4 PAGE 4 MAY 2015 N EW S LETTER Sterling Silver Studio s Spring Recital Handbook 2015 Home study Undergarments Pre-Planning To ensure that the students feel confident about their performance, we ask parents and guardians to encourage them to rehearse their recital choreography on a regular basis. If you don t know the name of your performer s recital song, make sure you talk to his/her instructor. Tights, nude clear back/strap bras, nude thongs and nude leotards are available for purchase in the Studio Boutique. Please purchase new tights for the recital, and do not wear before the dress rehearsal or performance. (Note: Having a second pair of tights on hand offers students and parents a great sense of security.) If you need to order tights from the studio, please do so as soon as possible. Please try on your costumes before the show to determine which type of undergarments will work best underneath costumes & uniforms. Please be sure to wear skin colored underwear and/or bras under your costumes to avoid see through embarrassing situations. Also, please be cautious of the cut of your undergarments, as many leotard cut costumes will expose panty lines. One of the things that you can do is not wear brief style underwear, only wear tights under your costume. This avoids panty lines all together. Older girls, please wear bras with clear straps. You can also purchase nude colored leotards in the Studio Boutique to wear under costumes which serve multiple purposes and also help with quick costume changes. The recital isn t a one or two day activity. Gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance so you ll know if something is missing or isn t right. Make a checklist of your child s routines, costumes, tights, shoes, and any accessories. Refer to it to make sure you have all your supplies before going to the auditorium. Bring at least one extra pair of tights of each color you need. Also bring extra hair gel, hair nets, bobby pins, and hairspray. Costume alterations Alterations are occasionally needed on recital costumes. Alterations are the sole responsibility of the student's parent or guardian. If you need help with alterations, you can contact our seamstresses Judy for assistance. Price will vary depending on the size of the job. You should contact her as soon as possible to ensure that your costume will be done before recital. Judy: Costume Care We recommend that each student s name be placed in his or her costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights. Place the costumes in a garment bag with your child s name on the outside. Pack accessories in a clear plastic bag with your child s name on the bag and on each item. Hats should be stored in a hatbox or similar container to prevent damage. Press or steam all costumes prior to the dress rehearsal and the performance. Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine; dry clean them only (after the recital). A garment steamer works great on tutus. Costume Racks Costume racks are a good idea if you have a child in multiple numbers (5 or more), however, multiple costume racks can and will crowd dressing rooms. We suggest that you connect with a couple of friends who are in the same dressing room as you, and share 1 rack for the day. If you don't already own a costume rack they can be purchased at most stores. Shoes & Tights All classes have a required color for shoes & tights, please refer to your picture schedule or your class instructor for shoe style & color. If you need to order shoes from the studio, please do so as soon as possible. This time of year is very busy for dance shoe companies and some shoes may become back ordered. Hair & Makeup PAC & Sr. Parade Corps students should wear the required hair, makeup, jewelry, etc. All other performers: please wear your hair pulled back out of your face so that the audience can see your beautiful faces and for safety reasons! Ponytails, buns or very secure up-dos work well! When a performer is on stage, bright lights will washout faces. Smiles and happy faces get lost in the lights and will not be seen as well from the audience or on the video. Even though makeup is not required for recreational teams, we do suggest that all female performers wear natural shades of makeup to enhance their facial features on stage. (Please try to avoid blue, purple or bright pink colors...reds, browns and neutral shades look best.) Boys, a little blush & mascara works well! Glitter is also a great addition to stage makeup & is available in the studio retail store. Video & Photography Please note: Parents, guardians and family members may not videotape or shoot photographs of their children at the dress rehearsal or at the recital. This is for safety reasons. When a performer is on stage, they are looking out into darkness. When an audience member uses a flash, this can blind the performers and create an unsafe environment on stage. Security guards will ask you to bring any cameras back to your car. Professional recital videos are available for purchase. Video order forms will be available at the studio. Video orders are payable to Swanson Digital. You may turn in your order form & payment before the show or give your order directly to the videographer the day of the show. TIPS: OTHER HANDY EXTRAS Baby wipes/shout wipes (to fix makeup mistakes or wash hands) Baby powder (for itchy costumes) Safety pins (for emergency costume repairs) Clear nail polish (to repair minor holes or runs in tights when there isn t time to change them) Band-Aids (the invisible kind) Your pain reliever of choice Handicap Seating If you need handicap seating accommodations please Carolyn at: Carolyn@SterlingSilverStudio.com and we will make arrangements for you.

