1 ULM WARHAWK SOFTBALL GAME NOTES DATE: Saturday-Sunday, March 13-14, 2010 FIRST PITCH: 2 p.m. CST MATCHUP: North Texas (7-8, 0-0 Sun Belt) at ULM (7-9, 0-0 Sun Belt) LOCATION: ULM Softball Complex (500) -- Monroe, La. LIVE STATISTICS: ulmwarhawks.com ULM S LAST TIME OUT: Roxy Cassel hit an inside-the-park home run on Wednesday night and Tiffany Mills picked up her first win of the season to help the ULM softball team to a 4-2 non-conference victory over Mississippi Valley State. OPPONENTS LAST TIME OUT: Despite outhitting the 12th-ranked Oklahoma softball team, the Mean Green could not bring runners home in a 6-4 loss on Wednesday night at the OU Softball Complex. WARMUP PITCHES The Warhawks will begin their quest for a Sun Belt Conference title on Saturday against the Mean Green of North Texas. In a weird occurrence, it will be the fourth straight season that ULM opens league play against North Texas. The Mean Green, however, have the upper hand winning six of the last10 meetings. LEFT OF CENTER ULM has belted 10 home runs this season and all but four were hit to the left side of the field. Roxane Cassel is the lone Warhawk to hit a home run to the opposite field, an inside-the-park shot down the rightfield line in a 4-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State. RESTED AND READY TO GO The Warhawks are coming off a nine day break from competition, which was well deserved. In the month of February ULM battled in 15 games during a 16 day span. The break is the second longest layoff from play, with the Warhawks set to receive a seven day break from March The Warhawks will finish their season with 22 games over the final 39 days of the season, not counting the Sun Belt Tournament. FIRST CAREER WIN Tiffany Mills picked up her first career win during the Warhawks 4-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday, March 3. The redshirt freshman tossed a complete game seven hitter. She fanned three and walked just one. Mills had a hiccup in the top of the seventh, as she allowed a pair of earned runs on backto-back doubles. Overall, she has a 1-5 record, 4.78 ERA, and a team-best 33 strikeouts. SOPHOMORE SLUMP, I DON T THINK SO A season ago then-freshman catcher Roxane Cassel was thrust into the starting lineup after senior Megan Miller was sidelined due to a shoulder injury. Cassel went on to start 45 games and bat a mediocre.182 at the plate. This season, however, she is bursting at the seams with a.333 batting average, to go along with a team-high-tying 10 RBIs and five doubles. CASSEL S HAS A CANNON Sophomore Roxane Cassel might of had the best arm behind the plate last season in the Sun Belt Conference, as she gunned down 23 baserunners. She held Warhawk opponents to one stolen base or less in 40- of-52 games played. During three contests a season ago, Cassel threw out a pair of baserunners. This year her arm is warming up at a rapid pace, as she has already gunned down six base runners. COOL AS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW Entering the 2010 season, freshman Janel Salanoa knew the pressure was going to be immense after she was named the Warhawks starting shortstop. To the outside observer they may think that she is just having a lucky streak, but head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill and the squad will say otherwise. Salanoa was a member of the 2009 Amateur Softball Association of America Gold National team that competed on a national level prior to arriving at ULM. The San Jose, Calif., native was also named Offensive Player of the Year all four years she participated for the Evergreen Valley HS softball program. She currently leads ULM with 11 runs scored, 10 RBIs, five stolen bases, and three home runs. Salanoa is also second on the team in batting average (.356), slugging percentage (.622), and on-base percentage (.453). She is also third in total bases (28). CAUSEY RETURNS FROM INJURY AND DOMINATES Kandace Causey would have never dreamed of starting her senior season with a mess of injuries that have hampered her playing time. The right-hander might have finally cleared the injury bug and returned to her dominating self in the circle. This past Saturday against Houston Baptist she fanned seven batters to record her first complete win of the season. The win was the 27th of her career and she is now one win shy of tying Caroline Lauer (1992) for fifth all-time in program history. BATTLING RANKED OPPONENTS ULM has and will battle two ranked opponents this season. In 2008, Brianna Love hit.296 with 10 home runs, seven doubles, two triples, and 28 RBIs. In 2009, Love hit.378 with eight home runs, nine doubles, six triples, and 26 RBIs. Love was again the opening day starter to beginning the 2010 campaign and went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks in a come-from-behind victory over SEMO. Currently she is hitting.383, to go along with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, and eight RBIs. GIRARDI S GRAND SALAMI After a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases, it was time for sophomore infielder/catcher Katie Girardi to show off her big stick against No. 21 Texas A&M. In her second at-bat of the contest she fouled off her first pitch and took a strike to