SPRING TERM WEEK TH MARCH Y3 VISIT ROMAN CAERLEON The Y3 trip to Caerleon was a resounding success, with a day packed full of different activities to support our theoretical understanding of the Roman invasion and settlement in Britain over 2,000 years ago. Our first stop was the Roman Baths where pupils saw the remains of the various pools, underfloor heating system (hypocaust) and mosaic tiles. An exciting, engaging and informative session at the amphitheatre - which incidentally is regarded to be the best example in Britain - followed this, leading onto the Soldiers' Barracks where the ancient communal toilet was a source of great fascination... do ask a Y3 pupil why indeed this was! After lunch, a fascinating session in the Museum was enjoyed, culminating in the fully interactive and immersive experience of the Capricorn centre, whereby pupils explored a replica Roman soldiers' barrack room and tried on Roman armour, before an educational role-play session in a Roman House. Here with the divide between the affluent Roman citizens and their slaves was clearly modelled, sparking lots of discussion and provoking our pupils' thoughts with regard to the development and recognition of human rights in this country. Although I was made the 'Head Slave' and would therefore have received a small amount of money for services rendered to my master, I didn't appreciate my duty at his dinner party: having to hold the pot under his guests' mouths so that they could vomit in between eating courses of honeyed dormice, peacocks' brains, and oysters whilst drinking copious amounts of wine! Mrs Fitzpatrick I really liked the amphitheatre because it was ancient and I was impressed by how well it had been built as it has lasted for so long! The reason the Romans used sand as the floor in their amphitheatres was because it would soak up all the blood and could be removed just like a giant cat-litter tray! Henry The Baths were dark and spooky at first but then we noticed a lot of information and special features were spotlighted so they really stood out. For example, the hypocaust and the different pools like the fridgidarium (cold plunge-pool). Brr! Florence Lots of things on display in the museum had been found trapped in the drain from the Baths such as jewellery, baby teeth and coins. Toby and Winston

Y6 VISIT BUDDHIST CENTRE Y6 as part of their topic on Buddhism visited the Amitabha Centre in Bristol. A resident monk and nun talked to the children about the Buddhist faith and showed them the meditation rooms. There was a 6ft Buddha which had been filled with 10,000 scrolls and painted to look bronze. The nun talked about offerings to the Buddha, living as a nun, dharma protectors and we tried out meditation. The monk spoke about different states of mind, his life as a monk and he answered lots of questions from the children. CHRIS BRADFORD Author Visit On Tuesday a famous author called Chris Bradford came to talk to us. Bodyguard and The Young Samurai are two of his best books. He has Target (one of the Bodyguard series) coming out in May. Chris has been a bodyguard himself! He has his own Samurai sword as he had trained to be one in order to give his books more detail. Chris chose me to come out to the front to be a bodyguard. He made me wear black sunglasses I looked hilarious. As I was a bodyguard I had to follow him wherever he went. To follow someone like this is harder than it looks, but it was really fun. Alf was chosen to be a demonstrator and he was given a protector before he demonstrated a bodyguard move on him. Chris is a brilliantly fun speaker and an exciting author. By Vibhuti Just wanted to say how lovely it was to meet you all today. The children were great and full of interesting and insightful questions. Please let them know that they are a credit to themselves and the school. Look forward to you visiting again! Very best wishes Rak-ma and all at Amitabha Centre

SUPERHEROES WORKSHOP ARTISTS OF THE WEEK Congratulations to Martha, Alex W, Alex G, Clara, Sophie, Georgina and Eva who are our Artists of the Week. On Tuesday, all of the children from Pre-prep were transformed in to Superheroes! They loved the workshop and were all very engaged. It was fun because we got to play games and the lady was very funny Kit I liked the spaceship part because we got to pretend we were flying in to space Imogen I liked the Superhero lady because she changed in to two different superheroes Sebastian The lady was brilliant at doing the actions Emilie COMPUTER CLUB KS1

