4 NOTES SCOUTING THE IUPUI JAGUARS IUPUI is also off to a 2-2 start to the season. The Jags played in Nashville, Tenn., over the weekend at a tournament hosted by Belmont. IUPUI topped the hosts 3-2 in the opener before dropping its next two to Ball State (5-4) and Lipscomb (8-0). They closed the tournament with a 5-3 win over Georgetown. Brooke Boetjer threw 21.2 of the 28 innings over the weekend and had a 1.94 ERA while striking out 16. She pitched complete games in both IUPUI wins, and she also leads the team with a.333 batting average. HARRE S WALKOFF ALSO GIVES HER PITCHING W SIU super sophomore Shaye Harre showcased her two-way ability in Southern Illinois 4-3 win over UMBC on the opening day of the season. Harre pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only two earned runs, in relief to help SIU stay within striking distance. After the Salukis tied the game at three, Harre came up in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second; and she hit a walkoff RBI single to complete her 3-for-4 day at the plate. FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTING RIGHT AWAY SIU has four freshmen in 2015, and all four showed they are ready to contribute right away. In the opening weekend of their careers, all four got extended playing time. Savannah DID YOU KNOW? Head coach Kerri Blaylock said Shaye Harre is the first pitcher in her tenure to get a pitching win and the walkoff RBI in the same game, which she did in SIU s 4-3 win over UMBC on the opening day of the season. Fisher flashed big-time potential immediately, going 3-for-5 from the plate, including her first collegiate home run. Sydney Jones also picked up three hits and an RBI. Savanna Dover threw five strikeouts in her 6.1 innings, and Jessica Heese played error-free ball while scoring a run on the basepaths. HARRE FLASHES PITCHING PROWESS EARLY Shaye Harre had a great year from the plate as a freshman in 2014, hitting.329 with 43 RBIs, but she was up and down as a pitcher, posting a 6.05 ERA in 44 innings. In her first weekend as a sophomore, Harre led the team with a 3.65 ERA and had only one walk in 7.2 innings. She earned the team s first win of the season, a 4-3 win over UMBC. SALUKIS LOOK TO REBOUND FROM 1-3 START SIU started the season 1-3 for just the second time in head coach Kerri Blaylock s 16 seasons as the head coach. The only other time one of Blaylock s teams started 1-3 was in her second season in That team rebounded from a 1-4 start to finish overall. WILSON COMES THROUGH WITH TWO OUTS Senior captain Meredith Wilson came up more than anyone with two outs in the opening weekend of the season, and she came through. The two-time All-MVC senior went 3-for-6 with a pair of two-out RBIs--both coming against Ohio State. One of Wilson s two-out RBIs was a double, the 25th of her career. PLAYING FROM BEHIND Through four games, SIU hasn t batted with a lead yet this season. Southern has had three leads, and all were surrendered in the next half inning. SIU battled back from a 3-0 deficit against Ohio State to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Buckeyes walked off with a 7-4 win on the bottom half. SIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second game against Ohio State, but the Buckeyes responded for three runs in the next half inning for a lead it wouldn t surrender. SIU s lone win was a walkoff win. SIU climbed out of a 3-0 hole against UMBC with three runs in the sixth and a walkoff game winner in the bottom of the seventh. SALUKIS DRAW WALKS SIU has consistenty been one of the most patient hitting lineups in the MVC since associate head coach and hitting coach Jen Sewell joined the staff in The Salukis have led the league in walks every season since. This year, three Salukis have early on-base percentages above.500--savannah Fisher (.600), Jessa Thomas (.571) and Shaye Harre (.571). Harre has drawn half of the team s 10 walks this year, posting an OBP that s nearly 250 points higher than her batting average (.333). OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION SPREAD OUT The offensive production from Southern s lineup has been spread out over the first four games of the season. All 14 positional players got at least one start over the first weekend. Nine came through with at least one RBI, and Meredith Wilson is the only player on the team with more than one RBI. Nine players picked up hits on the first weekend, including freshmen Savannah Fisher and Sydney Jones getting their 4 10 NCAA Tournament Appearances // 1,200 Program Wins // Four Conference Titles

