November 12th Veterans Day-No School November 13th Technology in the Home, 5:30 ATTENTION Parents and Guardians: In the event that we have a 2 hour delay, students should not be dropped off before 10:15. Thank you! Saltwater Tank Last week we welcomed quite a few salt water animals to our school! They are in a tank in the library. Elaine Jones from the Department of Marine Resources brought them to our school. The intermediate students will be observing them to learn about their habitat, adaptations, and life cycles. The students will also learn how to help take care of them. The male horseshoe crab and two lobsters are fun to watch. There is a scallop, a surf clam, an oyster, anemones, a hermit crab, a banded whelk, urchins, a seastar, and a sea cucumber. Eventually, we may be able to introduce some additional animals, too. Please visit the library and take a look! Mock Election On Tuesday, the students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades held a mock election. Before revealing the results, I'd like to recognize several students who put a lot of effort into the project. These students are good citizens! Gabriyah, Osage, and Emma were our ballot clerks, and they did a great job helping their fellow students go through the voting process. Nathan E., Maddy, Elizabeth, Lydia, Eric, Jonah, and Jordan all did a great job tallying the votes, double-checking the counts, and creating a final tally of the results. They worked hard and helped each other. Thank you all very much!! Now, for the results. Our students chose Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for president and vice president, Charlie Summers for United States senator, Jonathan Courtney for United States representative, Les Fossel for Maine state senator, and Jeffrey Evangelos for Maine state representative in Friendship and Ellen Winchenbach for representative in Waldoboro. " Mike was able to visit Friendship again! He is from San Antonio, Texas, and we learned that the word Texas means friendship in the Caddo Native American language. He is helping the intermediate students learn about the U.S.A. and they are helping him learn about Maine. He is an independent owner / operator affiliated with Mercer Transportation. He is our pen pal, and he has visited F.V.S. twice in On this visit, he gave the school two Louisville Slugger bats signed by his coworkers at Mercer. We nominated him for Trucker Buddy of the Month, and he won! Each child will get a bag of snack chips to celebrate, courtesy of the Trucker Buddy program! Mike brought volcanic rock samples from New Mexico and California to show the children. He also showed us photos from his travels. We saw the worldʼs largest McDonalds, which is in Oklahoma, the St. Louis Arch, and the St. Lawrence River. We also saw pictures of San Francisco. Mike picked up a load in Limestone Thursday morning, and he will deliver it in California before Halloween next week. We wish him safe traveling, and we look forward to exchanging more letters. Technology in the Home There will be a Technology in the Home informational meeting at the Friendship Village School for parents on November 13, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. Online educational programs such as Lexia, ixl and Word Voyage will be modeled and we will have some interactive games for parents to try. If you have access to a computer or an ipad at home and are looking for ways to help your child s reading and math skills, come check it out. Snacks will be provided by the Friendship Community Club. MEEP visits F.V.S... " The intermediate classes enjoyed hands-on science activities when guest teachers Stefany and Ryan visited us. Maine Energy Education Program classes help children learn about electricity and renewable resources. The fifth grade learned about climate change and how carbon dioxide in earthʼs atmosphere can trap heat. We found out that human breath has less carbon dioxide than car exhaust! Sixth grade found out how people learn about the climate by studying mud core samples from the bottom of lakes and ice core samples from glaciers. Fourth grade students made apple batteries and used solar panels to run a fan motor. All of the students discussed ways that people can use fewer nonrenewable resources like oil, coal, and gasoline. Turning off lights, using less water, hanging clothes out to dry, and recycling are all ways we can conserve our resources! 