Caching utlk Encurage participatin, fun, and learning Encurage self discipline and high standards Be firm but fair Include everyne Be punctual Take an interest in individuals Keep everyne invlved and active 30

Grup management Grup players accrding t skill level Plan fr the the different needs and expectatins f players junirs, senirs, wmen and nvice Be aware f the age and develpment differences: a strng bisterus 17 year ld can be quite daunting t a quiet 14 year ld less skilled players can be disheartened by mre skilled players Keep paddlers fcused and active 31

Grup management Keep paddlers tgether and within cntrl Crrect inapprpriate play, activity, r language when it ccurs t set yur expectatins at the utset Set bundaries t the training area D nt let paddlers wander If a large grup, appint an assistant cach 32

Teaching sprting skills learning Understanding the three stages f learning mtives gd practise: 1. Early stage learning a new skill; actins must be thught thrugh and carefully mnitred. There tends t be many errrs and mvement is ften clumsy. 2. Intermediate stage a basic cmmand f the skill; allwing better cntrl and crdinatin but still requiring a cnscius effrt. 3. Final stage the new skill is happening autmatically and uncnsciusly. If pr technique is tlerated in the early stage, it becmes the technique used in the final phase. 33

Teaching sprting skills DEDICT Use DEDICT fr teaching paddling strkes Demnstrate clear demnstratin with minimal cmment Explain name, what, why, when, where Demnstrate clear demnstratin, this time with teaching pints keep it simple Imitate make sure peple imitate (nt d what they think is right) Crrect crrect errrs with what t d, NOT what they are ding wrng Training put the skill int an activity t test it 34

Mdule CP106 The Training Sessin 36

Planning Failing t plan, is planning t fail Why is a training prgram needed? What des the cach/player want t achieve? Need t set gals: where am I nw? where d I want t be? what d I need t d get there? What shape will the prgram take? What ther cnsideratins affect planning? 37

Cnsider Wh are yu caching? Males vs females, junirs vs senirs, beginners vs experienced Wh is cming? Hw many peple? What is the time cmmitment? Why d they play? What mtivates them? Is it general fitness, scial r perfrmance? 38

Cnsider Is there a cmpetitin r champinship? Is it club, interclub, scial? What facilities are available? Access, playing area, change rms Bats, paddles, gear, gals Indr/utdr pl, river, lake 39

Prgram The prgram must identify: length f prgram the phases f the prgram the detail f the prgram The training plan must identify: Example sessin aims specific drills, exercises, and time allcatin review and evaluatin A nvice team wishes t advance t the next grade but t d s must win the seasn grand final. The seasn is fur mnths lng. T win the grand final players imprve individual skills such as frward paddling, turning and rlling. The team must imprve its zne defence skills. Aerbic fitness must be imprved if players are t play well in the games required t reach the grand final. 40

Mdule CP108 Injury Preventin 50

51

Injury preventin By prmting awareness and gd habits, the cach educates players in injury preventin Injury preventin is cnsidered in the fllwing areas: health and fitness rules f play equipment technique training 52

Injury preventin Health and fitness A healthy and fit bdy is the first step t enjying sprt The cach shuld be aware f: the fitness levels f each player the existence and influence f existing injuries any special needs nutritin and sleep requirements disabilities and health issues hydratin, hypthermia, sun stress 53

Injury preventin Rules f play The rules f cane pl have been develped t minimise the risk f injury during play Players must knw the rules The rules shuld be enfrced at training sessins Equipment Scrutineer bats, paddles, and gear Gal frames n prtrusins r sharp edges, firmly anchred Bundary rpes and markers suitable and safe 54

Injury preventin Technique Training Gd paddling and ball handling technique is essential fr building strng skills, but are critical fr reducing the chance f injury Warm up and stretching Sessins prepared t suit skill level f the players Be aware f the different skills levels in a sessin and hw they impact the players Cl dwn 55

Mdule CP109 Technique Fundamentals 56

Technique fundamentals Fit in bat Hips Legs Feet Psture Upright, relaxed Chin up Maximise distance between sternum and naval Bdy rtatin Face where yu want t g Paddle parallel with shulders Engage the large blique muscles fr paddling and thrwing 57

Technique fundamentals T reduce shulder dislcatin: avid mving the arm t a psitin that places the shulder in an awkward psitin keep arms bent t absrb shck and reduce frces transmitted t the shulder elbws shuld nt extend pass the line f the back avid hyperextensin f arms T reduce risk f rtatr cuff injuries: keep elbws clse t the bdy strengthen rtatr cuff muscles by ding external rtatin exercises with Thera band r light weights 58

