science 4-Health MICRO-WHATTTT? WHAT ARE MICROBES? A microbe is anything too small to be visible to the naked eye. Two types of microbes are bacteria and viruses. You re surrounded by microbes all the time, and normally co-exist peacefully. Some types help you, like the bacteria in your digestive tract that help break down food. There are, however, some types of bacterium and viruses that can make you ill. Bacteria are single-celled organisms. There are thousands of types of bacteria, and they live virtually anywhere. Bacteria are much bigger than viruses. (But they re all way too small for you to see.) Bacteria are much more complex than viruses. Bacteria have the tools to reproduce themselves, by themselves. They are filled with fluid, and may have threadlike structures to move themselves, like a tail. Virus. A virus may have a spiny outside layer, called the envelope. Viruses cannot reproduce on their own. They infect cells and take over their reproductive machinery to reproduce. Want to learn more about diseases? Scan the QR code to visit the BAM website to play games & learn more! IMMUNE SYSTEM WORD FIND The immune system protects the body from infections and diseases. It's sometimes also called the Lymphatic system. It's made up of the tissues and organs that produce, store, and carry white blood cells that fight infections and other diseases. This system includes the bone marrow, spleen, tonsils, thymus, lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels. Use the word bank to find the hidden words in the puzzle.