fall behind 0-2. Girardi then took a ball, before seeing the perfect pitch that she rode deep over the left-field wall for her first career grand slam. GRAB A GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH The Warhawks will see an increase in the total miles they will travel this year, compared to last season. During the 2010 campaign, ULM will see 8,406 miles of American countryside, 1,370 miles more than a year ago. The Warhawks will, however, ride 314 miles less during Sun Belt play than a season ago. To put the travel in perspective, ULM is estimated to watch 60 movies. ROSTER FULL OF RETURNEES Head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill s squad is full of returnees this season and that year of gained experience will help them fight for a Sun Belt Conference title. In total, 12 players return from last years team, including all three pitchers and seven positional players who made at least 35 starts. SEVEN STATE ROSTER Head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill searched far and wide to compile the best possible roster for the 2010 season. With 12 returnees and the addition of four freshman, the return of a redshirt freshman, and the transfer of a junior college player, there are seven states represented. Led by senior Kandace Causey, five players chose to stay in state, while juniors Jessica Olguin and Melissa Rivera lead a compilation of five players from California. CARDIAC KIDS The Warhawks are causing head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill added stress early in the season, because they already have a pair of come-from-behind wins. ULM opened the season down five runs to SEMO in the first inning, but it gradually fought its way back with two runs in four different frames. With runners on second and third, freshman shortstop Janel Salanoa lined a two-rbi single up the middle in the fifth inning for what proved to be the winning runs in a 9-6 decision. The Warhawks then did it again the following day, trailing 4-3 going into the seventh against Northwestern State. With a runner on first, Salanoa smoked a 3-1 fastball over the center field wall for her first career home run, a two-run bomb. CAUSEY SITS EM DOWN Kandace Causey s career statistics have improved each season she has worn a Warhawk uniform and last season was no different. ULM s ace struck out 178 batters a year ago and has now rung up 410 bat- MEDIA RELATIONS ULM MEDIA RELATIONS CONTACT Steven Schauer office: (318) cell: (920) fax: (318) schauesr@warhawks.ulm.edu POSTGAME INTERVIEWS -- will be conducted at a designated location following a NCAA mandated 10-minute cooling-off period. In addition, she has accumulated 28 victories, which is the sixth-best total in school history. VALENTINE S DAY SWEETNESS Valentine s Day not only brings love, but it brought a pair of victories for the Warhawks this season, including their first run-rule victory of the year. Since 1980, ULM is 12-9 all-time on the day of love and 3-1 in the past two seasons. On this years Valentine s Day, freshman shortstop Janel Salanoa belted a tworun blast off a 3-1 fastball over the center field wall to cap a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Northwestern State, 5-4, inside its softball complex. FRITZ EARNS MARDI GRAS CLASSIC MVP Heather Fritz entered her junior campaign looking for a breakout season and she may be well on her way to doing so after this past weekend s 2-0 record and outstanding 0.62 ERA. Her efforts didn t go unnoticed as she picked up MVP honors in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic. Fritz entered the circle in opening frame against SEMO and caught a line drive to retired the side. She then went on to strike out four and induce three innings to earn her first victory of the season. The following day against Northwestern State she again entered in a reliever s role with two runners on. She worked herself out of the jam by fanning a pair of batters to end the frame. Fritz went on to strike out four more batters in the contest and hold the Lady Demons scoreless to pick up her second-straight win in as many days. LOVE NAMED SUN BELT PLAYER OF THE WEEK Brianna Love was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 15th, in an announcement from the league s office. Love earned all-tournament honors after helping lead the Warhawks to a 3-0 record in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic this past weekend. Love hit an impressive.444 at the plate with two home runs and four walks. She also reached base 10 times, scored five runs, tallied four RBIs, and stole a base. Love s most impressive outing of the weekend was a 2-for-3 performance against Jackson State. In the third frame she hit a towering bomb over the center field wall and followed it with a two-run blast in the fourth inning to help ULM run-rule the Lady Tigers. She also had an astonishing slugging percentage and a.615 on-base percentage. Love is the first Warhawk to be named Sun Belt Player of the Week this season and it is the second weekly Sun Belt honor of her career. CASSEL, LOVE, AND SALANOA EARN MARDI GRAS CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS The Warhawks bats were clicking on all cylinders in the opening weekend of the season, as