5 P A GE 5 Recital Handbook 2015 Dress Rehearsal ~ Friday, June 12, 2015 Dress rehearsal for our spring recital will be held on Friday, June 12 at the DECC Auditorium. Jr/Sr Show Rehearsal: 1:00-4:30 pm Mini Show Rehearsal: 5:00 pm Supermodel, Bellhop, Come Sail Away, Toy Soldier, Sr. Corps & Hard Days Night will all practice at the 1:00 rehearsal. Dance with my Guy will be performing in both shows, but you will rehearse with the Mini show at 5:00. Participation in the dress rehearsal is mandatory. The dress rehearsal allows the students to become familiar with the auditorium surroundings and to become comfortable with their performance, costumes and being onstage. Lighting, music cues, set changes, and all other logistics for an organized and professional performance are rehearsed so the students can make the best impression possible. We run an organized and timely dress rehearsal; your help with the process will guarantee a professional production. Everyone will meet in the auditorium. Students should arrive in their first performance costume. Students 10 years of age and older can be dropped of at Loading Dock #2 on Harbor Drive. Each student under 10 years of age needs to have a parent or responsible adult present with them at dress rehearsal. At this time, we will show everyone (students and parents) where the performers need to be dropped off on the day of the show. It is important that everyone is clear on this drop off location for students for the performance. We will also be showing parents and performers how to get to their dressing room once they are dropped off, and introducing children and parents to the recital dressing room volunteers that will be in charge of their room. The grand finale will be rehearsed FIRST at each rehearsal. Next, we will make necessary announcements and then run through routines on stage. As soon as YOUR final number is done performing, you can leave after you have checked out with your dressing room attendant. Students, we ask that you bring all of your costumes and accessories to dress rehearsal, and bring all props, shoes and other necessary items with you such as batons, ribbons, flags, etc. The lighting technician will be setting the lights according to your costumes, so it is important that you all come in costume. You do not have to have your hair or makeup done for rehearsal. Out of fairness to everyone, and according to DECC rules, you may not leave personal items in the auditorium to reserve your seats in advance, and taping off seats is not allowed. Any personal items that are left in the theatre will be collected between rehearsal and recital (and between the two shows), and there will be a lost and found available at the front doors for you to pick up personal items. All seats for both shows are general admission and available on a first come basis. Mini Show performers, you may leave your costumes and performance accessories in the dressing rooms on Friday evening if you wish. Sterling Silver Studio or the DECC is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Jr/Sr Show performers you must take your items with you between rehearsal and your show. Everyone who ordered a shirt can pick up their shirts at rehearsal on June 12. You can use your DECC parking ticket multiple times in one day if you leave the rehearsal and plan on coming back later to pick your child up. You can not use your parking ticket for the DECC on two separate days. A separate parking ticket will have to be purchased for Friday and Saturday. If you are ONLY dropping your child off, and providing a signature for recital sign-out, you do not need to purchase a parking ticket. You may use the backstage entrance by loading dock on Harbor Drive. DECC parking tips on page 6. Smile, Enjoy, and Have a GREAT Time! Recitals are a time to have FUN! If you need help or have questions, do not hesitate to ask! Backstage Your child s safety is our #1 concern. There are many children for us to keep track of, therefore, we do not allow adults backstage who are not in the show or who did not attend the volunteer meeting. We follow these strict procedures to keep your child safe. Security at the stage doors will be instructed to not let children leave with people throughout the show, and will not let adults backstage who s names do not appear on the volunteer list. If you want to be backstage with your child, please volunteer for the show & attend one of the volunteer meetings at the studio. Wednesday, May 6:15 pm Friday, May 5:00 pm Parents of preschool students are especially encouraged to volunteer backstage with their child. Family members and friends don t belong backstage or in the dressing rooms during rehearsals or the recital. The same applies during intermission. There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space, and dressing rooms are a private area. Please remind your family and guests to be respectful of these areas. Those who wish to greet a performer after the show or present flowers should do so in the lobby areas. Dressing Room Etiquette Students must respect other students space and property in the dressing rooms. The students will spend more time in the dressing rooms than onstage or in the auditorium, so please do your best to keep them organized and clean. Only water & dry snacks are allowed in the dressing rooms to avoid messes and sticky spills. For safety reasons, do not bring anything that includes or is made with nuts. When they are not onstage, all performers must remain in the dressing rooms with their dressing room attendants during the dress rehearsal and recital.

