Bringing the Hawks to back-to-back NEC Championship games in 2009 and 2010, Figlio, last season s NEC Coach of the Year, is as head coach of the Blue and White with a 2-2 postseason mark. OUT OF LEAGUE SUCCESS For the second time in program history, the Hawks fi nished their nonconference slate with a winning record, posting an 8-4 mark against out of league opponents. The Blue and White defeated Miami (OH) in overtime for its fi rst win of the season before rattling off a fi ve-game winning streak over Lehigh, Columbia, Vermont, Rutgers, and Delaware. MU, which fi nished the regular season a program-best 14-4 a year ago, wrapped up non-conference action with a 8-3 record last year. HAWKS VS. THE TOP-20 Monmouth had two opponents on its schedule that were listed in top-20 in the Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Coaches Poll. The Hawks opened the 2011 campaign at No. 5 Syracuse, falling to the Orange 4-0 despite 17 saves from Teresa Mathews in her fi rst collegiate start in cage. Later in the season, the Blue and White fell to No. 16 Albany 2-1 on neutral ground, despite scoring the fi rst goal of the game 33 seconds into regulation. The one-goal defi cit for MU is the lowest scoring margin against a nationally-ranked opponent in the program s 15-year history. ALL-NEC Monmouth has had 47 athletes all-time earn Northeast Conference honors in its history. Five current Hawks have earned the accolade from the league, led by graduate Morganne Firmstone who was tabbed to the second team in 2007 and the fi rst team in Michelle Pieczynski has also earned two all-conference honors, being placed on the second squad in her rookie campaign in 2009, while being placed on the fi rst team last season. Senior Ashley McPeek (2009 second team) and juniors Kimmy Baligian and Nicole Manziano (2010 second team) also have been labeled All-NEC. LEADING THE PACK Michelle Pieczynski became MU s all-time leading scorer and point leader this season after posting a career high in goals (19) and assists (6) in The junior, who entered the season with 22 career tallies, now has 41 markers, passing Gina Chico ( ) and Kellie Nurko s ( ) total of 36. Adding 12 career helpers, the Pennsylvania native has 94 points through her fi rst three years in the Blue and White, passing Chico s record of 83 (36 g, 11 a) that has stood atop of the leaderboard the past nine years. WHEN YOU NEED ME, I LL BE THERE Nicole Manziano entered the season without a defensive save to her credit but the junior defender exploded in 2011 with 11 saves. The defender, who leads the country in the category, registered six saves over a three-game span in September to earn Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Manziano is one of four players in the country who registered three saves in a contest as she turned away a trio of shots, including one as time expired in regulation, in the overtime victory at Delaware. The New Jersey native posted a defensive save in six-straight games (9/18-10/7) totaling nine saves during that span.
3 NEW HAWK IN CAGE With the graduation of All-NEC goalkeeper Melissa Katz, sophomore Teresa Mathews has stepped into the starting role for MU, getting the call in all 19 games for the Hawks this season. The sophomore made her colligate debut opening day against No. 5 Syracuse, turning away 17 shots in a losing effort. Mathews got her fi rst win, an overtime victory, over visiting Miami (OH) and recorded her fi rst of three shutouts on the season in a home win over Columbia. The New Jersey native has logged over 1348 minutes in cage, turning away 90 shots for a.726 save percentage. She has allowed 34 markers for a 1.76 GAA. NEC WEEKLY HONORS MORE LIKE A MONTH Monmouth earned a month of honors as three different players earned Northeast Conference accolades in four-straight weeks. Nicole Manziano kicked-off the Hawks streak after registering six defensive saves during the week of September The junior posted six saves from the back line over a three game span to earn her fi rst career weekly award. The following week (9/26-10/3), Michelle Pieczynski earned the fi rst of her two consecutive honors as she recorded fi ve points in the Hawks win over Georgetown. Pieczynski retained the award at the opening of NEC play (10/4-10/10), as she posted 11 points (4 g, 3 a) in the two victories over Bryant and Siena. Sophomore Patricia O Dywer completed the month of honors with her fi rst career conference accolade (10/4-17). The Ireland native played a part in three of the four goals, scoring three times during MU s victories over Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart. O Dwyer added her second honor the fi nal week of the season after compiling her fi rst-career hat trick while adding a helper in a seven-point effort in the road win at Robert Morris. DOUBLE A BATTERY - JUST KEEPS GOING Defender Ali Askinas earned the starting nod in every game her fi rst two seasons in the Blue and White. The sophomore registered two defensive saves this season to increase her career total to three. ROAD WARRIORS MU fi nished 6-1 away from the friendly confi nes of So Sweet A Cat Field, with its lone setback coming on opening day at No. 5 Syracuse. The Blue and White earned victories at Rutgers, Delaware (in overtime), Temple (scoring the gamewinner with three seconds left in regulation), Bryant, Siena and Robert Morris. LAST MINUTE MONMOUTH The Blue and White registered some key plays in the fi nal minute to pull away with victories. In the win at Delaware, Nicole Manziano denied the Blue Hens the go-ahead goal twice, once without any time left in regulation. The Hawks went on to win the game in overtime on Michelle Pieczynski s goal in the extra session. Two games later at Temple, with the game knotted at 1-1, sophomore Patricia O Dwyer scored the difference maker with three ticks left in regulation to give MU the road victory SUCCESS The Hawks had a record-breaking year in 2010, fi nishing with a program-best 15-5 record while recording their best record against non-conference opponents (8-3). In addition, the squad fi nished above.500 in conference for the fi rst time since BACK-TO-BACK For the fi rst time in the program s 15 year history, the Hawks fi nished with over 10 victories in two consecutive seasons. MU, which has fi nished with at least 10 victories in three seasons (2000, 2010, 2011), also recorded an above.500 conference record for the fi fth time (1999, 2000, 2001, 2010, 2011) in its history. ONE MORE GO-AROUND Graduate Morganne Firmstone and senior Melissa Murphy are back in the Blue and White for their respective fi fth-years. Firmstone, who started all but one game her freshman season, sat out 2008 after playing in fi ve contests. The last three years, the Honesdale, Pennsylvania native has started all but three games scoring 11 goals, fi ve of which were game-winners, and dishing out 13 helpers to increase her career assist total to 16. Last year, she was named Northeast Conference Fall-Scholar Athlete along with being tabbed to the Capitol One Academic All-District team. Murphy, a local product from nearby Shore Regional High School, played in 12 games, starting four, in 2007 before sitting out the 2008 season. Missing two starts the last three seasons, the defender has 10 career points, scoring two goals in 2010 and assisting on fi ve goals the last two years. Controlling the back line, Murphy also has a career-high three defensive saves this year to improve her career total to four. STICK IT TO CANCER For the second consecutive season, Monmouth and in-state rival Rutgers teamed up to Stick It To Cancer when they met in Piscataway in September. Morganne Firmstone tallied the game-winner early in the second half to give the Hawks a 2-1 win. The two teams raised over $1,500 for cancer research to bring its two-year total to $3,000.
