RHP Mike Recchia (3-0, 2.45) vs. LHP Luis Parra (4-1, 0.88) Series Information Today s Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) head back to Hickory a day after equaling a season-high with 17 strikeouts from three pitchers against the Crawdads (A, Rangers). The Intimidators batters struck out 16 times as the Crawdads rolled to an 8-2 win thanks to an 8- run first inning on Friday. Kannapolis sends Mike Recchia to the mound against for his third start of the season against left-hander Luis Parra, who has won four of his last five starts for the Crawdads. Hickory leads the season-series against Kannapolis, 5-3. Intimidating Starters: Mike Recchia, 24, makes his third start of the season and first relief appearances for Kannapolis. He has struck out 16 batters while walking two in 14.2 innings so far this season, including earning a win in his last start, a 5-inning outing in which he fanned six GreenJackets on July 1. Recchia faced the Crawdads in 2011 as a reliever with Charleston, earning a win after 3.0 relief innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. The Sox signed Recchia out of the independent Frontier League where he opened the season with Windy City. Last season he went 11-3 with a 2.51 ERA and a league-high 177 strikeouts in innings for the Thunderbolts. He spent part of the 2011 season in the SAL with Charleston RiverDogs (A, Yankees), going 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 22 relief appearances, including a scoreless relief outing against Rome. Recchia went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois and was signed by the Yankees in Hickory s Hurler: Luis Parra, 21, makes his 10th start and second against Kannapolis this season. He is coming off 8.0 scoreless innings in a win at Savannah on July 1. Parra has kept his ERA below 2.00 during his run in the South Atlantic League, not allowing more than two earned runs in any start this season. Since the All-Star Break, Parra is 2-0 with a 0.41 ERA (1 ER/22 IP). In his lone start against Kannapolis, he took no decision over 5.0 innings of work, allowing a run on six hits while striking out three in a game Hickory eventually won in 12 innings. The 6 2 southpaw spent the last two seasons with the AZL Rangers and the previous two seasons in the DSL. Entering this season, Parra boasted a career record of with a 3.66 ERA in 56 games (41 starts). Last season with the AZL Rangers, he went 5-6 with a 3.79 ERA (25 ER/59.1 IP) in 13 games (13 starts). Roster Moves: Kannapolis placed catcher Mike Marjama on the Disabled List today and have received pitcher Tony Bucciferro from Advanced Rookie Bristol. This move comes one day after catcher Jeremy Dowdy was promoted to Double-A Birmingham, and Kannapolis received catcher Angel Rosario from Bristol. Sweet Relief: Relief pitchers Cal Bowing and Adam Lopez each set career-highs in strikeouts on Friday in Hickory, combining to strikeout 15 batters over 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Lopez sat down nine batters via strikeout over 4.0 innings, and Bowling fanned six in his Class A debut in 3 1/3 innings of relief. The two combined with Euclides Leyer, who fanned two over twothirds of an innings, to equal a team season-high with 17 strikeouts against the Crawdads. Swing, Swing, Swing: Kannapolis batters struck out a season-high-tying 16 times on Friday against Hickory. The Intimidators also fanned 16 times July 3 against Augusta. Dealin to Double-Digits: Hickory starter C.J. Edwards struck out 10 batters, two shy of his career-high, against Kannapolis on Friday. It marks the fourth time an opposing pitcher has struck out at least 10 batters this season, the last coming July 3 when Augusta GreenJackets starter Kendry Flores fanned 11 Intimidators. Flores also struck out 10 Intimidators on June 20. Savannah s Luis Cessa struck out 10 batters June 1 in Kannapolis. Barnum s Bomb: Keon Barnum, the White Sox supplemental first round pick in the June 2012 draft, hit a go-ahead home run on Friday in the make-up of Thursday s suspended game a solo blast with one out in the eighth inning. It was the first home run of the season for the left-handed hitting first baseman, who hit home runs in three straight games last season with Advanced Rookie Bristol in his professional debut. Back-to-Back Jacks: Keon Barnum and Brent Tanner hit the first back-to-back home runs of the season for Kannapolis, coming with one out in the eighth inning Friday in the make up of Thursday s suspended game. The last time Kannapolis hit back-to-back home runs was July 11, 2012, when Grant Buckner and Kevan Smith launched consecutive home runs in a 3-2 loss at Lexington. Free Swingers: The Crawdads are the most strikeout-prone team in the SAL, fanning 891 times in 2,796 at-bats, or 31.9% of the time. Charleston has the second-most strikeouts in the league with 743.
