Sept INF Russ Johnson -- add -- Russ Johnson has been acquired from Double-A Altoona (Pa.)... The 34-year-old posted a.205 BA with three HR and fi ve RBI in 13 Double-A contests this year... Johnson started the 2007 campaign with Indianapolis... He batted.272 with six HR and 43 RBI in 90 Triple-A contests before being assigned to the Curve on Aug. 17. THE LAST TIME OUT Friday, Aug Louisville 4, Indianapolis 2 INDIANAPOLIS -- First baseman Joey Votto collected a pair of RBI doubles, while right-hander Justin Mallett scattered just four hits over fi ve frames as Louisville posted a 4-2 win over Indianapolis in front of 12,635 Friday night at Victory Field. The Bats improve to overall and on the road, while the Indians fall to on the season and at home. The Tribe has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but still has a chance to register its third straight winning season. Mallett (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) picked up the win in the fi rst Triple-A start of his fi ve-year professional career. Bats LHP Tyler Pelland (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) and RHP Ricky Stone (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) combined for four scoreless innings of relief, with Pelland collecting his sixth hold and Stone notching his team-leading 15th save. Louisville grabbed a lead it would not relinquish by plating two runs in the sixth. 2B Luis Bolivar started things with a base knock to left and raced home on 1B Joey Votto s (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) 21st double of the season to left. Votto trotted plateward moments later on LF Buck Coats (2-for-4, 2 RBI) single to center. The Bats knotted the contest with two runs in the fourth. Bolivar was hit by a pitch and scored on Votto s two-bagger to right. Coats and Votto then traded places on a double to left. Indianapolis recorded two runs in the third when RHP Bryan Bullington singled to center, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on LF Andrew McCutchen s double to right center. McCutchen then raced plateward with a pair of stolen bases. The Indians tied a season high with six thefts in the contest. 1B Yurendell de Caster (2), CF Nyjer Morgan (2) and McCutchen (2) each swiped two bases in the affair. Steven Pearce joined us from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) on July 30 and had a great month of August. Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker and Dave Davidson were all promoted from Altoona on Aug. 17, and I ve been pleased with the way they ve performed over the past two weeks. ON FIRST BASEMAN/RIGHT FIELDER STEVEN PEARCE Steven Pearce has put up some offensive numbers that are very rare. Steven has enjoyed success at three different levels this year. He s adjusted quickly at every stop (Lynchburg, Altoona and Indianapolis), and I m sure that s been a big part of the success he s had. Steven believes in himself. He goes into new situations with the attitude that I m the man for this job. Steven has been very confi dent and focused on what he s wanted to accomplish at the plate. He s done a nice job gathering information, fi ltering information and utilizing his skills towards those situations. Steven is very mature and confi dent from an offensive standpoint. He s given us a big boost from an RBI standpoint, and I feel like he can be a run-producing bat on a consistent basis. I think Steven will have opportunities to be successful in the future, and I m sure he ll take advantage of the chances he s given. ON OUTFIELDER ANDREW McCUTCHEN Andrew McCutchen had a terrifi c Major League Spring Training. I think that s a credit to his preparation, hunger and desire. Andrew is a very talented kid who is alert and coachable. I m very confi dent that Andrew will turn into a solid ball player. His speed and hands are huge assets, and he s capable of playing all three outfi eld positions. ON NEIL WALKER COMING FROM A TRUE SPORTS FAMILY Neil Walker comes from a sports family. You take a look at his bio in the media guide, and many of his family members have played professional sports. Neil s father, Tom, pitched in the Major Leagues for Montreal, Detroit, St. Louis and California from His older brother, Matt, was selected by Detroit in the 37th round of the 2000 draft. His older sister, Carrie, signed a pro basketball contract with Killarney of the Women s Irish Super League after graduating from Wagner College. His uncle, Chip Lang, pitched in the big leagues for Montreal from Neil is also the brother-in-law of Don Kelly, who is one of our infi elders. I m sure it s exciting for Carrie to have her husband and brother on the same Triple-A team. Who knows? Maybe they ll be together in the big leagues at some point down the road. ON LEFT-HANDED PITCHER DAVE DAVIDSON Dave Davidson has a special pitch. His sinker is really, really good. I think everything will fall into place once he learns to trust it and utilize it to its maximum effi ciency. Dave hasn t pitched a great deal for various reasons, but he s a guy who did fi ne in Double-A and he seems to be settling in well at the Triple-A level.