6 Recital Handbook 2015 Recital Arrival & Dismissal June 13, 2015 Students should be dropped off at loading dock #2 on Harbor Drive one hour before their show begins. Traffic will be heavy, please be patient, and realize that our efforts are focused on trying to keep your children together and safe! If you are a parent of a small child, and would like to be with your child throughout the show, we understand your concerns! You will be allowed to stay backstage with your child. But you must get a wristband at one of the volunteer meetings. Parents, please decide before the show if you will be backstage or if you wish to watch the show from the audience. (If you are going to stay backstage you will need to attend the volunteer meeting on Wednesday, May 28 or Wednesday, June 4 at Sterling Silver Studio, to receive important information in case your assistance is needed backstage and to get your wristband.) Parents who are not on the volunteer list are not allowed in the dressing rooms after the children have been checked in for the recital. Only volunteers with wristbands will be allowed backstage. This is to ensure the safety of your children. All students are required backstage until after the grand finale. We will be having an award ceremony onstage following the grand finale for those students receiving year awards, attendance awards and parade awards. All children who are performing in the grand finale or those who would like to participate in the award ceremony must stay backstage until the show is complete. If your child is not performing in the grand finale or does not wish to receive an award, the person who signed the child in, may sign the child out immediately following their performance. Please go to the loading dock area backstage and our security staff will assist you. Security staff have been hired to manage the entrances and exits of the backstage doors, and have been instructed not to allow anyone backstage during the show who is not on the volunteer list. This is a safety measure to protect your child. If you have special concerns for your child, you are welcome to attend a volunteer meeting to stay backstage with them for the entire show. The dressing rooms will be stocked with various activities. Following the Grand Finale, all students will be directed back to their assigned dressing rooms. Students under the age of 13 will not be released until a parent has come to claim them. A parent or assigned adult must be present at dress rehearsal and provide valid ID or signature to release their child/children that they are responsible for after the recital performance. This enforces the rule of attending rehearsal with your child. It is our desire to make sure that each and every child is SAFE during this large production. As parents, we trust that you will understand and comply with this rule. DECC Parking: Parking is $5.00 per day. Reminder: Performers enter the auditorium on the back side of the building on Harbor Drive at loading dock #2. DECC ticketing staff will not allow people, including performers, to enter through the main auditorium doors before the show starts. This is a DECC rule and one that must be followed. We advise that you drop your performers off at the loading dock and then go to park your car. Dress Rehearsal Guests One parent or guardian may accompany each student to the dress rehearsal. Additional attendees at the dress rehearsal will be subject to the full cost of a recital ticket. Dressing Room Assignments Dressing room assignments will be available soon and will be posted on the Studio Boutique door. Please check the list once it is posted to make sure that your performer is in a dressing room for each show they are performing in. We will do our best to make sure that a performer stays in a dressing room for both shows; however, they may need to move according to their class or number of performers in a dressing room. Each performer is assigned to a dressing room for the entire show. This is where you will bring your child to for dress rehearsal. These are also the dressing rooms where you will pick-up your performer after the show. Please remember to provide your signature to the dressing room volunteer. Recital Routine Order We wanted to provide the tentative recital lineup for you. Each class is listed under one of the shows. Some teams will be performing in both shows.
