Eclipsing the 30-win mark for the second-consecutive season and the eighth time under head coach Dean Ehehalt, the Hawks enter postseason play with a overall record, while earning their fourth 20-win league total in program history, fi nishing MU, which fi nished second behind regular season champion Bryant, which cannot qualify for postseason play as it serves its fi nal season of the NCAA-mandated fouryear reclassifi cation period, will battle fourth-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson in the fi rst round, while No. 2 Sacred Heart takes on No. 3 Central Connecticut State. The Hawks went 6-6 against the 2012 tournament fi eld this season, taking threeof-four with the Knights in the conference s opening weekend in March. MU and CCSU split its series in New Britain, while the Pioneers were the fi rst team to defeat the Hawks in a four-game set since the 2010 season. The Blue and White will hope history repeats itself as the last time it dropped a NEC series prior to postseason play, it took home the program s fourth tournament title. The Hawks, who are the top seed for the fi fth time since 1998, have won their last three championships in the Nutmeg State (1999, 2007, 2009).

The three-time Northeast Conference Coach of the Year spent two seasons at Upsala College before taking over in West Long Branch. Ehehalt has led the Hawks to the NEC Tournament 15 times in his tenure and has captured four league crowns. With a 7-2 victory over Lafayette this season, the Hawks head man earned his 500th career win in a MU uniform. GOOD THING NO ONE IS HOME The Hawks enjoyed an 18-6 record at home but struggled away from the friendly confi nes of the MU Baseball Field. Monmouth fi nished with a record away from West Long Branch, but stands a perfect 3-0 in neutral site contests. The Blue and White defeated Wright State, Saint Joseph s, and Youngstown State the fi rst weekend of the season to start 3-0 for the fi rst time since the 1994 season, the fi rst year Dean Ehehalt took over the program. OFFENSIVE OUTBURST The Hawks scored at least 10 runs in two of their fi rst three games this season. It took the Blue and White until March 25th last year to light up the scoreboard with a double-digit total, putting up 17 runs against Northeast Conference foe Bryant. MU scored 10 runs in the season opener for the fi rst time since opening day of the 1992 campaign. MORE RADAR GUNS THAN THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY Drawing interest from professional scouts throughout the season, junior Pat Light enjoyed his best season in West Long Branch. Prior to the year, Baseball America tabbed Light as the 25th-ranked collegiate prospect heading into this upcoming season and the local product proved his value. The hurler has compiled a 7-3 record in 13 starts for MU. In 92.1 innings of work, the junior has an ERA of 2.63, striking out a Northeast Conference-best and new MU single-season record 97 batters while yielding just 14 walks. Light, who was named NEC Pitcher of the Week three times this season, has excelled especially in league play. With a 5-1 record and 1.62 ERA, the righty has registered 78 punch-outs compared to surrendering just seven free passes while holding opponents to a mere.209 batting average. Light, who took a perfect game into the eighth inning against Wagner (3/23), has recorded double-digit strikeout totals against Fairleigh Dickinson (13), Wagner (11), Quinnipiac (10), LIU Brooklyn (15) and Sacred Heart (10). The two-time NJCBA Pitcher of the Week gained national attention after fanning 15 LIU batters and not allowing a walk to set a new career-best and tie a MU single-game strikeout record. Light, who was added to USA Baseball s Golden Spike Award Watch List, was named Collegiate Baseball s/louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his efforts. SOPHOMORE DUO When Danny Avella went down with an injury last season and NEC Player of the Year Ryan Terry moved over to third, a pair of then freshmen in Jon Guida and Jake Gronsky manned the middle infi eld for the Hawks. Now as sophomores, the classmates are again clogging up the infi eld again for the Blue and White, starting 53 and 55 games, respectively, this season. Gronsky and Guida, who have a combined to commit just 19 errors in over 500 chances, combined for 25 of the Hawks 40 double plays this year. WAY TO KEEP IT UP Andrew McGee, who was named to the 2011 Collegiate Baseball s/louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, shifted into a starting role this season for Ehehalt s squad. McGee, a First Team All-Northeast Conference selection last season as a relief pitcher, made 10 starts this season, compiling a 7-3 record with fi ve complete games and two shutouts. The Toms River South product strung together fi ve-straight wins working three complete games in the process. The southpaw has gone the distance in four of his last six games.
