1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS BASEBALL 2008 SEASON IN REVIEW REGULAR SEASON RECORD TEAM NOTES A GOOD YEAR FOR ATTENDANCE: For the second straight season Indianapolis saw their total attendance increase... The Tribe hosted 606,166 fans (8,538 per game) at Victory Field in its best regular-season total since The Indians also averaged over 10,000 fans per game during a 38-game stretch from June 19 to the end of the season on August 30. CLOSE CONTESTS: The Indians were involved in the most one-run contests in all of Minor League baseball in The Tribe played in a one-run contest in 14 of their final 24 games and finished the season with a record in one-run affairs... The 31 losses were tied for the most in all of Minor League baseball, while the 26 wins tied Indianapolis with Columbus and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the most one-run victories in the International League. VICTORIES AT THE VIC : The Indians started the season 5-0 at home -- their best home start in over 70 years... The franchise s day-by-day archives go back to 1938, and, during that period, the Tribe has never opened the campaign with five straight home victories... Indianapolis finished the season with a home record... The Indians are now at Victory Field in three years as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. STARTING OFF STRONG: The Indians put together their longest winning streaks of the season (5 games) from April 5-9 and April The season s first month also included the Tribe s best overall stretch when they won 10 of 11 contests from April SWIPING BASES IS WHAT WE DO: Indianapolis finished the season with an International League best 198 stolen bases... The swipes total was the most for the Tribe since they swiped 205 bags in 1984 and was tied for eighth in all of Minor League baseball... The Indians, who also led all of Triple-A baseball in steals, have now paced the IL in thefts in each of the past four seasons (163 in 07, 180 in 06 and 163 in 05). STOCKPILING THE STRIKEOUTS: Tribe pitchers collected 984 strikeouts during the 2008 season... According to the franchise archives it is the third largest total in Indians history, trailing only the 989 in 1993 and the 1050 in WHO S ON THE ROSTER??: Indianapolis racked up 143 roster moves in The total follows up 156 transactions in 2007 and 122 in INDIVIDUAL NOTES WALKER NAMED 2008 MVP: INF Neil Walker was named the Tribe s 2008 Most Valuable Player... The Triple-A rookie batted.242 with a team-high 16 homers, seven triples and 80 RBI in 133 games during the 2008 season... Walker finished the season with a.947 fielding percentage and a highlight reel full of spectacular plays in just his first full season at the third base position... He also collected 30 multi-hit performances and a team-best 20 multi-rbi efforts during the 2008 campaign. AN ALL-STAR DUO: Indians OF Andrew McCutchen and INF Brian Bixler combined to go 3-for-6 with one run and two RBI in the 2008 Triple-A All-Star Game... The Pacific Coast League All-Stars scored six times in the ninth inning and held off a final rally by the International League All-Stars for a 6-5 victory at Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Ky... Matt Brown of the Salt Lake Bees was named the PCL Star of the Game, while McCutchen took home the award for the IL. TRADE WINDS BLOWING: Three players acquired by the Pirates in deadline deals made their way through Indianapolis during the 2008 season... RHP Ross Ohlendorf and RHP Daniel McCutchen from the Yankees along with RHP Craig Hansen from the Red Sox each spent time in Indianapolis. 2 2008 Season In Review... Page INDIVIDUAL NOTES (continued) ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: OF Andrew McCutchen was named the Indians Rookie of the Year... He finished the season with a.283 batting average, nine homers, 50 RBI and a team-best.372 on-base percentage, 75 runs, 68 walks, 34 stolen bases and 135 games played... The 21-year-old also ranked among International League leaders in hits, walks, games played, stolen bases and on-base percentage throughout the 2008 season. SLUGGER OF THE YEAR: INF/OF Steve Pearce was named the Indians Slugger of the Year... He finished the season with a.251 batting average, 12 homers, 60 RBI and team-best 26 doubles in 103 games played... The 25-year-old ranked among the team leaders in home runs, RBI and doubles throughout most of the season even with two separate Major League call-ups to Pittsburgh. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: INF Brian Bixler was named the Indians Defensive Player of the Year... He recorded a.981 fielding percentage with just seven errors in 359 total chances between second base and shortstop... The 25-year-old was also involved in 43 of the team s 104 double plays even after spending over a month in Pittsburgh (April 6-May 27)... Bixler also recorded three separate six-game hitting streaks (June 8-14, June 16-22, August 2-7). HENRY SMOCK RELIEF PITCHER OF THE YEAR: RHP Jesse Chavez was named the Indians Henry Smock Relief Pitcher of the Year... He went 2-6 with a 3.80 ERA and team-best 14 saves, 70 strikeouts and 51 appearances for the Indians before receiving the first Major League call-up of his career on August He also collected eight saves and posted a 2.65 ERA over his last 16 relief outings of the season (5 ER in 17.0 IP). Chavez shut down right-handed batters throughout the season allowing just a.177 batting average, while striking out 42 and walking only nine... He also posted a 0.98 ERA (2 ER in 18.1 IP) over 10 outings from April 7 to May 3. APRIL POTM : RHP Marino Salas was named the Indians April Player of the Month... Salas went 2-0 with an 0.51 ERA over 10 relief