Mdule CP110 Basic Strkes 2

Basic strkes Frward paddling Reverse paddling Frward sweep Reverse sweep Draw 3

Basic paddling skills Basic paddling skills are ften verlked as players cncentrate n ball skills and team tactics. But paddling skills are critical t success Players must get the maximum pwer ut f every strke Teach the strkes n a flat hull then add knee lifts, edging and kayak cntrl D lts f wrk n bat cntrl and edges befre mving nt linking stkes tgether and mre advanced techniques 4

Reference pints Reference pints allw cnsistent identificatin and assessment f imprtant aspects f technique Identify three reference pints fr the technique yu are bserving and use them cnsistently between players Example: frward paddling 1. Gd bdy rtatin t place the paddle 2. Paddle is full depth 3. Paddle exits at the hip

Frward paddling There are fur parts t the frward strke: 1. Catch Sit up straight but relaxed Rtate frward twards the ft, plant the blade in the water s that it frms an angle f ~80 with the side f the kayak. The lwer arm is fully extended. The catch shuld be as far frward as pssible, and as vertical as practical. T encurage bdy rtatin, keep the paddle shaft parallel with the shulders. The tp arm drives the paddle dwn int the water. 6

Frward paddling 2. Pwer Push n the ftrest n the side f the strke Pull the blade twards the hip with the pwer cming frm the bdy rtating back. The arm is straight fr the first part f the strke, the elbw bending tward the end f the strke. 3. Exit Lift the blade sideways and ut f the water as it reaches the hip Recvery arm shuld travel n a plane level with the shulder 4. Recvery The bdy is prepared fr the next strke 7

Catch 8

Exit and recvery 9

Frward sweep The frward sweep turns the bat frm the bw. Key pints Wrking arm straight Arc shuld be as wide as pssible Paddle is kept lw in a hrizntal plane Gd bdy rtatin t assist bdy rtatin, encurage paddlers t lk at the paddle as it sweeps thrugh the water. This must be untaught nce bdy rtatin is mastered. Recvery arm is kept wide f the bdy, watch fr the recvery arm being held clse int the waist. 10

Reverse sweep The reverse sweep turns the bat frm the stern. Key pints Use the back f the blade Wrking arm straight Arc as wide as pssible Paddle is kept lw in a hrizntal plane Gd bdy rtatin t assist bdy rtatin, encurage paddlers t lk at the paddle as it sweeps thrugh the water. This must be untaught nce bdy rtatin is mastered. Watch fr the cmmn fault f the recvery arm cming t clse t the bdy and cramping the strke. 11

Reverse sweep set up 12

Draw The draw strke mves the kayak sideways Key pints Full bdy rtatin t face the directin f travel The lwer arm is extended but nt rigid The tp arm is statinary and acts as a pivt. It frames the face, with the frearm in frnt f the frehead. Mve the kayak t the paddle Feather the blade as it cmes t the side f the kayak t start a new strke.

Draw 14

Linking strkes Once a player has all the basic strkes mastered, it is time t link them tgether. By linking strkes, a player can get the maximum effectiveness ut f every strke they d in a game situatin. Every strke must be efficient in terms f pwer and turning effect. 15

Mdule CP111 Kayak Rll 2

Rlling Rlling is a crucial skill Withut a cnfident rlling technique players are hesitant t cmmit t the play and t the ball Teach it sn Teach it in a swimming pl

Types f kayak rll Hand rlls Back deck Frnt deck Upright Rlling with the ball Paddle rlls C t C Sweep rll We will cver the back deck rll and the frnt deck hand rlls

Rlling technique Bth the back deck and frnt deck rlls are cmmn in cane pl. Players that als paddle white water prefer the frnt deck rll because it prtects the face when rlling n rivers. (The back deck rll expses the face, which can be injured if striking rcks r the river bed.) Bth rlls wrk by creating a lw centre f gravity fr the turning frces t vercme Learn bth rlls!

Back deck rll The easiest rll t learn It wrks by keeping the bdy flat n the back deck t create a lw the centre f gravity fr turning frces must vercme Teach it in a pl, standing beside the trainee fr immediate supprt if needed Be patient, take it slwly and explain what is required Be aware that many peple are reluctant t g under water (at first!)