5 first collegiate hits. SALUKIS PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL SIU was picked fourth in the MVC preseason coaches poll for a second-straight year. Last season, Southern went on to a MVC season and a third-place finish, the 12th top-three finish in head coach Kerri Blaylock s 15 seasons. SIU lost five starters from that team but returns four of its top five hitters and No. 1 starter Katie Bertelsen. None of Southern s players were listed on the preseason All-MVC team, but Shaye Harre hit.368 in MVC games last year on her way to second-team All-MVC honors, and Bertelsen won nine games in MVC play and had just a 3.19 ERA in league play. Last year s regular season champion, Wichita State, earned the preseason nod as the favorite in the conference. Illinois State and Northern Iowa were the other schools ahead of SIU. GONZALEZ, HARKER, WILSON NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS Junior Kelsey Gonzalez, senior Kalyn Harker and senior Meredith Wilson were named the 2015 team captains, head NOTES coach Kerri Blaylock announced in August. Gonzalez hit.328 last year, second in the MVC among shortstops. Harker, in addition to being one of the best outfielders in the MVC (only one career error and.995 career fielding percentage), hit.313 as a junior last year and showcased an impressive combination of power (10 doubles) and speed (14 stolen bases). Wilson is a two-time All-MVC hitter with 131 career starts for the Salukis under her belt. She has a.449 career slugging percentage and hit a walk-off single to beat MVC Pitcher of the Year Brittany Gardner and Loyola. BERTELSEN LEADS PITCHERS IN 2014 SIU senior Katie Bertelsen will lead the pitching staff in Bertelsen threw more than twice as many innings as any other pitcher on the staff in 2014, logging innings. Bertie won 14 games, including nine in MVC play. Fellow senior Alyssa Wunderlich and sophomore Shaye Harre also return after seeing time at pitcher in Wunderlich led the team in ERA in 2012 and got three wins in 33 innings last year. 6 career no-hitters in high school and pitched a five-inning nono in the fall season. GONZALEZ HAS BREAKOUT SOPHOMORE SEASON SIU junior captain Kelsey Gonzalez is coming off a breakout sophomore season. Gonzalez started all 52 games in her freshman year and hit.210. Last season, Gonzalez hit.328 in 47 starts and 51 total games. She hit at nearly every spot in the lineup and ended the year in the middle of the lineup. She earned MVC Player of the Week honors after she slugged.933 against Wichita State. She had two doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and 14 total bases in leading Southern to a series win over the eventual MVC champion Shockers. on the team. A pair of freshmen, Savannah Fisher and Jessica Heese, both started games in the outfield on the season s opening weekend, and Fisher blasted a home run to lead off the third inning against Charleston Southern. TEAM OVERVIEW SIU is replacing five starting positional players this year. Last year s starters included four spots around the infield (C, 1B, 2B, 3B) and one outfielder. Jayna Spivey, last year s second baseman, was a four-time All-MVC player and led the team in hitting last year with a.337 average. HARRE HAS MONSTER FRESHMAN SEASON Shaye Harre was immediately a force in the middle of the lineup for SIU as a freshman. She was second on the team in 2014 with a.329 average and hit an even better.368 in MVC play. She led the team with 43 RBIs, second in program history among freshman. Her on-base percentage, RBIs, doubles and walks all ranked among the top 10 in the MVC. Harre joined Bertelsen as a second-team All-MVC honoree after the season. DEPTH IN THE OUTFIELD Head coach Kerri Blaylock has said this has a chance to be one of the deepest outfields she has had at SIU. Team captain Kalyn Harker will anchor the unit in center field. The senior is a force both offensively and defensively, holding a career.995 fielding percentage and.288 hitter from the plate. She hit.313 with 10 doubles last year. Fellow captain Meredith Wilson has also played right field for the Salukis. Wilson is a two-time All-MVC hitter who can also help as a designated player. She has a.293 career average with 24 career doubles and 10 home runs. She has a.449 career slugging percentage and hit a walkoff single last year against Loyola to give the Salukis a win over eventual MVC Player of the Year Brittany Gardner. Merri Anne Patterson worked herself into the rotation late in the year last year and provided an instant spark to the club. Patterson entered the starting lineup against Bradley and the team quickly went on a seven-game MVC winning streak. Patterson ended up hitting.292 on the year, which was fifth on the team, and she hit.314 in MVC games, good for third Southern returns four of its top five hitters and the team s No. 1 pitcher, Katie Bertelsen. Shaye Harre (.329), Kelsey Gonzalez (.328) and Kalyn Harker (.313) all return after hitting better than.300 last year. Freshman Sydney Jones and sophomore Jessa Thomas are splitting time at the catcher spot, while Jones and Kara Kimball have been splitting time at third base. CONTINUING TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saluki Softball posted a team GPA of in the fall 2014 semester. All 17 players in the program earned at least a 3.2 GPA during the semester.
