2 Equine Herpes Outbreak Update Linda Bibbler There have been many inquiries regarding the recent outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1). We are all following this closely. Current information is available on the USEF website ( There is a button on the upper right hand corner that links to comprehensive and udated information. Many horse events in Western States have been cancelled; however, many events are being held. In California, most horse shows, including the recent Woodside Vaulters Spring Fest and the upcoming CVI*,** Saratoga and Region II Championships, are following the Recommendations for Horse Show/Event Managers Regarding EHV-1 Biosecurity Procedures outlined on the California Department of Food and Agriculture website ( ahfss/animal_health/equine_herpes_virus.html). It is too early to say whether or not there will be any impact on the AVA Nationals. So far the news is good and the spread of the virus seems to be fairly well contained. For Colorado information visit: gov/cs/satellite/agriculture-main/cdag/ or phone: It is recommended all competition managers, horse owners and interested participants check the USEF website and/or the various state sites regularly for updated information. International Judges and Trainers Course Emma Seely Two of the most distinguished international vaulting judges, Mr. Jochen Schilffarth (FEI O) of Germany and our own Ms. Suzanne Detol (FEI O) are offering a special Judges and Trainers Course on Thursday, June 23, 2011 (1:30 pm - 8 pm) at The Inn at Saratoga, Fourth Street, Saratoga, CA Topics will be Compulsories, Technical Test Exercises and the Composition of the Technical Test and Freestyle. This event is open to all vaulting judges and trainers. The cost is $35 per person. Contact Emma Seely at emmaseely17@gmail.com no later than June 20 to make your reservation. Don t miss this unique opportunity! CVI Canada Possible in 2012 Barb Schmidt, EVABC CVI Committee The Equestrian Vaulting Association of BC (Canada) has formed a CVI committee to determine if there is sufficient interest for BC to host a CVI in 2012 (within the qualifying period for next year s world championships). The event would offer both 1* and 2* classes. At this time we are only trying to determine interest - this is not a commitment. Without a major sponsor we must be careful that we don t loose money. Our goal for 2012 is to match the 40 competitors we had in If would help us greatly if any interested club would send me an (charleyhorseranch@yahoo.com ) indicating how many vaulters in your club might be interested in participating. Thank you. Sponsorships Still Available for Nationals Peggy van Hook We still have many sponsorship opportunities for Nationals classes available. They range from $25.00 SuperFans to the Women Gold for $250. Help the AVA by being a sponsor. To those of you who have already sponsored thank you very much. Region II already has the highest $ amount but not by much.. Lets show how supportive Region II can be!!! To sponsor a class visit: vaulting.org/cgi-bin/nationals_donations.pl There are also advertising opportunities at Nationals and in the Nationals program. Visit And don t forget the new Individual Sponsorship Program to help vaulters raise money for their own Nationals costs at June PAGE 2

6 Polo In the Park Benefits Special Needs Children Sarah Meaken The James S. Brady Therapeutic Riding Program for children with special needs is the main beneficiary of Horses in California, Inc., a non-profit organization. The Brady Program helps disabled and disadvantaged youths in the San Francisco Bay Area by offering horseman ship and horseback riding lessons as a physical or social therapy alternative. Under the direction of personnel who have been certified and insured by the Equine Associated Growth and Learning Association, our program has helped hundreds of mentally or physically challenged children. Our students suffer from autism, cerebral palsy, muscle weakness, sight and hearing impairment, learning disabilities, or social disorders. Each student participates in a specially designed program that is individually suited to his or her needs. Children learn anatomy, grooming, and riding and begin to develop friendships with the horses and other riders. We use specially trained therapy horses at weekly lessons in Bercut Field Golden Gate Park San Francisco. The Brady Program We are in immediate need for monetary donations to cover the cost of winter board for Olaf and Daisy, our therapy ponies. Photo: courtesy Polo in the Park has received a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature Assembly and Award of Honor from the City and County of San Francisco. Please consider showing your support by sending a check (to Horses in California, Inc.) or go to -->donate. Save October 8th, 2011 for our Polo in the Park event and gala. There will be a Polo Match, Luncheon, Auctions, Live Music, a Fashion Show, Wine Tasting and much more. The Pacific Coast Vaulters of Woodside, California will be presenting a demonstration of vaulting. This is our primary fundraiser throughout the year to raise money for the Brady Program. The pre-event gala will be Friday, October 7th. We have formed a partnership with the Churchill Centre and Museum of London to present Polo in the Park s Winston S. Churcill and James S. Brady Courage Cup. Adding to the international excitement, the Great Wall Polo Team from China will be competing in this year s polo match. Sarah Meakin Executive Director, James S. 11 Mt. Eden Benefit a Huge Success Marianne Rose With the extreme efforts of the entire Mt. Eden Vaulting Club (Parents, grand parents, siblings, vaulters, coaches, and friends of Mt. Eden), another successful Benefit Event was held on May 1 at Garrod Farms in Saratoga, California. Thanks to the generosity of the Garrod Family, the members of Mt. Eden and all our guests and friends, the club will be able to continue to offer some scholarships, maintain and improve our horses and equipent and pay for horse and coach expenses at competitions. Our guests enjoyed a delicious ranch barbeque. There was a special vegetarian meal station. A wide variety of items were auctioned off - from evenings on the town to pet gifts, vaulting lessons to jewelry, plane rides to pony rides and much, much more. A kids raffle was a big hit with the youngsters. Plenty of great Cooper-Garrod wine was poured. Photos: Brian Wong June PAGE 11

12 Mt. Eden Benefit Of course the highlight of the day was the vaulting show. Our horses, coaches, longeurs and six teams featuring over 50 vaulters WOW d the crowd. Photos: Eric Jewett June PAGE 12