Back deck hand rll 1 Setup lean back and reach t the surface with bth hands

Back deck hand rll 2 Drive the thigh dwn int the thigh brace t turn the bat n the water (the thigh n the ppsite side t the hands reaching t the surface) Bth hands sweep dwn thrugh the water (but fcus is n the thighs, nt the hands)

Back deck hand rll 3 The head stays n the back deck thrughut the rll

Back deck hand rll 4 Finish by sitting upright

Frnt deck rll Strnger and mre pwerful than the back deck rll It wrks by keeping the bdy frward against the frnt deck t create a lw the centre f gravity Teach it in a pl, standing beside the trainee fr immediate supprt if needed Be patient, take it slwly and explain what is required Be aware that many peple are reluctant t g under water (at first!)

Frnt deck hand rll 1 Setup lean frward and reach t the surface with bth hands

Frnt deck hand rll 2 Drive the thigh dwn int the thigh brace t turn the bat n the water (the thigh n the ppsite side t the hands reaching t the surface) Bth hands sweep dwn thrugh the water (but fcus is n the thighs, nt the hands) The head cmes ut f the water last

Frnt deck hand rll 3 The head stays dwn and frward thrughut the rll

Frnt deck hand rll 4 Finish by sitting upright

Hand rlling dn ts D nt attempt t push ff the water with the hands. This takes the fcus ff the thigh actin needed t rll the bat. D nt reach ut away frm the bat t gain leverage. This makes the rll mre difficult because it mves the bdy s centre f gravity away frm the bat t increase the dwnward frces that must be vercme. D nt slap n the water. This is a waste f energy and des nt assist the rle

Mdule CP112 Kayak Cntrl 2

Kayak cntrl Kayak cntrl must becme an autmatic skill Players use the size and shape f the kayak t utmaneuvre an ppnent, t win r t prtect the ball

Kayak cntrl Six aspects f kayak cntrl: flat turn edging nse and tail cntrl gaining and maintaining pssessin turning n the ball turning int the tackle 4

Flat turn Turning the kayak turn the kayak with a flat turn r a stern turn stern turns are an advanced skill and best avided until paddlers have mastered the flat turn The flat turn is the mst cmmn turn in cane pl it is easy and quick in mst cases, it is best fr maintaining kayak psitin n an ppnent 5

Flat turn Key pints Bat mving frward Sweep strke t start the turn Immediately fllwed by bw draw t maintain mmentum and cntinue the turn Link seamlessly t a frward strke t take the bat ut f the turn and frward Keep kayak flat r at a slight learn t the side f the sweep strke 6

Flat turn 7

Edging Edging refers t the bat sitting n its side Typically the kayak is edged in cmbinatin with paddling strkes t vary turns r t dive the nse r tail under anther bat. Edging is als effective fr stpping attacking players and fr prtecting the ball frm an ppnent. Edging the kayak t the left r right changes the water line n the deck and makes it difficult fr an ppnent t get underneath 8

Nse and tail cntrl Nse cntrl Nse cntrl refers t the actin f lifting the nse ver, r pushing it under, an ppnent. The ideal tackle is t get the kayak beneath an ppnent. Because with the ppnent sitting n tp f the attacker, they can be easily pushed t wherever the attacker wants them. T get beneath anther kayak, the nse is dipped using frward strkes r frward sweeps. With frward strkes Used when appraching anther kayak at With a pwerful frward strke, and bth feet pushing n the ft pegs, lean frward t push the nse under the water and beneath an ppnent. 9

Nse and tail cntrl With sweep strkes Used when appraching at an angle T get nse under lift the utside knee and thrw yur weight frward t bunce the nse under water. Use a pwer sweep t turn the kayak twards the ppnent. T get nse ver lift the inside knee and use frward sweep t lift nse ver the ther kayak. Tail cntrl Tail cntrl similar t nse cntrl can be simply a matter f edging yur kayak t get under yur ppsitin, r it can invlve deliberately dipping yur tail. Either way the principles are the same as fr nse cntrl. 10

Lwer the nearside edge t tackle frm behind 11

Gaining pssessin with the bat Always get yur kayak between yur ppnent s kayak and the ball Try t get under yur ppnent t get the cntrl psitin Keep paddling until the ball is adjacent t yur knees. Then either turn int the tackle t maintain directin r turn n the ball t gain field psitin and time. 12