2 Friendship Recreation Dept. Supper & Cake Contest: Please join us at the Hahn Center, Friday November 16 th starting at 5:30pm for our ball field dugout Chili, Bean or Casserole fundraiser supper. Waldoboro Youth Cheerleading Coaches Needed The Waldoboro Recreation Department has begun accepting registrations for the 2012 Waldoboro Youth Cheering Program. The program will be divided into two divisions: Competition (4th-6th only) and Sideline (K-6th). Coaches are needed for the Competition Program Both Cheering programs are scheduled to begin around the 3rd week of November at Miller School. Sideline will continue through the end of January and Competition run until March. Participants in the Sideline program learn basic cheering fundamentals and perform at pee-wee basketball games. Participants in the Competition program learn choreographed dance routines, stunts, cheers and perform at Maine Youth Cheering events. Due to competition rules, the squad size will be limited. Travel and a strong commitment to practices is required. Base registration cost for both programs is $ An additional $10.00 for those selected to the competition squad is required in addition to the cost of any needed non-returnable uniform items. A $10.00 non-resident fee also applies. For safety, jewelry is prohibited at practices or events, this includes new piercings. Participants should register at the Waldoboro Recreation Department. For more information, or if interested in Coaching in the Sideline Program contact the Recreation Department at Medomak Valley Girls Youth Basketball Registration and Sign Up Clinics There will be two registration sign up clinics for all girls in grades 3-6 that are interested in playing basketball this winter. Parents may register their daughter at either clinic. Cost to register is $30. These clinics will be led by the MVHS girls varsity basketball coach Randy Hooper. Players should come prepared to participate in drills both days. Teams and coaches will be decided on Sat. Nov. 17 th. Practices will begin on Sat. Nov. 24. FMI call WALDOBORO RECREATION OFFERS CELTICS TRIP The Waldoboro Recreation Department is offering a bus trip to see the Boston Celtics take on the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday, March 16th, Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm. Cost is $90.00 per person and includes transportation to/from the Banknorth Garden via motorcoach and admission to the game. The bus will depart the Waldoboro VFW parking lot at 12:00pm and stop at Fanuiel Hall Marketplace prior to the game. Seats have been reserved in section 312 & 322 (rows 3-5). Tickets will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. A $50 per person deposit is required at time of registration. Balance of payment is due no later than January 10th to hold seat. Cancellations after that date are subject to a $5 per person processing fee. Spanish Beginner with Paul Garcia Beginner Spanish focuses on basic elements, giving emphasis to development of spoken language skills. One goal will be thinking on one s feet viable self expression. Classroom practice spans the gamut from the traditional through situational exercises and total physical response techniques. Textbook fee of $15 is payable to the instructor the First night of class. Class begins Wednesday, 11/14 and meets both Wednesday & Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. through 12/12. Fee: $55/$60 non- resident. Room 28 at MVHS. De-Mystifying Wine with Keith Bodine A seriously fun approach to wine is presented by the owner of Sweetgrass Farm Winery & Distillery. You will have an overview of how wines are made, how to better appreciate them, and how to taste wines, both in progress and Finished. Enjoy a tour of a working winery and distillery. Class meets Thursday, 11/15 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Fee: $15/$20 non- resident. This class is held at Sweetgrass Farm Winery, 347 Carroll Road, Union. Learning to Knit Socks with Mary Lou D Aquila Learn the basic components for making a traditional sock from the top down on 4 or 5 double pointed needles including: knitting in the round on double pointed needles, making the heel Flap, turning the heel, creating the gussets, Finishing off with paired decreases and weaving the toe. Students must be comfortable with casting on, knitting and purling. Call the adult education office for supplies required. Class meets Saturday, 11/17 from 10:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Fee: $25/$30 non- resident. This class is held at Eagle s Nest Yarns, 14 Old Route One, Waldoboro. Homeowner Energy Clinic with Paul Kando How can we cut our home s energy consumption for the least investment and what should we do First? How can we be sure that tightening a leaky house does not lead to unsafe or unhealthy conditions for house and occupants alike? This workshop walks us through a home energy audit, and reviews successful techniques of home energy efficiency. Your questions are encouraged throughout and following the workshop.