appearances during the season s first month... He allowed just 12 hits and a.194 batting average while striking out 17 in 17.2 innings.... He also led the Indians in ERA during the month, while ranking second in WHIP (0.91) and saves (2), and third in appearances. MAY POTM : OF Andrew McCutchen was named the Indians May Player of the Month... He hit.304 with two home runs and 10 RBI during the season s second month... The 21-year-old recorded eight multi-hit performances and three multi-run efforts, while ranking second in all of Triple-A Baseball with 12 stolen bases in May... He also tallied a.411 slugging percentage and.391 on-base percentage during the stretch. JUNE POTM : RHP Jimmy Barthmaier was named the Indians June Player of the Month... Barthmaier went 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA over four starts in June... He allowed just five walks, 19 hits and a.213 batting average while striking out 25 in 24.2 innings... During the month, Barthmaier also led all Indians starters in ERA, strikeouts, batting average against, WHIP (0.97) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5-to-1), while ranking second in innings pitched. JULY POTM : RHP Evan Meek was named the Indians July Player of the Month... Meek turned in an 0.51 ERA with no decisions over nine relief appearances in July... He allowed just one walk, eight hits and a.133 batting average, while striking out 16 in 17.2 innings... During the month, Meek led all Tribe hurlers in ERA, batting average against, strikeout-to-walk ratio and WHIP (0.51). AUGUST POTM : INF Luis Cruz was named the Indians August Player of the Month... Cruz turned in a.321 batting average with three home runs, 14 RBI and 18 runs during the season s final month... The 24-year-old also recorded 11 multi-hit performances and three multi-run efforts during the month, and batted.357 with 10 runs and nine RBI over his last 10 contests (Aug. 22-Sept. 1). THREE INDIANS NAMED AMONG THE IL S BEST: Center fielder Andrew McCutchen, third baseman Neil Walker and right handed pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier were all named among the International League s best in the Aug. 25 edition of Baseball America... The three Indians were all listed among the best in the International League in Baseball America s annual Best Tools issue... Page INDIVIDUAL NOTES (continued) BULLINGTON BREAKS OUT: RHP Bryan Bullington was named IL Pitcher of the Week for the period of May The 27-year-old went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA (2 ER in 13 IP) in two starts during the stretch... The victories for Bullington came over eventual division champions Louisville (8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO). BIG NAMES ON REHAB: Indianapolis featured two accomplished Major Leaguers on rehabilitation assignments during the 2008 season... INF Jack Wilson, a 2004 National League All-Star and the Pirates highest paid player, went 4-for12 with two runs and two RBI in four games with the Tribe... RHP Matt Capps, who led the Pirates in appearances and converted 18 of 20 saves as the clubs closer in 2007, tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless releif in one appearance for the Tribe. MORGAN MOVING ON UP: Before his second call-up on Aug. 19, Indians OF Nyjer Morgan was one of the hottest hitters in the International League, posting a.410 batting average (25-for-61) with 15 runs, 14 RBI and 12 stolen bases over a 16 period... During the stretch, Morgan collected nine multi-hit games including a four-hit contest against Toledo on August 3 He also tied a 72-year-old team record, set by Robert Fausett on May 14, 1936, with five swipes against Durham on August 15. THE TOP TANDEM IN TRIPLE-A BASEBALL: Indianapolis OF Nyjer Morgan and OF Andrew Mc- Cutchen ranked as the top stolen base tandem in all of Triple-A baseball until Morgan was recalled by Pittsburgh on August Morgan ranked second in the International League with 44 swipes before the time of his call-up. ONE-HIT WONDERS: The Indians recorded two one-hit shutouts during the 2008 season... RHP Bryan Bullington combined with RHP Jesse Chavez and RHP Marino Salas on a one-hit shutout of Buffalo on June 25, while RHP John Van Benschoten, RHP Mike Thompson, RHP Romulo Sanchez and RHP Jonah Bayliss combined on a one-hitter April 22 against Louisville. EVAN NOT SO MEEK: Tribe RHP Evan Meek registered the team s longest scoreless innings streak from June 28 to July During the stretch, Meek allowed just 10 hits, while striking out 18 and walking only four. AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS: Indians OF Andrew McCutchen finished the season ranked among the International League s leaders in walks (3rd, 68), games played (3rd, 135), stolen bases (7th, 34), hits (T-9th, 145) and on-base percentage (10th,.372), while INF Neil Walker ranked fifth in games played (133), tied for ninth in triples (7) and 10th in RBI (80)... RHP Jesse Chavez also placed ninth among all IL pitchers with 14 saves on the season. FORMER INDIAN INDUCTED: Former Indian Don Buford, who earned team and league Most Valuable Player honors in 1963, was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in ceremony at Victory Field on June Buford, who helped the Tribe to an regular-season mark and Governors Cup Championship in 1963, also lead the IL in batting average (.336), hits (206), runs (114), doubles (41) and stolen bases (42) that seaso... He was also later honored by the Sporting News as Minor League Baseball s Player of the Year in The three-time World Series participant went on to enjoy part of 10 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, hitting.264 with 93 home runs and 418 RBI in nearly 1,300 contests.
