Education Officer 1st Lt Stanley Gucwa, P sgucwa@gmail.com Secretary Lt/C Diane Patterson Treasurer Lt/C Carla Booth, P chb47@yahoo.com Commander Dave DuBarr, P I would like to thank the following members for renewing their membership in August: Maura and Richard McCabe, Corryn, Diane, and Marc Patterson, and Vincent Spadafino. Without your continued support, LBPS wouldn t be as successful as we are. It s the time of year where we get back to our normal meeting routine. Our next Bridge/Executive Committee meeting will be on Tuesday, September 4, at 6:30 p.m., at the Murrells Inlet Community Center, located at 4450 Murrells Inlet Rd., Murrells Inlet. All members are invited to attend. On Tuesday, September 11, at 6:30, at T-Bonz Gill & Grill on Seaboard St., we will have our monthly Business/Dinner meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone! The next boating activity will be Kayaking and lunch at the Bonfire Restaurant in Conway on Saturday, September 22. If you don t want to kayak, come out and join us for lunch! Please contact Rhonda Hardee, our Boating Activities Chairperson, to sign-up or for more information. Have you noticed an increase in the number of Facebook posts lately? I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their pictures from many of our recent activities. It s nice to see everyone having such a good time. A special thank you goes out to Stan Gucwa who is doing an excellent job of keeping up with the posts. Don t forget, you can also tweet us on
2 A planning committee has been formed for the 2019 D/26 Spring Conference that we will be hosting on March 8-10, 2019, at the Crown Reef Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach. Thank you to Rhonda Hardee and Trish Root for volunteering to organize and oversee the process, and Debbie VanNostrand for her valuable input. An example of some of the committees we will need volunteers for are: Finance, Public Relations, Hospitality Room, Silent Auction, Meals (Friday and Saturday), and Entertainment. If you haven t already signed up for a committee and would like to volunteer, please contact Rhonda or Trish. This is an excellent way to earn your Merit Mark for 2019 but, more importantly, is a perfect time to get to know your fellow USPS members from around the district. We are quickly approaching the end of another watch year which means its time for Merit Mark submissions. your time spent and type of activity for ANY Long Bay Power Squadron function to me to insure you get credit towards your Merit Mark. Times should also include time spent preparing for a squadron activity. All it takes is 10 hours to earn your Merit Mark! The deadline for Merit Mark submissions for 2018 is September 15. PLEASE contact me if you have any questions pertaining to Merit Marks. Just a reminder that we continue to look for fresh ideas and new talent. Do you enjoy computer work? Maybe you d like to be our web master. How about taking pictures? You can serve as a photographer on one of our cruises or at a public function. Do you like to write? Why not share a boating experience by writing an article for the Fore n Aft. How about making sure your charts are accurate by participating in the Co-Op Charting Program? These are just a few ways to get involved without being on the Executive Committee (Bridge). Always remember, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. LBPS is successful and moving forward because of its dedicated and enthusiastic members. If you have any questions, concerns, or recommendations, I can be reached at: (H) or (C) or at davedubarr@hotmail.com. Thank you everyone for all you are doing! As your Long Bay Sunshine Lady, I would like to send a bit of sunshine to anyone in our Squadron who could use some cheering up. In order for me to do this I need your help. Please let me know if you hear of someone in need. Mary Lou Gienopie, mlgienopie@yahoo.com 2

Single kayaks are $20 and there is also tandem kayaks ($30) available so that the children may enjoy the event. We will become one with nature and the river. There is nothing like sitting on the river, listening to the sound of the birds and wildlife, hearing the ripple of the water and just enjoying the peace and quiet. Afterwards, we will meet up at the Bon-Fire Restaurant that overlooks the Waccamaw River and enjoy a cold beverage and lunch together. RSVP by September 10 to Rhonda Hardee This is a great event for the whole family. Bring your friends, family, and neighbors. 5
6 Saturday, September 25, 2018 Cox Ferry Raft-up Have you ever seen one of the most beautiful rivers documented? For those of you who joined us for the raft up, you have seen the beautiful Waccamaw River. What an experience coming up the river from the ICW. Several of our members ventured up the river without chartplotter! We had multiple members that were able to experience their first raft-up. Ask them about the ferry that delivered cookies. What a wonderful time we had. We rafted 7 boats and 20 people together to enjoy a full day of swimming, floating, eating, socializing and playing bumper boats. What a great day of just relaxing after a busy summer. Poker Run Everyone knows how much fun we had during this event. Not only was this an event for the fun of it, it was also a fundraiser for the squadron. In order for us to continue to provide free Vessel Safety Checks and free ABC classes, we have to have fundraisers to support our financial part of these public services. This incredible day made a net profit of $ ! Talk about having your cake and eating it too. Thank you for everyone who participated in making this day extraordinary. 6
7 D26 Spring Conference March 8-10, 2019 I know it seems like a long way away, but we are hosting the District 26 Spring Conference in the beginning of the year. I am looking for volunteers to assist with the Conference. You don t have to be a social butterfly or a front-line person. We need volunteers for behind the scenes also. I am looking for people that can help gather items for goody bags, fill the bags, solicit items for the silent auction, help create the centerpieces or signs, assist with registration, set up or work with the Hospitality Suite, photographer, prepare name tags, or maybe you just have some friends that can assist in donating their services for printing, refreshments, and paper goods. We need assistance in setup and the cleanup. There are numerous jobs that you could be part of. I have seen how well we all work together and it makes the event a very successful and fun-filled time. Please contact me at to let me know what you would like to assist with. If you would love to help but don t know where you can assist, contact me and we can discuss where there is help needed. Thank you in advance for your help. Long Bay is making their mark this year. Let s show them at conference how great our group is! Not only are we a non-profit organization that assists the public; but we are a phenomenal array of people when we gather together. From the Nominating Committee: In accordance with the By Laws of Long Bay Power Squadron, the Slate of Officers for must be published, presented at the September meeting, voted on at the October meeting and installed into office at the Change of Watch in November. 8 BOATING SAFETY = SAFE BOATING From Executive Officer Gary Laser Why do we teach the ABC course? Our goal is and always will be "safety on the water." My friend, Captain Nicholls is a tow boat captain, and he has some stories that make you wonder, "What were they thinking?" On a clear day on Lake Michigan, a couple and their friends backed down an anchor line in five (5) feet of water to go swimming and sunbathing with their family. The wind came up and the waves started to build. They didn't notice that the anchor was dragging. When they finally noticed the boat was hard aground. Tow Boat US was called and pulled them off of the shore, and everyone was safe. What occurred was not uncommon in the boating world; however, here is what should have happened: 1. Always watch for the changes in weather. 2. Always have proper anchor chain affixed to scope. 3. Know your proper setting of anchor: 7:1 on calm seas and 10:1 on stormy seas. This occurrence is just one of the reasons why we teach the ABC classes. If you have any friends that need skill updates, please encourage them to enroll in our next ABC class. Happy and Safe Boating! Gary Laser Executive Officer Long Bay Power Squadron 8
