1 72 Avenue Four Laning (BNSF Overpass to 120 Street) WELCOME Public Information Meeting

2 Project Goals About the Project The goal of this project is to address congestion along 72 Avenue and adjacent streets from the BNSF Overpass to 120 Street after completion of the Highway 91 interchange project. In order to achieve this, four travel lanes with dedicated turning lanes, a new traffic signal at Westview Drive and intersection improvements at 112 Street and 116 Street are proposed. Boulevard with offset sidewalk will enhance the pedestrian experience along 72 Avenue. The current plan generally meets the North Delta Area Plan of the Official Community Plan to improve traffic flow and create a safer pedestrian environment along 72 Avenue. Project Timeline Tentative design and construction schedule is as follows: Early 2018 Preliminary Roadway Design Late 2018 Detailed Roadway Design Summer 2019 Road Construction from BNSF Overpass to 115 Street Summer 2020 Road Construction from 115 Street to 120 Street (Scott Road)

3 Traffic Signal Modifications 72 Avenue at Westview Drive The current one way stop at Westview Drive will be replaced with a full traffic signal in the first phase of the works with four lanes along 72 Avenue. This will allow for safer turning movements from and to Westview Drive. With the signal removed on Highway 91, traffic shortcutting will be reduced as it will be more convenient to use 64 Avenue. This signal together with the signal at 72 Avenue will create gaps in the traffic to allow for access from Blake Drive and York Crescent and adjacent driveways, between Westview Drive and 112 Street. 72 Avenue at 112 Street The current traffic signal will be upgraded to allow for two southbound lanes from 112 Street. This will reduce morning queue lengths on 112 Street and should reduce the incidence of blocked driveways. North and south phases will be split to allow for northbound traffic from the townhouse development. 72 Avenue at Heath Elementary The current pedestrian signal is uncoordinated. Coordination with other signals along 72 Avenue will be introduced during peak traffic hours in the first phase of the project. 72 Avenue at 116 Street The current traffic signal will be upgraded in the second phase of the works to provide through and left turn lanes both southbound and northbound along 116 Street. Protective permissive phasing will cater for high turn volumes during the morning and afternoon peak hours on 116 Street and reduce the incidence of short-cutting through the neighbourhood and the likelihood of blocked intersections at 72A Avenue and 73A Avenue. 72 Avenue at Nicholson Road The signal will allow for four lanes of through traffic on 72 Avenue with dedicated turning lanes. 72 Avenue at 120 Street New protected-only left turn phasing will be introduced in all four directions to improve safety at this intersection in 2020 or earlier. The entire intersection will be rebuilt together with the City of Surrey. New lanes will not be added at this time.

4 Additional Information Alex Fraser Bridge Capacity Improvements Phase 1 Improvements start in the of Winter 2017 and are scheduled for completion in May 2018 which include: Removing the concrete centre barrier across the Alex Fraser Bridge and replacing it with a temporary barrier; New traffic signal installation at the Nordel Way northbound on-ramp intersection to relieve significant delays for traffic from Highway 17 and the weigh scale turning left to access the Bridge; Extending the two-lane portion of the Nordel Way northbound onramp leading to the Alex Fraser Bridge to provide additional capacity; Building a vertical wall under Nordel Way on Highway 91 to accommodate the future third southbound lane on Highway 91 between Nordel Way and the new 72 Avenue Interchange; and Installing a Snow and Ice Management System which involves installing cable collars like those found on the Port Mann Bridge. Alex Fraser Bridge Capacity Improvements Phase 2 Improvements project are scheduled for tender in February 2018 and completion in December 2018, which include: Drainage upgrades to the Alex Fraser Bridge; Bridge strengthening improvements; Sidewalk widening at both existing and new sign bridge locations; New paint markings on the Alex Fraser Bridge for the seventh lane; Installation of moveable barriers; and Construction of an additional southbound lane on Highway 91 between Nordel Way and the new 72 Avenue Interchange.

5 Additional Information Alex Fraser Bridge Capacity Improvements Phase 3 Improvements are scheduled for tender in March 2018 and completion in September 2018, which include: 13 new dynamic messaging signs at decision points throughout the Lower Mainland; 28 new Bluetooth detection installations; and 21 new traffic camera installations. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will be reducing the posted speed limit in the vicinity of the Alex Fraser Bridge from 90 km/h to 70 km/h due to shortened merge lanes created by the counter-flow lane configuration. The posted speed limit will be further reduced to 60 km/h when the moveable barrier is being relocated twice daily. Retrieved from: Island.aspx
