This is the first of two series between Savannah and Kannapolis this season. Kannapolis has dropped eight of its last 11 games to fall into a tie with Delmarva for last place in the Northern Division 2nd Half while the Sand Gnats are in sixth place, only a half-game ahead of last-place Greenville in the 2nd Half Southern Division standings. Savannah came out of the break 4-10 but is 9-7 since. Intimidating Starter: Jarrett Casey, 24, makes his second spot-start of the season. He gave up one run over 5.0 innings to earn a win in his only start this year on April 29 against Rome. Casey went 3-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 games (one start) in the 1st Half but has struggled in 10 games since the break, going 1-1 with a 7.96 ERA. In 20 career starts since 2010, Casey is 6-7 with a 4.34 ERA (46 ER/95.1 IP) with his longest outing coming Aug. 13, 2010, spinning 7.0 scoreless innings with Bristol against Burlington in the Appalachian League. Four Promotions in Five Days: Kannapolis promoted four players to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem over the last five days, sending outfielder Keenyn Walker and pitchers Kevin Vance, Erik Johnson and Scott Snodgress to the Dash. The White Sox selected Walker, Johnson and Snodgress with their supplemental first-, second-, and fifth-round picks in the June 2011 draft. All four players were experiencing a 2nd Half surge in success. Walker was batting.343 since the All-Star Break. Vance ranked seventh in the SAL in ERA at the time of his promotion and led the league with a 1.66 ERA since May 31. Johnson went 2-2 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts since joining the team at the end of May, and Snodgress maintained a 1.99 ERA since the start of the June and led Kannapolis in starts, innings and strikeouts. 11-run 3rd Inning: Kannapolis sent 16 batters to the plate in an 11-run third inning Sunday, only the second 10+ run inning by the Intimidators dating back to at least the 2005 season. In the big frame, Kannapolis recorded nine hits (eight singles), three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Every batter reached base safely in the inning, and eight of nine scored at least one run. The only other double-digit run inning by the Intimidators since 2005 occurred on June 6, 2009, when Kannapolis plated 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth in a 14-5 win over West Virginia. Dators, Dogs comeback: Kannapolis suffered it s largest come-from-ahead loss on Sunday against Charleston, watching a 6-run lead slip away in a loss to the RiverDogs. The Intimidators overcame a RiverDogs 5-0 lead early in the game as well. Kannapolis s largest come-from-ahead loss prior to Sunday was 4 runs twice, most recently July 12 at Lexington. One Run Wonders: The Intimidators loss to the RiverDogs at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Sunday was the first one-run loss by Kannapolis at home this season. Kannapolis is now in one-run games this season, including 11-1 at home. Road Woes: Kannapolis has struggled on the road over the last two months. Kannapolis went 1-7 on their last road trip and is 2-9 in away games in the month of July. After the Intimidators went on the road in April and May, the team is 5-16 since the start of June away from CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Last Time Out: The Intimidators scored 11 runs in the third inning, but the RiverDogs rallied for a win on Sunday. Each team overcame a deficit of at least five runs, and 17 of 18 batters crossed the plate at least once. With the game tied, 12-12, Charleston's Francisco Arcia doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth inning against Dustin Umberger (0-1), who suffered the loss. RiverDogs reliever Fred Lewis (5-2) worked 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four, for the win. Nick Goody spun a ninth for the save (3). Intimidators starter Myles Jaye walked the first three batters of the game, and Charleston's Casey Stevenson and Rob Refsnyder each added two-run singles for an early 4-0 lead. Kannapolis overcame an early 5-0 hole by exploding for 11 runs in the third inning, sending 16 batters to the plate for nine hits, three walks and an RBI-hit-by-pitch. Charleston chipped away with runs in the fourth and fifth before plating five runs in the seventh inning against the Intimidators bullpen to take a lead. Stevenson scored the first run of the frame on a Jeff Soptic wild pitch, and Cody Grice added an RBI-single to pull the RiverDogs within two. Cito Culver's two-run triple off Dustin Umberger tied the game, and Culver scored on a wild pitch to give the RiverDogs the lead, The Intimidators tied the game on Buckner's seventh inning single for his career-high fifth RBI of the game.
