DALLAS BAPTIST SERIES Baylor leads the all-time series vs. Dallas Baptist 46-24, in Waco, 10-7 in Dallas and under Steve Smith. The Bears had won six straight games in the series before DBU took the series opener April 11, 2014, to win a split series with two games in Waco 2-1 last season, and then the Patriots won a 9-6 decision this season in Waco on Feb. 17. BAYLOR VS. MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE Baylor is all-time against current members of the Missouri Valley Conference. RANKED TEAMS Baylor is against ranked teams since 2011 and 3-2 this season after sweeping No. 13 Cal Poly to open the season and falling to No. 2 LSU and No. 22 Texas A&M over the weekend in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The Bears are all-time on the road against Baseball America ranked teams, overall since 1981, and 0-2 this season (LSU, Texas A&M). BAYLOR AT THE HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC Baylor is made its ninth appearance in the Houston College Classic put on by the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park over the weekend. The Bears went 0-3 with losses to Hawaii (2-1), No. 2 LSU (2-0) and No. 22 Texas A&M (3-2) and are now all-time in the tournament, including a 3-0 record in their 2005 College World Series season. In BU s last appearance in 2013, it opened with a 9-0 win over California on March 1, After falling 15-4 in seven innings to Houston on March 2, 2013, the Bears rebounded for a big, 9-2 win over No. 13 Rice on March 3, DANIEL CASTANO NAMED TO HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM left-handed starter Daniel Castano was named to the Houston College Classic all-tournament team after tying a career high and setting a season high with eight innings pitched against No. 2 LSU as he allowed one run on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in a loss. DODSON & ARRINGTON EARN BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORS Baylor s Aaron Dodson and Justin Arrington were named Big 12 Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, the league announced March 2. The last time Baylor had two players earn a weekly honor from the league in the same week was March 4, 2013, when Max Garner won the pitching honor and Cal Towey garnered the hitting honor. The duo joins Sean Spicer (Feb. 16, Big 12 Pitcher of the Week) on the list of players to collect a weekly league accolade this season. Dodson s player of the week award is the first for Baylor since Adam Toth was chosen on May 5, 2014, and Arrington s newcomer of the week award is the first for the Bears since Daniel Castano was selected on April 21, Dodson hit.500 (8-for-16) in four games with five runs, three doubles, one triple, one RBI, 13 total bases, an.813 slugging percentage and a.500 on-base percentage two weeks ago for the Bears. In a win over Northwestern State, the sophomore first baseman/catcher went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double. In game two at Cal State Fullerton, he went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, one triple and one RBI in the second game of a doubleheader. In game three at Cal State Fullerton, he went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Arrington hit.417 (5-for-12) in four games with one run, one double, four RBI, six total bases, a.500 slugging percentage, one walk, a.462 on-base percentage and one steal. In a win over Northwestern State, the junior transfer went 1-for-4 with a run, RBI and steal. In the first game of a doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton, he went 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk and double. In the second game, he went 1-for-3. In game three, the Plano, Texas, native went 1-for-3 with two RBI to extend his on-base streak to seven games and hitting streak to five. Overall, the Bears have had 40 player of the week selections and seven newcomer of the week choices in the Big 12. FRESH FACES SETTING THE PACE Partially due to injuries, Baylor s underclassmen have 65 percent of the team s at-bats and 62 percent of the team s innings pitched. The Bears team leaders in homers (Aaron Dodson and Kameron Esthay, 1), slugging percentage (Dodson,.538), doubles (Darryn Sheppard, 5), ERA (Theron Kay, 1.46), wins (Theron Kay, 2) and innings pitched (Drew Tolson, 22.0) are all underclassmen. POLLSTERS PAYING ATTENTION Baylor was ranked for two straight weeks by a pair of polls before dropping out of all polls this week. After being ranked No. 21 and No. 27 in the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA polls Feb. 16, respectively, BU is No. 25 and 28 in the same polls