3 ALL-TIME LEAGUE HONORS Monmouth has had fi ve Northeast Conference Players of the Year in its history while four pitchers earned NEC Pitcher of the Year. Eight Hawks have claimed NEC Rookie of the Year honors, including assistant coach Jeff Barbalinardo in 1991, while Dean Ehehalt has collected three Coach of the year Accolades during his tenure in West Long Branch. In addition to the major conference awards, MU has put 29 players on the NEC First Team while the Hawks were represented 24 times on the conference s second team. FEELS LIKE THE FIRST 200TH TIME Jamie Rosenkranz connected on his 200th career hit, a home run, in the Hawks victory over Central Connecticut State last month. The senior, who was added to Capitol One Academic District II First Team, is a lifetime.316 (218-for-689) hitter, with 66 of his 218 hits going for extra bases (43 doubles, 6 triples and 17 home runs). The infi elder turned outfi elder, a two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Week recipient this year, has scored 132 times while driving in 110 runs in his four-year career. AGAINST THE FIELD Monmouth is a combined in the Northeast Conference Tournament against the 2012 fi eld. The Hawks hold a 7-5 record against the Blue Devils, while compiling a 2-1 record versus the Knights with their last victory against FDU coming in the 1999 championship game, the Hawks second-straight title. Sacred Heart holds a slight edge over MU winning four of the seven games. YOU WANT ME ON THAT WALL, YOU NEED ME ON THAT WALL The Hawks senior outfi eld corps of Ed Martin, Josh Boyd, and Jamie Rosenkranz has recorded a total of 15 outfi eld assists. Martin contributed a team-high with seven, including three against Rutgers, while Boyd and Rosenkranz chipped in with four each. Rookie Steve Wilgus added the Hawks fi nal outfi eld assists last weekend in MU s extra inning win over Sacred Heart, preserving a 2-2 tie with his helper from left fi eld. I LL TAKE THREE, PLEASE Josh Boyd moved into second all-time in the Hawks record books with his 11th career triple. Entering the season with eight, the speedy outfi elder connected on three triples this season against Virginia (2/24), Temple (3/30) and LIU Brooklyn (4/28). The New Jersey native, who is 11-for-12 in stolen base attempts, is two off Nick Massari s ( ) mark of 13 career three-baggers. CLOSER BY COMMITTEE The Hawks bullpen has been a true team effort having four guys combining on the team s 13 saves. Working in 21 games out of the pen, Neil Harm has four saves in 26.2 innings of action, Joe Loiodice and Adam Yunginger each have three while Charlie Battis has entered 12 games and collected a pair of saves. Despite not working towards a save, Stephen Frey has hurled quality innings in relief the last three weekends, allowing fi ve earned runs on 10 hits with 11 strikeouts in 11.1 innings. WINNING WAYS MU enjoyed two winning streaks that lasted over fi ve games this season. The Blue and White won the fi nal two games at Troy to take the series from the Sun Belt favorites, earned a win over Georgia State before returning home for the fi rst time all year to take three from Fairleigh Dickinson to run its fi rst winning streak to six. The Hawks outdid themselves later in the year, taking seven in a row starting with Coach Ehehalt s 500th career MU victory against Lafayette. After taking four-straight from Quinnipiac, and holding on for 3-2 win over Temple, MU capped of its seven-game winning streak with a wild game over Rider. After eight scoreless innings, the Broncs put fi ve runs on the board in the top of the ninth. The Hawks answered in the home half of the frame and strung together seven hits to score six runs to walk off with the victory. RECORD WHEN...
