H ER BB SO 4 Suwinski Homers, But TinCaps Swept By Cory Stace FORT WAYNE, Indiana TinCaps returning left fielder Jack Suwinski homered for the first time this season on Sunday at Parkview Field, but Fort Wayne lost a pair, -8, and, -, to the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians). Lake County (4-) and Fort Wayne (-4) picked things up in the top of the fourth inning after their game on Friday night in Eastlake, Ohio, was suspended due to snow. The TinCaps led, 6-, entering the fourth inning, however, the Captains chipped away, and then some. Lake County scored a run in the fourth, followed by a pair in each the sixth and seventh to go up, 7-6. Fort Wayne responded in the top of the eighth inning--as the visiting team on the scoreboard because of the venue change from when the game technically began on Friday--with two runs. Center fielder Jeisson Rosario plated second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza with a suicide squeeze bunt single to equalize. Two batters later, right fielder Tirso Ornelas drove in Jack Suwinski with an RBI single take to give the TinCaps an 8-7 advantage. Lake County, though, responded in the bottom half of the eighth inning with three runs to take a -8 lead that would hold for the final score. After the suspended game had concluded, the two sides then played a seven inning game, per Minor League s rules. The series finale was all Captains. Lake County built a 4- lead over their first three trips to the plate. Suwinski put Fort Wayne on the board with a solo homer to right field in the home third. But after that, the Captains pulled away with a pair in the second and an explosive six-run sixth.

4 JOPLIN, Mo. Down four runs in the ninth inning with two outs, two strikes and the bases loaded, Fort Wayne's Robert Young III hit a grand slam to tie South Dakota State at nine on Sunday (April 8) afternoon. However SDSU responded with a two-out grand slam of their own in the bottom of the ninth to give the Jackrabbits a 3-9 victory in the series finale. Fort Wayne had to rally in the contest after falling behind 5- in the first inning. It started the comeback with a three spot in the fourth. Travis Upp had an RBI single in the inning before Dylan Wilbert knocked in two with a single. It made the score 5-3. SDSU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth before Jacob Dickson hit his second solo home run in as many days for the 'Dons in the top of the fifth. Down 9-5 in the ninth, Fort Wayne Garrett Mohler singled with an out. Mike Snyder walked before Dickson struck out for the second out. Shannon Baker extended the game on a single to left. Young then came to the plate and on a count deposited the ball over the left field wall to knot the game at nine. SDSU opened the bottom of the ninth with a single. Eventually the bases were loaded for Phil Velez with two outs. Velez ended the game with a grand slam to left. It was Velez' second home run of the game. Baker finished with three hits and three runs scored. He is now hitting.373. Mohler and Brock Logan both had two hits. Duane Miller took the loss for the Mastodons. He is -. 5 Grace battles cold weather at Taylor UPLAND, Ind. - Competing in temperatures that resembled winter more than spring, Grace s track and field squad ended up in fifth place on the men's side and eighth on the women's side at the George Glass Invitational at Taylor. The mercury barely hit the 4-degree mark during the day and was in the 3s for most of the meet. Jacob Brown led a --3 sweep in the men's hammer throw, hitting the "A" qualifying standard for NAIA Nationals with a personal best toss of 74-feet-. William Shafer and Walker Hobbs helped the Lancers to the top three spots. Shafer also had a PR in the discus at 35-9 to place fifth. One spot ahead was Caleb Brown with a mark of 44-. Brown added a fourth place in the shot put at , and Hobbs was right behind at Thomas Hickerson completed a strong throwing day for Grace with a third place finish in the javelin with a throw of 49-. Isaiah Zeller ended up fourth in the pole vault with a height of In the running events, the top finish came from Sam Hall as he placed fourth in the 8-meter race in :58.3, while Josh Pridgen ran a PR of.7 in the to finish fifth. 6 Lugnuts drop twinbill to Loons, -6, 5- LANSING, Mich. The Great Lakes Loons (-) struck back after dropping the first two games of the season, sweeping the Lansing Lugnuts (-) on Sunday, -6 and 5-, at Cooley Law School Stadium. In Game, Kevin Smith knocked a two-run single and Ridge Smith slugged a two-run homer the first home run of the Lugnuts season but Brayan Morales hit a two-run single in a five-run fifth inning, and the Loons piled up hits, six walks and five hit-by-pitches on their way to victory. Lugnuts reliever Brody Rodning (Loss, -) gave up the damage, allowing the five runs on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in /3 of an inning. Added to the roster shortly before game time, Loons left-hander Austin Hamilton (Win, -) pitched /3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Melvin Jimenez, striking out three Lugnuts. In the loss, Kacy Clemens went -for-3 with a walk and Ryan Noda doubled and drew two walks. In Game, Clemens belted a two-run homer to right but the Lugnuts managed only one other hit in defeat. Caps Hang On for 8-7 Win SOUTH BEND, IN The West Michigan Whitecaps built an 8- lead and needed every single run as they held on to beat the South Bend Cubs 8-7 at Four Winds Field on Sunday afternoon. A day after a - loss featuring the Whitecaps stranding the bases loaded in the third inning, Sunday s third proved to be a much different story. The Caps jumped out to a 7- lead with seven runs in the third frame. Cole Peterson opened the scoring with a two-run double, while Colby Bortles grounded an RBI-single into left field. After a wild pitch scored Jose Quero, Dylan Rosa smashed a two-run double before Ignacio Valdez plated a run with a two-bagger of his own. In the fifth, Valdez brought home another run with a single to extend the lead to 8. Meanwhile, Caps starter Garett King cruised through his first four innings on the mound, allowing just two hits without walking a batter and striking out eight before departing in the fifth. With the game seemingly out of reach, the Cubs fought back against the Caps bullpen. South Bend scored two in the second on Jared Young s two-run fifth inning single. In the eighth, the Cubs plated five runs in an inning highlighted by Miguel Amaya s two-run homer and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Whitecaps catcher Joey Morgan to bring the score to 8-7.