Get yur bat between the ppnent and the ball 13

Get yur bat between the ppnent and the ball 14

Psitin the kayak between the ppnent and the ball, and keep paddling 15

Turning n the ball One f the best skills t have is the ability t turn n the ball. By leaving the ball n the water and using turning strkes, flat turns and supprt strkes, yu can maintain pssessin indefinitely. Using a flat turn and lw supprt strkes, keep the kayak between yur ppnent and the ball at all times. Always lk at the ball, nt at the ppnent r their kayak. Keep the ball arund knee level s there is little chance fr an ppnent t steal it. Use the paddle t keep the ball within arms reach. 16

Get yur bat between yur ppnent and the ball and turn n the ball t maintain field psitin r free up fr next pass 17

Turn n the ball 18

Get yur bat between the ppnent and the ball 19

Tackling frm behind t get ball 20

Bracing thrugh a tackle 21

Turning int tackle At times, it may be better t turn int a tackle and get under the ppnent. Fr example, when yu want t remain gal side f an ppnent, r near a bundary line. When tackled n a fast break, it is smetimes pssible t hld directin (and even dribble) twards gal, as the ppnent pushes yu in the directin yu wish t g. 22

Turning int tackle Key Pints Use yu edges t get under yur ppnent Brace and pwer sweep thrugh the initial tackle n the far side frm yur ppnent t maintain yur psitin and directin. Keep the ball next t yur knees and in arms reach s yu can get a pass r sht away 23

Get yur bat between yur ppnent and the ball and maintain directin t the gal and sht 24

Turn yur back n ppnents t avid hand tackles 25

Use yur knees t edge the kayak 26

Lift the nearside edge t keep yur kayak between the ppnent and the ball 27

Mdule CP113 Ball Skills 2

Ball skills Picking up the ball Passing Catching Shting Dribbling 3

Picking up the ball Picking up the ball 1 Place an extended hand n the ball and lightly push it int the water. 2 Mve the hand dwn and arund the side f the ball while the water pushes it int the hand. 3 As the hand mves beneath the ball lift it frm the water. 4

Baseball pass Key pints sit upright bdy rtatin elbw at r just abve shulder level wrist flick is last thing t ccur pint fingers at target fllw thrugh Arm and bdy rtatin give pwer Wrist and fingers give directin and deceptin Shrt wind up is mre deceptive 5

Dribbling Place the ball abut a metre in frnt f the bat and t ne side Apprach the ball and psitin t pick it up when it is level with the knees (nt the hip) Time the pick up s that the last paddle strke is n the ppsite side t the ball Hld the paddle lw acrss the deck t avid bstructing the ball when it is thrwn Pick up the ball, thrw it frward and fllw by picking up the paddle with the same hand, ready t paddle frward 30

Mdule CP114 Paddle Skills 2

Basic paddle skills Blcking Gal keeping 3

Paddle blcking The paddle becmes a natural extensin f the hands Always use hands when the ball is within arms reach When blcking, watch the ball and use either face f the blade whichever is cmfrtable Slide the bttm hand dwn t the neck f the blade and then slide the tp hand t where it is needed When blcking mve the paddle vertically nt hrizntally, as then there is less chance f being penalised 4

Paddle blcking Paddle juggling bth n and ff the water is a great way t get cmfrtable with the paddle and ball Blcking is a last actin it is mre effective t cntinue a bat tackle rather than sit and wave the paddle arund attempting t blck the ball 5

Keep paddle ut f arms reach 6

Mdule CP115 Defence 2

Defence Defence is a crucial part f cane pl. If the ppsitin can t scre it is easier t beat them Gd defence can be the best frm f attack especially if it is cnstantly changing t maintain pressure n the ppsitin 3

Defence The fllwing tpics will be cvered: Principles f defence Types f defence 4

The principles f defence 5 Bs f gd D 1. Bat psitin The kayak is between the attacker and the gal 2. Bdy psitin The defender s bdy is clser t the gal, r behind the bdy f the attacker 3. Ball psitin Knw where the ball is and whether it is a threat 4. Bundaries At all times try t turn r channel the ball carrier r shter tward the bundaries 5. Banter The secret t gd defence is gd cmmunicatin Give clear and cncise directins three times if pssible Listen t the calls and trust team mates directins 5

Ball psitin knw where the ball is 6

Turn the bat and blck the ball 7

Types f defence Types f defence: Press Zne defence Teach press first it frces players t learn the principles f bat psitin and hw t use their kayaks 8