they hit an impressive.369 at the plate. Roxane Cassel, Brianna Love, and Janel Salanoa led the charge with a combined.533 batting average that included 12 RBIs, four home runs, and three doubles. Their respective efforts earned them all-tournament honors in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic. LOVE EARNS SUN BELT PRESEASON CO-POY Junior outfielder Brianna Love was chosen as the Sun Belt Conference Softball Preseason Co-Player of the Year in a preseason vote by the league s head coaches. She is also three RBIs shy of cracking the top-10 list in school history. This preseason honor is a testament to the hard work the Brianna has put in over the years, head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. I feel that she deserves every accolade that comes her way ULM VERSUS THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE Here is a breakdown of ULM s record against the current members of the Sun Belt Conference: Florida Atlantic FIU Louisiana-Lafayette Middle Tennessee North Texas South Alabama Troy Western Kentucky RECIPE FOR VICTORY Last season the Warhawks statistics during victories were impressive. In their 17 victories they hit.270 at the plate, while their pitching staff had an impressive 1.41 ERA. During ULM s wins, it was able to outscore its opponents by nearly three (2.8) runs per game and record over a strikeout (1.04) per inning. A YEARLY EVENT -- MARDI GRAS CLASSIC Since the beginning of the ULM Mardi Grass Classic in 1989, the Warhawks have experienced great success throughout the year. In the 22 years of the tournament, ULM has compiled a record. On three occasions it has finished with an unblemished record ( ; ; ; ). The Warhawks largest margin of victory came during a 13-2 thumping of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in five innings during the 2009 tournament. In the Classic, the Warhawks are no strangers to pitching shutouts, as they have done so in 19 contests, including a pair of 9-0 victories (1989 vs. Delta State; 1999 Stephen F. Austin). HOLLOWAY-HILL S 700 AND COUNTING Head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill enters her 26th season as the skipper for the ULM Warhawk softball program and has won over 600 games during her time on the third base line. The dean of the Warhawk coaching family, Holloway-Hill has won more games than any current coach at ULM. She has won three conference championships and led her teams to two postseason appearances. Holloway-Hill s 630-plus career victories at ULM ranks 31st among all active NCAA coaches. 7 NFCA with a plaque after she surpassed the 700-win plateau this past season. She has also coached the program s only All-America, Sarah Dawson, Holloway-Hill also led ULM to the 1992 Postseason National Invitational Tournament Championship. TOURNAMENT TESTED Last season ULM battled in four tournaments and came out with a 6-10 record, with several Warhawks playing well during those contests. This season ULM competed in three tournaments and finished with a 6-7 record, including winning the Mardi Gras Classic with a 3-0 record. Individually, Brianna Love led all Warhawks with a.405 average during the 13 games of tournament play. She also scored a team-high 10 runs, to go along with seven RBIs, four doubles, and two home runs. In the circle, Heather Fritz tallied a 1.42 ERA, while Jessica Chastka picked up three wins and struck out a team-best 18 batters. MID-WEEK GAMES ULM struggled during mid-week games last season, posting a 3-6 record over the course of the season, however, all three of the Warhawks victories came at home. Even though ULM was unable to make contact with the ball, hitting just.225, to go along with 12 stolen bases. The Warhawks also struck out 29 times, while ULM pitchers fanned 59 batters coming from Kandace Causey. She also finished with a.266 ERA in seven appearances and 26.1 innings in the circle. ULM IN SEASON OPENERS ULM has had mixed success on the diamond on opening day. The Warhawks are all-time to start the season, but have won 8-of-11 season openers since 2000, including this season vs. SEMO. ULM is also 2-1 in Sun Belt openers since joining the league. ULM BIG STICKS ON DISPLAY One season after just 19 home runs, its lowest total in the past five seasons, the Warhawks are well on their way to topping last season s total. Brianna Love provided the first long shot of the season in the third frame against Jackson State. Two batters later Roxane Cassel hit her own homer, before Love responded with another home run in the fourth inning. So far this season five different players have hit home runs. ULM CHOSEN EIGHTH IN SBC PRESEASON POLL Last season the Warhawks finished overall and 8-12 during conference play. In the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament they knocked off No. 1 seeded Louisiana-Lafayette, before eventually falling to the Ragin Cajuns in the double-elimination tournament. During the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league s nine coaches, the Warhawks were chosen to finish eighth. HOME RUN WATCH LIST Louisiana-Lafayette was picked to finish first, after receiving eight first place votes. Until we prove to our opponents that we can win on a regular basis, it isn t a surprise