1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #132 / Home Game #66 Lehigh Valley IronPigs (73-58) at Indianapolis Indians (68-63) Tuesday, August 23, First 7:05 p.m. EDT Victory Field -- Indianapolis, Indiana IronPigs RHP Scott Mathieson (2-1, 2.34 ERA) vs. Indians RHP Sean Gallagher (5-12, 5.16 ERA) TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: RHP Sean Gallagher looks to give the Indians the series victory over the IronPigs when he takes to the mound tonight... Gallagher has faced Lehigh Valley once this season, earning the victory on June 21 after allowing just two hits and four walks, while striking out five over five scoreless innings of work... The right hander hopes to bounce back from a loss in his last outing on August 18 against Louisville in which he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out five over five innings pitched... Gallagher s last win this season came as on reliever on July 18 when he surrendered just a single score on one hit over 3.2 innings of relief against Charlotte... Despite an 0-1 record, Gallagher has turned in his best ERA in any month of the season so far in August, posting a 3.71 ERA (7 ER in 17.0 IP) over four appearances (three starts)... Left handers have hit Gallagher hard this season, posting a.321 average (67-for-209) with 30 extra-base hits, while right handers have struggled against him turning in just a.201 mark (47-for-234) with only 18 extra-base knocks... The right hander has struggled in the early innings this season, posting a 6.01 ERA (43 ER in 64.1 IP) over the first, second and third innings, as opposed to a 4.14 ERA (25 ER in 54.1 IP) in all other frames. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Looking to gain the series split for the IronPigs will be RHP Scott Mathieson... Mathieson has not faced the Tribe this season, though he dominated the Indians as a closer with the IronPigs last season, notching three saves over four appearances, while striking out seven and walking none over five innings of work... The right hander made the switch to the starting rotation on June 19 this season and had dominated ever since doing so, posting a 2-1 record and miniscule 1.94 ERA (9 ER in 41.2 IP) over nine starts with 49 strikeouts in his 41.2 innings pitched... If he had enough innings to qualify, Mathieson s 1.94 ERA since he became a starter would be the second best in the International League since that point, trailing only Durham s Alex Torres (1.92)... Mathieson has not allowed a run over his last 16.1 innings, while striking out 14 during the scoreless streak... The right hander has held left handed batters to a.182 average (16-for-88), while right handers haven t fared much better hitting just.224 (37-for-165) against him. TRIBE TRENDS: With last night s 2-0 win, the Indians have now defeated the IronPigs in two consecutive contests at home for the first time since Lehigh Valley joined the International League in Last night s win also assured the Indians their first ever winning record in a season against the IronPigs as Indianapolis now holds a 5-2 advantage in the season series this year with just one game to go... Along with the 5-2 record, Indians pitchers have combined for a 2.32 (16 ER in 62.0 IP), while striking out 65 and walking just 22 over 62 innings against Lehigh Valley this season... With his 2-for-4 effort in last night s contest, OF Alex Presley maintains his IL best batting average of INF Jordy Mercer went 1-for-3 to continue an excellent month of August during which he continues to be tied for first in the IL with 18 runs scored... The Indians have hit just.147 (10-for-68) with runners in scoring position during the current homestand and only.233 (46-for-197) with runners in scoring position during the month of August. STARTING STRONG: Just one day after RHP Jose Ascanio, allowed just two hits and struck out seven over six shutout innings, last night s Indians starter Brian Burres turned in the best statistical start for an Indians hurler this season as he set new Indianapolis season highs with eight shutout innings and nine strikeouts... The nine punchouts also matched a career high for Burres, who has struck out nine on three other occasions in his career with the most recent coming on July 17, 2009, while with Triple-A Las Vegas... The nine K s were also the most for an Indians hurler since LHP Dana Eveland struck out nine over just four innings of work on September 2 last season against Louisville, while the eight innings pitched were the most since RHP Jeremy Powell went 8.2 innings on July 29 last season in Syracuse. BOWKER AT BAT: OF John Bowker went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored last night and has now collected a base hit in each game of the current 10-game homestand... During the now seven-game streak, Bowker is hitting.462 (12-for-26) with six doubles, two runs and three RBI... The left handed slugger s six doubles during the streak are the most in the International League over that span, while his 12 hits are tied for first and his.462 average is third... Since joining the Indians on May 8, Bowker ranks first in the IL with 193 total bases and trails only teammate Matt Hague (121) in hits with Also since his arrival, Bowker ranks third in the IL in RBI (68), fourth in doubles (27), tied for fourth in extra-base hits (43), eighth in slugging percentage (.501) and tied for ninth in home runs (15). HOLDING HIS OWN AT HOME: Indians C Dusty Brown went 1-for-3 and drove in both Tribe runs in last night s contest to continue his impressive run as of late... In the last four contests in which he has played, Brown has blasted opposing pitchers to the tune of a.571 batting average (8-for-14) with three runs, two doubles and two RBI... The dominating effort continues a great run of success for Brown at Victory Field this season as the right handed slugger is now hitting a team best.371 (33-for-89) with 12 runs, 11 doubles, five home runs, 16 RBI, 11 walks, a.447 on-base percentage, a.663 slugging percentage and an amazing OPS over 29 games played in Indianapolis... Of current players in the International League (minimum five games played), Brown s OPS is the best for any player at their home park, while his.371 home batting average and.447 on-base percentage trails only Columbus Travis Buck (.375 BA and.483 OBP in 15 games) and his.663 home slugging percentage trails only Columbus OF Jerad Head s.673 slugging percentage in 58 home games. HUGHES HOLDING DOWN THE COMPETITION: Tribe reliever Jared Hughes has now turned in seven straight scoreless relief appearances, allowing just one hit over his 7.1 innings of work... During his scoreless streak Hughes has struck out eight batters and has now struck out 42 batters over his 36.1 innings of work out of the Indianapolis bullpen.
