Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the country, Tadlock produced several of the nation s top recruiting classes at Oklahoma while helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since Tadlock worked with the Red Raider defense during the 2012 season where they finished with a.971 fielding percentage, which ranks second all-time at Texas Tech. Following his first season at Tech, the Red Raiders had a record-breaking Major League Baseball Draft as nine Texas Tech players were selected a new school record. Included in the signees were center fielder Barrett Barnes, who became the third highest draft pick in Tech history as he was taken in the supplemental first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 45th overall pick. Also taken were second baseman Jamodrick McGruder (9th Round Seattle), right-handed pitcher Shane Broyles (14th Round Colorado), right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann (15th Round Los Angeles Dodgers), catcher Bo Altobelli (21st Round Minnesota), third baseman Reid Redman (23rd Round Tampa Bay), left-handed pitcher Daniel Coulombe (25th Round Los Angeles Dodgers), right-handed pitcher John Neely (30th Round Houston) and left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn (31st Round Seattle). The nine MLB Draft selections tied for the second most by any NCAA program while only Arizona State (10) had more. Nine draft picks marked the fifth most in Big 12 history. In addition, five of Tech s position players earned All-Big 12 recognition during Tadlock s first season at Tech, including McGruder (first team), Barnes (first team), first baseman Scott LeJeune (second team), Altobelli (honorable mention) and shortstop Tim Proudfoot (All-Freshman Team). It didn t take Tadlock long to make his mark on the recruiting trail at Oklahoma, as his 2006 recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The No. 4 ranking was the best for the Sooners since Tadlock also had top-25 nationally ranked recruiting classes by Baseball America in 2006 (11th), 2009 (16th), 2010 (21st) and 2012 (13th). In addition, OU s 2012 recruiting class received a No. 4 ranking this fall by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. During his tenure at Oklahoma ( ), the Sooners made five trips to the NCAA Tournament with two Super Rgional appearances in 2006 and 2010 while making it back to the College World Series in Omaha in It marked OU s first time to make five post-season appearances in a six year span since The Sooners had unparalleled success at the plate under Tadlock s guidance. Oklahoma batted over.300 during all six of his seasons first time for OU since and his 2009 and 2010 clubs combined for 195 home runs, the most ever at Oklahoma in consecutive seasons while leading the Big 12 in homers both years. The Sooners 104 home runs in 2010 rank second all-time in Oklahoma history. While an assistant at Oklahoma, Tadlock mentored 41 players who were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft. In 2011 the Sooners had 11 players taken in the draft which tied an all-time Big 12 record (Texas, 2007). In fact, during three of Tadlock s six years with the Sooners at least nine players were taken in the draft. After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs ( ). Overall, Tadlock guided the Grayson program to five championships along with five District V championships and while eight Vikings earned All-America honors during his tenure as head coach. The Red Raiders benefited from six players that transferred to Tech from Tadlock s program at Grayson while he was head coach. Included in those student-athletes are Texas Tech All-American shortstop Cameron Blair ( ) and former Major League catcher Trey Lunsford ( ). During his tenure at Grayson ( ), Tadlock recorded the highest winning percentage of any collegiate baseball coach, including all two and four-year institutions, with a.774 winning percentage. While at Grayson, Tadlock also served as the school s director of athletics, a position he began in August After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders while helping Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). 