1 Friendship Village School Newsletter PO Box 100/23 School Street Friendship, Me Tel: Fax: Ann Kirkpatrick, Principal Christina Wotton, Assistant Principal Cleo Carter, HeadTeacher Beth Simmons, Administrative Assistant Visit our website at March 1, 2013 Friendship Village School Random Acts of Kindness! This weeks Honorees are Elizabeth Y. and Mrs. Hynd! Their kindness helped make our school a friendlier more caring community. Why Fluoride? From The Health Office "In the 1930s, dental scientists documented that the occurrence and severity of tooth decay was lower among people whose water supplies contained higher levels of natural fluoride. Extensive studies followed and discovered that fluoride, when present in the mouth, can become concentrated in plaque and saliva, helping to prevent the breakdown of enamel minerals." -the CDC. "Every day, minerals are added to and lost from a tooth's enamel layer through two processes, demineralization and remineralization. Minerals are lost (demineralization) from a tooth's enamel layer when acids--formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth--attack the enamel. Minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited (remineralization) to the enamel layer from the foods and water consumed. Too much demineralization without enough remineralization to repair the enamel layer leads to tooth decay. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. Fluoride also helps remineralization as well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and adults."-from WebMD. "Fluoride is safe and effective when used as directed but can be hazardous at high doses (the "toxic" dosage level varies based on an individual's weight)."-webmd. Parents should supervise young children when using fluoridecontaining products and remember to only use a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste on a child's toothbrush. "Keep in mind, that it's very difficult to reach hazardous levels of fluoride in home-based fluoride containing products. Nonetheless, if you do have concerns or questions about the amount of fluoride you or your child may be receiving, talk to your child's dentist, pediatrician, or family doctor."-webmd. WALDOBORO LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL/T-BALL REGISTRATION & TRYOUTS Registration forms for the 2013 Waldoboro Little League season are being accepted at the Waldoboro Recreation Department Mon-Fri from 8:30am-5:00pm until March 30th for all players. Players may also register at the Waldoboro VFW on Mill Street or Friendship Village School on Thursday, March 14th from 5:30-7:00pm. Little League Baseball/Softball requires at least one parent or legal guardian present a state certified copy of the child s birth certificate three proofs of residence(except returning players). Registration is required even if the child played previously. Registration fee is $25. Additional family members receive $5 discount. Scholarships are available upon request for those in need. Players must live within the league boundaries of Waldoboro and Friendship (there are some exceptions) and fall between the designated eligibility birth dates in order to enroll: T-Ball(coed) and Baseball - between 5/1/00 & 4/30/08, Softball - between 1/1/00 & 12/31/06. Divisions of play include: T-Ball (5&6 coed), Minor League (Coach & Player Pitch) Softball & Baseball (7-11), Major League Softball & Baseball (9-12). To be selected to a Major League Team, first year players (ages 9-12) MUST attend the tryout/evaluation session. Players that played on the WILDCATS, PANTHERS, TIGERS, FILLIES, or DIAMONDBACKS in 2012 need to register, but not tryout. Players league age 11 who played for BEARS must attend tryout. This year s evaluations will be held on Saturday, March 30th in the Medomak Valley High School Gym as follows: Boys Baseball(3-5pm), Girls Softball(5-7pm) League Changes - During the off-season, Little League volunteers in Waldoboro, Friendship, Warren, Union and Washington have been meeting to develop plans for the establishment of Medomak Valley Little League in This year, these towns will operate as if in one league and will play a similar schedule. This includes both the major and minor league divisions. This change will allow towns to keep their current teams while playing in a schedule with other children within the RSU/MSAD 40 school district. The change will also affect how all-star (tournament) teams are selected. For more information on Registration, Tryouts or upcoming league changes, please contact league president Bill Post at or waldoborolittleleague@gmail.com or logon on to Questions may also be directed to Kyle the Waldoboro Recreation Department at Winter Weather is Here! Now that winter has arrived, all students should be coming to school with a coat, hat and mittens. When there is snow on the ground, your child should be wearing his/her snowpants and boots. All students go out to recess each day unless the wind chill is 10 degrees or below. Itʼs a good idea to send in an extra hat and pair of mittens for your child to keep in his/her backpack. This way he/she will always be prepared. When children wear boots to school, they should bring a pair of shoes to wear while they are at school especially on the days that they have PE or music as it is not safe for them to be running/dancing with boots on. From The Health Office Does "0" mean zero??? Yes, that's the recommendation!! It means "0" sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk. Where is all that sugar in "sugary" drinks? If your drinks contain added Corn Syrup, Sucrose, Fructose, Dextrose, Molasses, Glucose, Maltose, or Honey, you are adding extra calories in the form of sugar to your diet. High sugary drink intake leads to obesity, dental caries (cavities), and often, poor calcium intake if the drink takes the place of milk or milk products. Water is better for hydration than sugary drinks (and cheaper!), and milk is one of the most nutrient-dense beverages you can enjoy. Milk contains Calcium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Protein, Vitamins A, D, B-12, Riboflavin, and Niacin. Also, low-fat milk contains the same amount of Calcium and Protein as whole milk without the added fat and cholesterol. So...yes, "0" does mean zero, but it can be replaced with something that is so much better! RSU 40/MSAD 40 Adult Education New Classes Starting Soon!
