EARLY RUNS, GREAT PITCHING: Portland scored three in the first off losing pitcher LHP Joely Rodriguez (3-5) and LHP Brian Johnson tossed six strong innings, as the Dogs beat the Curve 5-1 Johnson notched his fifth quality start of the season, working six innings on four hits, one run and six strikeouts CF Derrik Gibson finished with three hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt Portland received an RBI from five different players and seven of nine starters reached base safely DH David Chester went 3- for- 4 with a run- scoring single in his Double- A debut. JOHNSON S JUST ROLLING: Johnson improved to 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in seven Double- A starts The lefty has worked at least five innings in every start and has allowed just 13 runs (nine earned) on 29 hits in 41.1 innings In total he has thrown 422 of 653 pitches for strikes (65%). MORE ON THE NEW CF: Gibson has made his first 6 professional starts in CF over the last six games In his last eight starts, the Delaware native is hitting.517 (15- for- 29) with 7 RBI, double and 4 walks For the season, Gibson has reached base safely in 35 of 42 games. THROWING UP ZEREOS: LHP Henry Owens has won three straight appearances, but has not allowed a run in his last 22.1 innings pitched, which is tied with LHP Drake Britton (May 30- June 16, 2013) and LHP Phil Seibel (May 20- June 11, 2006) for the second longest streak in team history LHP Kris Johnson holds the franchise mark, tossing 24 scoreless frames from June 15- July 1, WELCOME TO THE PARTY: Chester was activated from High- A Salem s disabled list before yesterday s game (OF Jesus Loya to DL) and went 3- for- 4, RBI and a double in his Double- A debut The former standout at the University of Pittsburgh hit.220 with 3 homers and 15 RBI with Salem He was on the DL from April 28- June 9. TWO OUT MAGIC: The Sea Dogs have scored 152 out of 357 runs with two outs (43%), and as a team they are hitting.287 (81-282) with RISP and two- out Portland s pitchers are holding the opponent to.228 (62- for- 272) with RISP and 2- outs.