Feb. 23. Last week, BU was receiving votes in the NCBWA poll but the Bears are unranked this week. The Bears did not receive any votes in any of the preseason polls and were picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 by the league s coaches. BU has been ranked by at least one poll for five straight seasons. SUCCESS THROUGH SEVEN Baylor has had at least five wins in its first seven games for two straight seasons (5-2 in 2014 and 2015) and for the third time in four seasons (6-1 in 2012). Each of the three seasons have featured two things in common. In all three seasons, BU has beaten a ranked opponent (No. 15 TCU and No. 22 UCLA in 2012, No. 19 Arizona State in 2014 and No. 13 Cal Poly in 2015) and has also had at least four wins at Baylor Ballpark. 1-2-SWEEP Baylor s doubleheader sweep of Kent State Feb. 21 marked the first time BU swept a doubleheader since March 11, 2012, vs. Memphis. BU leads the all-time series vs. Kent State 3-1 as the only other meeting between the two teams came at the 1993 NCAA South Regional hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The Bears won 4-1 on May 27, BAYLOR BALLPARK S HOME SWEET HOME ADVANTAGE Since the park opened in 1999, Baylor owns a record at Baylor Ballpark and has never had a losing season in the stadium. The closest BU came to a losing season was in 2011, when the Bears were at Baylor Ballpark. Since 2012, BU has won 14 of its 19 home series. The Bears are 6-2 at home this year and have won both series thus far (3-0 vs. No.13 Cal Poly 2-1 vs. Kent State).

The honor is Spicer s first weekly award of his career as he was key in the Bears earning a sweep over No. 13 Cal Poly. The senior right-handed reliever from Dallas posted a 0.00 ERA and his first two career saves in as many attempts to help Baylor sweep the Mustangs during opening weekend at Baylor Ballpark. Spicer s line for the series: two saves, three innings pitched, zero hits, runs and walks allowed and one strikeout. He tossed a perfect ninth on Friday for his first-ever save and followed it up with a two-inning flawless save Saturday. Sharing the accolade with Oklahoma s Jake Elliott, Spicer is the first Baylor pitcher to earn the honor since Austin Stone on March 24, With Spicer s recognition, Baylor has now had a weekly award winner in all 19 seasons as a member of the Big 12. The Bears have had 33 all-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Week selections. PARALLELS TO THE GREAT 2012 SEASON Baylor s clean sweep of No. 13 Cal Poly to open the season marked a few achievements that hadn t been accomplished since the great 2012 campaign. BU earned its first season-opening series win and sweep since 2012 vs. Oral Roberts. BU also earned its first home series sweep over a ranked team since April 20-22, 2012, vs. No. 2 Texas A&M. BAYLOR AND CAL POLY MEET FOR FIRST TIME The two programs had never met before opening weekend but have combined for over 2,800 all-time wins. The Bears got the best of the Mustangs in the first-ever meeting with a 3-0 series victory at Baylor Ballpark. BAYLOR SUCCEEDING IN HOME OPENERS UNDER SMITH Baylor is 16-5 in home openers under Steve Smith and has won nine of its last 10. The lone loss in the stretch came to Oral Roberts on Feb. 18, 2011, but the Bears bounced back to win the next two games and take the series. Last season, the Bears defeated UT Arlington on Feb. 18, 2014, 5-2. BU swept its home-opening series for the second straight season. STRONG SCHEDULE BU s 52-game schedule features 29 home games, and among the 23 teams the Bears face, 13 made the 2014 NCAA Tournament, eight won their conference regular season or tournament title, five reached an NCAA Super Regional, three reached the College World Series, only three teams were under.500 last season, and the cumulative record for the 23 teams in 2014 was (.607). REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD On April 25th vs. Kansas State, Baylor will host an alumni reunion and celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2005 College World Series team. Baylor s third and last team to make the College World Series broke a 28-year drought in 2005 by becoming the second team (Kansas in 1993) ever to reach the CWS one year after a losing season. The 2005 squad never lost more than two straight games, shared the Big 12 regular season title with Nebraska and earned the nation s fourth overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears hosted and won their regional and super regional events to advance to the CWS, where they fell short but did pick up the program s first-ever CWS win by topping Oregon State in 10 innings.