Features f press Press Each player marks an ppnent There is n set galkeeper Players must ensure they d nt lse their ppnent and that maximum pressure is maintained t frce a turnver Individual skills Excellent ne-n-ne skills are essential Players will nly learn t play gd defence by giving them the basics and letting them learn frm their mistakes, and the mst mistakes will happen during ne-n-ne drills Always give yur players enugh f these drills, they are crucial t their develpment 9

Press key pints Cncentrate equally n the player and the ball. Yu must knw at the same time as yur ppnent when a pass is cming t anticipate r create a turnver. Players must knw where the ball is s that a quick change f pssessin leads t a fast break Be aware f ther players arund yu in case they need help r vice versa Dn t bstruct Maintaining bat psitin is mst imprtant Channel yur ppnent t the side line r gal line t reduce their ptins 10

Press bat psitining Stay between yur ppnent and the gal. Be aware f yur psitin n the field in case yur ppnent can catch and sht Stay clse enugh t yur ppnent t cpy every mve they make, but nt s clse yu can t avid screens r lse sight f the ball r ther players Stay clse enugh t be able t tackle befre they can get a pass away, but nt s clse that they can paddle away frm yu. This distance is different fr each player and must be assessed depending n the ppnents speed/fitness and yur wn speed/fitness. 11

Press 12

Zne defence Zne defence refers t the psitining f players t prtect an area, r zne, arund the gal There are many different zne frmatins but the bjective f each is the same: T frce shts t be lw percentage shts by keeping ffence ut f the zne and away frm the gal 13

Zne defence frmatins Typical zne frmatins include: Zne defence may be static r dynamic We will cver and 2 2 1, static 14

Zne defence static Players frm a zne and tenaciusly hld their individual psitins Hld psitin between the ppnent and the gal and turn the attacker. This is especially imprtant against ppnents wh are mre skilful r mre pwerful. Attacking players can be passed ff t a teammate 15

1-3-1 zne defence 1 a chaser that either sits n the pint and cvers the passing lanes t players inside the zne; r attempts t put pressure n the ball carrier t frce a pr pass 3 three players set ut acrss the frnt f gal with the nse f the kayak n the 6m line. The centre player is the key defender and cntrls either side and the pint. 1 the gal keeper 16

2-2-1 zne defence

Key pints f zne defence 1 Meet the attacker with paddle in the water, using pwer sweep and brace fr mmentum and cntrl D nt paddle ut t attacker at speed it makes it easier fr them t pass yu Tackle ppnents at the ftrest and turn them t the sideline 22

Key pints f zne defence 2 Never chase the last player up the field, even if they have the ball, as it creates an verlap fr the ppsitin Always try t push ut in defence as high as yu can frm the gal t frce the attacking team further away frm gal. This als gives defence mre rm t mve and places pressure n the ball Always knw where the ball is, where team mates are, and where ppnents are. Avid tunnel visin n ne ppnent. 23

Key pints f zne defence 3 Keep kayak at 45 degree angle t gal line either left r right f centre depending n which side f zne yu are n Never meet an attacker driving in end n, always at an angle Keep yur bdy just behind that f the attackers 24

Key pints f zne defence 4 Directins t leave a player r stay with a player always cme frm the back f the zne. Stay with a player until tld nt t by a team mate behind yu r until the attacker is facing the sideline If in dubt hld psitin and make the attacker cme t yu. 191 Shift ffence acrss the centreline r t the baseline 36

Shift defence acrss the centre line 37

Key pints f ffence 1 Get players thinking abut ffence frm the first sessin. Sme simple rules apply t all ffensive situatins: Every player must always threaten the gal if they dn t, defence will nt need t mark them Create a high percentage sht preferably 1 n 1 with the gal keeper in the centre crridr in frnt f gal Attacking mves are mst successful if dne at speed 38

Key pints f ffence 2 Dn t drive at the centre f the gal it just cmpacts the middle f the zne use the angles When attacking a zne, mve the defender acrss the centre line f the field r twards the base line t pen up the high percentage shting crridr 39

Key pints f ffence 3 Always knw where the ball is wh has it, where it is n the field Always knw where yur wn players are n the field, and where all yur ppnents are Always have smene ready t defend (cver) if the ball is turned ver Offence, like defence relies n gd cmmunicatin between team mates t give each ther specific directins s everyne is wrking tgether Ideally, unless yu are the inside shter, face the same way as the defender s yu can cver if there is a turnver 40