that we were picked eighth, head coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill said. We are going to use this preseason ranking as motivation throughout the season. This is a whole new year and we need to raise our level of play to gain more respect in the conference. Two Sign for Season The Warhawk softball team signed a pair of prospects for the 2011 season. Miyuki Navarrete and Stephanie Routzon signed on the dotted line at the end of November. Miyuki Navarrette San Jose, Calif. Navarrette, an infielder at Archbishop Mitty High School, is a first team all-league performer by ESPN Rise Magazine and the San Jose Mercury News. Navarette was also a member of the No. 1 ranked team in both the ESPN and USA Today polls after AMHS finished the 2009 season undefeated at Stephanie Routzon Wheat Ridge, Colo. Routzon, a pitcher for Wheat Ridge High School, earned Denver Post all-state honors in WRHS won the 2008 and 2009 Colorado 4A State Championships. She finished with a 0.62 ERA and 200 strikeouts during her junior season. No. Date Opp. Batter Dir. Inning ROB Count Note /03 Miss. The dean of the ULM coaching family, Holloway-Hill enters her 26th season as softball skipper with more victories than any head coach in any sport in Warhawks history. Entering the 2010 season, Holloway-Hill has led the Warhawks to 630 wins, three conference championships and two postseason appearances. Her 630 victories rank 31st among all NCAA active coaches. In the fall of 2009 she was honored at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after reaching her 700th career coaching victory. Holloway-Hill also coached ULM s only All- American Sarah Dawson. Last season the Warhawks upset Louisiana- Lafayette, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, during the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The longtime mentor of the ULM softball program, Holloway-Hill has constantly challenged her teams by playing some of the top talent in the nation. The 2007 season brought new challenges as the Warhawks played their first season in the highly competitive Sun Belt Conference. Despite finishing ninth in the league in its inaugural campaign, ULM once again finished with a winning record at home and tallied victories over the league s top three teams. In addition to producing talented and winning teams on the diamond, Holloway-Hill has stressed that her student athletes enjoy a balanced collegiate experience. Community service and academics have been fundamental values within the Warhawks softball program thanks to the emphasis Holloway-Hill has placed on them. Since becoming head coach, 15 players have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association All- America Scholar Athletes. ULM s 2005 squad and Holloway-Hill were recognized by the NFCA for having one of the top academic records in the nation. On a list of the top cumulative grade point averages for the academic season, Holloway-Hill s squad ranked 77th overall with a GPA, the highest in the Southland Conference and the second highest in the state of Louisiana. As good as ULM has been in the classroom under Holloway-Hill, they have been even better on the field. In addition to having the most wins in ULM history, her 238 victories from the program s days in the Southland Conference were the most by any school in that league. Holloway-Hill posted her 200th-career win against the SLC came in a 5-2 decision over McNeese State on April 21, Following the 2004 season, the NFCA recognized ULM s achievements on the softball field when its All- Time Top 50 poll was released. ULM was ranked No. 43 amongst the more than 250 Division I softball programs in the nation, the highest in the Southland Conference and the third highest amongst all the schools in the state of Louisiana. The top 50 ranking was compiled using weekly USA Today/NFCA polls from 1995 through Holloway-Hill came to what was then Northeast Louisiana University in 1984 as an assistant coach to Mary Jo Murray before becoming the program s fifth head coach the following season. She promptly guided the Warhawks to the Southland Conference Tournament championship - the university s first - in her first season as head coach in Her 1986 squad also claimed the tournament title. In 1992, ULM finished in second in the conference race but the team s record against a strong schedule - a trademark of a Holloway-Hill team - earned it the chance to compete in the National Invitational Championships in Macomb, Ill., a tournament for leading teams which did not make the NCAA playoffs. ULM won the tournament with a 6-1 record, defeating Ivy League champion Princeton in the finals, 3-0. Holloway-Hill s greatest team came five years later. The 1997 edition, led by All-American pitcher Sarah Dawson, won the Southland Conference championship, posted a record, was ranked No. 18 in the nation, and competed in the NCAA tournament before being defeated by eventual national runner-up UCLA. Following the 1997 season, Holloway-Hill garnered numerous coaching honors. She was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year by her peers in the coaching ranks, Louisiana Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, and South Region Coach of the Year by the NFCA.
