MOOSIC, PA (June 21, 2018) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Thursday night in the rubber match at PNC Field. With the victory, the RailRiders have taken a 7-5 lead in the 2018 IronRail Series. The IronPigs jumped on the board in the top of the first as Collin Cowgill smashed a home run deep over the left-field wall to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Lehigh Valley loaded the bases in the fourth inning but David Hale worked out of the jam getting Dean Anna to hit into a fielder s choice. Hale had a solid outing for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre throwing 4.2 innings allowing only one run on five hits and striking out seven. The IronPigs threatened again in the top of the fifth loading the bases once again, but J.P. Feyereisen was able to get Matt McBride to fly out to right field. The RailRiders responded in the bottom of the fifth when Zack Zehner led off with a double, Wilkin Castillo sacrifice bunted him to third, and L.J. Mazzilli smacked a single to plate Zehner. Mark Payton then singled and Brandon Drury doubled which scored Mazzilli and Payton and gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-1 lead. Feyereisen picked up his third win of the season in his 2.1 innings of work in which he only allowed one hit. Cody Carroll snagged his sixth save of the year and did not allow a base runner in his one-inning outing. The RailRiders did not have one player with a multiple hit game; yet, eight of the nine Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starters had a hit in the game. swb g avg ab h r hr bb k sb hitting swb w-l era ip h r er bb k hr pitching New York Yankees (MLB) W 4-3 vs. Seattle Mariners Clint Frazier: 2-4, R Aaron Judge: 1-3, HR (19), 2 RBI Miguel Andujar: 1-3, HR (10), 2 RBI Luis Severino: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 3R/3ER *11-2, 2.24 ERA in 16G/16GS last homestand statistics around the organization Trenton Thunder (AA) L 7-1 vs. Binghamton Rumble Ponies Jeff Hendrix: 2-3, BB, K Abiatal Avelino: 3-4, 2B, HR (7), RBI Rest of Team: 0-for-25, 7 K Brian Keller: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 7R/7ER, 5 K David Sosebee: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K news & notes ROLLING ALONG: The Scranton Wilkes/Barre RailRiders head to Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y. for the first time this season Friday night. It s the first of two trips north for SWB, including a visit July 30 - August 2. The RailRiders have won three straight series entering the weekend set against the Rochester Red Wings, starting with taking 3-of-4 from Rochester June Over the last 11 games, the RailRiders have an 8-3 record which is tops in the International League. By taking 2-of-3 against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, SWB has now drawn back to within 5.5 games of first place. WELCOME BACK: OF Zack Zehner was added back to the RailRiders roster Tuesday after a 21G stint away with the Double-A Trenton Thunder. He went an unceremonious 0-for-4 with 3K in his return to the lineup Tuesday, and was not in Wednesday s starting lineup. However, with LHP Zac Curtis on the mound for the IronPigs Zehner was called upon to pinch-hit for left-handed INF Bruce Caldwell with two outs in the 9 th inning. He delivered a walk-off two-run homer, which was the second walk-off HR of the season for the RailRiders (INF Abiatal Avelino, 4/6 vs. Syracuse). It was also the 6th walk-off win for the RailRiders this season, the last three of which (5/15, 5/17, 6/20) have come against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. POWERING UP: In the blink of an eye, the SWB RailRiders are the leading HR-hitting team in the International League. At the end of April, the team had 15 HR in 23G (0.65 HR/G) which was good for 6 th in the 14-team I.L. Since then, Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre has 57 HR in its last 48G (1.21 HR/G) including 24 in 18G so far in June (1.33 HR/G). NEEDING SOME LENGTH: Due to Monday s off-day, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders bullpen was well-rested entering Tuesday s game even though the pitching staff has not been able to provide much depth at the start of games. RHP Chance Adams started Tuesday s game and lasted 4.0 IP while throwing 89 pitches, before a combination of four relievers tossed the final 5.0 innings. Over the last 8G, the only pitcher to have thrown at least six innings was LHP Josh Rogers who went 7.0 innings in Syracuse and followed that up with 6.0 innings Wednesday for the RailRiders.