Hockey Sports Reports U11A v BGS The U11A hockey team are a match for anyone on their day when they play like a team but, unfortunately, there were too many individuals on the pitch against BGS. Colston s looked threatening going forward with plenty of people in support, but when the ball was lost the determination to get back and defend was certainly lacking. Philip made some pleasing saves in goal, but was unable to stop BGS from deflecting the ball in when players were not picked up due to ballwatching. I am sure that Colston s will pick themselves up for the final game of the season against Elmlea; they need to show that they are capable of playing together as a unit as they have already done this term. U11B v BGS The U11B hockey team performed well in an end-to-end game against tough opposition in BGS. Archie volunteered to go in goal for the first time and made some good saves in both halves ensuring the score was 0-0 at half time. The game opened up much more in the second half and there were chances at both ends but BGS were the only team that managed to get the ball in the back of the goal. Kai worked well in the middle of the pitch and, with a little more composure in front of goal, the result could have been different. Overall, the season has produced some good results but I would like to see a little more thought going into passing, rather than just hit-and-hope. Hockey Sports Reports U11D v BGS Colston s arrived at Failand hoping to continue their winning ways after victory against Kingswood last week. They started the brighter of the two sides: Dominic with a run down the right and a shot which went just wide as the goalkeeper lay stranded. That was to be as good as it got for the visitors. Colston s followed Dominic s effort with a 10 minute spell of maladroit hockey at the end of which they were 0-4 down. The first came from a penalty corner which was clumsily given away. After a goal mouth scramble worthy of the Keystone Cops the ball was eventually hit towards its intended target leaving goalkeeper Charlie with little chance. The second was a breakaway as we lost the ball on the halfway line. Both defenders were sleeping and Charlie stood little chance against a well-struck shot. Next, another penalty corner, this time a slick routine moved the ball into space and found the backboard. Another breakaway goal ended the spell as possession was given away on the halfway line. The second half saw a wholesale change of personnel and pace as Colston s pressed BGS deep into their own half. Man of the Match Dominic finished off a wonderfully worked move down the left hand side as several players combined to move the ball to and fro and finally across the line for Colston s first and only goal of the match. Colston s kept pressing but they left themselves vulnerable at the back and BGS s one attack of the second half saw them re-establish their four-goal lead and maintain their impressively good ratio of goals to chances. Once again Charlie did as well as he could but, as with all five goals, he was left with too much to do by the rest of the team.

Hockey Sports Reports U10A Hockey v BGS The U10A hockey team started their final match against BGS a little too slowly. As a result, we struggled to gain any momentum and found ourselves under siege. At half time we were three nil down. In the second half we competed much better, creating scoring opportunities, only to be denied by their strong goalkeeper. As we tired we conceded a couple of late goals; unfortunately, you never know what would have happened had we started with more confidence. This team has played well throughout the season; the main areas to work on are awareness and vision, coupled with precise passing. There is lots of potential here. U11/10C & D Hockey v The Paragon The U11/10 C and D squads enjoyed a successful afternoon against the Paragon last Wednesday. It was heartening to see how much the boys had developed their skills throughout the term. I was especially impressed with Michael s tenacity in defence, Joshua s quick, intelligent passing and Callum s dribbling. Charlie played brilliantly in his first time as goalkeeper. Well done to everyone involved in these fixtures. House Singing Competition Following the Singing Competition in school next Tuesday, we intend to put on a performance of the songs for parents on Friday 18 March at 3.30pm. Similarly to last year we will do this in the playground in front of the Juniors Building. Do join us if you can. Netball Sports Reports What a fantastic week for our U11A team! Winners of Monkton s U11A tournament and making it through to the playoff stage at the U11A IAPS tournament at Millfield, where 27 teams took part. U11A Tournament at Monkton: Winners!! The results for our first three pool games were: 9-0 against Stonar and 8-2 against St Margarets. We then went on to play Paragon in the next stage, which we won 8-5. The final was against Kingswood and we won that 8-4. The girls played some fantastic netball and dominated the tournament from start to finish. They were deserved winners and should be so proud of how they performed. The U11A IAPS Tournament was a very big affair with three pools of 9 taking part. In our pool we secured victories against: Hazlegrove, The Downs, Prior Park, Kings Hall, Beaudesert, and Hereford Cathedral. We also managed to draw with RGS The Grange; the eventual winners of our pool. Our final pool game was against Millfield, which we narrowly lost. This great performance meant that we qualified for the play off stage of the tournament. In this round we were up against our nemesis Redmaid s. Having beaten them last week we were feeling confident but on this occasion it wasn t meant to be and we narrowly lost out 4-2. The girls can take great pride in the fact that we have beaten a side who have now qualified for the National finals, so we know we are one of the best U11A netball teams in the country this year! Our U11A s are great role models for the younger girls as their sportsmanship matches their sporting ability.

NETBALL SPORTS RESULTS U10 v St John s-on-the-hill Lost 11-6 The girls played six 6 minute sessions in this game to allow St Johns to rotate all of their players. After the fourth session of play the score was tied at 6-6. It was the last two sessions where St John s managed to just edge ahead. Our seven Y5s played well together, with standout performances on the day from Raheela in defence and Isabelle as our Centre. U9 v Redland High The U9 teams had a great afternoon of netball on Friday against Redland High. Managing 3 wins and one draw. U9A, won 24 0 U9B, drew 5 5 U9C, won 6 0 U9D, won 9 0 DIARY DATES Y6 DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY DAY Monday 14 th March Y1, Y2, 4G & 6H PARENTS EVENING Monday 14 th March (Y1 also on 16 th March) PARENTS SOCIETY CURRY AND QUIZ NIGHT Friday 18 th March Y3 INFORMAL SPRING CONCERT Tuesday 22 nd March 4.15pm 5.00 EASTER SERVICE Wednesday 23 rd March 8.45am NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS Choir on Monday Due to parent s evening, Chamber Choir will run from 4pm 4.40pm on Monday 14 th March.
