3 Don t Forget to Renew your AVA Memberships You may join/renew your AVA membership for 2016 Now. You can join through your club (recommended) or you can join online. You probably know that vaulters need to be AVA members to compete in AVA recognized events, but what about non-competing adults? Why should parents join? There are benefits such as access to the members-only parts of the AVA website and participation in AVA clinics and meetings. The other important reason to join is to keep the influcence of our Region II strong. Do you want to see more AVA events in our Region? Do you want more AVA officers/directors from our Region? Your participation in the process, your votes make this possible. Also, if you are part of a vaulting group which is NOT an AVA member club, please encourage your club to join. Even if you join as an affiliate group, it adds to the power of our region! Our numbers make us strong. AVA Annual Conference: Tuscon, Arizona, March 3-6 Join a few hundred of your closest vaulting friends for the AVA Annual Conference to be held at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, AZ, March 3 6, It will be a great weekend of extensive coach/lunger/vaulter/vaulting parent educational sessions and clinics. 8 North Valley Autumn Fest Megan Grove The stage for Phoenix Vaulting Club s very first competition on October 24 was set on the beautiful grounds of Camelot Equestrian Park with buttes and cross country jumps scattered in the background. A circle of straw hay bales dotted with pumpkins and flowers along with a castle turret for the judge and a dragon guarding the entrance to the grounds was the magical setting for Gold Country Vaulters and Phoenix Vaulting Club members as they competed at the North Valley Autumn Fest. The competition was a small unrecognized fest and had a great schooling show atmosphere for everyone from 4 yr old tiny tots to the adult vaulters. One and all had fun as they showed off their vaulting skills to an appreciative audience of family and friends. Some of the highlights included a fantastic trot pas de deux performed by Gold Country Vaulters Serena Connelly and Amelia Heilman. The Phoenix Pirates: Kristin Grove, Maite Testerman, and Ruby Testerman swash buckled their way through a fun Tag Team Freestyle where each vaulter performed for 30 seconds and showed off some fancy transitions as vaulters switched on and off the barrel. My personal favorite was the Musical Mix Up class at the end of the day where each vaulter demonstrated their creative chops adlibbing to an unknown Halloween-themed classic. Congratulations to every Gold Country and Phoenix Vaulting Club vaulter! Thank you to the AVA for our grant to host a competition. The extra funding made this competition possible. A special thanks to Russ Hobby for all of your help with learning about and setting up Comp Web. Your help was invaluable! We had a great time and are looking forward to a bigger and even better competition at Camelot Equestrian Park in 2016! 11 @ Jane Garrod Memorial Scholarship Colette Garrison The Jane Garrod Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a high school graduating senior who is an AVA member in good standing. Funds have been collected in a variety of ways: Circle of Friends members annual dues, donations, several fund raisers throughout the years including wine and cheese tasting, raffles, auctions, clinics, etc. The $500 scholarship is not based on need but rather vaulting participation, scholastic achievement, community service and personal recommendations. This year only two applications were submitted, so competition was light! The 2015 Jane Garrod Memorial Scholarship was awarded to: Mikaela Maldonado of Shea-Rose in Waxhaw, North Carolina. She is 18 years old and was taking college level classes while still in High School, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is now enrolled at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado Mikaela won the Copper level Championship at Shea-Rose Southern Sunshine Fest. The Circle of Friends held a successfull silent auction at Mt. Eden s Halloween Fest. Items ranged from vintage tees and posters to books and jewelry. We plan to repeat the event at 2016 Garrod s Spring Classic and other future fests so be on the look out for the ladies in the striped aprons and bid on a treasure. Applications for the 2016 scholarship will be available to graduating H S seniors in January or Febuary of 2016 and may be requested by from colettegarrison@comcast.net or by calling Jane Garrod The winner will be announced at ELLA PERSSELIN BENEFIT Christina Cagliostro Thanks to the many generous supporters the basic cost for a therapy table for the Colorado Children¹s Hospital in Denver was raised during the Mt. Eden¹s Halloween Fest. The therapy table, called Ella¹s Table is going to be a gift to the Children s Hospital to show gratitude for the excellent care vaulter Ella Persselin received this summer and fall. Ella was in a very serious accident during Nationals and was hospitalized for 100 days. The family is so very thankful for all the letters and cards of support, and very pleased that the vaulting community is getting together to purchase this table for the occupational therapy department in honor of Ella. There is a gofundme site at and donations are welcome. All donations will be given to the Children¹s Hospital Pediatric Occupational Therapy Department.