9 GAME NOTES ON THE HORIZON Tech returns home where it will play nine of its final 10 regular season games. Tech will start that stretch playing New Mexico (April 30-May 1) in a home midweek series before hosting Oklahoma State, May 3-5, for a three-game series at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. OKLAHOMA ALL-TIME SERIES Texas Tech and Oklahoma meet for the 67th time on Friday as OU holds a lead in the all-time series dating back to 1976, while the Sooners also hold a advantage in games played in Norman... Last season the Sooners won two of three games over Tech in Lubbock. Tech s win in the series opener snapped a four-game losing streak to the Sooners that included three league matchups in 2011 and a loss in the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City. The last time Tech won a series in Norman was in 1999 when Tech swept the Sooners. Since 2003, Oklahoma leads the series 21-6 and is 10-2 against Tech in Norman. BIG 12 CONFERENCE TEAM BIG 12 OVERALL Oklahoma Kansas Kansas State Baylor Oklahoma State West Virginia TCU Texas Texas Tech TEXAS TECH COACHING STAFF IS QUITE FAMILIAR WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA It won t take long for the Texas Tech coaching staff to recognize its surroundings this weekend as head coach Tim Tadlock and three of his staff members have spent a considerable amount of time on the Oklahoma campus as a coach, student-athlete or both. For Red Raider fans its nice to see these four individuals in the Tech dugout after the Red Raiders were against Oklahoma in years where either Tadlock, Ray Hayward, Russell Raley or Joe Hughes were a member of the Sooners as a player or coach from , Below is a look at each of the Tech coaches/staff members and their careers as a Sooner. TIM TADLOCK (Head Coach) Oklahoma Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator ( ) It s hard to remember a stretch where the Sooners were better for a six-year span than when Tadlock was handling the recruiting and hitting duties. He helped lead the Sooners to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including two Super Regionals and to the 2010 College World Series. He landed four top-25 recruiting classes in Norman, including the No. 4 ranked class in 2006 and Tadlock s hitters batted over.300 during all six of his seasons, a first for OU since It also marked OU s first time reaching five NCAA Tournaments in a six-year span since He mentored 41 Major League Baseball Draft picks and tied a Big 12 record with 11 MLB Draft picks in Three of Tadlock s six seasons at OU the Sooners had at least nine players selected in the MLB Draft. RAY HAYWARD (Pitching Coach) Oklahoma Player ( ), Oklahoma Pitching Coach ( ) Hayward is arguably the greatest all-around baseball player in Oklahoma history. He completed his playing career in Norman as the No. 10 overall pick in the 1983 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres - becoming the second highest drafted left-handed pitcher in school history ( LHP Bob Shirley, 8th overall pick - San Diego Padres). Hayward not only won 26 career games on the mound at OU (ranks 4th all-time in OU history), but he also owns a career.381 average, which ranks sixth all-time at Oklahoma. He remains in eight OU all-time record books while his 293 career strikeouts rank fourth and his 30 career complete games are a school record. He also hit 30 career home runs which ranks 10th in school history. He returned to his alma mater as pitching coach for the 2000 season where the Sooners pitching staff set a school record with 21 saves - a mark that remains today as the program s most saves in a single-season. He helped lower the OU pitching staff ERA from 6.25 to 4.74 in his first season. His first season he mentored two OU pitchers that received All-America recognition - an impressive fact when considering the previous 15 seasons only one Sooner pitcher had received All-America status. Overall, five of Hayward s pitchers continue to hold school records while a total of six of his arms received All-America honors. He developed 13 pitchers at Oklahoma that became MLB Draft picks, including five that were taken in the top-10 rounds of the draft. RUSSELL RALEY (Assistant Coach) Oklahoma Player ( ), Oklahoma Assistant Coach ( ) As a player and assistant coach, Raley helped lead the Sooners to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in eight seasons in Norman. As a player, Raley was a three-time All-Big 12 selection as one of the top players in the league from He played in 208 career games with 191 starts while batting.314 (237-for-754) 143 runs, 27 doubles and 103 RBI. He remains in three OU all-time record books, including seventh in at-bats (754), eighth in games played (208) and 10th in base hits (237). He played in regionals in Oklahoma City (host) in 2004, Oxford, Miss. in 2005 and won the Norman Regional in 2006 while playing in the Rice Super Regional in Houston that season. His fourth win gave him the team lead and also marked the most wins by a Tech left-handed reliever (majority of appearances as a reliever) in a single-season since 2006 when Colt Hynes won five games. TECH S RETURN HOME DURING THE MIDWEEK EQUALLED IMMEDIATE SUCCESS Texas Tech played a month straight on the road during midweek play before hosting New Mexico State where its 6-1 victory gave Tech a 4-0 record at home during midweek play. Prior to hosting NMSU, Tech s most recent home midweek game was on March 19 against No. 20 Arizona State - a game the Red Raiders won 8-7. Tech also swept a two-game midweek series from Utah Valley in Lubbock earlier this season. RED RAIDERS HOLD NMSU AGGIES HITLESS WITH RUNNERS ON BASE IN MIDWEEK TILT Texas Tech s five pitchers that saw action against New Mexico State on April 23 in Lubbock held the Aggies hitless with runners on base as the Aggies went 0-for-11 with runners aboard. NMSU had six hits and five walks in the contest along with one batter reaching base with a hit-by-pitch. TECH BULLPEN COMING UP STRONG AGAINST KANSAS IN SERIES FINALE AND IN MIDWEEK AGAINST NMSU The Texas Tech bullpen saw tremendous results during a two-game stretch against Kansas (series finale - Apr. 21) and New Mexico State (midweek - Apr. 23) where it recorded a 0.93 ERA allowing just one earned run in 9.2 innings. During that stretch a total of six Red Raiders pitched out of the bullpen while they combined for seven strikeouts and a.188 opponent batting average in both games played in Lubbock at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. THE CALENDAR SAYS APRIL DOESN IT? Texas Tech had started getting used to playing in warm temperatures on a game-by-game basis, but on Tuesday, April 23, Tech and New Mexico State faced some challenging weather conditions. The first-pitch temperature in Lubbock was 43 degrees with wind chills dipping into the low 30 s for the 6 p.m. contest. It marked Tech s third coldest first-pitch temperature of the season, just one degree higher than Opening Day s 42 degrees on Feb. 17 and two degrees warmer than it was in the series opener at West Virginia (Charleston, W. Va.) on April 22 when it was 41 degrees. To compare, Tech s coldest first-pitch temp last season during the month of April was 61 degrees in Lubbock against Houston on April 15. DALTON BROWN BECOMES TECH S FIFTH PITCHER WITH A SAVE - FOURTH RED RAIDER FRESHMAN Freshman Dalton Brown slammed the door in the ninth inning and recorded the last out of the eighth inning during Tech s win over New Mexico State (Apr. 23) while becoming the fifth Red Raider with at least one save. Brown s save was the fourth by a Red Raider freshman. In fact, the last time Tech had at least five pitchers with a save was in 2010 when six different pitchers had at least one save while setting a school record with 19 saves as a team. PROUDFOOT HITS 2ND CAREER SLAM - FASTEST RED RAIDER TO A PAIR OF GRAND SLAMS SINCE 2007 Sophomore shortstop Tim Proudfoot ended the Kansas series finale with a grand slam while giving Tech the 16-5 win in eight innings. The home run was Proudfoot s second career grand slam. His first career grand slam was his first career homer in 2012 against Alabama A&M. Since 2006, Texas Tech has hit 15 grand slams, but only three players during that stretch have hit two. Proudfoot is the second fastest Red Raider (since 2006) to hit a pair of grand slams needing just 92 career games. Only Roger Kieschnick has hit two career grand slams faster than Proudfoot as the former Freshman All-American needed only 64 career games. Kieschnick ended up hitting four grand slams in his career. TECH YOUTH ON DISPLAY AT NO. 22 RICE Texas Tech lost at No. 22 Rice, 11-2, while using seven pitchers, six of which were freshmen. Freshman right-handed pitcher Justin Bethard started the game, marking his first career start. Other freshmen pitchers to see action against Rice were RHP Dalton Brown (0.1 IP), RHP Matt Withrow (2.0 IP), RHP Matt Custred (0.1 IP), RHP Johnathon Tripp (1.1 IP) and LHP Reid Meyer (0.1 IP). Overall, Tech has seven freshman pitchers and five freshman position players who have played this season. NO PLACE LIKE HOME Texas Tech plays nine of its final 13 games of the season on its home field at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Tech is 14-7 at home this season while going 5-15 in road and neutral site games this season. RED RAIDERS 6 WINS AWAY FROM 1,500TH ALL-TIME VICTORY The Texas Tech baseball program is only nine wins away from reaching 1,500 all-time in 64 seasons of collegiate baseball. The Red Raiders milestone victory will come in their 25th win of the 2013 season. BIG 12 STOLEN BASE LEADER - NO SURPRISE, A RED RAIDER Since the start of the Big 12 Conference in 1997, there have been five Red Raiders that have led the league in stolen bases - a total that leads the conference. Currently, sophomore outfielder and leadoff hitter Brett Bell leads the league with 27 stolen bases in 38 games played. Last season, Tech All-American Jamodrick McGruder led the Big 12 with 39 stolen bases while ranking fourth in the nation. He became the highest ranked Big 12 player in the history of the league in the national stolen base rankings. Comparing Bell to McGruder, through 38 games last season McGruder had 29 stolen bases.
